- slicecom, on 03/03/2009, -6/+69This was a refresh, no new products were released (except for the numberpad-less wired keyboard). I don't recall Apple ever calling events for speed bumps and processor upgrades.
- legioss, on 03/04/2009, -2/+43"For you laptop users, a new Mac Pro has been unleashed, for $300 less than the previous model." WTF?
- seinman, on 03/04/2009, -5/+34Attention idiots: Apple NEVER holds "events" for spec bumps. They only pull those out for new product lines and product re-designs. Get with the ***** program, this is how it has been for the last decade.
- Gbomber, on 03/04/2009, -3/+20I suppose they could have gotten a Wall-E robot dressed in a black turtleneck to announce these, but seriously this was more of an update than a rollout. On the other hand, I want the Mac mini to replace my old one..
- lazyslacker, on 03/04/2009, -15/+27FTA:
"We've come to expect, even rely upon, the black turtleneck and blue jeans in the same way as we used to rely on hot chocolate after a touch day at school, or pizza in the dorms after struggling on a test. You see Jobs prowl the stage with the prayer-like hand gesture, and you know things are OK in the tech world. "
What the hell is this drivel? Buried. - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -1/+12It's $49 for each of the wired keyboards, if you purchase a machine that comes with a keyboard (Mac Pro, iMac) then you can easily choose between the various keyboard options at no additional cost.
- qwerter, on 03/04/2009, -0/+11Really, it made about as much sense as the concept behind the rest of the article.
- Gee1004, on 03/04/2009, -2/+12Job-less, lol. More spam. Do people have a clue that even Steve Jobs is on a 6 month leave, he still knows what's going on and probably makes decisions from his living room. He is a CEO, not a bookkeeper. No, he is not dead yet.
- dechah, on 03/04/2009, -4/+12At the pricepoint of the new iMacs, especially in countries outside of the USA, they should at the very least feature a decent quad core processor, but it is not even an option. A very disappointing update in my opinion.
- AquaOSX, on 03/04/2009, -1/+8Word. Apple does this very same thing, the exact same way, several times a year.
- Zippo, on 03/04/2009, -1/+8lol, the Dell's 16" monitor has a lower resolution than the 15" MacBook Pro.
Throw that in with OS X, iLife, the fact that the laptop is probably twice as thin and better designed, and AppleCare not being retarded like Dell's excuse for service... and you've narrowed the gap a little. Granted, not all the way.
Admittedly, you should never buy hard drives or RAM from Apple. - inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+7Whiners whined. Fanbois came their pants. People who placed an order a week ago tried frantically to cancel. Just like every other mac update.
- NathanCH, on 03/04/2009, -5/+11Apple already states they aren't going to do big press conferences when they update their products anymore. Why is this surprising?
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -3/+9Then the iMac is what you want.
- RadiantSilver, on 03/04/2009, -1/+7Wait - so the Mac Mini gets Firewire 800 but not the MacBook? Apple's hardware decisions seem very arbitrary lately.
Loving the new internal design of the Mac Pro - a major improvement - but hating the poor price/performance. - kefkaantakrist, on 03/04/2009, -1/+6Must be a progressive Catholic school. Now they have days when the priest is allowed to touch the boys, and days when he is not.
- CraigReed, on 03/04/2009, -1/+5This really is a stupid article. Apple has made updates like this in the past, no big event, no small even just update on a web page one morning. And the idea that this is Jobs-less? Steve had his hands on this thing at some stage even if he was just saying yes thats a good date on the phone one morning whilst eating his vegan breakfast and prank calling the local Starbucks.
- avatarpalin, on 03/04/2009, -0/+4exactly thank you!
- mlagana, on 03/04/2009, -2/+6this guy has to double check his articles... and possible just give up
a mac pro is a tower. and the earth KEPT rotating on its axis maybe?
and why would they have a conference to unleash that things have been... upgraded they wouldn't you jerk - Nosferotu, on 03/04/2009, -0/+3This dingleberry also refers to the Mac Pro as a 'laptop' halfway through the article. Clearly doesn't really understand what he's talking about.
- SmSpillaz, on 03/04/2009, -3/+6New maxed out Mac Pro is $22,336.90 in case anyone cares.
- pradaaddict, on 03/04/2009, -6/+9Good thing, my bank account can't handle a slew of new Apple swag right now.
- jwdav, on 03/04/2009, -1/+4Poor performance?? Apple released the first Nehalem-based Xeon computers available and your comment is poor performance??
- judicar, on 03/04/2009, -1/+4The only difference is that Apple usually spreads these releases out over a longer period of time. Most lines get an early, mid and/or late year speed bump/refresh but they are staggered across the year or released right after the Mac Expo/WWDC.
Though the changes to the iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro and Airport lines went well beyond the usual speed bump or refresh it wasn't as significant as the move to Intel procs or the introduction of the Aluminum Macs all of which had news conferences. - techmaster, on 03/04/2009, -0/+3Even worse, if you look up the Mac Pro on their web site, the 2.8ghz model has been dropped down to a 2.66ghz model, and the quad core has been upped to $2500, the 8 core has been upped to $3300. Hardly a $300 "price drop". You're getting less product for more money. The only improvement is more standard memory and hard drive, plus it now comes with a GeForce standard. Looks like I got my 8 core Mac Pro at the right time, when they were a steal.
- factsahoy, on 03/04/2009, -2/+5No, because a Mac Pro is far bigger and doesn't have an integrated monitor. If he wanted a Pro, he probably wouldn't be bitching about the iMac.
A-duh. - lazyslacker, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2heh +9/-9 diggs. I love the division.
- EmperorPsiblade, on 03/04/2009, -1/+3I love how you put "Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (3MB cache/2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB)" for the ***** Dell, but don't mention the 6MB L2 cache of the Macbook Pro.
Not biased at all.
Mind you, the build quality of the Dell will be, well, Dell quality. Enjoy. - Nosferotu, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2Glad someone else noticed this. This guy clearly did absolutely no research, just hammered out a BS article.
- Refrag, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2Agreed. Buried as inaccurate.
- zeth006, on 03/04/2009, -0/+2Shows that some people don't recognize humor when they see it.
His comment just cracked me up. - gargantuan, on 03/04/2009, -2/+4Despite the fact that the article was a heaping pile of *****, allow me to say something derogatory about Apple, it's user base, fire up an argument about price then call Steve Jobs a *****. If I may, because I'm a dick.
Do I need to point out the sarcasm? I'm not sure diggers are as smart as they used to be. - miakeru, on 03/04/2009, -1/+3I think it's great that Apple didn't make a huge deal about the updates. With an economy like this and 50 people from sales getting laid off, it would've been kind of a slap in the face to invest whatever ungodly sum they pay to hold a conference like this and sponsor some celebrity artist to wrap it up. Their keynotes, announcements, conferences, etc... are all really cool, but a little inappropriate at a time like this.
- drvelocity, on 03/04/2009, -2/+3Steve Jobs has never announced these little evolutionary updates to the product line, and if he were still well I'm sure he wouldn't have now either.
- cuervoman914, on 03/04/2009, -1/+2call it apple tax or OS X tax, its still the same *****. i bought a vaio, i paid a little more than usual, and guess what, it was still less than a macbook and looked just as good, so good design shouldnt be worth the price of another laptop.
- wafhacker, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1http://youryoure.com/ - Know what I mean?
... oh what's the use ... :-( - factsahoy, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1The average intelligence of the Digg user base has certainly plummeted since Digg's days as a useful site. But there are still a few people who know how to spell "its".
- woohoo, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1No thanks, I can run Linux very well, with everything I need, on a $55 Intel P4 2.0 GHz, offlease, IBM NetVista. Macs are way too expensive just to get a "cool" computer.
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -0/+1I got a Mac Mini yesterday for $800 and change CDN after shipping and taxes. A little pricey, but nothing rediculous.
- Jem7vwh, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1They are pricing themselves out of the School systems.
I know because I am an Admin an the budget will not support Apple prices when I can get 3 PC's for the same price. - rhuxley, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1don't forget XCode, Visual studio on windows will cost around $900
- SmSpillaz, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1They want you to buy the Mac Mini as well.
- scooby007, on 03/05/2009, -0/+1Looks to me like the biggest "feature" of this rollout is the display port update that allows control of HD content... :[ That's why I picked up an old (new) mini on clearance...
- zeth006, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1+23/-14 For lazyslacker's comment. WTF is with you Apple fanboys? Do you get all worked up every time someone bashes on your guys' cult leader?! Goodness gracious. It makes sense for Christians to get offended when you bash on Jesus...but Steve Jobs ain't a Jesus!! JESUS CHRIST!!!
- xaxxon, on 03/04/2009, -0/+1You understand that the nehalem is a far more powerful system than a corresponding core 2. Clock for clock it's faster, has MUCH faster memory, has hyperthreading (which is almost always good).. It's an amazing setup.
Plus, you have the option of adding another one. - wyrdness, on 03/04/2009, -1/+2"Hi, I'm Steve Jobs and I'd like to announce a huge price hike for most of the world, together with a minor upgrade of the specifications. Oh, and the new Mac Pro is actually slower for multithreaded applications than the old one"*
I'm in the UK and the price of the base iMac has gone up by almost £200. And it's still using an obsolete core 2 duo processor. The only quad core machine in the range is the 2.66Ghz Nehalem Mac Pro which starts at £1889 (again a price rise over the old 8 core).
In comparison, the 2.66Ghz Nehalem based Dell XPS starts at just £650.
I've been using computers since 1982, and OS X is by far the best desktop OS that I've ever used. I currently own three Macs and am desperate to upgrade my aging iMac. I'm well off and have the money in the bank for a new Mac. But I've looked at the new range and have decided that I'm not going to give Apple my money for one of them. Something is seriously wrong with Apple when loyal customers like myself are looking at their new machines and are saying no to them. As far as I'm concerned, Apple are no longer a viable choice for desktop computers in the UK. I'll probably buy something like the Dell XPS and either install Ubuntu or turn it into a hackintosh.
* Blender Render Benchmark - Apple 8-core 3.2Ghz Mac Pro - ~12 seconds, 2.66Ghz Core i7 Nehalem ~20 seconds. - AndrewWiggin, on 03/04/2009, -1/+1I know it's stretching it, but they introduced dual-band simultaneous wireless routers. At least it's something new that I could see him talking about. But you're right, overall it is just an update.
This could partly be why Jobs took a leave of absense - he knows that no new products are coming out until he's back this summer to show off the new iPhone (my guess, no facts). - Topher06, on 03/05/2009, -1/+1Apple is out of touch with reality, I heard about the current Mac rollouts on the radio saying that Apple was shipping new models with new prices to fit with the current recession, WTF!, Many of the products cost more then they did a month ago and you can still find better deals with equivalently spec'd models from Dell and HP and the rest.
Seriously, when are people going to wake up an realize the Apple tax you pay for a sleek case and OS X isn't worth it. I guess when their home is under foreclosure and they have their car repo'd they might realize buying that Mac Pro or Mac Air wasn't worth it.
But I guess Apple has it right, in any recession its the common person that suffers the most, and Apple doesn't appeal to the common person, Apple targets the executives and other shysters taking bonuses and bribes from the government while their companies go bankrupt, Apple is just capitalizing from that group of "people", good for them. - jwdav, on 03/05/2009, -1/+1Nehalem is an architecture not a processor - the Mac Pro and the Dell are not using the same processor.
The Dell uses the first Core i7 chip released; the Mac Pro is using the latest Xeon processor which has not been publicly released for sale yet. Pricing is available however - the Xeon used in the entry level Mac Pro is $1385 while the Core i7 used in the Dell sells for $288.
I wonder if this could affect pricing ... - Thud, on 03/04/2009, -0/+0I've seen the Dell in person as well, the viewing angle on the LCD is nowhere near the Macbook Pro's. It's more on par with the regular macbook (which also doesn't have a very good viewing angle).
Yes, it's true, if you use cheaper parts, you CAN build a cheaper notebook. A computer is more than just a combination of HD, memory, and processor.
Obviously there are people who think the macs cost too much.. so if price is the only consideration, then it's a good thing they have other options to choose from!
The good news about the "apple tax" is that it also applies when you resell your system later on. -
