- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -6/+68Have you ever noticed that the anti-Apple crowd is likewise predictable? Just about every Apple related story that does make it to the front page will inevitably have the "why does every Apple story make it to the front page" and "Apple is thuh suck" comments.
I haven't a clue what Al Gore Rhythms Digg uses to "front page" a story but I'll bet money that it considers the total number of system-wide Diggs that are taking place at the time. Such a mechanism would take into account that there is more or less "Digging" going on depending upon the time of the day and the day of the week. And this, I'm guessing, is why different numbers of Diggs can "front page" a story.
Two other comments if I may...
1) If you don't like Apple then fine and dandy! That is your right. But isn't the decision to NOT Digg an Apple related story the best way to demonstrate your point of view? Why do so many people feel the need to add negative and largely pointless comments to these submissions. And this goes on in many of the Microsoft submissions as well. Is it really necessary to add a "Get a Mac" comment to every story about Microsoft? I sure don't think so.
2) Some claim that Mac holds only 0.0000325% of the total PC market. How can such a small group of people "take control" of Digg as is often alleged? Is it possible that there is a larger part of the whole who are simply interested in the entire computer industry even if they themselves don't own a Macintosh? I don't own the Hubble Space Telescope and yet just recently I Dugg a submission on this subject.
Please forgive me for being so verbose. - blakesinclair, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29my buddy just ditched his whole DVD player, CD player, AV-Cables (for ipod, digicam, videocam), etc and put in a mac mini. who listens to straight CD's nowadays anyways? not only is it good for DVDs and mp3 stuff, but he also runs NES emulators on it as well. no more need for his old NES console either! kick ass idea.
- mjaleo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27I'm on a Duo mini right now. Really strong machine. Web developer using it as a dev machine. Dreamweaver + Photoshop + Illustrator + Flash all work great on it and it's faster than my 3.2ghz P4.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -6/+30Because people actually like Apple hence it gets diggs. It's really not very complicated.
- diggmeplease, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26I bought one for that purpose. I have to say, it is the best idea that I have come up with in a while! Its small, so no big grey box by my TV. Its just perfect. I used to have an iMac G5, but this is so much faster than that.
- synthfx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21ok let's get this over with:
how'd this get to the frontpage blah blah blah ...apple mac mini grumble grumble grumble...real os yadda yadda yadda. no digg. fanboy. exclamation point ! - artman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Face it. The trends are changing. Apple is becoming more and more popular because of its OS, installed software and now their intel/bootcamp hardware/features. The whole "elitist" moniker is going by the wayside. I am a Mac and Windows user and I have always thought that people (people=average) would sooner or later switch. I will probably never, ever buy a Windows PC again.
As for these hardcore/ignorant Windows users. You are becoming a vanishing breed. Your attitude is getting so old. Let it go and accept that Macs are becoming a prevalent choice for computing and entertainment. And this article on the Mac Mini is a good example of this. - cinder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14No reason to digg parent post down, he has posted a comment that not only supports the article being linked, but his comment provides ideas as well.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I'm really tempted to pick one up next year for my apartment here at school. Specifically I'm really interested in how Bonjour is tying everything together; it would be great to be able to stream my music, or browse my photos via iPhoto through FrontRow from my iMac in another room. It's even cooler that my roommates could also stream their music via iTunes on their PCs. Very tempting; I like where Apple is going with the Mini.
- tktk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Heh...I had the same problem with my iBook 500. I ended up using a 1" binder clip to clamp the case together.
I was tempted to buy a Duo Core mini except I bought a PPC mini from a friend this past Nov. He was heading to China for work and sold it to me for $350. Course, at this point, I'm going to wait to see what the summer Macworld has in store. - Ottergoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7FedEx just dropped off my refurb Core Solo today. Much faster than my iBook G4, and, it doesn't need a clamp squishing it to work :-)
- rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I wasn't too impressed with my Mini (early adopter, got it when it was released w/G4 last year). It's kind of a dog, so I picked up a Dell laptop last week. So yeah, I've been looking at websites deciding what to do with it. OS X is great for networking/security obviously, so I can already SSH and VNC into it via the internet, but now I'm looking at making it a media server (it's got 250GB drive attached). Anyone have any good ideas on how to control it though (no FrontRow on this one although I can hack it in there, but still no remote)? I can use my phone to control it via WAP (slow), and Bluetooth support isn't quite there for the Razr (close though).
Sorry, just ranting. Although it was a little slow (again, G4, not Solo/Duo), it's the perfect little computer for sticking on a shelf and having it serve up content all day - SoBayJake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The Apple store (online and retail) hasn't sold G4 minis for some time.
Costco was selling a bundle...1.42 GHz, AppleCare, Apple Bluetooth Keyboard, and Apple Bluetooth Mouse. For $700 I think. I was just there about 20 minutes ago, and they didn't seem to have any left.
eBay is your best bet now, I think. Pricegrabber had some listed at CDW with a 1-2 week ship time. You might still find one at a CompUSA or some local reseller, but not for much longer. - dejager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You'll need a DVI (or HDMI) cable and if audio is important to you an optical cable out to your receiver. It's all pretty simple - pressing the menu button on the Front Row remote will bring up the media interface - which includes photo slideshows, dvd controls, iTunes music, and video controls (for quicktime formats, eg.
I do have to warn you though, if you have an older style tube tv everything outside of Front Row will look pretty bad. If you have a newer flat screen everything should look close to perfect. Sometimes users notice that flat screen resolutions don't match so they need to purchase DisplayConfigX to tweak the resolution just right.
Get a wireless mouse and keyboard too if you want to surf from your couch. - Gonzoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I can now clearly see why people become "Mac Addicts". I just bought my first (20"iMac - Dual Core) and it's bad-ass. I have always been a PC Geek and I can see myself quickly becoming a Mac Geek as well. They both have their respectable places in their markets.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7> antoniojvr wrote: "I find it funny how people try to sound smart. Don't use large words when diminutive words suffice."
I'm guessing that this is aimed at me. But if not then never-mind.
The only words I used that I think can fairly be called "large" are 'Al Gore Rhythms' (which isn't really a word, and besides it was intended as a joke [in case you didn't catch it, it means "algorithms"]) and the other is 'verbose.' I guess I don't think of 'verbose' as a big word because it's something I see all the time (many IDEs use this word to ask a programmer how detailed of a debug report he or she wishes to see).
As for trying to "sound smart," I am smarter than some but a hell of a lot dumber than others. I'm not trying to impress anyone with my Big Brain because frankly, my brain is rather average. However, my writing style can sometimes be a bit formal and maybe that's what you're picking up on. Not much I can do about that: it's just part of the "dorky geek personality" I was born with. :) - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Just look at Apple's mini website, about half way down the page it lists all the accessories you would need to connect to an HDTV or regular TV.
http://www.apple.com/macmini/accessories.html - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8They stoped making them you can still get refrubished ones though but they won't have frontrow + remote which is kind of the main point.

Excellent post. I could never see the need to comment simply to be derogatory on ANYTHING. - cmiller1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I find it funny how people seem to interpret reasonable, well thought out, and intelligently written comments as a personal attack at their intelligence; then, being unable to form a coherent argument, they resort to meaningless personal attacks that only succeed in making themselves look stupid.
Oh, and antoniojvr, next time try smaller rather than diminutive, much smaller and easier for those that have trouble reading. Do you realize that although many words may technically have the same meaning every word has it's place in the language and can be used for more than just expressing their definition but also to make subtle implications, improve flow, and express various ideas such as formality and more! Think before you comment and you won't have people clicking the red button. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5a mac mini completely optimized to be an internet appliance / media center computer with powerful online content and services distribution could be the next ipod!
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Intel Mac minis are better suited to home theater use than the G4 minis, between the faster processor and the decent video card (not bad for integrated video) they can handle even HD video OK. And of course Front Row is useful if you want other people to be able to operate it.
Almost forgot - the Intel minis have optical audio out, no so for the G4 minis. - Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Seems a reasonable idea. Bootcamp is your friend.
- cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm using a G4 mini right now as a media center. Works very well for what I do. No Frontrow :-(
For control of it I use whatever notebook is around and VNC into it. No need to install VNC server, already part of OSX. I also bought a regular Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. Works well from my sofa, not so well from further away. So far I'm not really missing the frontrow interface, but that may change when I get my MBP later this week. The G4 mini is a fine media center for NON-HD content! Also using a EyeTV 250 (on iMac G5) to record TV. I export to the drive on the mini for serious movie/tv watching and use CyTV for viewing content directly from EyeTV on the iMac G5. Works OK. I may move the EyeTV from G5 to mini to avoid using CyTV. Not slamming CyTV, its a great piece of coding, just that the interface is a little hard to read on the TV. You need Apple's S-Video adapter for all this to work. (unless your TV has VGA or DVI inputs)
HTH
cypherz @ work - Deegz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think apples popularity has largely spread by word of mouth, whereas windows has been forced onto us for years. Windows numbers are so great because they were available in every major store in the country, and the majority of people didn't know a thing about them when they made there "first" purchase. Computers have not been around for that long. No-one in my family even knew that there were different OS available until I pointed it out.
From the second I realized I had a choice, and tried both, I was able to see which I liked better. I have not used Linux, and as far as it goes, it hasn't offered any draw card, aside from the odd little app to meet some strange requirement I had, which after searching, found both PC and Mac alternatives.
In Australia it was near impossible to get a mac unless you went to a specialized reseller. So the majority of "settlers" just bought what they were shown. People who work with computers or are "educated" are a small percentage of actual computer owners. And in my opinion, numbers alone do not make something better.
My first digg comment :) - Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3can someone point out how to do this? what cables, extras, or whatever do i need to get it to work? I want to i just want it explained to me rather than looking it up on my own.. anyone?
- EPeters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bought one for just that reason, and it comes Friday! Thanks for the reassurance. I currently have an upscaling dvd player that reads gif, divx, mp3, and jpeg, but it will be great to have a media center that can play ANYTHING (in HD too).
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I did the same thing - took out the DVD and old CD player and replaced them both with a Mac mini.
It does lack a few things like a front panel display for DVD/CD status, but on the other hand the DVD player has the ability to resume where you left off - so I can eject a DVD I'm in the middle of watching, and insert it later to play at the same spot it left off.
Front Row is pretty good though I do still find myself using a mouse from time to time, you can get away without a keyboard almost all the time though. - tktk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Anyone have any good ideas on how to control it though (no FrontRow on this one although I can hack it in there, but still no remote)?"
You could look into VLC and using their web controls. Course, depending on what you wan to do , it might useless or be a major pain. I've done it once or twice but now that I gotten a laptop, I just copy my videos instead of streaming it. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have used Windows for yesrs, last year my friend bought an Apple Mac computer and I liked the operating system so much I went ahead a bought a Mac. In my opinion Apple's operating system is much better, for lots of reasons. And if for some reason I need a program that I cannot get for my Mac, I can always install Boot Camp, but that point hasn't come yet.
- Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ifconfig has different options than the Windows ipconfig but you can use the systems preferences gui in the applications directory. Select Network, Connections, and then Renew DHCP Lease.
Although I don't use windows not wanting to install Bonjour on your windows box does not seem reasonable... in fact it sounds pretty self defeating. - smokeyghetto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I guess we become crazy about letting people know that Apple is a great computer/OS as we have dealt with the stigma of being different for using mac.
All my friends that use windows have always asked why - "It cant do what Windows can do!"
Well, I guess millions of people that have recently purchased Apple computers because of their Ipod are now getting on the bus.
Big business hasn't had a choice as to what they their employees use in the office.
Now computers are affordable for the masses and We are making choices with are wallet. It will slowly build and catch by the those who can make a choice and have been burned by bad computer experiences with windows.
Just watch. Stop the hating.
Make love with apple and not worry about the viruses.
- chigaze, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use Apple Remote Desktop to control mine but then I have ARD Admin supplied by my employer. You can use VNC (as that's what ARD uses) but I'm not up on my VNC tools for Mac.
For remote control I just use I wireless keyboard and mouse but both ATI and Keyspan have remotes that will work with the mini but you have put an infrared receiver in a USB port.
For the record I use my G4 mini has a limited media centre and server box. It's connected to the stereo and TV, and runs iTunes, VLC, and backsup my laptops. If you hunt around I believe it's also possible to download and enable Front Row but you won't have the remote. - elliotanderson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6PPC kicked x86 ass up until a few years ago.
Just because it isn't true now doesn't mean it never was - cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2See my post above.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Besides all that you get the famous Apple support when you buy their hardware. I kinda don't see why you would "need" Windows for it to be a home theater pc but regardless of you choosing a terrible OS at lesat you can always turn to the kind folks at an Apple store to wipe the spyware infested copy of XP off and throw OS X back on.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My Revision A Mac Mini 1.42ghz is sitting on top of my tv doubling as a test apache box and a great little Media Center.
Granted I have upgraded the Ram to 1gb and thrown a 7200rpm hard drive in it, but with those upgrades its a damn decent machine limited to only 420p playback (which is still better than my TV can display anyway). - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ user98887
"That's hilarious, with 98% of desktops being windows. I think people know what the better OS is."
Hmmmm, are these the same 98% who chose VHS over Beta?
@ axemachine
"Because these fanatic/smug Apple users...."
Read user98887's above comments and explain to me again how smugness is exclusive to Apple users. - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I didn't want to install Bonjour on my windows machine. What I wound up doing is putting an alias to the network file in the 'Video' folder and Front Row will be able to see everything in the network share. You do have to open a connection to the share before this will work. I have a copy of the alias on my desktop to do that.
Performance is sometimes spotty over wireless. If you don't have a good connection it's ridiculously slow and unresponsive. Rebooting tends to fix it. I'm a mac newbie so I don't know how to ipconfig /renew on a mac. Is it like ifconfig in Linux? - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good find lad ;)
(that's 'danielwsmithee' I was talking to) - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Still in need of a solution for DVI to Component to make the mini work with my HDTV. I'm not talking simply cables, but a converter that will allow it to send the proper signal. Please pot a link if you know of something that will do the job.
- ilitirit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I want the Mac Mini not because of the OS, but because of it's size. I want Media Center 2005 because it's a good product. (Google it)
What's so hard to understand about that? Or is it safe to ignore you because you're just another Apple fanboy? - ingoldsby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Personally I would sell it on Ebay for a few hundred bucks, and pick up a core duo mini. They are very fast, the biggest bottleneck in the old G4 mini's was the hard drive, and even with a seperate firewire drive attached it's still a bottleneck, plus running a slow processor.
The new ones have fast SATA drives, and the processors run circles around the old G4. Just as an example, with Handbrake the G4 mini will rip/encode a DVD in h.264 at around 5fps. The Core duo mini will rip the exact same movie with the same settings at around 25-30fps. Encoding them in divx is even more impressive with the new core duo hovering at around 70-75fps. - schapman43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm ashamed to say that this is the first time I have seen or heard of the Mac Mini. I think I may order one to play with.
- dobesov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Heck, I even own apple stock now that they make PCs! i cant wat to have enough expendable money to buy one and run my DOS games!
- jsp317, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ive been a windows user for years. my first machine was a windows 98 now i use xp. i love xp. its better than any os Microsoft has ever made. now vista is on it's way. I'm not gonna jump on it first but I'm looking at it hard. macs have all ways been pricey. I'm looking a mack mini now. i want one but i never had the resources to get one. well long story short Ive paid off the house plus truck. I'm gonna buy a mac now. i want the best of both worlds. i want give up my PC for reasons we all know . I'm sure when i get my mac i want give it up either. i love computers period. people need to stop bashing it's a matter of choice. none are truly safe as far as viruses goes (smokeyghetto) get your facts right. there are some new ones for macs. the only computer that is safe is turned off locked up in a safe. well i wonder if the safe is safe it might be hacked too. well ***** none are truly safe. looking forward to my mac
- Fanon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm no Mac fan, but I'm getting a MacBook later this summer for testing purposes.
I'd love to get a Mac Mini, double the RAM, and put server 2003 on it. Imagine a tiny server to serve whatever you need. It'd be frickin' sweet. - dobesov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think that you have missed the entire point of what a PC user is... Please remember that through the years PCs have had multiple Operating systems and interfaces. Being a PC user is about a standard hardware set, and freedom of choice. A PC user could use linux, windows, OS/2, DOS, BSD or even some little homebrew OS... and now... OSX has come into the fold as one of the many choices and freedoms PC users have. The PC that became a revolution was about choice, choice of software and manufacturer. And people chose windows as the predominant OS. Many people forget why becasue they forgot what times were like back in the day or they are to young to remember, but everything else sucked even harder.
I think my point is (after many tangents)... silly elitist guy, welcome to being a PC user! - artman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5goat4
What is all this? Ok. I gotta rant...
Was your mother run over by a truckload of Macs? Did you get your penis caught in a Mac Powerbook? This is just a computer, a blog and a bunch of people expressing their views on it. I have no clue why this would make you feel angry, ignorant, paranoid or stupid. I as a Mac user don't try to act this way when there is an article on Windows anymore because I don't feel the need to pretend that I am The Windows Overlord. I think I've grown up to know that all this Mac vs Windows is childish.
Let. it. go.
Email me when Apple goes belly up, ok? - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1If you don't own a MacMini call apple and they will answer that question straight away.
If you do own a Mini, call apple, and what you asking me for? ;-) -
