- topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I believe a copy of OSX is $79 w/ student discount. I have NO problems paying to put mine on a PC legally. Why not? I mean XP pro was $200+ when it came out. Also I think a family pack (5 copies) only adds like $30 to the price. I don't mind rewarding a company for fair pricing.
- LeonThePro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a 22 year old joke. They had this in the very first Mac OS. If you stole it it would display a stolen from Appel icon.

- adam.lindsay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple has a win-win situation here. Supporting all the beige boxes and potential hardware devices would be a huge undertaking. Apple needs more developers and hacker types. So let them run it without support. My guess would be Apple will not blink an eyelash about this unless it becomes a serious problem. For it to be a serious problem, then it would have had to gone mainstream, in which case an enourmous amount of drivers would exist and Apple could better open and support it themselves.
- SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I won't mind buying a license for it but I won't rest untill I have OSX on my AMD X2. Screw Intel and their hardware DRM. OSX will rock on a decent CPU
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If you own a mac you are rich enough that you don't need to steal
- andreworg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
/System/Library/Extensions/Release Mac OS X for Intel.kext - skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess as long as you buy a copy of the OS, you can hack away and get it running on your own PC. That's only fair in my book.

"Apple's license agreement clearly states that you're only allowed to use the software on their Apple-made, Apple-branded machines, so you're already breaking the rules by hacking it. Two strikes against hacking... if you want to stay legal, anyway."
I don't know; who says that Apple's EULA's are enforceable? I sure didn't sign a contract with anyone specifying how I would or would not use the software when I purchased OS X 10.4... - nathos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I believe a copy of OSX is $79 w/ student discount. Of course you realize that that fair/low price of Mac OS X is subsidized by Apple's hardware sales. According to the license agreement (reading is good!), the only legal purpose a purchased version of Mac OS X is to be installed on Apple-branded hardware. - 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> lukas88 wrote: "If you own a mac you are rich enough that you don't need to steal"
Wealth is no barrier to stealing. Ever hear of ENRON? - Nerys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Apple's license agreement clearly states that you're only allowed to use the software on their Apple-made, Apple-branded machines, so you're already breaking the rules by hacking it

That violates Fair Use and is therfore in my book invalid null and void
When I buy something I consider it my property regardless of any terms. and I will do anything I want with my PROPERTY (for personal use only since I dont own the IP) if they dont like it tough.

http://www.nerys.com/ - Dan_2gngCrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They already have hacked versions that run on CPU's that were never intended and that was only the developers edition. I am sure that it will run on cpu's that aren't the core duo. As for the EFI I am not sure , however, it was running before.......again, the developer version, with a regular BIOS chip. The TPM so far hasn't been a problem.
P.S. I have a versionof OSx86 10.4.3 running on a machine that almost duplicates the developer box specs. - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ohh, a message. That'll stop them hackers dead in their tracks.
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> JackCampbell wrote: "Maybe, jobs should just open his OS already, call their bluff"
Forgive me if you were being somewhat tongue-in-cheek but just in case you weren't: it will never happen. I'm not saying that your idea is either good or bad, Jack; I'm only saying that Apple will never release a version of their operating system that will run on anything but a genuine Macintosh computer. - kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0please, when you buy a new ipod, they say "don't steal music". how the hell is any of this 'news'. jobs has voiced his hatred towards pirating and theft many times. this truly shows that any article with apple in the title makes front page.
before any of you 'fanboiz' bash me, i'm a mac owner, so STFU. - FSFunky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, real good idea there Ratteler. If they open up the OS, no one will buy the hardware because they will just install it on their beige boxes. JUST LIKE YOU SAY IN YOUR SECOND SENTENCE. No one will buy their hardware anymore, not to say that their hardware isn't good, it's just that (at least for me, and I think most people) the biggest draw is OS X.
And if they are indeed a hardware company, they need to keep it locked down otherwise they won't make any money. - Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe, but I have the feeling that those who would hack it would already have enough enticements, like running it on a regular PC.
- treed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love that they posted part of the file that says you may not post it whole or in part. Good job!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ill have it running on my fx 60 before the nights over!
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could buy three Dells for the price of an Imac, Apple's pricing policy is plain stupid. ooo.. look... a nice case blah blah.... big deal. When Apple's partership with Intel was announced, all the talk was of "cheaper macs" etc... what happened to that? People like OSX, but who can afford £1300 for a computer? not 90% of the under 20s. I'd say, give it a month and iOSX will be everywhere. The economics of not having any cash will see to that. (I'm a happy Windows user, but if I could buy OSX for my PC I probably would too, I think)
- aussiehuw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is pretty funny
- Dan_2gngCrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As far as I know the TPM has been implemented as a .kext file. Those are files that load up while OSX is starting. After the BIOS and the kernel has already loaded.
- lightningrod220, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem with the "hack it if you buy it" philosophy is that most of the hacks being done with the developer version of OSx86 were pirated after being copied from the disks and shared on bittorrent, etc. In addition, Apple's license agreement clearly states that you're only allowed to use the software on their Apple-made, Apple-branded machines, so you're already breaking the rules by hacking it. Two strikes against hacking... if you want to stay legal, anyway.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*yawn*. If people wouldn't hack it, they wouldn't have a problem.
They know as much as anyone they can't stop people forever, just make it difficult enough to make enough people not want to do it. Their OS is a big part of their livelihood, afterall.
Anyways, it won't matter too too much. You've still got to have a machine that can do EFI (which I know I don't), you've still got to have a machine with a Core Duo (as of the latest builds) and I know I don't, and I'm betting on TPM needing to be present as well, and I don't have one of those machines either. - Chaucer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's hilarious!
I bet it is the new TPM. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with the people who believe that if they bought a copy then they are morally entitled to run it on their non-apple hardware. Notice I say morally and not necessarily legally. I seriously doubt Apple would take you to court for incorrectly using purchased software though, how stupid would it make them look? Apple already made some profit out of you, so leave your morals at the installer, because I don't personally see harm done. Besides, it's a way to allow the platform to proliferate. It worked this way largely through windows. Before Microsoft played OEM licensing games, who actually payed for a copy of that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm sure building your own monster for a lot less money than an actual apple, (apple tax i think is what apple afficianados call it) and slapping osx on it wouldn't appeal to anyone anyway....
the new intel macs better be competitive or else.... you here me steve? - asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At the last Apple conference, I overheard one of them talk about it. It actually means "Don't steal FROM OS X" and is aimed at Microsoft due to the blatant things copied from OS X into Vista and is being advertised as Spankin' New.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Supercujo... Nice, now go get a job so you can actually afford a mac, instead of being jealous. = ) Actually No, sorry I take that back. You probably do already work...You probably Do already have the Best computer system on the PLanet... Nooooooo neeed to look anywhere else, all is well... I'm sure you have superior everything in every way. :) Ahhhh, now that feels better. Sorry for the above remark. Keep Pc'n.
- suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have to agree with aliguana in a sense, we all speculated that the new mactels would be a lot cheaper and that definitaly isnt the case. They are even more i believe which is just insane. Hopefully the new eventual macbook (ibook) will be a lot more reasonably priced and still have great performance. Hell id be willing to dish out for a mactel mini
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you buy OS X and get it to run on your own hardware, I don't really think there's anything to worry about. Who's gonna come after you, the Apple Police? It's yours. You paid for it. Do what you want with it.
- termal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Of course you realize that that fair/low price of Mac OS X is subsidized by Apple's hardware sales."
So how 'bout I run Vista on a powerbook, OSX on an Athlon X2 and we call the whole thing even? - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Job's doesn't want it "stolen", he should sell it himself.
OS X for Beige boxes would make Apple googles of dollars.
If he's SOOOOOO concerned that Apple is a hardware company... here's and idea.
OPEN SOURCE OS X.
You get the massive press boost of making Apple seem like the greatest people on Earth. BURY Bill and Windows, and your Hardware company becomes the darling platform of choice for ever developer, hacker, and with Intel inside, GAMER.
***** or get off the bowl Steve-O. But sitting there grunting all day is just making everyone wait for the inevitable. - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have heard the EFI can emulate a normal bios (to run windows XP) so why not use it to run OSX? is that where the TPM would step in?
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aimed at Microsoft,
iPod has a similar message when you first open the box,
Nothing new. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple's target audience, average users, have neither the skill nor the inclination to run any OS other than the one that comes preinstalled on their computers. That a few dedicated hackers are willing to jump through hoops to get OS X running on commodity hardware makes little or no difference--it might even boost hardware sales a bit.
- topper24hours, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Why would anyone steal OSX when there are much better operating systems (Windows XP/Vista/Linux)?"
Linux = free + secure + hard to use
Win Vista/XP = Very Expensive, highly insecure, (some assumption since one isn't out yet) + pretty easy to use
OSX = cheap + secure + very easy to use
Is it really that difficult to believe that our varied populace might have a variety of opinions on which of these is how you say...."much better"? - crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has been found in many of the past versions of the Mac OS. Nothing new. No dig.
- dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to the first comment: it's not that hilarious.

Wait until you see the machine you'll need to run Vista! - outkaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0So when can we download a copy for our beige boxes?
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0AHHHHHHHHH, h4xzor!!!!!!1111111111

- stevoie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OSX cheap!!!
the hardware to run it at a decent performance level is more expensive than the equivalent wintel box.
i guess you have to pay extra for the ease of use and security. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Why would anyone steal OSX when there are much better operating systems (Windows XP/Vista/Linux)?
