- ST0N3, on 02/09/2009, -1/+79how about google sync coming out for both windows mobile and iphone today? i think that's the solution everyone is looking for. now if gmail only had push email...
- MarkusX, on 02/10/2009, -2/+31Wait... comparing these two services is fine, but do I really have a choice?
MobileMe works only with iPhones, right?
So, if I don't have one, I have to use something else - be it My Phone or some other synching solution. - sjbdallas, on 02/10/2009, -28/+54Yeah, but it's also free of the pretentious stuck up feeling you get when buying something from Apple.
- 1nhuman, on 02/10/2009, -3/+24I use mobileme to sync two iPhones and two computers (one mobileme account). I sync contacts, calendars (several) and keychains. Keeps my wife's and my calendars in sync.
It's the only solution that works in a way so my non-geek wife can use it to. I tried everything else in the past, but nothing works. The reason it works is that it is transparent. You don't have to press a sync button, hook up a cable or setup a bluetooth connection. My wife enters something in a calendar and it shows up on my Macbook Pro, I add a contact to Address Book.app and it automatically is added to both our phones, etc.
We don't even use any of the other mobileme services except for the occasional upload of photos.
I'm happy to pay for it. I've been doing so for 4 years now (.mac before). Saves me a lot of stress. Anyway it's just 99 bucks a year. - phrenzy, on 02/10/2009, -7/+27Because in addition to mac users, digg also has users who don't get laid, judge each other by how many "cores" their CPU has, what framerate they get in WoW and whether the built their machine from parts.
- Macattack15, on 02/10/2009, -3/+16Why are we comparing these two services again? MobileMe is for storing information online, syncing data between your Macs and PCs, remotely accessing your Macs, and happens to also sync contacts and calendars with your iPhone/iPod touch. Microsoft's My Phone syncs all the data from your phone to an online server. There may be a tiny bit of overlap there, but until Apple really starts trying to push MobileMe as an end all be all solution for iPhone/iPod users I feel these services are aimed squarely at different camps.
- briguymaine, on 02/10/2009, -1/+13right on, in addition to what you mentioned, it's worth the price just for the web hosting and how well it ties into all of the iApps. My family website is on mobileme and updating with new video and pics is dead simple. And now google calendars and contacts can sync to iCal and Address Book, so I'm happy. I look on Amazon or J&R every year and find a renewal code for around $60 - 70, well worth it.
- 1nhuman, on 02/10/2009, -0/+12You don't need mobileme to backup your iPhone.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -4/+14wow... lame comment clak
- VyRuZ, on 02/10/2009, -7/+16Because Digg is also full of Mac people who can't shut the ***** up.
- digitalpencil, on 02/10/2009, -1/+9@vilago: you're not going to get a straight answer..
basically, diggers on the whole are anti-apple for a variety of reasons: they engage in (at least) morally dubious anti-competitive tactics (soft/hardware tie-ins etc), the hardware is seen as significantly marked-up in comparison to generic alternatives and many feel this is unwarranted given that, since the transition to intel chips, the internal hardware is identical to off-the-shelf gear.
Primarily though it is due to the view that all Apple users are basically snobs. After aggressive marketing campaigns (i'm a pc, i'm a mac) many windows users have felt vindicated as Macs are cast as cool, laid-back users and PCs, generic grey-box office workers with no concept of fun. This coupled with elevated costs, expressed feelings of OS superiority and a backlash against early unfair Vista-bashing has resulted in a pervasive stereotype of all mac-users as Starbucks-drinking snobs, who'll do just about anything that Cpl. Jobs commands, don't know how to operate a real PC and will buy anything as long as it's shiny, white and comes with a glowing logo.
In reality, there is an element of truth to both sides.. Many Apple users are snobs who think they're better than everyone else because of their iPhone. On the other, the majority of mac users use a variety of differently branded hardware (myself an MBP, Samsung phone and custom tower) and chose their machine due to being more familiar with OS X and generally preferring it over *nix/win. They're also common choices for graphic designers/web developers due to being commonly used in arthouses and educational establishments specializing in these fields (of course not all use macs) and amongst cross-platform developers.
I'm not overly sure why people pretend this isn't the case (as you say most things pro-mac get buried and most anti get dugg) but it has been the case here for many years now.
To be perfectly honest, many people here (being techies and geeks) define themselves not by their opinions and views but by their choice of hardware/OS. You're either a PC gamer or a console gamer, a *nix guy or a win guy etc. etc.
Basically people put far too much stock in their OS as a defining trait in their personality. - doctordbx, on 02/10/2009, -1/+9Tell me if you're succesful in purchasing a copy of Windows 7 Starter when it comes out.
- BradOFarrell, on 02/10/2009, -12/+17I have a mac and I just use gmail for everything. Whenever I see a @mac.com email from someone it just makes me think they're a yuppie sucker.
- abagchee, on 02/10/2009, -3/+81. Its comparing MobileMe with a service that's not launched yet. For all we know MyPhone might turn out to be worse or better than MobileMe. We don't know and you're an ass if you compare with expected features.
2. MobileMe is NOT just a phone sync service. It syncs any kind of file, preferences and such across numerous machines and your iPhone. It also has an email service and the easiest way to publish web sites and upload your media to share.
Rest of the article just reiterates what Microsoft's service will provide that Apple is already providing. Based on their track record - it'll never work. And the biggest problem with the service? I have to use a Windows Mobile device :O!! I'd rather use a Blackberry and save myself the frustration and grief. - RudeTurnip, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6I use Gmail for email and MobileMe mostly for iDisk and hosting a personal site that I maintain with iWeb. I spent $0.99 for a .info domain name so I don't have a site that looks like a subfolder of me.com. The @me.com email is just a secondary feature to me.
- Jb611, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6Thanks for the inspiring and informative post.
- betrayed, on 02/10/2009, -2/+7It's a phone. Not a computer. Do you understand how little space text occupies? 200mb is more than enough for a phone. My GMail account only has used 270mb since 2005, and you can chalk it up to a lot of attachments that I receive.
If you're backing up your music with something other than a reliable drive or a payed service, then you're doing yourself a disservice.
Burying you for being irrelevant. - vilago, on 02/10/2009, -9/+13why is digg so full of apple hatred? i'm just curious...
- surferjoemaui, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4Same here. I think a lot of people forget that website hosting (with your own domain name) for iWeb is the main reason for an account. For me the rest is gravy
- FreddieD, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4What if I'm a big fan of the usability of my Mac Mini and iPhone, yet I hate the pretentiousness of the apple culture? Does it make me a fan boy in one particular direction, or did I cancel myself out?
When I bought my Mac Mini from the Apple Store, the lady gave me grief because "I didn't make an appointment at the genius bar first" then got bounced around to another trendy employee wearing a headset who penciled me in for an "impromptu appointment" so I could talk to someone that had the ability to just give me the ***** product that I wanted to buy.
I felt like the kid at the eBay store on 40 Year Old Virgin... "I have this money, i'd like to just give you this money, then you can give me that box over there" - MacParrot, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5Counting out Microsoft is a mistake. My Phone (despite a kind of lame name though MobileMe is hardly much better) seems like an interesting first shot across the bow for those that use Windows Mobile. While this service is free, it doesn't offer many of the benefits that MobileMe (eventually and already working...somewhat) already has. Also remember that Google's cloud services are also free and cross-platform on the mobile side, something that neither Apple or Microsoft has been willing to do so far.
No matter what, between Google's services, MobileMe, and My Phone the next year promises to be interesting. - c010rb1indusa, on 02/10/2009, -8/+12Uh but Mobile Me also lets you back up files online not just calenders and contacts, plus it has a high rez video and photo sharing service which is probably the reason is costs bank.
- topgigmedia, on 02/10/2009, -2/+6Apple computers are an alternative option, period. It is a preference just like food is. I wish some of you would grow up a little.
/mac user - Subduction, on 02/10/2009, -14/+18They're just jealous that Apple is the Ferrari of computing products.
And by that I mean they're incredibly expensive, break down a lot, and aren't all that useful, but that doesn't keep their owners from not shutting their yappers for five minutes about how they've solved every problem short of world hunger. - vilago, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4@digitalpencil: you hit the nail right on the head. that's exactly what i wanted to know. i share your opinions as well, in fact when i was reading it, i realized i already knew the stuff you told me but never thought to put 2 and 2 together...
- saunders45, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5Gotta agree. It keeps things simple for the family.
- pulpjedi, on 02/10/2009, -2/+6I also want to add that MobileMe web galleries kick ass. I don't know of any other service that provides the sum total of features that those galleries offer, including 1-click downloading of ALL full-size photos and videos in a set. As I posted above, there are elements of MobileMe that you can get for free in a variety if different places. I pay for it because I want maximum functionality with minimum effort. $69 for a year of web hosting on top of all the other features in MobileMe is an awesome deal. The haters seriously don't know why they're talking about.
- franklymister, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4With articles like this, it's usually efficient to jump to the last paragraph to get it all in a nutshell.
FTA:
"It is difficult comparing a free My Phone service with a paid service – like the $99-a-year MobileMe. The membership price for MobileMe includes 20 GB of secure online storage on Apple's servers, jaw-dropping image galleries, an email account on the me.com domain, push contacts, calendars and photos syncing with applications on Mac and PC - all features My Phone does not offer. With that in mind, however, we still cannot help but feel that even the free My Phone 1.0 is going to give MobileMe a serious run for its money, at least when it comes to backing up your entire phone or moving content between several phones." - screwzluse, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3A "crippled" version that is free is still better then no free version at all, no? It really doesn't matter who does what better as neither is available for the competitors platforms.
- robogobo, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3whoa, let's wait to see if it even materializes. MS loves to talk.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Maybe. They *do* have SkyDrive already though...
- cawpin, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3@STON3 - That "product" is useless for anyone that actually uses Windows Mobile fully. You can have 1 ActiveSync connection on your phone. So if one uses it for work email, like me, you can't use Google's and vice versa. They need to make it a standalone app and be done with it.
- RobotBuddha, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3I'll agree. I thought I was pretty light on what I use, and I usually have around 6gb of data on my phone.
- pulpjedi, on 02/10/2009, -6/+9Okay, so I realize it's fun to rag on MobileMe. Maybe you just don't like the name - whatever. The thing is, MobileMe is a lot more than just sync services, especially if you own a Mac. It's not about competing with any individual services like gmail or flickr. For $69 (via Amazon), MobileMe provides me with web hosting, 1-click photo & video sharing, keeps all my Macs in perfect sync (and I don't just mean contacts), my email is never down despite that one famous outage during the transition, the iDisk service is quick and conveniant... And above all else, it's all perfectly integrated with my most important devices.
Anyone who bashes MobileMe has clearly never used it. If all you need is one of the services in the package, then yes you are better off with a free alternative. - chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -1/+3Microsoft bought this idea from Danger. (aka the sidekick)
http://digg.com/microsoft/Microsoft_Buys_Mobile_De ... - hongkongjapie, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2You haven't noticed the latest trend on digg is Apple bashing? Somehow I missed the press release but it appears Apple is the new Microsoft!
- kreatre2007, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2This is a bit premature until Microsoft launches their service.
- Tunie, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3There is no versus.....They are not (truly) competing. Only works with the iPhone..Sugarsync ist he closes thing to a Mobileme rival....
- FreddieD, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2I found it funny after the fact. At the time though, I found it very annoying. They weren't pissed or anything, but their reactions indicated that saying "I would like the $599 mac mini please. No thanks, I dont have any questions or need a demo of how it works" was definitely going against the grain.
- tnoy, on 02/10/2009, -2/+4*boyfriend
Fixed. - vilago, on 02/10/2009, -2/+4not trying to beat the horse here, but i kind of want a serious answer. all i get is negative answers for or against apple. i just want to know why digg in particular is so anti-apple, especially when there is an apple article every other day on the front page...
- onelikeseabass, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3I don't want to come off as promoting another brand so I won't.
My point is that my device receives push mail from multiple Google accounts (while keeping it all separate) and it does so expeditiously. - Tennouheika, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3What's that? Apple not charge ridiculous rates for a less than or equal to product? I don't think so.
- jakem1, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3I've missed you clak. I really feel like I'm part of something bigger than me when I digg you down.
- VyRuZ, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Did that seriously happen to you?!
Appointments to buy products. Hah. Laugh in their face, you should have. - mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2@ TrancePhreak RE: " You just described MyPhone, which is just a free Exchange service..."
Did you even RTFA ?
FTA :
" My Phone conflicts with Exchange
My Phone won't let you sync your contacts and calendars with the Exchange server and the My Phone cloud at the same time. If you have Exchange syncing already set up, My Phone will not sync your contacts, calendars, or tasks. " - JasonCox, on 02/10/2009, -2/+4Me, personally, I pay $9.99 a month for a single hosted Exchange account. MobileMe is just fail, My Phone won't work with my iPhone and honestly I don't trust Google with my email and personal info.
- trevorjez, on 02/10/2009, -1/+3You do realize that Google Sync licensed Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol for sharing information between a server and mobile phone?
- mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2You have to understand that "My Phone" is really only useful for those phones running Windows Mobile.
Of those WinMo based phones, most of them have hardly any storage built into the phone, and the "My Phone" service specifically states it will NOT sync data that's on anything other than what's on the WinMo phone itself.
FTA :
" My Phone also won't sync contacts stored on the SIM card. To sync these contacts, you will need to copy them first to your phone's memory. Any content stored on a memory card will not be included in the sync ... " - haydentech, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Wow, I never noticed Amazon had it for $69 until now. That makes it a much better deal.
