- JumboJ3t, on 11/02/2009, -9/+131Cue the comments saying that the EULA prohibits hackintosh installations anyway, but I would call this a pretty lame move by Apple. OSx86 expands Apple's user base; this looks to be a blatant move to keep hackbooks from cutting into their forthcoming tablet sales.
- mkriss5681, on 11/02/2009, -13/+115God forbid Apple make a compact AFFORDABLE netbook. Hackintoshes prove that they work in concept. It's a shame Apple won't cater to this audience. With Linux and now Win7 working on tablets, Apple will be forced to play catchup.
The only problem is "Apple Laptops" and "affordable" have never really gone to together. Apple will have to completely change their corporate culture, which I don't see happening anytime soon. Its a shame, because I see laptops in the $500 price range to be the future, not the $1000 or more that Apple offers. - bjornski, on 11/02/2009, -4/+100Yeah, it's been AGES since I've seen an Apple commercial that actually talked about the benefits of Apple software.
ALL of their advertising is basically just "Windows sucks". - pgriffinmonmout, on 11/02/2009, -25/+117Mac: Hey PC, did you just hear? Windows 7 is coming out on Netbooks?
PC: Hey Mac. Yea Netbooks are the future. Small, portable, efficient, and cheap.
Mac: Well, you know, we did this like a year ago with MacBook Air. Except we doubled the price instead of halving it.
PC: Oh? How'd that work out for ya? $2,000 vs. $500?
Mac: Windows 7 sucks. Get a Mac.
PC: But why should I get a Mac?
Mac: Because Windows 7 sucks.
PC: But why should I get a Mac?
Mac: Because Windows 7 sucks. - badqat, on 11/02/2009, -13/+91So I'll just stay at 10.6.1. Problem solved.
Still a crappy thing for Apple to do. - chthonical, on 11/02/2009, -0/+60Uh oh. Looks like Mac is stuck in a kernel panic again.
- EtherGnat, on 11/02/2009, -9/+69Just the push I needed to switch from (legally purchased) OSX to Windows 7 on my Netbook. Apple may not care, but the exposure to their OS was increasing the odds I'd buy more of their products in the future.
- ScientistBlah, on 11/02/2009, -2/+49Not saying that I agree with apple doing this, but like, no ***** this was going to happen. Anyone saying "I can't believe apple would do this, it doesn't make any sense!" is jut plain ignorant.
- chockster, on 11/02/2009, -3/+45They cater to a premium market. It's treated them very well so far, so I doubt that'll change soon. They COULD make a cheap netbook and sell a ton. Or they could make some tablet thing, sell less but at a higher price.
Stevie is very protective of that premium brand image. - Centurion89, on 11/02/2009, -14/+54LEAVE NETBOOKS ALONE
- avidlinuxuser, on 11/02/2009, -19/+58Go Apple! Continue your streak of ensuring that your customers must pay a fair bit for your product even though the parts cost less than half what you charge.
- Ac1115, on 11/02/2009, -0/+38Well you still could buy one and run 10.6.1.
And to be honest, I'd be surprised if the hackintosh community didn't eventually release a fix for this. It wouldn't be the first time they've had to make missing drivers and subvert security features. - Hodor, on 11/02/2009, -11/+45FUUUUU
- poonaka, on 11/02/2009, -4/+37I was just about to buy one :(
- TylerDuhrdan, on 11/02/2009, -4/+36I was a massive mactard for years, when Stevie said no on the Blu-ray I installed Windows on my mac pro and switched from Final Cut Studio to premiere Pro and Encore.
Windows really wasn't that bad (I came in with Vista) When 7 came out I really liked it and bought my first actual PC (HDX18 laptop) and like Windows alot) Though i dual boot OSX and Win 7 on the laptop I am in Windows more. now I see these stupid ***** Mac commercials now and instead of laughing and saying "yeah, piss off windows" I find myself screaming "piss off apple" as all they do if spout *****. Especcially the newest one where PC talks about how 7 is an update to vista is to xp is to xp is to 98, etc, ***** there was never anything wrong with xp or 2000, Apple needs a fact check.
My wife wanted a new 27" iMac quad core, I bought all the parts for her off Newegg to build a clone and we got better parts for 1/2 the price.
No Apple hardware is worth it. ***** my quad core HDX has more features and was cheaper than a Macbook pro. - unmarked, on 11/02/2009, -8/+38That's called "running a business".
But to be fair, their profit margins are around 30-35%, not 50% or more as you claim. - Giac, on 11/02/2009, -1/+27is anyone really surprised?
- gamersedge, on 11/02/2009, -0/+25Because this is TOTALLY going to stop hackintoshers.
- RudeTurnip, on 11/02/2009, -6/+31Well, why don't just you start your own high-end design company and then start selling low-end hardware with tiny margins...except you can do it better by adding blackjack and hookers! In fact, forget the margins altogether!
- tacojohn48, on 11/02/2009, -17/+39A company wants to make money. Oh the horror.
- biliabong6, on 11/02/2009, -9/+27Sometimes I wish their 5% market share actually mattered to Microsoft, so MS could be like "Hey, you know, I don't think we should allow Office to support Mac."
Why does Mac think they are the big bully? They are still little fish in a big pond. - TonyTheTerrible, on 11/02/2009, -10/+27oh no, now what will i do!
/s - bjornski, on 11/02/2009, -6/+23It's hardly a Ferrari. It's more like the difference between a Ford and a Lincoln.
Same parts, does the same thing, but one costs an assload more because it looks nicer and has that fancy name-tag on it. - AndreiSavin, on 11/02/2009, -13/+30Lol @ these comments. Apple do whatever they want with THEIR producs. They have the right to fix the prices and write the licences. If you're not happy with this, just use something else.
- tacojohn48, on 11/02/2009, -0/+16Remember even piracy helps Microsoft keep it's market share.
- bigbadgoat, on 11/02/2009, -1/+17By selling a lower end laptop, they'd be devaluing their brand. Won't happen.
- sembetu, on 11/02/2009, -1/+16If, and I must emphasize, 'If' this happens, then what Apple fails to realize it that, if the OSx86 teams out there want it badly enough, they'll find a way. Remember, just because it hasn't been easy, hasn't prevented the various OSx86 projects to continue. Wait for a bit, and a patch will come out that addresses the problem. It my be in the form of a kext, or through inserting the required atom code back into an installation image. Regardless, if people want it bad enough, they will do what it takes to get it done.
By the way, in my opinion, this is the sort of move by Apple that confuses me. As a matter of fact, not just Apple, but many other companies. It actually spans the gap from record labels, to movie studios, to software and hardware vendors of varying types. If you see the adoption curve rising outside of your original targeted platform or demographic, why not embrace the 'homebrew' community, and provide an offering that meets the niche. Of course there will always be those who want to tinker, but offer up a solid netbook with OSX, for under $500.00, and I'm sure Apple would have a field day. Particularly if they put some sufficient horsepower behind it.
Just My .02 - FormerBabby, on 11/02/2009, -6/+21I'm sure if MS made a similar move their would howls of pain and comments on how much better Apple is.
- thefox84, on 11/02/2009, -3/+18So I guess the upcoming touchscreen tablet will NOT be using an Intel Atom processor... interesting.
- raydeen, on 11/02/2009, -0/+15That was quit unexpected.
- yttrstein, on 11/02/2009, -11/+26Or, the lot of you could just stop complaining and use an operating system and environment that actually is completely open source and is meant for things like netbooks, such as Linux.
Apple wants you to run THEIR operating system on THEIR hardware. If you don't want to do that, then you're perfectly free to select an operating system/hardware combination that suits your need to pay less money. Apple isn't limiting anyone's choice here, they're limiting people's sense of entitlement. No wonder everyone is so cranky. - Skurt, on 11/02/2009, -8/+23It's still a Dick move.
- Angostura, on 11/02/2009, -10/+24I'm not sure "protecting revenue" is particularly lame.
- ethamajin, on 11/02/2009, -4/+18***** YOUUUU DOLPHINNNN AND WHAAALE!!!
- N0DIGGITY, on 11/02/2009, -0/+14windows 7 still runs just fine on them :)
- Jlaugh, on 11/02/2009, -1/+14MS would never do that they want to be on as many machines as possible.
- chockster, on 11/02/2009, -3/+15I don't totally agree with that. Yes, if you take all the components individually it'll look like that. But the reason I switched to Mac (and continue to buy them) is the build quality. My old laptop was a Toshiba... the components were fine, but the thing was just terribly built- flimsy as all hell and one of the catches on the screen ended up snapping off. My Macbook is made from one solid block of aluminium and the difference is noticeable.
I'm no fanboy, but what I'm saying is that there are other things to bear in mind that just pricing up every individual component. As someone said above, what about the accessible tech support, also? - MMaster23, on 11/02/2009, -0/+12Officially it can't even run on AMD cpus .. yet Hackintosh can. This means nothing people. Will take 1 night to hack.
- phogasmic, on 11/02/2009, -0/+12"I like having the freedom to build and upgrade my own computer. " So then don't buy a Mac, they aren't for you.
- Ac1115, on 11/02/2009, -0/+11It's nothing about corporate culture. It's the notion "you get what you pay for" which is why Apple sells at higher prices.
Swiss watch companies often quadruple prices when exporting to the US. And neck ties strangely sell more at 50 dollars than at 10. Apple isn't at fault for using the preconceived notions many consumers have drilled into them since birth.
Apple wouldn't do well in creating a low cost netbook. Yes, they could, but I bet they're afraid of it cannibalizing their sales of higher end products with higher margins. Rightfully so, in my opinion.
Also, the gross profit on the netbooks wouldn't go a long way to cover the 'Apple look' and customer support. Unlike other manufactures, Apple has stuck with US based tech support which I assume is more expensive than off-shoreing it to Asia. And not to mention all the genius bars which are company owned.
Although I'm kinda disappointed with this rumor if it's true. I actually ended up buying a real mac after playing around with a hackintosh. I wonder if they've considered that opportunity :-/ - thesportoflife, on 11/02/2009, -8/+19iWork is ***** great. Does everything I need to and has a nice clean GUI unlike the mess that Office is.
- geodebug, on 11/02/2009, -5/+16People who buy Sony must love being boxed in. Don't build your own stereo, don't upgrade your TV and don't question Sony. That's why I hate Sony. I don't care how "wonderful" their electronics are. I like having the freedom to build and upgrade my own electronics. But hey, if you bought your stereo to just listen to it or your television to just watch programming, have fun losers.
In summary: the majority of computer buyers of all kinds buy it to run programs and get ***** done, not to make a hobby of dicking around with the innards. - ThantiK, on 11/02/2009, -4/+15Because yeah, a check for a processor type is a WHOLE BUNCH OF BLOAT RIGHT?
- bigbadgoat, on 11/02/2009, -2/+13He probably thinks that cost of developing the software and drivers and maintenence of that software, nevermind the cost of manufacturing and repairing them has nothing to do with the cost of producing a laptop.
- eatrains, on 11/02/2009, -9/+20Please tell how this is Apple being a bully. They removed support for a piece of hardware that they weren't using in their product line. Why bloat up the operating system with stuff that's not being used? Apple's not in the business of supporting and catering to hackers.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -0/+11Indeed, the entitlement rants are incredulous little gems of comedy.
- WoollyMittens, on 11/02/2009, -5/+15I'm here to enjoy the entitlement rants.
- GothAlice, on 11/02/2009, -2/+11Apple and Microsoft have completely different business models.
- digg1520, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9Not everyone wants to mess around with motherboards, graphics cards, drivers and all that. Some people just need a computer to get something done. I used to build and repair my own PCs when I was younger, too, but now I just want something that works, and I'll gladly pay a few hundred bucks more to save me the time.
- unmarked, on 11/02/2009, -11/+20That threat is a lot weaker now than it was 10 years ago. Most people only use MS Office because they HAVE to, not because they WANT to and iWork + Apple Mail gives you 95% of what most people ever use in MS Office and for quite a bit less.
If you don't like what Apple is doing, then buy a PC with Windows 7. That's how market forces work. -
