- DoMaurier, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1010In other news, every BitTorrent site in the world has announced that they'll still be carrying NBC shows. Enjoy the revenue drop you greedy *****.
- mikesay98, on 10/10/2007, -6/+961I'm not an Apple fanboy, but I say good for Apple. Instead of letting NBC Universal make plans for other services, Apple's going to cut them off to let them see how much revenue will be lost. $4.99 per episode...give me a break. Why would I pay more than $100 per season for a show that I can buy off of DVD later on for about a fourth of the price??!!
- chrisgeleven, on 10/10/2007, -2/+371I don't see how NBC wins on this one. Apple basically said "hey, we have 50 cable companies that see no problems with $1.99 an episode. Let's see what the public thinks about this."
Only way I could ever see a price increase in iTunes is if there were a video version of iTunes Plus with no DRM and HD quality downloads. - fuzzmeister, on 10/10/2007, -1/+325Releasing this information was a brilliant PR move by Apple, as now consumers can see just how greedy NBC was being, and how they were being the "aggressor".
- jerrycan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+234HD version available at an extra cost of $0.00
- mazerrackham, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2295 bucks?? Someone smacked their head on the moneybin diving board one too many times.
- nace33, on 10/10/2007, -4/+192I won't be buying anything from NBC from now on. $4.99 per episode, yeah right. Heroes is the best show they have had in a long time and I would rather not watch it than pay over $100 per season. Especially since I can buy an external TV tuner, hook it up to my mac and get Free HD OTA.
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/10/2007, -2/+171NBC doesn't seriously believe they have any leverage in internet distribution, do they?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+161***** NBC
- djSyndrome, on 10/10/2007, -5/+153And NBC wonders why they're in last place among major national networks.
1. Kill off nearly all of your good programming and replace it with garbage.
2. Attempt to rape your few remaining fans.
3. ?????
4. Don't profit! - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -3/+138It's great to see a company standing up to media instead of bending over backwards to meet rediculous demands. We'll see how NBC likes being cut off from what must have been a fairly good stream of revenue.
- mmzplanet, on 10/10/2007, -3/+115Thats exactly it.... why pay more for something that is much much less on DVD later... then just use Handbrake or something to put it in iTunes.
- glock22ownr, on 10/10/2007, -4/+98Aaaah, well.... bit torrent it is I guess... oh well, more money for me.
- GruntboyX, on 10/10/2007, -4/+93I take it the comb over execs at nbc dont play chess.
NBC: "I got it...we will pull the plug on itunes midway through our season and offer the content on our own web site. We will mark the price up and the consumer will pay for it because they will have been hooked all season long."
Intern in the corner: " What if apple pulls the plug on the content before January? and didnt their PR department just make the entire music industry look bad over the whole drm issue?"
NBC: " Shut up you dont know what your talking about...now light my cigar give me more brandy and turn up the reruns of Frasier" - Quix, on 10/10/2007, -3/+81We consumers don't deserve DRM-free music because we're all criminals. And we don't deserve downloadable television programming at a rational price (and even $1.99/show is too much).
I'm done with anything NBC or Universal. TV, music, movies...if it says "Universal" I'm not buying. Period.
My money goes to companies that treat me with respect. - schizogony, on 10/10/2007, -2/+76Most MOVIES are hardly worth $4.99, let alone a single episode of a TV show that you can watch for free when it airs. Sheesh, you'd think NBC would be a little more "with it" than this.
- uptown, on 10/10/2007, -3/+76This would make a season of TV for one show cost approximately $109 (assuming 22 episodes). All of this without any tangible product at a reduced resolution paying for something that is available for free over the air, and sold or rented in DVD form in an aftermarket for far less than that. How does NBC not see the insanity in their proposal?
- monsterofNone, on 10/10/2007, -7/+76NBC has a three shows that appeal to the web 2.0 crowd (Heroes, Office, & BSG) and they think they can start gouging. this will be seen as an epic mistake as ABC & TNT shows fill the void.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/10/2007, -4/+68Please don't refer to me as a member of the "Web 2.0 Crowd"
- moocow1452, on 10/10/2007, -6/+69The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/10/2007, -8/+69Handbrake? But that's illegal--and it always has been... since 1998. You need to buy the same show on each new format you decide to use. Or do you really just hate Hollywood? You know, there are hungry sound recorders and editors out there who need you to buy that season of 30 Rock multiple times.
- MatttK, on 10/10/2007, -5/+64I think $1.99 is already a lot. Think about how much cable costs and how many shows you watch. Then figure out how much each show is costing you. It's probably a lot less than $1.99 for most people (not me since I just watch Daily Show / Colbert via BitTorrent).
- qwertydvorak, on 10/10/2007, -7/+63"I'm done with anything NBC or Universal. TV, music, movies...if it says "Universal" I'm not buying. Period."
there goes USB devices, universal remotes, and universal time... - superkendall, on 10/10/2007, -2/+56Even for HD, $5 is about a dollar more than I would be willing to pay per episode for pretty much anything. At that price I really would either wait for a season disc or (more likely) use BitTorrent.
- MacEnvy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+52Don't you start knocking 30 Rock, now.
I want Tina Fey to have my babies. - Zap2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+51Screw you NBC, glad Apple stuck to its guns
- ncapone, on 10/10/2007, -17/+65For once Apple realizes something cost too much.
- shieldss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+46Where to complain:
Call Joe Libonati, NBC Universal Television Group Publicity @ 1-818-840-3050
And Amy Zelvin, NBC Universal Digital Media Communications @ 1-212-664-7436
Be nice (the receptionist is not the one making these decisions) but let them know how you feel. - RossPelton, on 10/10/2007, -1/+44If it's not on itunes, people will start going to the Pirate Bay and NBC will get $0 per download. But I guess that's what NBC wants us to start doing.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44Wow 20 bucks a month to watch one show. ***** Em!
- SnuKs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+42NBC is probably ***** their pants after readin this. I wonder how they're gonna spin it. You FAIL nbc.. you were on a platform that sold over 50 million episodes with a show that is a HUGH hit. Just gotta be greedy...
- bilbravo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+45Well I'm not condoning their pricing model, but I would imagine their answer would be something along the lines of "convenience" or "the price you pay for getting it sooner".
However, it's not worth $4.99 ... that's 250% of the previous price! - zweben, on 10/10/2007, -3/+42Hey guys, I can't get to http://how-to-spell-rediculous.com, is it down or something?
/sarcasm - Kronos6948, on 10/10/2007, -5/+41eztv ftw.
- wafflez, on 10/10/2007, -5/+36ridiculous*
- Linh, on 10/10/2007, -4/+33yay for the return of suprnova....
- hexydes, on 10/10/2007, -5/+34Uhm, I watch NBC over the air in HD for free. So $1.99, to me, is much, much more than I would be willing to pay. At $4.99, it might as well be $1 million because I won't buy it either way.
These shows are free over the air, and easily acquired by BitTorrent. They should be going for $.25 on iTunes (that's right, twenty-five cents), with a full season subscription getting a discount of $3.99 (assuming around 20 episodes in the season). I would actually be inclined to get it at that point. Hell, subsidize it with commercials, I don't care. Just make them skippable. - IAmMacLovin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+30Who are the ad wizards that came up with this one?
- jmhyer51, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29That seemed unnecessary.
- toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28she's having mine. back off!
- andydumi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25HD downloads ought to be there already. Its a ripoff to create a two tier system. Then again its a ripoff at 1.99 with the quality of the video as it is. I would rather pay Comcast or Tivo 10 bucks a month and make sure I dont miss any of the episodes in HD.
- GetDownMoses, on 10/10/2007, -2/+26How is $1.99 not MORE than reasonable for NBC? 23 episodes of The Office from iTunes would cost $46. Buying the DVD of Season 3 (same 23 episodes) costs $32, including bonus features, not to mention you actually get a physical copy. Even after sharing the revenue with Apple, NBC had to be making more money selling on iTunes, considering there are ZERO distribution costs.
- knightboat, on 10/10/2007, -7/+31http://www.how-to-spell-ridiculous.com
- chicagobiker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23With an almost predictable 2,700+ seed base and each new episode appearing within' 30 minutes after air time. Bit Torrent seems like a much better option anyway since it's usually HD xvid.
- Quix, on 10/10/2007, -5/+28Boycott NBC Universal.
- JDex, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25I won't purchase another NBC show from iTunes now... I've always felt that $1.99 was a premium on half hour shows, and an "almost" fair price for compressed DRM'd to death hour long shows. I may go as far as ending "purchases" of all NBC|Universal content from any provider.
- turquoisefish, on 10/10/2007, -5/+27Oh noes.
How will I get my episodes of The Office now? I think $1.99 is a good price, but $4.99 is ridiculous, unless they are before broadcast date or something else exclusive. - chrisgeleven, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24That doesn't help you if you are on a plane or in some other location that has no internet ac cess.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Try these:
Amy Zelvin, NBC Universal Digital Media Communications, (212) 664-7436 amy.zelvin@nbcuni.com
Joe Libonati, NBC Universal Television Group Publicity, (818) 840-3050 joe.libonati@nbcuni.com
Courtesy of buddhistMonkey - Fisa, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Irrational??? It's 499/199. Maybe not exactly pretty, but certainly rational.
