- tacojohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah- I'm going to be a typical Apple nut and complain that it's not bluetooth. Their bluetooth mouse works the best out of every bluetooth mouse I've used.
- kruton6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Has anyone thought about this infringing on a copyright from a little cartoon mouse? Did Apple optain this designation legally or just do it because it sounded cool?
- azarial, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"I thought that I was warming up to Mac, but now it's all flooding back to me why I hate it."
Wow you must be a total idiot, you and Evil. You hate Mac because of a mouse? Theres two things at play here, one being that you likely have never ever sat down infront of an Apple computer for a full day. The other is that you have nothing better to hate than a company that actually makes very good products (OSX is one of the most advanced and safest OS') because of the simple fact that you have been jealous all this time. Its sad, it really is. - sfgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The mouse is FORTY NINE BUCKS.. NOT SEVENTY.
RTFA...Sheesh. - xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Thank you evil. $70+ for a mouse that's not even wireless??? I thought that I was warming up to Mac, but now it's all flooding back to me why I hate it. Mac fanboys waste your money on this. I'll use my $10 mouse that is in all ways superior."
Damn I hate flamers and if gonna flame at least be logical.. first that's $70+ AU (Australian Dollars!!) did you even check it on apple.com? anyway I highly doubt that a $10 mouse is superior than this it's not your typical wired optical mouse Touch-sensitive buttons, built-in "clicking" sound effects, mini scroll ball, pressure-sensitive side-clicks. I don't think I have seen one out there that currently offers those this is coming from a Linux user you gotta give it up to the apple design engineers cause they are arguably the best in product design.. - ericpp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I believe hell has frozen over!
- davidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now if only the made it the standard mouse for their systems...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dunno. Notice the buttons are "static-like". Remember when they went to static buttons on the ipod 2G? The lack of physical feedback that a button was pressed made you hover your finger over the button and tap carefully. Granted, this new Mighty Mouse has audio feedback built in, I still think it will be a bit creepish to use at first. And if you are deaf, if there is no vibration feedback, you can look elsewhere. Which begs the question, if you are deaf and blind, you are stuck with a mouse that doesn't tell you if the button has been pressed, and you cannot look elsewhere. Damn, I am going to hell!
Sweet little bit of engineering, though. Kudos to Apple for finding a way to straddle the one button/two button mouse thing. I know a lot of little 3 year olds (and elderly) that really can do without the extra stuff. Cool they kept that capability.
/sorry to ramble on - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm pretty excited over this mouse but I have to say, I am not buying it. I have only recently bought a Logitech MX1000 and it works great and I don't feel a need to switch from it to the Mighty Mouse which I assume won't be near as good. It is rather expensive I have to say though AU$79 for a corded mouse...
- bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Should we say; "And so it begins."?
- mattomori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this should have been done a long time ago
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@owenkun: Yeah, it's called the SpaceORB 360. I've got one sitting under my desk right now. I still can't believe it was a serial device. Also, I never did get used to the feel of it, hence the reason for its consignment to my workstation's nether regions. Its killer app was supposed to be Descent II, for which it worked surprisingly well.
- enjayenel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mouse nipple?
- onager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First Apple switches to UNIX with OS X...
Then they announce that they will x86 compatible processors..
And now this.. a multi-button mouse!
I can't believe that the conspiracy theorists haven't gone nuts. I mean, they'd probably be on to something!!! - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"imtigger2- OS X supports right clicking. If you have the one-button mouse, you just press ctrl+click to access it,"
What if I only have one arm? - WickedOwl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1doesnt the white minimalism get annoying after a while?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0imtigger2- OS X supports right clicking. If you have the one-button mouse, you just press ctrl+click to access it, and you can just attach a two-button mouse if you need the second button. In most apps for OS X, the right click menu is actually found in the main menu toolbar. CTRL+click or right click is just a short cut to it.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IBM has had a mouse for YEARS with the little "stick" that lets you scroll around a page in any direction.
- h31pc0mpu73r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet mouse...but 50 bucks. Ouch.
- imtigger2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Seriously. I bet half of the PC market never bought a Mac just because of the one button mouse... ;)"
Yup... that was me, making my decision that sent me on the road to PC's in 1989! It's nice that Apple will have this mouse, but will their OS support right-clicks? I can't BELIEVE it currently doesn't. Lame. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW. First the Watergate thing, then Debian releases a new version, and now a two button mouse from Apple. Looks like some bastard has started his improbability drive.
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, what are the Flamers going to bitch about now?
"Macs are expensive.. uh.. They only have one button.. uh... they don't have a lot of software.. uh... you're GAY! Yeah that's it!"
And officially, it seems that there are four buttons. Left, Right, Click Ball, and side. I don't think there's been anything like the scroll ball before, some mice have had the left/right wheel, but that's a clicking wheel. This seems like you can 360 scroll a page, which is kinda useless but fun. I can see designers eating this up, imagine not having to use the Hand tool ever AGAIN! - prax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever took them so long is one thing.
But in the end, its here and it looks sweet. - Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"every other computer maker has been doing this for over 20 years! even $20 children's toy computers have multi button mice."
Yes, but this is not a regular multi-button, this is a touch reactive single button mouse that detects left/right clicks, and gives audio tactile response through the built in speaker. It is also the only mouse i've seen that does 360 deg scrolling.
"IBM has had a mouse for YEARS with the little "stick" that lets you scroll around a page in any direction."
We have those on our NetVista's at work. THEY SUCK! It's either 100% or off. They're way too sensitive, a standard scroll wheel works much better. - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When will it be available to order with the iMac G5's?
- spraymaster8357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in regards to keng about a device to print what is on the screen, if you hold the command+shift+3 key it will take a screen shot then u can print that or command+shift+4 will give u a selection window then u can drag the area u want a snapshot of and print that
- ScottBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 It really is a shame that a bluetooth version wasn't launched along side Mighty Mouse. Perhaps they will release "Mighty Mouse Extreme" or something in the coming months. I've only had my Apple bluetooth mouse for about 5 months and I absolutely love it. I can do without the other thingamajigs for a while.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Asystole:
I was just listing that as one example of how the OS does not seem intuitive for me. I didn't feel like writing a book. Another problem I had recently was that my m-i-l had a cdr that was supposed to have jpegs on it. I put the disk in the drive and it thought about it for a few seconds and spit it back out. No error msg, nothing. I put it in my pc and was able to verify that there was nothing on the disk. How often do you put a disk in your tray and the tray opens back up spitting the disk out at you? How about never. Again, I didn't feel like writing a book. The Mac OS just rubs me wrong. I don't like their GUI and I don't like the mechanics. It's called an opinion. I realize not everyone shares this opinion, but I'm allowed to have one. - crankx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So even after they finally released a 2 button mouse the M$ people came out to comment about how it cost less to buy a PC - mouse. They can't just be happy which I have come to expect from people who have invested so much time in a product with so many flaws. I spent a lot of money fixing my first car and no matter what anyone told me that for what I spent fixing it I could have bought a better truck for much less.. It is a psychological condition a PC user will never admit something is better when they have invested so much to keep the PC running.. I am happy apple has released a 2 button mouse but I have been using a logitech for months and it works great. The 2 button option has been there forever..
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Mighty Mouse allows you to right click without a right button. Capacitive sensors under Mighty Mouse’s seamless top shell detect where your fingers are and predict your clicking intentions, so you don’t need two buttons"
Now that sounds like it will screw up a lot. It sounds like any bump or slight pressure on the mouse will result in a click.
The best part of that thing is the little track ball on top. left/right scrolling will be useful. Though I feel left right will be used a lot less then up/down and that a track ball might result in unwanted left/right drift when you are trying to use up/down. I would like to see a standard wheel mouse adopt a left right but make it so you tilt the wheel left and right and it scrolls only up/down like normal. - ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want one so bad I hope it works in Linux Windows AND Mac!
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This article has over 1000 diggs?
Something is majorly wrong with the users of this site.
The editors have no taste. - owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone remember those '3D mice/trackballs' they had back around the time that Quake I was out? It was like a controller, but also had a large sphere that you'd twist to alter your viewport (looking up and down, off to the side, etc.). I wonder if the ball on this mouse could be used like that? It'd make a great application for FPSes!
- julien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been a mac user for a long time. Even before it was cool to do so. I always said: "Anything a PC can do, a Mac can do better." I was told: "Try right clicking." Now I will.
- plague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, I'm a little late to comment here, but am I the only one not reaching for the hand lotion every time apple comes out with some new piece of crap? This is the ugliest mouse I've ever seen. Touch sensitive? A speaker inside instead of a regular click? Squeezing both sides to do something that another button could easily accomplish? And all this useless junk for only $50... I swear the ipod's "halo effect" is nothing more than Steve Jobs whispering sweet nothings into your crappy white headphones while your music plays telling you to pay too much money for his latest crap.
I'll stick to my 8 button MX510 with more features and better resolution that cost me less money. - RDurfee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that Apple has a multi-button mouse, all the Mac fans can stop spewing the "more than one button is too complicated" crap. While I am intrigued by the scroll ball, the speaker to make click sounds is just stupid. I won't even start on the name.
- theplug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like how there are two side buttons, but you can only program them for one action. You should at least have the option of designating:
Left side: Action 1
Right side: Action 2
Left + right: Action 3 - jojoko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im na be an ass and complain that it has wires.
- Tom_Riddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0all I can say is "i'm buying one!". but i might wait for the bluetooth version... we'll see
- Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"While I am intrigued by the scroll ball, the speaker to make click sounds is just stupid."
[sarcasm]
Just as stupid as the tactile click on the iPod scroll wheel.
Or windows' system wide audible click.
[/sarcasm] - hobbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0macgabriel87 -- Apple didn't rip-off jack-sh*t from Xerox, that's a common misconception. Why not read an article from someone who there during that time:
http://jef.raskincenter.org/published/holes.html - Function, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"hey wanna know something amazing? it shouldn't matter what a mouse looks like"
Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clear to the bone.
http://www.heferito.com/stupidriceboys2.asp
Shouldn't matter what it looks like! - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll just stick to my logitech MX518, the best mouse out there right now. hey wanna know something amazing? it shouldn't matter what a mouse looks like, your hand is going to be on it most of the time. Thing looks uncomfortable as well. It's apple trying to be different when there is already a product that is superior to it for the same price, it makes no sense to buy an inferior product for the same price as the best product out there.
- AaronD12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are quoting Australian dollars.
I think this mouse looks sweet, but I will be trying it out before replacing my one-button mouse.
-Aaron- - evil, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not to start a flame, but to defend myself because I have some free time today...Azarial, I was COMPLIMENTING the mouse! Sure, it has the same functionality as most mice these days, but I thought it looked pretty slick and really like the trackball wheel thingy! As for your "you obviously never used a Mac" rant, I have a Mac and a PC in front of me as I type this. Did I say Apple stuff sucked? No, I said it was generally overpriced for what you get. The PC I use is a lot faster and was a lot cheaper. BTW, OSX is a really nice OS, but it really doesn't offer ME anything I didn't have with XP. And theres a good argument to be made that it's security is by obscurity (4.5% of the entire PC market). So calm down, and return to your Steve Jobs shrine, and rub your iPod Shuffle rosary.
- cheztir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0craping sweet. I am buying one as soon as it comes out, time to replace the sucking kensington mouse (the only two button mouse to match a mac)
- pixelpuncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here I come to save the day?
The trackball feature is interesting but most new scroll wheels allow you to do the same thing buy pressing them to the right and left etc.
This is something to try before you buy. - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about "Open link in new window" is that supported in MacOS w/ a right click?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0chriskzoo- Then buy a two button mouse. OS X supports right clicking from a two button mouse and I mentioned that in my post. If you can't afford a two button mouse or steal one from a friend, it's in the menu bar.
example: I'm in safari right now. Highlighting text. Right under edit is copy, cut, paste, all the good "right click" stuff. - sergio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks nice, but I won't be getting it. I'm quite happy with my Logitech MX 3100 setup.
