- shadfc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2someone explain why you would want to increase your buffers when you have a "high latency" connection? Wouldnt that just increase your delay since your "high latency" is probably due to your cable modems send/rcv buffers being full?
- lowbot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2---Beware, a lot of these optimizers just open up your receive window and other simple tricks which may help in bulk transfers but tend to kill latency, which is really important in gaming, voip, and even loading webpages.
After running TCP/IP Optimizer my ping to google.com went from 40-50 to 70-80ms. When I load 15 pages at the same time with firefox it must have taken 3x as long.
Normally, you should never have to change these settings. - jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"pretty soon I'm going to submit a like with a headline and description that includes all the words: Apple, CSS, Microsoft security hole, and ipod. I'll bet you anything that is shoots straight to the top."

blog - Massamune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The website for PC owners to learn all there is to know about tweaking is http://www.speedguide.net. They wrote the TCP optimizer, they give reg tweak strings. That's the place to go if you want to tweak.
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Windows users can just use TCP/IP Optimizer.
Google it. - Twenty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+digg not only for the story but for all the insightful comments.
- FunkyChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gosh darnit. You need to be running Tiger in order to use it. My PowerBook G$ is still running Panther. Yeah,I know, I should have upgraded already.

Then they take a task like finding a file on your computer and make it a pain in the ass. - withinavoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think what Apple means is a normal broadband connected computer where you have a high speed connection but a few first hops to get you on the Internet. So they term that latency which may be 50ms+ to Internet servers. But I think if you have a home LAN (xbox, firewall, etc) where it is
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@zinza: "Huh ? What is so complex in opening up sysctl.conf on text editor and modifying it manually?"
Erm, you opened the which? Changed what? I didn't even know that these settings existed until I read this story. (15 years Mac experience, too.)
Thanks Apple for explaining what the installer does in pretty clear language. Still, I don't agree with you that 5Mbps is "very high speed". - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Broadband Optimizer (http://www.enigmarelle.com/broadbandoptimizer.py) does the same thing, but it makes the windows smaller than Apple's tuner. By default the send and receive sizes are way small.

++digg - nfotxn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People, latency is not bandwidth. If you have DSL or cable it's most likely your latency is pretty good and you don't require this patch. This is for stuff like wireless broadband (not WiFi) and satellite broadband connections that offer high bandwidth (good) and high latency (bad).
- FunkyChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Chicken nuggets? Who said anything about Chicken Nuggets?? That's NOT Funny!!
- grampajoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look up the word "latency" sometime.
- antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he TCP/IP stack in 2000/XP automatically adjusts the setting, not sure but why doesn't the OSX also auto-adjust this based on latency too?
- metalfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice but i wish something like this comes out for linux or windows
- whammypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Makes me wish I had something Apple even more....
- dmcgaugh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it would appear that they have some terminology mixed up the way I read it, i.e. latency is not measured in bps as they allude...
- Osirisofdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
If you want to tweak it by hand:
edit the file /etc/sysctl.conf
net.inet.tcp.sendspace=131072
net.inet.tcp.recvspace=358400
kern.ipc.maxsockbuf=512000
I do not know why they need a program to do this
ya seriously, i've been doing this by hand since undergroundmac did a little article on it ages ago. - _Simplistic_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent. My new iBook arrived today. I love Apple.
- zforrester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does rogers high speed count?

- antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@shadfc check out http://dsd.lbl.gov/TCP-tuning/TCP-tuning.html may help.
- triphop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uh... All it does is mess with a number of parameters that you can change with a text editor? Not very interesting - what would be useful is something that watches what network traffic you generate and then makes the specific changes for you. This is just some GUI on a simple edit - I am pretty sure that most people here can do this and avoid the UNNECESSARY download.
- zionKing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0++digg... two of my very best decisions was picking up chess and picking up a mac. apple definitely has love for its users. and users give the love back. what a concept :)
- JeffreyLebowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a bit confused. Where can I find this app on my HD after downloading and installing???
- Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It simply runs a few terminal commands Jeff, there is no application that is installed.
- Nick_Circosta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We have a 24Mbps Line down here in aus and i dont seem to see much difference with this tunar, Meh still be good for when i travel and on other ppls bband

Good news, this increased my ping on my favorite wolfenstein server from ~40 to ~30, so it does actually do some good.

- orabox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everyone, please do your homework before doing anything to your computer (MAC, Linux or PC).
This thread gives enough clues for you to make an educated decision. Adjusting you TCP buffers is a bit complex and can have varied results. Be prepared to roll back your changes if they impact you and understand that internet speed tests are not definitive as far as performance is concerned.

http://dsd.lbl.gov/TCP-tuning/TCP-tuning.html - moley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my download speed stayed the same - around 4500 kbps. my upload speed almost doubled to around 360 kbps.
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow. My speed actually went down when I had this installed.
I'll try it again around 2am when my internet resumes it's normal speed. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait to get my macintel in January lol
- mcbesq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this wasn't in the release version... WHY?! another apple "MS-hap" disguised as brilliance. No digg for you.
- ZinZa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@flashman; "Erm, you opened the which? Changed what? I didn't even know that these settings existed until I read this story. (15 years Mac experience, too.)"
Well, I think that the sysctl.conf file behaves the same way in os x as it does on BSD, which osx is based on.. So mac experience would not have helped you there, I agree :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rofl what next? "Apple announces new superapp to delete items from trash can"
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap. I didn't quite make it. 4.5 mbps. :(
- jicon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why didn't they release something like this for OS9 back in 1998??? The TCP stack was never optimized properly for broadband from day one, and Windows/Linux systems would download at much greater speeds.
OSX improved things, but packet adjustment programs have been around for a good 7-8 years. My advise is if you are happy with your speeds, DON'T install this patch, unless you can reverse the settings. As mentioned above, online games, etc may be affected. latency may indeed balloon depending on your connection.
/Refusing to give Apple a pat on the back for making this available. - aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those who don't know mbps natively:
5mbps/sec is 640kilobytes/sec. - doxtorray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0More details at this SlashMac forum...

Evidently, there is some disagreement as to whether this helps DSL and Cable broadband. - forman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Time for a refresher course on units. According to NIST standards you should have a space between the number and unit. The engineering prefix for 1000 is "k" and the engineering prefix for 1000000 is "M" (capital "M"). Bits are written with a lower case "b" and bytes are written with an uppercase "B". When writing bits per second it is acceptable to write either "bps" or "b/s". I prefer the latter.
Thus, one would write 5 Mb/s which is equal to 5000 kb/s. -
