- Azerael, on 03/07/2009, -6/+63I like them both, but I buried you for being a douche.
- TheAbsintheHare, on 03/07/2009, -1/+33...It's really not that complicated.
10.5.7
It's the 10th iteration of the operating system
The 5th major update
The 7th minor update.
How else would you like them to name the versions? O.o - Zippo, on 03/07/2009, -1/+32Installed through proper use of a Falcon Punch.
- TheAbsintheHare, on 03/07/2009, -3/+31Major releases are code named after cats
Minor releases are code named after cities - lolmax, on 03/07/2009, -2/+27digg and apple have one of the most disturbing relationships ive ever seen.
so loving....yet so painful. - llsethj, on 03/07/2009, -2/+25"AppleInsider has also picked up hints that the 10.5.7 "point" release is internally referenced in some circles as "Juno" or project Juno. The precise significance of this code-name is unknown, though cursory checks suggests that OS X 10.5 Leopard point releases may be following naming conventions tied to Roman goddesses or the names of asteroids."
- wontstoptalking, on 03/07/2009, -1/+22I didn't know Apple had it in them.
- 007isbond1, on 03/07/2009, -1/+17if i could bury your comment twice, i would
- nrox653, on 03/07/2009, -4/+19How longer will it be till Apple finally ditches OS X and goes with OS 11?
- mstrebe, on 03/07/2009, -1/+13It's named after *my* cat, Juno.
- immatellyouwhat, on 03/07/2009, -0/+11You mean XI ?
- jwmann, on 03/08/2009, -0/+11Now all they need is
Mac OS X: Teen pregnancy : Home Basic
Mac OS X: Teen pregnancy : Home Premium
Mac OS X: Teen pregnancy : Business
Mac OS X: Teen pregnancy : Ultimate - slashdotordigg, on 03/07/2009, -5/+14Mac OS X Juno's new features:
- built in pregnancy test: iKnockedUp.
- No storyline included
- Comes with 100 disney's family movies with DRM(expires within 24 hours)
- add feature: tic tac dispenser for additional $299. - Raoulduke310, on 03/07/2009, -1/+9Actually the city is spelled Juneau..."juno" is the wife of the Roman God Jupiter...didn't you see the movie?
- Ainsleh, on 03/07/2009, -3/+10OS 11 doesn't sound cool enough for Apple.
- pacman122, on 03/07/2009, -0/+7Troll patrol out in full force
- MtheoryX, on 03/07/2009, -3/+10It's a point release to correct previous software flaws, not the second coming of christ.
I swear, some of you really go out of your way to make all Mac users sound like complete idiots. - dcipjr, on 03/07/2009, -0/+6Well, as far as I know, Apple hasn't used a major OS version greater than x.6. They moved to OS 8 after 7.6.1, OS 9 after 8.6, and OS X after 9.2.2. It's possible 10.6 is the last iteration of OS X -- although I doubt it. The move to OS X was a complete overhaul of the OS, while OS 7 -> 8 -> 9 were just feature enhancements and relatively minor tweaks.
I would say Apple will ditch the OS X moniker when they have a completely different, next-generation OS ready. I'd bet that OS X will be the last generation of the Mac OS with the conventional desktop metaphor -- that metaphor has pretty much run its course.
It's hard to say what the next generation of the Mac OS will look like, though I'd look to the iPhone's OS for ideas. - SeraphX, on 03/07/2009, -0/+6A baby?
- dullnation, on 03/07/2009, -0/+6Its just a ***** number! The features ARE what matter, not the name of the OS
- wentwj, on 03/07/2009, -0/+5it's a point release. The minor releases (10.x) get kitty names, whereas the 10.5.x apprently get Roman Goddess, though the public almost never hears these names.
- Vizin, on 03/07/2009, -0/+5Can't tell if you're kidding, but that's not how version numbers work.
- repruhsent, on 03/07/2009, -1/+6http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/
- MorpheousMarty, on 03/07/2009, -0/+4I'm guessing it will be when they start from scratch. The OS X logo has that sexy look that makes good marketing, and although through minor evolutionary changes the current OS X is very different than the original OS X, it is still the same at it's core. An analogy my be that OS X is like nightclub. Remodeling keeps it fresh and up to date with the demands of it's users, but until they rebuild the whole place they aren't going to change the name.
- waydee, on 03/07/2009, -7/+10I'll do one better, I only use vista and I buried him for being a douche.
- aserer511, on 03/08/2009, -0/+3OS X.X....
- AngelBunny, on 03/07/2009, -0/+3almost everything listed above is an option in the operating system or not an issue to begin with.
when windows lacks features so separate programs are made to add those features and then windows is advertised as an operating system with tons of programs because of it. if OSX lacks a feature it is a problem regardless if you can download a program to add that feature. both the same thing yet one is looked at as a positive while the other is looked at as a negative. hypocrite - linkmandx, on 03/08/2009, -2/+5Need a dispenser here!
- DustinHill, on 03/07/2009, -4/+7They do. People just don't ***** their pants every time it happens because it happens almost every Tuesday without fail. I'm not a fanboy (I prefer Linux), but I see patches every almost Every Tuesday on my Vista rig.
- oneoverzero, on 03/07/2009, -1/+4The mouse acceleration is much better in mac then in windows, imho.
- MtheoryX, on 03/07/2009, -0/+3@iDiggr: I'm not a windows user, dumbass.
If you had any ounce of intelligence, you'd notice that's a god damned Apple hat straight from Cupertino in my profile pic.
I've been developing for the Mac for 3 years now, and while I use their products, I'm the first to point out when a) Apple ***** up, and b) retarded Mac users that make the rest of us look bad.
And speaking of people getting pissy for pointing out flaws, See: your comments. - DemiRonin, on 03/07/2009, -0/+3Until it runs out of big cats
- JonForTheWin, on 03/07/2009, -4/+6You're all *****. GNU/Linux forever.
- jzh1554, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Probably not, considering after OS X 10.9 will be 10.10, unless they happen to decide to go to 11 then. Yes, I know 10.1 and 10.10 are mathematically the same number, but in software they are not.
- TVarmy, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2I wonder if they have codenames other than just plain 10.5.x for these updates (which are something less than a service pack but greater than a patch). The fact that 10.5.7 has been speculated about for so long and is getting so much attention leads me to think there might actually be something interesting in store, as it's unnatural for this much hype to build up over something so predictable. If there's a code name for this one but not the others, all the more reason to be curious.
Still, I'm just expecting performance/stability tweaks and updated drivers... - yoursh, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2Please let it fix photo library sync for portable home directories in 10.5 server. Getting sick of it syncing 15GB of photos on every logout.
- AngelBunny, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2i can't imagine more than 10.8
apple is looking into the 3d monitor field (the ones that don't give people migraines or require people to wear glasses) but the problem with the tech currently is you have to be sitting at a perfect angle or it will not work. if the tech keeps improving at the rate that it is maybe in 3-5 years apple will release a full 100% 3d operating system were everything pops out via a 3d monitor. however, such a change would probably move the operating system past OSX to OSXI or something like that. - stickypenguin, on 03/07/2009, -2/+4what happened to the large kitties? :(
- fury420, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2wait, your bragging about the multiple monitor support on windows?
have you ever actually used it?
its all left up to the graphics card provider, which may or may not provide decent/reliable options
ive got a nvidia 9800GT with latest drivers, and the option to select Dualview/extended desktop mode disappears about 50% of the time i startup
its a crapshoot really, do i get to have extended desktop without restarting repeatedly today? or do i need to restart several times and pray? - roxgod666, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2"Just when Windows catches up with Mac OS they go and do this"
Do what, make an update? You do realize that both Vista service pack 2 and Windows 7 release candidate will be coming out in a couple of months. Windows doesn't copy Apple, Windows copies Linux just as Apple copies Linux.
What are you even trying to prove anyway? Apple copied Microsoft with iWork, but you don't see anyone bitching about that. Some of you mac users are supporting Apple like it's life or death.
And thanks to MtheoryX for being reasonable. - inactive, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1"important lee" or importantly
- ShrimpCrackers, on 03/08/2009, -0/+13D monitors are cool and all... except I used to have one. They don't work unless they can somehow track your eyes, and at then it'll only work with 1 person at a time. You're right, very VERY limited field of view. Currently you have to position your head just right, move it 2 inches left or right, up or down, and you're screwed.
- runeasgar, on 03/07/2009, -0/+1I doubt Apple will ditch OS X.. the 10.# is their new iteration.
- loveageek, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1OS X.X.X ;)
- TVarmy, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1I agree. That could be a very long time, though. Unix (or BSD, if you want to be more specific) has proven to be very modular and futureproof, considering the first versions of Unix were programmed in the '70s to run phone call routing hardware.
- Iggins, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1"Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?" --Nigel Tufnel
- AngelBunny, on 03/07/2009, -1/+2yes they do. it is called an SP update. all other windows updates are security 'patches'. SP actually bug fixes the operating system.
- TVarmy, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1That's an issue, but refresh rate is also a problem, as it's effectively half the refresh rate of what the screen would normally have. Below 60, it can induce nausea and discomfort. 120 hz screens can do it somewhat well (you can use it for 30 minutes before feeling sick), but it'll need to go higher to be comfortable.
