- jhub908, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27People still buy these? Has anyone actually seen a U2 ipod "in the wild"? I know I haven't.
- computerdude33, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17To echo other's statements, why not special edition iPods for other bands? That would be awesome.
- jd72277, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Too bad the U2 iPod isn't a Limited Edition... I would have loved to see it go away by now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Because $50 of every u2 ipod purchase passes through the hands of 5 bueracracies before reaching the starving children of Africa. For each of these U2 iPods sold, Bono will personally deliver 25 cents worth of grain to a child in need. It would have been more, but he keeps forgetting his hat, and needs it flown first class all over the world.
- happyfundave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Tool would have to be added to the itunes music store first.
- brycelarren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12You "love to ipod"?
Also, nice spam jackass! - Dochtuir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Isn't it becuase U2 helped advertise the iPod by appearing in commercials and Posters. I believe they also did it for free, too.
- quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9People used to buy them because they were black -- back when all ipods were white. Now they make black ipods and fewer people buy them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Haha, Apple doing philanthropic decisions?
Bono is a personal friend of Steve Jobs. They could do special versions for hundred bands, but it wouldn't be anything special then. Having just one special edition makes it really special. - Shempster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Apple never included U2's music collection on the U2 iPod. Originally, they included a $50 off coupon for the U2 iTunes Box set, but the iPods never came loaded with music.
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The iPod doesn't suck, you do.
- wphj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've seen one, and it was the old 4G one.
Although, I would think about getting one (and I think others would too) if they took off the stupid signatures. I'd pay a few bucks for a different color, but I'm not a huge U2 fan. - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I've always been curious as to why U2 was featured for the Special Edition iPod. Was this arrangement due to U2 or Apple? And if it's Apple, then why U2?
Overall, it has always seemed weird, a form of blatant yet pointless commercialism and branding for U2. - poetofzwan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7What about an Apple Beatles Special Edition Ipod lol!
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Because other bands don't have U2's lead man Bono? I'm figuring his philanthropic attitude weighed quite a bit on Jobs decision to sell the U2 SE iPod.
- zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It it wasn't U2 then I'm sure Gene Simmons would have.. He's a commercialism whore and freely admits to it ;)
- iobuffa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What is with the "Apple quietly.." precursor to everything Apple does without a media event? If it was done quietly, how did you find out? bah.
- converge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dream Theater iPod...nice.
- careyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3all the other bands you guys mention may be good, but in terms of widespread appeal and influence none of them are close to being in the same league as U2. Save the fanboy attitude, look at the numbers, it's a business decision. U2 is up there with maybe the Stones and the Beatles in sales and notoriety and it's a pretty lonely precipice at these levels. Certainly, today, of those 3, U2 has the most marketable impact, being still 'current' and quite active and influential. It's business, not fandom.
- lerinlas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think a KISS IPod Would be Freaking awesome. A Black IPod with a silver click wheel...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3h0tKarl: Different Apple. The Beatles created the Apple label which had nothign to do with Apple Computers. Matter of fact just this year there was a lawsuit settled between the two Apples.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5As a Tool fan, I think I'd feel betrayed if they ever resorted to branding a consumer product (besides music cds of course).
- wush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They're ashamed of it because it's so ugly. Thats why they kept quiet.
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Fan of the iPod. Fan of U2. But that thing is butt crack ugly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3That's what I was thinking. Isn't this a piece of crap they can't give away?
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10 A Tool iPod would be awesome! It could be covered in the weird holographic plastic on a couple of their albums... I'd buy one!
- u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3to my knowledge no money from these units goes to any charity. If you can find proof that it does, please provide a link.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, that was the joke, but apparently it's over the head of most U2 fans.
- Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bring on the DEICIDE iPod. SATAN!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A slayPod would be the ultimate weapon to fend off droves of dirty hippies.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Shempster
my bad then. I misread the older reviews as it including a coupon for the albums, but I guess they sold for a lot more on itunes and the coupon only got you so many. - lib319, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2how about a Pod iPod. Ideal. (I mean iDeal)
its all very confusing - rizwan82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice , keep it up,
- jizzmaster0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3U2 sucks. They should take all the U2 iPods in their inventory, sand off all the stupid signatures, put a pentagram on the click-wheel and rebrand it as a Slayer iPod!
A Black Sabbath iPod in all black with a gold cross on the click-wheel would be awesome too. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really? Well... because Apple mentioned the updates to the *entire* iPod line in its announcement, *excluding* the U2 iPod. Given that iPod was the sole exception, I think "quietly" is an apt assessment of the situation.
- hesiod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2DimePod.
- imsoclever, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Yeah a Tool iPod would be great for identifying people with ***** taste in music.
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Because, even though you may not think anything of U2, they are one of the most well-known bands in the entire world, they still pack every arena they visit in every city in the world, and their music spans 30 years. They are the quintessential rock band. If you could just sell a U2 iPod to every other U2 fan, you'd be doing quite well.
- HRH.King.Lerxst, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2A Rush iPod would be nice, they could print "starman" logo in the clickwheel. The back could be engraved with that subdivisions map from the back of Signals.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+20Actually, U2 is just a ***** band. It's a perfect band to brand an iPod after.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Good! I love the iPod, but not sure why I'd want a U2-flavored one.
- skoles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Because a certain amount from every U2 iPod goes towards Bono's charity (AIDS I think, hence the red dial).
Besides, this is non-news. It would only make sense for Apple to update the U2 iPod since the only difference is the red dial on it. I don't think they include the entire discography anymore. - odaen, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6I don't think that tool would be special edition iPod material.
Now Red Hot Chili Peppers on the other hand would. Everyone knows who they are and both the younger audience and the older audience love them. - Markabre, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Seeing how pro-apple Trent Reznor has been for years (and product placement in a recent video) How about a NIN ipod for the "alternative" crowd?
It could sport metal casing or a more rugged look and perhaps a function to store morbidly depressing poetry about how god hates you.
Don't get me wrong u2 certainly were a good band (joshua tree) and have the occasional return to genius but surely the special u2 ipod would be more special if it truly was limited edition and wasn't upgraded with the rest of the line every time. It would also make people more likely to quickly snap up future special editions if they were any good in the future.
The colour scheme for the u2 ipod is from the "..atomic bomb" album which has now been out too long now to be relevent.
HRM Steve Jobs may be a huge u2 fan but it's time to move on, aren't apple meant to innovate? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Didn't Apple originally sign the Beatles? That would be perfect.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -34/+22U2 is a ***** band to design an iPod for.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3Dir en grey iPod ftw.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -23/+7U2 sucks. The ipod sucks.
A match made in heaven.
