- AndreMA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not really news, as it was known that Rosetta wouldn't run the Classic environment...
- Zorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Finally.
- robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0THANK THE LORD ALMIGHTY!!!!!
Smite that little Mac, God-- SMITE HIM!!! - frouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to know, I was speculating this to colleagues yesterday.
- Whosawhatsis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What did you expect? It was already a pain to use when the PPC processor that it required didn't have to be emulated. Who is still using classic anyway? I haven't had it installed since 10.1.
Now being able to run windows in a similar fashion, /that/ would be useful... torturous, but useful. - scblock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Uh, quietly? It was pretty widely known. John Gruber once again proves he is a dumbass. Also, for the record, let OS9 die already. Seriously.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was not done quietly, it's been plastered all over the place.
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhh, scblock, why don't you look at the date of that newspost? Same to you, submitter. This is old news.
- reidypeidy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NOOOOO! now I can't play Alice anymore!!!!
- spazzium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't a surprise. :)
- defjuan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0apple made this clear a while ago
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Although there are no plans to support Classic, that article is wrong in that code written for the G4 taking advantage of AltiVec will run in Rosetta as of a few revisions ago.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good Riddance.
- linz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a 6 months known fact since it was made public at WWDC'05. Old news.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great. Now how will I play Power Pete?
- chrismcelligott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, June 05... your quick
- Sophistifunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old old old news, and I'm pretty sure rosetta has been updated for some altivec emulation since then.
- Freezecool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YAY! Yeeeeessss! more room on my comp, no more classic! yipeee!
- kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0everyone knew and no one cared
- zoltan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0the only os i had was 7, and if they had support for that maybe id go back to apple..ha
- hardran3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old. lame. no digg
- The_Decryptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Quietly"?
It's been know they weren't going to update classic to work on the Intel Mac's since Apple announced the transition. - ebescan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What's wrong with supporting as many OS systems as possible. Abandoning an older version of an OS is just taking away possibilities instead of making more. On the other hand, I do agree that OS 9 is becoming very outdated and can't compare to Tiger or whatever else will be produced within the next year and a half.
- samsoffes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0who cares. no one uses the os except people who live in the past. i know now some guy is gonna be like 'but i need this one app in classic and..." then learn how to code it and do it yourself or stop complaining. versiontracker.com im sure youll find something
- sandrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please! Anyone still using Classic probably is not interested on the new machines. Its like someone bitching because the new PCs don't support Windows 98. Who cares?
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1os9 is fine for those who still want to use it. if they feel they aren't missing anything, they should be fine -- they don't need constant updates etc to keep their mac running.
once they feel the need for something newer they will have to upgrade and deal with the changes that come with it, but this isn't the big deal some people are trying to make it. - AaronD12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I can say is "DUH!". Classic ran through an emulation environment native to the PowerPC. The new IntelMacs would have to run the Classic emulator through the Rosetta emulator and it would be slow as s--t. Seriously, after 4 years, does anyone still use Classic apps? After the first year of OS X being released, I have never used a Classic app since.
- aKae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG?!?! BUT HOW WILL I EVER PLAY ESCAPE VELOCITY!!!?!?!!?!
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As soon as OS X was released I never ran classic. Sometimes I'd click on something and Classic would start and I was like "STOP STOP STOP" trying to make it stop loading. Not missin' it at all. It was good while it was out, but OS X is like light years away from Classic.
- beggersfunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg...Classic is Dead we all knew that!
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, the G5's didn't support Classic either.
They must have done it more quietly than previously believed. - enderu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, this wasn't really "quietly." Everyone knew, or everyone who did even a little reading knew Rosetta wouldn't support OS 9. It's about damn time, too.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Monday, 6 June 2005"
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD
...and a Blog post...
NO DIGG - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are enough great emulators to get your Classic Mac game on like Basilisk II or SheepShaver.
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really want to see someone bitch about this. I refuse to let Classic run on my iBook G4. As for old Mac Apps? I use vMac and System 1. LOL.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Haha. My school needs to upgrade to these so they can't use the old learning programs they have now. :P
- snooo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this really news? Didn't we all know this when Rosetta was announced?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_%28software%29 - signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OS 9 is officially out of support isn't it?
Ever since I started using OSX 3 years ago, I've always wiped the drive and reinstalled without the classic environment. If a software publisher is too lazy to update their software to run on OSX natively, I don't want to use it. OS 9 and below is the reason I hated macs before OSX came out. - cosmicrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anything can be emulated. I'm sure a 3rd party will make a Mac OS 9 emulator for the intel boxen before the end of the year. I'd be shocked if it didn't happen.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good, I am finally glad they decided to end support for this dead crap.
- timbtwisted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who cares, I haven't used the Mac classic environment since I was in highschool more then 6 years ago. Few programs require that environment today, and the only ones I've seen are highly specialized programs written for businesses to work with even older machinery.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if Mac-on-Mac will make it to OSX86? It is my preferred method of running pre OSX software.
http://www.maconmac.bastix.net/ - cmurtaugh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um... how could they end something that they never started? Classic was never supported on Intel...
- .mark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is old news, but I'm so thankful for anything having to do with classic support ending that I'll gladly digg this...
- DephexTwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You wiped the drive so you could reinstall without Classic? Why didn't you just drag "System Folder" and "Applications (Mac OS 9)" to the trash?
- scblock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eridius: good point. I didn't do my part.
- SpitRespectable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Behold, the weakness of Digg
This is an old story, the commenters recognize that this is not news, and yet it's on the front page of Digg?
How would Google fix it if it was theirs? - Geterix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One of the things that makes Windows such a value is that I can still run apps that are useful from years ago. It gives the PC users millions of programs at there disposal. It also allows low income PC users to have access to useful programs rather than having to go buy the "latest and greatest" just because the OS makers just don't care for that old stuff anymore.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good riddance, but very bad news for me. I hadn't been aware that G5s didn't support Classic. Would explain why the company I work for won't supply us with G5s just yet, though; for a variety of reasons (none of them good IMO) they're connected at the hip with legacy apps...and some of them won't even work in Classic Mode. D'oh!
- rouben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think killing off Rosetta was a good move. Now Apple can focus on fixing all the bugs in their OS X code, like the printing subsystem memory leaks and the "sticky" dock.
