- clockdist, on 01/22/2009, -13/+51It's about time... those were stupid ideas.
A smaller iPhone would go against one of the main reasons iPhone is superior: screen size.
A netbook would go against the MacBook Air...which has the size advantage of a netbook and the power advantage of a notebook. - darienphoenix, on 01/23/2009, -5/+37"A netbook would go against the MacBook Air...which has the size advantage of a netbook"
No, no it doesn't.
I can't stick a laptop with a 13" footprint into a small bag. I'll take an 8" with more ports any day of the week, thanks. - inactive, on 01/22/2009, -11/+41If the iphone had external keyboard capabilities it would be as good as a netbook...
- Vegabondsx, on 01/23/2009, -0/+20I wouldn't say it'd jeopardize laptop sales by any means. I don't see photoshop, final cut, or word being used extensively on an iphone. Also, keep in mind the iPhone OS isn't open as far as free development, everything still haves to go through Apple's approval.
- conebone69, on 03/02/2009, -6/+25iphone nano? that is a terrible idea. a TERRIBLE idea.
- cowsgonemadd3, on 01/23/2009, -7/+23No, it would not.
- sfrench, on 01/23/2009, -2/+16Going by Apple's track record... that means both of these will be available for purchase in the next 12-18 months.
- beeblebrox, on 01/23/2009, -1/+14Because Apple would never, ever say they're not going to release something and then turn around and do it anyway. **cough**video ipod**cough. Their word is their bond.
- tetsuo29, on 01/23/2009, -0/+13Whatever. They swore up and down that they weren't going to make a video iPod right up until the day that they released a video iPod. If the netbook phenomenon continues long enough, we'll see an Apple branded netbook.
- omarciddo, on 01/23/2009, -7/+19"We don't know how to build a sub-$500 computer that is not a piece of junk."
So the Mac Mini must've been a piece of ***** in your own eyes, huh? - t3hbagel, on 01/23/2009, -2/+12I rolled my eyes at the sheer arrogance of Jobs when I read this statement.
- akeldama, on 01/23/2009, -3/+11Cut and paste!
- Julie188, on 01/22/2009, -5/+13Apple refuses to cheapen itself -- could you see it coming?
- pika2000, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7The iPhone nano doesn't make sense in the first place. The only thing Apple might do is make a cheaper model (4GB, no GPS, etc) with the same form factor. Anything smaller will severely affect the usability.
As for a Macnetbook, I bet Apple is looking how the Sony Vaio P, a great example of a premium (overpriced) netbook, will do. If they see that it is selling well, they might jump into the market once there are faster processor and cheaper SSD, and then do another comparison with the Vaio P ala the Macbook Air vs Vaio TZ. I can see Apple using a faster atom with nVidia chipset, SSD standard, and price it a bit cheaper than the P (optional: another "fit into an envelope" demo).
To be honest, enough of these. Bring out the new mini already! - luckless, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7Yeah.... unlike expensive hookers popular whores tend to have more viruses.... just sayin'
Why not get an ugly chick who'll be glad that you're paying attention to her, spend the time learning to be a plastic surgeon and fix her up yourself. She'll never cheat on you, never get any viruses from someone else, and always be ready to do what you want... I'm talking about gentoo of course. - phoomp, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7People who want netbooks *don't want the power advantage of a notebook*. They want the *price advantage* of a computer that can do only what most people usually use their computers for: surfing the web and light word processing.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 01/23/2009, -0/+7While I am a great Apple fan, I cringed when I read this line.
It's sad, because frankly, my 400 Euro (ca 500 USD) Aus Eee PC is an excellent sidekick for my main machine, a MacBook Pro. Whenever I just need a web browser, a word processor and a media player, I leave the $2000 Mac at home and put the Asus in my backpack. It is light, has a 160 GB HD, a great keyboard, Bluetooth, WLAN, an SD card slot for my camera, and - bonus - it typically runs for more than 6 hours before the batteries die, while the MacBook Pro will not even do *half* of that.
It's sad when America's most innovative computer manufacturer cannot beat Asus.
But then, I think what Jobs meant to say was: "We don't know how to build a sub-$500 computer with a 50% proft margin for us that is not a piece of junk." - SPThom, on 01/23/2009, -1/+7However, the MacBook Air is in a completely different market niche from a netbook (if not from any other notebook). Part of the appeal of a netbook is the low cost.
I'd still like to see an Apple netbook, personally... But it seems like Apple's low-end offers (Mac Mini, Apple TV) don't perform as well, so I can't blame them for shying away. - flyingclutchman, on 01/23/2009, -8/+14yeah maybe they will add mms
- Burninate35, on 01/23/2009, -0/+6@ OMGtheEnd
Your computer services you? DAMN!!!!!! I want that computer. - dext3r, on 01/23/2009, -1/+7"The simple fact that a person is buying a mac shows that they do not understand computers..."
Flamebait much? - justinp, on 01/23/2009, -0/+6And the cost advantage of... um...
- mattsull, on 01/23/2009, -4/+10They still dont know how to build a sub-2000 dollar laptop that isnt a peice of junk for the price
- Ressah, on 01/23/2009, -3/+8i wish my hands and eyes were as bad as yours insidius then i could justify lugging around a 2kg machine in a large bag too.
- PrometheusBorn, on 01/23/2009, -0/+5I guess if you want to interpret 'sub $500' as $499, you all make great points.
- OMGtheEnd, on 01/23/2009, -1/+6What a huge oversight. Netbook does not necessarily mean degraded and cheap. For most mobile users, netbook means sub notebook size with features for extended on the road use. Mine is certainly capable to perform at par with most full size laptops. I think there are a lot of netbook users that wouldn't mind paying the price of admission for a netbook of Apple quality.
- Aitese, on 01/23/2009, -2/+6It seems these two topics will find Apple fans falling over themselves to contradict each other. They claim they don't NEED a netbook because their iPhone will do everything that's needed...then say they don't WANT a netbook because the screens are too small to get anything done. They say they need a full sized keyboard to do any kind of computing...then jump back to "I can do EVERYTHING on my iPhone" arguments.
If an 8.9-10 inch screen is not big enough, then why, if it's an Apple, is a 4 inch screen big enough? Either you need a full sized keyboard or you don't...but an iPhone doesn't pack one of those so make up your mind. - branndon, on 01/23/2009, -4/+8They should develop a netbook for the hard core mac lovers who will pay $500-700 for a tiny laptop with the OS they know and love. I am not a mac fanboy, but can see how there is a market for it. Right now all the mac users who want a netbook are forced to spend money with other companies or wait in hopes that apple comes out with one.
- flyingclutchman, on 01/23/2009, -6/+10more ports + more battery life + cheaper + everything mac users do any ways can be done on a netbook
- phoomp, on 01/23/2009, -2/+6Why must we always wait and wait for Apple to bless our devices with basic functionality?
- Murdats, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3@insidius
and buy a real laptops with ports. - OMGtheEnd, on 01/23/2009, -1/+4Mine is certainly usable keyboard and monitor. It services me for work. If anything, netbook owners pretty much just use it for productivity (email, documents, presentations, browse). What else can you use it for? screen and processor is too small for gaming.
I agree.. some of the netbooks out there are too small. The MSI is just the right size.... saying they are all too small is a general statement. - tofslie, on 01/23/2009, -3/+6Just because they say they won't enter the NETBOOK market, does not mean they won't build something entirely new and create a new market. (Tablet Book of the FUTURE)
- Murdats, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3then again it doesn't mean they will do that either.
- severinsen, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3I seem to remember this guy telling the world what Apple would not be making a video iPod...
- omarciddo, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3If Apple's going to make a statement like that, they better not give anyone any room for interpretation lest their foot gets shoved in their own mouth.
- moppsy, on 01/24/2009, -2/+5The Mac Mini is $599.
Last time I checked, 500 < 599.
But I guess math is different these days. - MacEnvy, on 01/23/2009, -1/+3Why waste your (horribly overpriced) texting quota when you have a full e-mail client if you want to send media? I don't understand the benefit of MMS on a smartphone.
- blankoboy, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Ok but what about the Mac Mini. I am beyond extremely tired of waiting for it to be announced. I have had cash in hand for the last 6 months to buy two of them. Two new PC's with EFI-X is looking very tempting about now. Hurry the ***** up apple.
- nesagwa, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2It hasnt seen an update in years, Im not sure he remembers they make the thing.
- inactive, on 01/23/2009, -1/+3That's just bs, we need more options.
- the.cloned, on 01/23/2009, -1/+3"why have a $400 netbook when we can sell our mp3 players for that much"
- flyingclutchman, on 01/24/2009, -0/+2most people that will care about mms will have unlimted txts
- MattBD, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2I've done Python coding on a netbook, and used IRC.
- noreturn, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2When, and I say this as an Apple fanboy, has Apple ever made anything cheaper and more powerful than the competition? Their MO is to sell sexy at a premium.
- WafflePirate, on 01/23/2009, -3/+5Pheww, good news. An Apple netbook or iPhone Nano would suck more than squid tentacles stuck to Michael Jackson's armpit, arr.
- OrangeTide, on 01/23/2009, -2/+4This is how the internet works now.
- chrish, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Ah crap! Not another person who totally misread and/or took out of context Tim Cook's quote. Read the question he was asked (about mass produced cheap phones selling in countries like India) and then you'll know it's not about the iPhone nano.
The iPhone nano is nothing like the "low end voice phones" he was talking about. His quote in no way whatsoever denounces an iPhone nano.
Look at any iPhone nano rumor. Not a single one has ever suggested it would be a "low-end voice phone". Every single rumor (and every one I've heard asking for an iPhone nano) is of an iPhone thats a bit smaller and with a few less features, but an iPHONE NANO WOULD STILL BE A SMARTPHONE not a "low-end voice phone".
So please stop spreading this BS. - fugazied, on 01/23/2009, -1/+3Just needs better interoperability with bluetooth and a way to interface with external screens. eg. ideal world, lay your iphone on a table and plug the output into your 40" TV, use a bluetooth keyboard abnd mouse to navigate the iphone (now on the 40" screen) so you can watch movies, check email, use itunes, use iphone apps etc etc.
- Dlipford360, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2it was under $499, so probably like $498.99 gosh. lol
