- user500, on 10/25/2009, -18/+174I only have $998 to spend in my budget so I guess I'm A PC
- BlackJackJester, on 10/25/2009, -14/+140Apple is a 'premium' brand. If they sold lower cost laptops, they risk losing some image. Gucci doesn't sell ***** at Target, and Apple isn't going to sell an inexpensive laptop.
- Corona85, on 10/25/2009, -43/+152Still way too much. My Toshiba laptop cost me $700 and is on par with their more expensive laptops. Throw Windows 7 in and i have no reason to own a Mac now.
- jpdbaugh, on 10/25/2009, -33/+95I do agree that some of what Apple makes is a bit over priced and that the inability to upgrade hardware is unfortunate, however Apple simply makes the best laptops on the market in my opinion. I have never used a computer, for that matter, that I like better than my 13.3 inch Macbook Pro. Contrary to popular belief too, you can make all of the standard laptop upgrades. I personally have an Intel X-25m, a second Seagate 320 GB HDD in my optical bay slot, and 4 GB of ram. Yes I will admit that the base cost of my MBP was probably a bit more than I could have payed for a dell or something. Maybe I drank the kool aid but the aluminum unibody MBP just feels like a quality product. It has a lot of the intangibles that other laptops lack. It just steams of quality. I love this computer and it was worth every penny. IT is what I do and I do not mind paying more for better quality.
- Corona85, on 10/25/2009, -14/+75I actually paid $30 for Windows 7 with my student discount, dick head. :) In YOUR face.
- rolf, on 10/25/2009, -2/+53FTFA: "By not coughing up a low-cost MacBook, as some had expected, Apple has ceded a potentially huge market to PC makers."
Apple isn't about marketshare but about margins. This is Steve Job's mantra inside his company. He doesn't want to be the next dell. I may not necessarily agree with it, some probably want to see Apple go the Microsoft route as well (license out OS X), but it's the way Apple operates right now. - Red989, on 10/25/2009, -6/+48I got Windows 7 for free from my CS department at school. Does Apple do that?
- seantubridy, on 10/25/2009, -1/+42Old and tired Mac vs. PC argument is old and tired.
- CoreyFC, on 10/25/2009, -4/+42Like it or not... it is a business model that has worked for them for years. They are smart not to change it, even if it means I will not be owning a macbook any time soon.
- inactive, on 10/25/2009, -32/+68Uh... "cannot run most applications"?
1998 called. They want their rhetoric back. - epyon180, on 10/25/2009, -11/+45I'm a hardcore mac user and I have to say that this price point for this laptop is ridiculous, the article mentions competing with $600 laptops but apple doesn't even have to do that. We are not asking for much, even at $800 you could maybe justify the price due to the better quality materials etc. but at $1000 its like apple is just trying to make you feel bad for not picking up a $1200 MacBook pro which is a much better deal. And a $1000 consumer laptop that doesn't have an SD card slot? you have got to be kidding me, I guess Apple thinks that a ***** SD card reader is a pro feature that would just confuse the average user.
Mac "fanboy" check my comments I'm legit : ) - adremali, on 10/25/2009, -3/+36if they bumped this down to 7-800 bucks, it would sell like mad
- Corona85, on 10/25/2009, -8/+40Incase my comment didn't show, i paid $30 for Windows 7 thanks to the student upgrade. So yeah, like i said, in YOUR face. :)
- rnawky, on 10/25/2009, -16/+48OSX runs Windows applications in a VM, Windows can run Mac and Linux in a VM.
Your argument is void. - gerryk, on 10/25/2009, -27/+58Only a fanboy could determine that selling less product is 'marketing genius'.
- 7yler, on 10/25/2009, -18/+47The thing is, it doesn't matter.
Apple knows it only owns 10% of the market
Apple doesn't want to be PC.
They're more interested in making as much as they can off their 10%
If they sold a 500 laptop they'd be the same as everyone else.
They're not the same as everyone else.
They're a mac. - MacHarborGuy, on 10/25/2009, -20/+44the whole "cannot run most apps" things goes both ways.
I cannot run Team Fortress 2 in MacOSX.
I cannot run Coda in Windows.
I cannot run PlayOn Media Server in MacOS X.
I cannot run GarageBand in Windows. - DigitalisAkujin, on 10/25/2009, -18/+42Hackintosh ftw.
- jrm125, on 10/25/2009, -2/+25True, but it also necessitates spending even more money to then purchase the second OS (assuming it's Windows).
- zeth006, on 10/25/2009, -5/+27Mactards. *Sigh*. You can get a family pack (3 licenses) at Costco for $160 give or take $10 depending on when they're feeling generous. Think there was even a deal for $140.
$300....hmmm. That's a tough one! I paid $30 for mine.
That being said, dugg Corona, buried Zephyrninetard. - peestandingup, on 10/25/2009, -5/+27Maybe the dumbest thing said on Digg ever.
- Beatmiser, on 10/25/2009, -9/+31I've started to come to an odd conclusion. Most Mac users are pretty much just happy with their Macs. They enjoy their computing on them and by and large their Macs do what they need. These arguments often start when Windows users mistake their enjoyment for smugness and begin calling them fags or lemmings- etc. Sure you can build a cheaper machine and hey, cool for you if that is what makes you happy, no one is calling you an idiot for that. But also understand that despite Window's users attacks, most Mac users really are just happy and have no intention of being otherwise.
Basically, my enjoyment of my Mac in no way ruins your use of your PC. And anyone who defines themselves by their OS (and I'm including Mac users) is just a a ***** moron. - monkeysama, on 10/25/2009, -5/+27I'm always amazed at how these comparisons put exactly $0 worth of value on the OS experience you need to deal with each and every day. To me that's more important than relative HD size or how much RAM it ships with, but it doesn't fit in a nice table entry so idiots ignore it.
- epyon180, on 10/25/2009, -5/+27confuciussay
Apple gave you so much ammo to work with, so instead of attacking the fact that its doesn't have a replaceable battery, only 2 USB ports, no SD card reader, no dedicated graphics, and crazy price you go with the stupid "cannot run most applications" argument that was invalid even before you could run windows on mac 3 years ago. - CoreyFC, on 10/25/2009, -2/+22Stock holders would probably agree too. 52 week range in this economy: 78.20 - 208.71. Current price: 203.80
- VulgusPecum, on 10/25/2009, -3/+22Oh boo hoo, $999, try and come buy one here in France... Hello $1230 for the same exact product.
- techdever, on 10/25/2009, -16/+35There are windows alternatives for both Coda and GarageBand, but no mac alternatives for most games on Windows.
- Esrb99, on 10/25/2009, -4/+22bootcamp
- jv2k, on 10/25/2009, -0/+17That is because other OSs support it while mac does not support any other hardware.
- richardstaboner, on 10/25/2009, -2/+18My stock portfolio disagrees with you.
- ralphthemagi, on 10/25/2009, -1/+17And the average consumer's response to all of that... "iDon't care. I just want to be able to run Microsoft Word, Excel, get my business (Exchange) email, look at porn and edit a few photos/videos as easily as possible. Maybe I'll want to print something."
- zeth006, on 10/25/2009, -3/+19@s73
Congrats, but
1. Please be sure to read our comments in context. I wasn't advertising Windows but replying to a troll about Windows costing $300.
2. Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. It's just an upgrade which inflates the actual cost of OS X. - Dodobutt222, on 10/25/2009, -6/+21PCs can run Mac OS and linux distros as well, so eat it...after the OS question is thrown out, you're paying much more for your mac hardware than PC hardware
- DarkPilot, on 10/25/2009, -0/+14And battery and any resemblance of being portable or a laptop.
- gerryk, on 10/25/2009, -2/+15Given that Apple's market share in the computer market is in or around 10%, I hardly see that as 'one up' on anyone.
- vocalyouth, on 10/25/2009, -0/+13a crackhead?
- mike23w, on 10/25/2009, -4/+17You're right.
Steve Jobs, a billionaire that grew Apple from near bankruptcy into the company it is today , has no idea what he's doing. - zeth006, on 10/25/2009, -4/+17Nothing wrong Vista beyond all the idiotic media hype, which renders the Vista point moot.
- Zap2, on 10/25/2009, -4/+17I was waiting for a new Macbook...my needs are light, and I figured I could use the price cut.
This update was lacking. The design isn't that new(its sooo similar to the old one), it didn't pick up some of the nice things from the MBP(SD card, FW port of some type), also internals are very similar to the last model. Would be nice if we got a 7200RPM drive as BTO, as now its a pain in the neck to open and install you're own.
Could have used a price drop to 899 or 799. - ban1d0, on 10/25/2009, -4/+16Oh wow...just wow.
Apple fanboys are so annoying. - burketo, on 10/25/2009, -2/+14Well here in Ireland, that mac costs €929. For €899 I can buy a dell Studio XPS 13" with 4 Gb of ddr3 ram, 500GB hdd (7200rpm), windows 7 64 bit, Intel 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo and a card reader.
The dell is literally better in every single way.

http://www1.euro.dell.com/ie/en/home/Laptops/lapto ... - Ahmon, on 10/25/2009, -1/+13Only people who want to see Apple go bankrupt want licensed Apple machines. It's been tried before.
- Amshel, on 10/25/2009, -4/+15Apple only lowered the price of one of their MacBooks to $999 in response to Microsoft's commercials, where they sent customers into a store and bought their ideal laptops for under $1000.
- TheJuggernaut, on 10/25/2009, -4/+15Like others have said — I love Apple's line of Macs. I don't have a problem shelling out $1999 for a nicely-equipped MBP for what I do at work (run both Mac OS and Windows), but I can't say that I'd shell out $999 for say, a second computer my wife can use Facebook and e-mail on; it's hard to compete with a netbook or $399 for that. If they want to keep a high-end reputation, drop the $999 plastic MacBook and just go for classiness. If they want a low-end plastic offering, it better be $799 at the highest, if not $599.
- Canadianpj, on 10/25/2009, -6/+17That's an awesome, ignorant opinion. What are you 11 years old?
- HamNCheese, on 10/25/2009, -4/+15Right, cause Grandma can hackintosh...
- Kapitaine, on 10/25/2009, -6/+17My $700 HP laptop has SD/ XD MMC card reader, ethernet port, 4 USB ports, expansion port, CD / DVD player / burner, VGA port, 4GB RAM, 260GB hard drive etc etc.
Could Apple give me that? No, but I do understand Apple is targeted to a luxury niche. That's fine but not what I wanted. I don't care if my laptop is made of cheap plastic. It's flexible and let's me get on with what I want to do. - LiquidIse, on 10/25/2009, -1/+12I used to think that as well, but I think the iPod is a perfect contradiction to the idea that apple uses exclusivity as a marketing tool.
- bigteebo, on 10/25/2009, -9/+20PC: Hey Mac, what you doing?
Mac: Going through these loan applications.
PC: You're taking out a loan?
Mac: No, these are the loan apps people are taking out for so they can buy our hardware.
* Cue commercial music * - JoeHague, on 10/25/2009, -10/+20I couldn't agree more.
The problem, as the article alludes to, is Apple laptops aren't exactly loaded in the hardware department.
Similarly spec-ed Windows laptops are generally much cheaper.
It seems when you buy a MacBook your paying a hefty price for OSX and a polycarbonate case. -
