- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20.Mac users... thats who.
I know this may come as a shock... but mac users don't always have their systems with them. - geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14You mean the snapback button from Safari (and iTunes)?
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12i think of .macs biggest misconceptions is that it's *just* email.
if you're using .mac for solely the email feature, i completely agree with you. if you use it to it's potential, it's an excellent resource.
i will say .mac is pricey, no argument. but, if you can afford the service, some of it's other features make it a nifty service to have. what other features? namely multiple system synchronizations etc. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11This question gets asked on digg every week... A few of us answer but our posts fall on deaf ears.
The reason I use .mac is because it synchronizes my calendars and my address book. There are countless competitors for email and webspace but ZERO competitors for seamless sync of calendars and address book.
If you have more than one mac (and possibly a phone/pda too) it's worth having all this stuff sync automagically. - zenatek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10People like to put down .mac but its ease of use for the average user really is good, and this will be even better. Not everyone who uses a computer is like all of us at Digg. There are people out there that struggle with simple things like email. I know if my grandma could check her email anywhere and it acted and looked just like her email program at home she would be very happy.
Also I have yet to find a web based email provider that integrates with a mail app. It is really great to have the two interfaces mirrored so that if I delete a message in either my mail app or my web based inbox it is duplicated on the other service. - wackylilmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12gmail interface is horrible, in my opinion. it's not for everybody. i'm excited for this since i use dot mac and like mention above, do not always have my computer with me.
- zenatek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8So if you delete an email on your web based Gmail it will somehow go into your outlook or mail program and delete the copy locally saved on your computer? I don't think so.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"You can do that with Gmail."
Wrong, untill Gmail starts using IMAP, it won't. - marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What webmail? I was looking at the girl's boobs.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Gmail, don't you mean a free good service, the primary word being free!
- macnerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I tried to use gmail and it works good using POP if POP is all your going to use. If you check your email on the web, the next time you check your mail with your client (pop) the mail you checked on the web won't download. You have to go into the gmail preferences and tell it to download all mail on next pop access.
I check my mail via .mac at work and with Mail app at home. When I get home I still get my email downloaded to my client. Once of reasons I like .mac. - r3zonance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"stuck in 2002 for about 4 years now"
Isn't that a given, considering it's 2006 :D - WebCester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not true. I use gmail as a completely normal POP email server with Mail.app. And when I need it some place else, I use it as webmail. I still have my own email server set up, but I'm starting to use it to forward to my gmail accounts instead.
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Aaaaah... I guess I read it wrong.
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try jungledisk www.jungledisk.com for an idisk replacement. only 15 cents per gig..
Really works well! - thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2POP is useless. The whole point of webmail is to access from multiple computers. POP allows you to use a mail client, but effectively the messages retrieved go just to that client and are removed from the server, defeating the multiple computer ideal. IMAP is the only way to go, so that either webmail or mail client is a view of the data on the mail server.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Direct link:
http://www.mac.com/1/webmail.html - virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yes, I agree. .Mac isn't just a web email service, despite what most people think, you can host websites, have your public folder...actualy be public, you can ftp it from your desktop and much more useful features. It isnt just a GMail alternative.
- thinkdifferent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@keikun
That's fine if you want to use web mail always. I prefer using an email client & only fall back to webmail when I need to. Gmail means I'm stuck in webmail all the time. - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have it set so that my messages remain on the server. IMAP is better, though, I agree. If a service provides affordable IMAP, I would have a reason to switch.
- marbant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the biggest problem with .mac is the performance - a mounted idisk in europe is like copying to a floppy.
- foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1dude why bother? all this is accessible from anywhere. I have a mac at home and a PC at work and I use:
email and address book (and chat) - gmail.com
calendar - calendar.google.com (by far the best)
todo - voo2do.com (definitely the best)
comprehensive chat - radiusim.com or meebo.com (I use adiumX and gaim though, you don't need to "sync" chat apps)
word processor - writely.com (just started using this finally)
web collaboration - writeboard.com (been using it regularly for over a year and I love it)
customized home page - netvibes.com
online storage - I never use this but there are tons of plugins for gmail and tons of web services that do it.
there you go. the only native apple app I use for this stuff now is mail since mail is server based, but only at home of course. My last reason to stick with mail recently got removed though, which was quick keyboard shortcuts to label messages. (there's a mail plugin that does this) I found a greasemonkey script or something that will do this on gmail too. But so far I haven't made the jump since it would be a BIG jump.
Anyway using these instead is much easier and simpler. why have client, sync program, other client when you can just have client? - mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here is a little trick for you .Mac members...
sign up for .Mac and day after thanksgiving and it's only 20 bucks for the whole year.
i did it lastyear.... well worth it at that price. :) - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1-nm- (digg bug)
- PeteyEks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love how every one forgets to mention the Learning Center.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I currently pay $20 a year for POP/SMTP access to Yahoo Mail and 2 GB of storage. If Apple provides something competitively priced with this interface, I could switch.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2People "put down" .MAC because it costs $140CAN a year. For what it does, that is just a ***** rip off.
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1We all said it needed it, and we wanted it, and they gave us it... eventually. Proof that they may take their time but Apple do deliver. In the words of Steve Jobs "great artists ship".
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Sorry, too little too late. With all the great "free" alternatives, my .Mac account is just ticking away to the inevitable cancellation (or, lack of renewal is more like it).
Unless they lower the price DRASTICALLY, I see no reason to continue another year wasting the money.
.Mac is quickly becoming the "AOL" of the Mac World. - siMac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3My .mac account expires in seven days and this time I won't be renewing. I've been a paid up member since iTools but it simply isn't competetive enough anymore.
Webmail -> gMail
iDisk -> Xdrive
Homepage -> regular hosting for €1.50pcm (*with* PHP/MySQL)
iSync -> this is the only one I can't completely replace for free, but I can achieve synchronized contacts/calendars across machines via my iPod/phone.
Net savings: €81 per year. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Yeah, and that $99 automagically falls out of your pocket too, just great.
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1I mean thte way it was shaded. But your right haha
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2True, the other features are nice, but can all be achieved with free alternatives.
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I was distracted by Jamie Groh's blatant disregard for punctuality.
- Goatman, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Finally Apple has caught up to the likes of Microsoft Live Mail.
- mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Anyone notice that the selected email is from Katie Lorenzo and in the preview section it says Amy Lorenzo, and that they're about 1 hour separated in time?
- KIERANMULLEN, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5My gmail is up to 2768 MB of space now. (FYI Gmail is alwasy increasing their space)
What is .mac going to up it to? - geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2You can do that with Gmail.
- keikun, on 10/12/2007, -18/+8hence the use of Gmail...
- opensourcemaven, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1http://roundcube.net - webmail for the future, now that's where it's at
- tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -24/+9Who uses .Mac webmail anyways? Either you use Mail.app to access .Mac or you use a good webmail service like Gmail.
- virtualball, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1Anyone notice tat the wuick reply button looks like the back button from IE7? :P
