- SenatorPenguin, on 07/03/2009, -5/+89I love the ridiculous speculation that accompanies security flaws.
"It works by exploiting a weakness in the iPhone’s SMS protocols and could allow cybercriminals to track the phone’s location by tapping in to its GPS features, remotely activate the microphone for eavesdropping, or transform the handset into a botnet used for sending spam or committing online crime, or instigating a distributed denial of service attack that could bring down a website."
Also: “I can definitely make the thing crash,” he said. “I have still to determine whether it’s actually exploitable or not."
The iPhone glitch also allows computerized hacker-persons to use the battery to shock the user into submission, steal your wallet through the dock port, and use the vibration motor to escape to safety. - KJGJ, on 07/03/2009, -2/+38"I'm extremely interested in science and programming so I know a lot about Apple and trust me they wouldn't create a flaw they have good programmers."
*Sigh* - mmpre, on 07/03/2009, -1/+35469 characters before the first period. I applaud you my friend; that is impressive.
- inkswamp, on 07/03/2009, -14/+41You're the first person ever to think up that hilarious comment. Congrats on being such a unique thinker.
- SteveMax, on 07/03/2009, -4/+26Crash/exploit via SMS? I really can't see how this could happen unless they have a pretty ***** up parser set up and a possibility of a buffer overflow. The fix should be simple anyway.
- craftyguy, on 07/03/2009, -1/+22Wait, but SMS on my iphone doesn't need an exploit to crash, it does it automatically :(
- TDDebug, on 07/03/2009, -0/+21They parse all sorts of stuff in messages... like phone numbers. I'm sure there are tons of *****-ups.
- J3553, on 07/03/2009, -14/+34apple products don't have flaws. this is just a great new feature, available for a limited time. take advantage of it while you can!
i love my iphone. sometimes it can sense when i've had enough of a phone conversation, and it HANGS UP FOR ME. how awesome is that? - mmpre, on 07/03/2009, -0/+20Dude, read his other comments, it gets worse.
- inkswamp, on 07/03/2009, -3/+21I understood what he meant although I don't know how possible it is. But it made sense to me.
See, there was a time, back when SteveMax joined Digg, when these forums were populated mostly by computer geeks and programmers with insightful or interesting comments to make. Now it's mostly overrun with trend-hoppers who think Digg is the latest add-on for Facebook and script kiddies looking for some hand-holding through the latest and greatest jQuery tricks. - scoot2006, on 07/03/2009, -4/+22Off topic, but does anyone else hate the audio ads? They annoy the ***** out of me.
- DRNOOO, on 07/03/2009, -1/+16but they real question everyone wants answered !
................................................................................do they have a bug fix for AT $ T yet ? - inkswamp, on 07/03/2009, -1/+16Per se.
- Brak710101, on 07/03/2009, -1/+15“I can definitely make the thing crash,” he said. “I have still to determine whether it’s actually exploitable or not. This thing has the potential to be really serious, but I’m still looking at it and Apple is still looking at it.”
Congratulations, you found a software bug and are trying to make it out as a security vulnerability. I highly doubt there is really any over-flow or injection attack happening here. I bet he found something that just cases the phone to crash.
Of course that needs fixed, but I doubt we'll ever see a proof-of-concept exploit. - Diggsterrr, on 07/03/2009, -2/+15How bout preparing for a MMS patch???
- dexter311, on 07/04/2009, -0/+13How about fixing how the ***** notifications that come up for low battery or SMS received prevent the alarm from going off... I've slept in so many times due to my freakin phone's alarm not going off because someone sent a text in the middle of the night. Then you pick it up in the morning, click OK on the notification and the alarm blares...
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+14123, "I'm extremely interested in science and programming." Are you truly insane or is this some kind of game? I need to know. Please, help me out here.
- itsradBrad, on 07/03/2009, -0/+13Lol, wow that is hilarious. I thought the 1st paragraph was a joke too until I saw the quotes.
- Brak710101, on 07/03/2009, -6/+18You mean there are advertisements?
(Adblock+) - stuffradio, on 07/03/2009, -11/+23It's a true statement if you look at the cult of Apple and how they slam Windows for being so insecure.
- inkswamp, on 07/03/2009, -1/+12Wonder how many on Digg nowadays even know what you're talking about.
- inactive, on 07/04/2009, -1/+11screw the SMS patch. I want the MMS patch...
...as in, turn on my frakkin MMS, AT&T! - CityandColourrr, on 07/03/2009, -5/+14Awesome. How about they fix the way that SMS randomly freezes and then takes 2 minutes to continue what I was originally typing?
- antdude, on 07/03/2009, -4/+12Ads?
- inkswamp, on 07/03/2009, -3/+11Been using SMS on my iPhone for a year, never once experienced that. Have you considered taking it in to have it looked at?
- nextekcarl, on 07/03/2009, -0/+8I think this is the Trollbot 2.0 (now with more annoyance!) I've heard about it before, but this is the first I've ever seen it in the wild.
- stuffradio, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7@mmpre I think I would implode if I even attempted to. I have to anyways because you told me :(
- bradleyland, on 07/03/2009, -1/+7All software has flaws. Get over it.
- ceolwulf, on 07/03/2009, -2/+8I bet it's something like "when you send the text 'rm -rf /' it totally ***** it up, dude!"
- Nothlit, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6MMS was already released in the OS 3.0 update. Blame AT&T for failing to support it, not Apple.
- stuffradio, on 07/03/2009, -1/+7This fine specimen is what's wrong with today's programmers to be in the world of Apple. They're so ignorant, I've encountered him in another Apple article before iPhone 3GS launched saying how he was so special to use his "resources" to obtain the videos.
/le sigh - egemenbor, on 07/04/2009, -4/+9what is this ads you speak of?
- DomZy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5I've never noticed this, but that is quite annoying.
- chadsmith729, on 07/03/2009, -3/+8So what the major multi-gajillion dollar company has to patch something that just came out. In my opinion people are making a big deal out of nothing. I'm happy they are patching it, great for them. They could just have been like "meh, whatever" but they aren't. So kudos to you Apple, way to actually care about the people buying your product.
- TheRascalKing, on 07/04/2009, -0/+5Preparing? I've got your MMS patch right here!
http://www.raf-upper-heyford.org/Patches/Patch_320 ...
You're welcome. - GeckoSlayer, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4report them to digg support, it's the only way they will get rid of them :P
- MacParrot, on 07/04/2009, -0/+4What? A popular phone that people actually WANT to use? Right, could never happen.
- inkswamp, on 07/03/2009, -2/+6I'm not an Apple fanboy but this will sound like I am. I can honestly say that Apple's service is impeccable, at least what I've experienced. I'd recommend taking it in to have them look at it regardless of its condition. They're not like most places or companies that will look for any way to tell you "tough luck" and send you on your way. I've always encountered an immediate willingness to try to fix the issue.
- aristotle0dude, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3Why is it that PC users seem to be the most clueless about technology while the typical stereotype on the web is that mac users are noobs? Fixing this vulnerability will not require a new version of iTunes and Quicktime you idiot. It will however, require a download of a new version of iPhone OS which will weigh in around 298 MB.
Are you on dialup or something? Why is it that PC users seem to complain about the size of updates and how much memory programs take?
Here is my take on it. Windows users obsess over memory usage because windows has poor memory management compared with Unix and unix-like OSes like Linux. So when a program uses a lot of memory, they get worried because windows will have a hard time managing physical and Virtual memory while maintaining a responsive UI. Windows sucks. - mrBitch, on 07/04/2009, -1/+4Ha ha ha ha! You didn't read the article did you?
This isn't even a confirmed "vulnerability".
FTA :
" .. I can definitely make the thing crash,” he said. “I have still to determine whether it’s actually exploitable or not. This thing has the potential to be really serious, but I’m still looking at it and Apple is still looking at it.” - christoast, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3his other comments are hilarious. Smug + annoying + pretends to know ***** he doesn't know about = comedy
- CityandColourrr, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4I haven't, but I've got two other people who experience the same problems.
It might be an AT&T issue, because as soon as this happens, my signal drops completely, changes to "Searching..." and then comes back.
I considered taking it to Apple/AT&T, but I have a cracked screen (Still 100% operational), but I figured because of that they wouldn't honor any helping or service. - MacParrot, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3ohreilly you DO know how to read right? Just as I give Mac users a hard time for repeating over and over the false mantra of Windows being some kind of Virus magnet and OS X being insanely secure, when an article has incomplete or untrue information they should be called on it no matter who it comes from. As far as wyodiver goes, he's a idiot troll with nothing more to contribute than his less than clever post above. It's people like him that give my hometown (Fort Lauderdale) a bad name.
- Billions, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3I guess they did fix that... I don't doubt you're having that problem, but I haven't seen that... Ever. The closest thing to what you're talking about was the occasional strange stop during typing that would occur for about 3 seconds and then rush out the buffered type you had entered while it was stopped. But that vanished with one of the 2.0 updates.
- CityandColourrr, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3Yeah, that used to always happen to me, but still on 3.0 is happens, as does a random signal drop which causes the SMS app to freeze.
- inkswamp, on 07/04/2009, -5/+8Right, because there's absolutely no truth to the fact that Windows has security issues.
- smcavoy, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2ummm.... where's symbian?
- mrBitch, on 07/04/2009, -1/+3@ ThaDRD, RE: " .. What else is new, the iPhone is the least secure of the big three (iPhone, WinMo, and BlackBerry) "
The security "research report" you linked to was quite a funny read.
Was it an intended joke, or is the writer an idiot?
The fact that you can jailbreak an iPhone ONLY when you have physical access to the phone is their biggest issue with the iPhone.
This is NOT a security issue, and the fact that this "research paper" confuses the ability to hack a device with remote security threats is quite laughable.
You obviously suffer from the same confusion. - TheSnuffster, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Not necessarily @stuffradio.
- jonnyeh, on 07/04/2009, -4/+6It may be an obvious and cliche statement, but it still needs to be said.

What is Digg?
