You mean like Dell and EVERYBODY ELSE?
Why are you singling Apple out? - auxplage, on 10/12/2007, -5/+57The 1.6 million Macs was still above estimates.
The 21 million iPods beat most estimates by 5 million. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37"100% of all Apple users with Intel Macs now run windows."
Do you actually believe this *****? - idean360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28"Apple's market share is bigger than BMW's or Mercedes's or Porsche's in the automotive market. What's wrong with being BMW or Mercedes?" - Steve Jobs
Dell is more of a ...honda or toyota. - NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Scabbers,
Try going to any factory in China, and ask the people there whether they'd rather be home on the farm. There's a reason why they stream into the cities, just as westerners did during the industrial revolution.
-jcr - Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Mac sales aren't quite as strong in the 4th quarter as you might think because of Macworld. Many people wait until after Macworld in case any systems are updated.
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24The reason why there was no rise in Mac sales is the previous quarter included all the "back to school" computer sales, which tends to be as big a boost to sales as Xmas is.
- MikeDugg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24"100% of all Apple users with Intel Macs now run windows. That means Windows penetration on the desktop went from 96% to 99.99%."
Huh? What on earth makes you think that. I'm a Mac user with an Intel mac, and I don't run windows. - cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28People shouldn't look at the total number of Macs sold. The only number that counts:
Mac shipments rose 28%, more than double the growth of the overall PC market.
Which basically means the share of Macs is getting bigger and the share of PCs smaller. Though, we are talking about (still) small numbers. - evansls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Quarter numbers for the last 6 years for macintosh and ipod.

Not out of the box, they don't. And the majority of Macs out there are still PPC so your logic is sort of... illogical.
> That means Windows penetration on the desktop went from 96% to 99.99%.
Heh... that's an appropriate turn of phrase. When I think of Microsoft gaining market share, the word "penetration" definitely comes to mind. - Odiwan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+151000 pink ones, on Ebay.

You bought the Dell music player because it is not infected with "DRM trickery"? ... which, by the way, is a completely false statement, because protected WMA files that you purchase from the various WMA music stores play on your fancy-shmancy Dell DJ. Oh, and then, BTW, you don't need to purchase and download tracks from the iTunes Store to use your iPod -- you can rip tracks to MP3 or un-protected AAC format (both open standards), and transfer them to your iPod.
Of all the reasons not to get an iPod, yours really takes the cake.

Don't compare quarter to following quarter! It's a 28% increase over last years Q1! This technology sector is very cyclical. Maybe people should do their own research before reacting. I'm a powerbook & macmini user and aapl investor, and somehow I dont' know my ***** when earnings estimates come out.
-You beat me to it, dork. - cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Is it possible that digger 'Lynn' is actually Bloomberg collumnist Matthew Lynn who just gave his thumbs down to the iPhone? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/commentary/lynn.html
They both also live in London, coincidence?
Funny to see how biased his comments on digg are. All pro Xbox360/Microsoft and con Apple.
Go Bloomberg!
Anyone wanna make a nice digg story out of it? - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12There are 6 billion people on the planet. If even 1 billion of them are in the market for music players, and Apple's sold less than 100 million iPods, you can be damned sure there's plenty of room to make up. And then by the time you've actually sold that billion, the first round of purchasers will need new ones. And you'll release iPods with updated specs and features. Apple's not worried as much about saturation as they are shortage of materials to actually build the damned things, they can't get them manufactured fast enough to keep up with demand.
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Really? I work for an institution that has around 4000 Macbooks. None of them run Windows.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23I bet they don't.
- cheez124, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13@superKduper
i think you are a certified grade A reatard. if you even took 20mins on a mac (not at a apple store) i bet you would buy one, everyone thinks macs are so ***** but if you took the time to look, OSX is a rock solid OS, virus free, fast running, (even on old and low end macs) and i really dont care it has no game support, its a personal computer not a console, if im going to play games id rather play on my 52" HD sony. not hunched over a desk(if thats your thing i have nothing against it.). its great and easy to do computing. Macs have good hardware even the powerpc macs run faster than most wintels ive used. so all i have to say is open your eyes. - digitalrhino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@Dumbledorito
"Not true. You can replace every part of a PC from any generic vendor. Not so for Apple."
Uh, Some of them: yes. Alot of the name brand ones: no, Laptops: not a chance. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Mac's are no more proprietary than any generic PC these days.
- mykyi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Damn Apple!, I hate proprietary, but everything they make looks so sleek and friendly, they might convert me with that damn iphone!!!
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This is the same for nearly every volatile stock, because people "buy on rumor, sell on news." Meaning the stock price was increasing during the run-up to the earnings report, and now there's profit-taking. If you feel Apple is a good investment as I do, you'll just buy more as it goes down, and dollar-cost average.
- shank2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah you are so much smarter than everyone else, you figured it all out! The iPod took 75% of the marketshare for mp3 players because of nothing but marketing, right? After all people buy them because they are uneducated, right? Not because teh iPod has the best user interface, great sound, great size and sexy looking, right? Not because iTunes is one of the best ways to manage music, right? Not because of how easy it is to use, right? Definitely crap because the batteries die on the 1st gen ipods a bit prematurely... ignoring the fact that the iPod is on the 5th gen now and no battery problems, they did at a time in the PAST, so it must still be true, right? Hmmm five other people I know went and bought iPods after playing around with mine for a while and seeing how great it is to use, and that is without even seeing how great iTunes is to use!
I used to think an mp3 player is an mp3 player, why would I want an iPOD? Until I got one for Christmas from the company I work for and I saw for myself how great it is. I promptly went out and bought my wife and her sister one for Christmas the next year, even though they both already had mp3 players. They love their iPods.
I'll give you a clue, the iPod is not selling so well by accident. It really is better than anything else out there, even after all this time! Wow imagine that! - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+81 billion profit in 3 months. You can make light of their computer market share but you can't make light of that kind of money.
- Lax32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Not really...
Just because Macs can now run Windows via Bootcamp doesnt mean that all, most, or even a sizable amount of mac users are going to be running Windows instead of OSX flat out or even just on a regular basis.
Personally I havent even heard of anyone who uses windows on their mac for anything outside of the rare incompatable program/gaming.
Jobs is hardly throwing in the towel, he is just taking away any real reason people wouldnt buy a mac. Before if you didnt like it you were out the entire price. Now if you dont like OSX you are out the price of XP/Vista. - cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Well, I got this quote from www.marketwatch.com. Here is the link to their story:
http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/apple-profit-rises-78-ipod/story.aspx - cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9senseigmg is right:
from the marketwatch.com article:
"The Mac results were a slightly below many analysts forecasts, as several had expected Apple to sell between 1.75 million and 1.8 million Macs during the quarter."
Very cool Graphs of sales (unfortunately in German):
http://www.fscklog.com/2007/01/details_und_gra.html - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I saw a report somewhere that iPod outsold Zune 30:1 over the holiday season.
Figuring 21,000,000 iPod units sold, that would put the Zune at 700,000 unit sales. Which I find unbelievable, seeing as I have yet to meet anyone who actually owns a Zune. - amohongos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Globalization isn't entirely bad, but it really boils down to a matter of ethics. It's true that Western companies are giving people in the third world jobs that they wouldn't have otherwise, and it's true that globalization has lifted the economy in many countries, and those are good things. But I also think they have an ethical obligation to treat their workers in a humane way. Modern industry has proven time and again that they'll exploit human beings for profit. It started with slavery, and when that became illegal, they moved on to child labor in the first world. When child labor in the first world was outlawed, they moved on to third world countries with lax labor laws. Now the wages in some of those third world countries are getting a little too high for some corporations to bear, and they're moving on to even poorer countries -- why pay a Mexican $1.50 an hour when you can pay an African 10 cents an hour?
In my opinion, you shouldn't be in business if you're unwilling to pay people a living wage. When capitalism goes completely unchecked, a minuscule portion of the world gets rich at the expense of the impoverishment of the majority. I know there's nothing I can do about it, but it sickens that we live in a world where that's acceptable to so many people. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You are being dugg down because what you want already exists, it's just apparently too expensive for you. Apple likes to keep it simple and not offer too many configurations although I do agree a non-pro desktop would be a good idea. I doubt it will happen any time soon though. Apple hasn't really tried to get into the gaming market so they don't feel the need for super graphics power on their consumer desktops.
- corsa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Here we go again. What DRM trickery? The DRM is on purchases from the iTunes store.
Every method you've used to get music onto your Dell DJ will work with the iPod too. (I'm assuming you haven't put DRM'd wma files on your Dell, since you seem to be so against DRM. Those obviously won't work on the iPod.)
Not saying your DJ is a bad player, just pointing out that the iPod can be used in the exact same non-DRM way. - mochaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah!
and 75% mp3 players market and mp3 downloads. - NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I dug you up just so you won't get the satisfaction of a huge number of buries. Keep this ass between -10 and 0!
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Pfff... that's trading 101: "buy on the rumor, sell on the news"
As long as the sales are not out and numbers are only rumors the sky is the limit in theory, but as soon as the news is out the numbers are set in stone. - marco114, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I've never understoon why people want to spend so much money on a computer to play games. To have a kick butt gaming system PC, you'll easily spend $2k-$3k on a really nice system. Instead, buy a $1500 Mac and a $600 PS 3 and you'll rock the world. The coolest games these days are on consoles. I'd much rather sit at my couch with my son and play a game of Halo vs. sitting all crowded around a (small) 20" screen.
