- jazzmann04, on 10/17/2007, -9/+28This is going to be the longest 4 months ever!
- MacPPC, on 10/17/2007, -1/+19Well, kudos to Apple to embracing the 3rd party community, and it looks like one of the cons of the iphone is gone, yet more good reasons to get one of them
- neonfunk, on 10/17/2007, -0/+15... or they were planning it all along.
ye of little faith. - HotAirBaffoon, on 10/17/2007, -0/+14Note to the morons who don't get it - AAPL has been planning this all along - they were first focused on getting the iPhone out the door ON TIME, then on Leopard, and now have the time & resources to focus on doing an SDK right. This probably doesn't make sense to those of us Windows Developers that get broken dev apps (or poorly designed ones like .NET) out of the gate and have to beg for patches to bring it up to full functionality. The BIG difference here is that AAPL doesn't just hire more bodies regardless of talent to throw at the problem of the day. I fully expect the quality to shine through in February yet again.
- CraigJ, on 10/17/2007, -3/+16This is great. It is obvious (to me, anyway) that the reason they didn't release an SDK immediately is because the dev team that is going to be building the SDK was busy building Leopard. Apple may be a realitively big company, but dev resources are always limited.
- CraigJ, on 10/19/2007, -0/+12you care enough to click the link and make a comment. When I see something I'm not interested in I just don't click. easy.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/17/2007, -5/+17right in time for the next iPhone.
- jwaire, on 10/17/2007, -4/+15Direct link, http://www.apple.com/hotnews/
- cgruber, on 10/19/2007, -1/+10I hope that the applications can be optionally be FREE. What I mean by this is if someone wants to charge for it cool, but if they want to give it away it they can. And I hope it doesn't cost a ton of money to register to be a developer.
- singingfishy, on 10/17/2007, -1/+9iPhone SDKs and $.99 DRM-Free Songs and Leopards... OH MY! Good job Apple!
- slappingturtle, on 10/17/2007, -5/+12Awesome! This is great news.
- aaronmcdonald, on 10/17/2007, -6/+13Definitely worth the wait!
- TomFrost, on 10/17/2007, -1/+8God I know, it drives me nuts too. I should really buy a mouse that doesn't automatically click on the articles and make me read them. That's totally everyone else's fault but mine!
- tommanb182, on 10/17/2007, -3/+10Cheers to Apple on this one.
Hopefully this SDK will be available to ALL developers, not just the ones Apple hand picks. I don't want to pay 10 bucks a pop every time I want to add a new app. - danasghar, on 10/19/2007, -2/+9So will all the people who were pissing on Apple only a week ago fess up and admit they were a bit premature in their tantrums? Obviously we can all see now there was a method behind this.
- Sairynn, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6You know what I hate more? People who expect a device or company to do everything they desire, regardless of any hidden legal or business reasons, and then whine and throw a temper tantrum over it. Cry me a ***** river, the iPhone is a great device and it's about to get even better.
- noahhoward, on 10/19/2007, -0/+6You haven't withheld them long enough. Unplug your keyboard until we tell you otherwise.
- Zippo, on 10/17/2007, -1/+7This is how you run a business, folks. You listen to your customers.
- quickslvr1287, on 10/19/2007, -0/+6Great news, hopefully now we will be able to see the true potential of the iPhone
- CraigJ, on 10/19/2007, -1/+6Stick your hand in and flip the switch. Let us know how that works out for you.
- TomFrost, on 10/17/2007, -0/+5First, it's $399. Second, do you honestly believe no other factor -- the massive uprising of customers, for example -- led to this than someone else's phone? Seriously.
- Z_Man, on 10/19/2007, -2/+6At least we know Apple, for the most part, knows what we want and is willing to give it to us.
- maverick999, on 10/17/2007, -5/+9Original story with direct link to article: http://www.digg.com/apple/CONFIRMED_Real_iPhone_SD ...
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4I've been telling people for months that Apple was going to release an SDK, but people are impatient whiners these days. Apple's first priority was obviously to get the product out of the door. If they would have waited for an SDK to be ready, they would of had to delay it and guess how much more whining we would had heard then.
- dvandewalle, on 10/17/2007, -1/+5we all knew that this was going to come, just looks like they finally have the resources now to do it. can't wait for it to come up here to Canada!
- ElBob, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4See, the thing is that most people just assume that Apple has the manpower to write all of this at once. Apple may be a big presence in the industry, but they really aren't a huge company compared to some of the others. Pile their desire to keep an image on top of that, and they really don't like to put out things that aren't done. It may not be the most convenient thing ever, but its a lot better than if they put out some half assed, sorta kinda works piece of crap.
- hellogoodbye, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4This is awesome... I can't wait to get apps on my phone without having to hack the damn thing.
- noahhoward, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4ADC registration is free.
- colincornaby, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Apple doesn't charge for their existing developer kits...
- battletops, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3I was all prepared to scold the submitter for stating a rumor as fact.
I'm glad I was wrong. - christor, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3"Not a judgement, just stating what i believe to be facts." And so that first part of your comment - the part that say "from what I understand," needs to be edited to read "from what I'm guessing."
- UGM2099, on 10/19/2007, -2/+5This is great news. After having Jailbroken my iPod Touch I could never go back to a non-app laden version.
- lukee, on 10/17/2007, -2/+5In Jobs We Trust.
- CraigJ, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Well, it is *****, but that applies to your comments. I work for a large dev organization. SDKs are almost always released later, because generally, the dev team building the SDK is the same team that built the product the SDK is for, and Sales will never agree to hold the release of user product for an SDK. THat, and the fact that the SDK is generally evolved from internal tools used by the dev team that need to be cleaned up, QA'd, packaged, have doc written, etc. We also don't pre announce the availability of an SDK until we know that we have a real solid release timeline. there is nothing worse that announcing a forthcoming product "sometime in the future".
All you armchair wannabe development experts make me laugh. - listrophy, on 10/17/2007, -1/+4That "CONFIRMED" article doesn't have a permalink. This one does.
- danasghar, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2you seem smart
- DreKor, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2That's actually a good thing. There's a saying about using the right tool for the job. Some tasks are very well suited to a web application. However, other tasks can be done better by a dedicated local app. I'd rather wait a few months for something that works well, than try to force a workaround via the web.
- Oktobernv, on 10/17/2007, -2/+4WAY COOL!!
Nice job APPLE.
Thanks for listening to your very LOYAL fans.
Great move.
Rob in Vegas - rads, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Yes, this is what happens in a free market.
- geminitojanus, on 10/17/2007, -3/+4Any Joe Blow will be able to write an application for the iPhone and run it with his/her own personal key too. They just won't be able to distribute it without a Global key. Symbian developers have had to put up with this ***** for years and years now.
Welcome to Trusted Computing. Have a nice. - cleverboy, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1dcmjzero, don't throw an onus on it, but I agree with the FIRST part. Don't stop developing yet... you will probably need to recompile your app, and do a few more things, but odds are, those with experience in developing for the iPhone will be the first to be able to utilize the SDK.
- TecHeavy, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1That was funny.
- Eallan, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1I'm completely ok with people not making web PAGES for the iPhone.
Stuff like seeqpod is nice, but other pages are just awful. - dcmjzero, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1don't stop developing yet... how much will it cost to get your app digitally signed by apple? i know with phone companies it cost alot of money to get your app signed and listed at their "online store".
- totorototoro, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Translation:
"They should have given this to me at the START! Because I WANTED IT. WAA. WAA. " - beggersfunk, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2This is a good news, thank you Apple.
- colincornaby, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1When it comes to the hardware that 3rd party apps care about... they're pretty much configured the same. Same GPU, CPU, flash memory... OS X abstracts all that stuff anyway...
- RadicalEdward, on 10/17/2007, -2/+3I know he says that it will allow applications to be made for the touch as well. But i REALLY wish people would stop saying that Apps made for the iPhone (by third parties) "naturally" work on the touch. It's just not true. Yes they are both running MOS-X but still, they are configured quite differently.
- yikiad, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2now if they could just get the airdisk to work...
- hobbitaussie, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Depends on the phone. Some Windows Mobile phones will not run any software without being signed by the Carrier. Orange is one.
