- KC311Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I liked it better when it was called a Tablet PC.
- cair0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1those are the most poorly drawn fingers i've ever seen
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait until they make the video iPod (which already is 16x9 size ratio) have a full LCD front panel and use gesture controls on the lcd.
- smaki611, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Newtons Rock. I miss using my old one. OSX tablet edition
- nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd love to see a dual pro Mac tablet...
I almost bought a WinXP tablet awhile back, but the screen resolution was horrible. Recently, I've been pondering buying a Mac for general usage and some Photoshop work... so if a tablet (iTablet?) came out, that would be an insta-buy...
+Digg - aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm guessing an intel based tablet roles out April 1st...
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dont't get too excited folks. Apple patents these kinds of things all the time without ever releasing things. I'm not sure why but I suspect it's a preemptive way to protect some of the results of their R&D or some beta products that will never see the light of day. Who knows? If you've followed Mac rumor sites for any amount of time, you've seen patents come through like these without anything ever coming out.
- furphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yep- definitely :)- the newton is back
more at http://hrmpf.com/wordpress/48/new-apple-patents/ - bseaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My bet is on a touch screen iPod... Why not go ahead and make full (screen) use of the entire front of the iPod?
- conigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What I've always wanted was a dual screen powerbook, where the second screen replaced the keyboard and track pad.... think about it... it could normally be a keyboard, but open a graphic app and the bottom screen changes to a palette, open a music app and it changes to a midi keyboard.... that would be awesome! And it looks like this is one step closer.
- copeland3300, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I guess if the user interfaces with the tablet via a finger, then apple's patent will hold water. Otherwise it's already been around for a while

Not to mention PDA screens. - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha look at those fingers XD

ROFL too true - sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet, if this turns out to be the second coming of the newton, or an ipod with pda features, I'm through my palm in the trash.
- sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*throwing
why can't we edit posts again? - LordofChaosIori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like the future from Minority Report isn't too far away...

Touchscreens have been around for a while, too. Wonderware has been used for touchscreen interfaces for a while. BUT, this is not just a touch and drag "use you finger as a mouse pointer" interface. The addition of gestures makes it a whole different ball of wax.
I, personally, can't wait. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In other news, Apple announced the iPod will now come with black headphones!
Yet another piece of Apple news makes it to the front page. - Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think a new spin on the tablet is exactly what Apple needs to supercharge its laptop line. This rumor seems more feasible than most for the following reasons:
Apple hasn't revised the powerbook in almost half a year, and a duo core intel 12" powerbook was mysteriously left out of the macbook launch. What this means to me is that they are saving the form factor space for something truly extraordinary; something an apple tablet (and Apple will do it RIGHT) would fill quite nicely.
Judgint from the patent, this is probably a product that has been in developement for quite a while. It implements a lot of clever design, including an ipod scroll wheel that I'm assuming will act as the scroll wheel on mouse. Zooming in is done by placing the thumb and index finger on the point you want to zoom into and spreading those fingers apart - very intuitive. The virtual keyboard will be the make or break feature. Without tactile feedback, it's hard to type reliably. The point is, they obviously have been putting quite a bit of thought into this and felt that some of the aforementioned ideas were worth patenting.
Even though Jobs axed the Newton and has been quoted as saying that Apple isn't interested in making PDAs or PDA like devices, this certainly doesn't mean they won't or aren't. After all, this is the same Jobs who said they weren't going to waste their time on PMPs. Microsoft, IMHO, has bungled the launch of their tablet pc OS. It was poorly marketed, under-supported, and rarely updated. But they did HAVE something there: being able to write on and interact with the screen in other ways than a mouse is invaluable for more people than you think. I, for instance, use my Windows tablet PC to take notes in my physics classes because those are notes that you just can't type. If my tablet screen was also touch sensitive, I believe that there would be no need for the convertable variety.
It looks as though my prayers may be answered yet by Apple. The one thing I can say is that if Apple were to come out with a tablet, I would buy it the day it came out. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll have to digg my old Newton outta the closet. Might be time to get primo on eBay.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Totally a new iPod right there :)
- Trojan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is in preparation for a touchscreen iPod for sure. I highly doubt the resurgence of any PDA.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iTab?
iPad?
Mac Tab Pro? - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait! I've been waiting for a tablet OS forever. I'm so happy Apple decided to invent touchscreens.
- CovardeAnonimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0could it be that newton is back ???
- Stegg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also seriously doubt that apple would make an ipod that big. Everyone who's speculating this patent has anything to do with the ipod are WAY off IMO. Apple isn't interested in scaring the general public off with an overcomplicated touchscreen ipod. (Besides, Apple would get more mileage by adding a bluetooth radio and headphones than a touchscreen). No, you won't see Apple monkeying around with their cash cow. Look for this to be the new MacTablet.
- Meowmix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm, Apple patented a tablet design a while back (looked like bottom half of iBook).
This thing has been in development for a while.
*crossing fingers for April 1st* - ScottBookG4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see this coming out anytime soon. Apple has made numerous patents that have never seen the light of day. The first that comes to mind is the illuminating case, or "Mood Mac" that was described two or three years ago. That has never come to fruition.
This will NOT come out on April 1, people, so please stop fooling yourselves! - psients, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YES!! YES!!! THERE IS A GOD!!!
April 1st, here I come! - mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm looking at the whole North America zoom concept they have there, and I'm wondering exactly what the patent text is, because all that's really clear is that it's got a touch screen and you have to have weird-looking fingers to use it.
- Hydroxyethyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's like a Nintendo SS!
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate digging news about a patent, but I really want a usable tablet.
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can this be one of the missing items from Macworld '06? I hope it's a new Newton!!
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dont forget this one too:
