- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -12/+38Thank god for Apple, i've never been capable of choosing my own music. I really can't wait til they choose what websites i visit and what tv shows/movies i watch for me too.
- farfromsubtl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17The person who wrote this article is narrow-minded.
"After all who wants to hear a track sped up so that the vocals sound like Mini Mouse on helium?"
It's called granulization. The music is chopped into tiny bits... if some of those bits are taken away, and the space between them closed, audio can sound faster without a change in pitch. You hear it all the time in pop music, but the just do it so well that you can't tell. - shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Tis must ahve something todo with the Nike + Apple partnership probably the music they will sell on iTunes store as to motivate people whilst doing sports, pretty cool idea if Apple Execute it well and don't charge too much.

One of the above does not rate. - muyuu, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Did they play something really dumb in the background when they passed this to US Patent Office folks?
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ Cymrubeats "Thank god for Apple, i've never been capable of choosing my own music"
That's a nonsense statement! Do you even what the patent entails? It will basically change the songs on your iPod, (one of your own songs, in a select list of running songs chosen by you, not apple) to one that matches the current pace you are running at. i.e. If you slow down, your iPod will select a different song out of your chosen list with a slower bpm to match your current pace. If you wanted to slow down you will enjoy the music. However if you didn't realise you were slowing down until you heard the song change, you can use that info. to tell yourself to speed up and get back in the game! - vegasbright, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17@saggygrandma
Ha! I bet you still think Apple is a computer company, don't you? - WarezAppz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13@saggygrandma
It is precisely THESE types of pretentious comments that give Mac users (presumably like you are) a bad name.
Equally true for Windows users or any other child-minded individual who attempts to make a barbed comment simply to get a 'cute' effect . . . .
*sigh* - monomyth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8your title is misleading
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6New Age make me want to punch somebody in the throat ..
anyway, I've been using playlists based on BPM's for a long time. "MixMeister BPM Analyzer" is fine, but I would prefer it to be an integrated part of iTunes.
I would love to have a workout playlist that selected music based on my heart rate .. but .. don't patent it, just do it! - geminem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This article's source is not the tabloid National Enquirer.
- fgiDangeresque, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ok so i didnt read it yet, but how many games can you think of that alter the tempo of the music to make it harder? how about a last lap at a mario kart? blast corps does it gradually over the whole race. I call this prior art to influencing behaviour based on speed of the music.
Now i'd better go read it in 180 seconds or less ;) - shmatt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Actually Cher uses what's called a Vocoder on that song. It's also what makes Britney, Justin, Jlo etc. sound like they can sing in perfect pitch.
- jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that's real good.
Now, how about they add some features in to the ipod that people really want. Like more format support, recording, radio, better battery life. *rolleyes* - olego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No - we can only sue them if they have a good idea, not a great idea.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6We've really gotta start patenting things under Creative commons.
I've always wanted to syncronise an MP3 player with a tachometer, and the second I heard about Apple being in talks with nike I immediately said that's what they'd be doing.
I'm certainly not looking forward to downloading tracks from my pepsi dollars via itunes to listen to my ipod synced to my nikes.... I'd rather stab needles into my eyes...
Open Source Everything (TM) - cuppyCake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am incredibly amazed at what incredibly mediocre and banal ideas are granted patents.
- OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So OK, now Apple IS creating music, think this will come up in courts over that Beatles record label "apple"? I think it was thrown out because of the fact they didn't "create" music.....
Plus the artists might get all pissy over this as well. - jrbrewin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4they make more money from 'entertainment' gear than they do computers. so it makes sense.... if you actually think, for once.
- Falcorian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Damn them for abusing the broken patent...
Oh wait, did you say Apple? I can't wait for this to come out then! Bless them for their ingenuity! - XTheEliminator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Doesn't Moodlogic have prior art?
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Do you reckon we could successfully word a patent on "good ideas" ? so that every time someone has a great idea, we can sue them? :)
- Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ummm.... we have a treadmill that already does that.. tailors the workout to whatever audio you are feeding in....
- DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That title's slightly inaccurate. When I first read it I thought that Apple had patented all music that had an affect on a persons mood (read all music ever made). I was about to go on a rant about how flawed the U.S.A.'s patent system is.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The second option strikes us as fairly useless."
"...if it goes too fast all the time, then you have to question your fitness level."
Sounds like they found a use for the speed feature in the fourth...section...of that "article".
Sounds like it could be a cool feature. Of course, this requires you to hook up even more things to your body. Seems like making a playlist for each mood isn't good enough anymore. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3then...
Apple sues techno musicians. - RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Coming Up Next: Apple Patents Moods
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The article is rather ignorant though. You can speed up a song without changing the tone. WMP does that. Also, you can change the tone so that a deeper tone sounds like a higher pitched tone such that there is a fine enough granularity that it doesn't get so high it sounds like Minnie Mouse.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"It's called granulization. The music is chopped into tiny bits... if some of those bits are taken away, and the space between them closed, audio can sound faster without a change in pitch"
It sounds to me like if you try to speed up your music more than 10-20% it will utterly ruin its quality. Perhaps they don't need to speed up the music anymore than that? Does this method actually work well? - beanMosheen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They patented the pitch slider? The Granulizer? How? They have been around for quite a while.
- BGOATdoughnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just do it! (tm)
- Cheetos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MacBook 2.0GHz Intel Core
http://www.AppleMegaStore.com - firsttube, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mood Music(tm)? Why didn't I think of that?!
- BGOATdoughnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Something tells me this a really, really bad idea. After 20% faster, it will sound like ***** chipmunks.
- thepharmacist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2For god's sake in the US Disney owns a patent for the happy birthday song... Stupid patents like this aren't new or surprising.
- zezak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@thepharmacist: No, Disney doesn't own a patent for Happy Birthday, but that song was written by real people who own the copyright just as much as, say, the Beatles own the copyrights to their songs.

- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I can picture it now.....Steve Jobs Doing The Mac Rap.
- SilentPurity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Doesn't all music affect your mood? Hmm.....
- mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0DJs change tempo of music to alter it's mood too. That's violation of Apple's patent. Sue now!
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The only mood techno evokes in me is annoyance. I hope Apple hasn't patented that one yet.
- Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Dynamite
- behemothaur, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Next I want them to patent gaylords/gayladies with iPods strapped to their biceps. They brought it, they should own the patent.
- Haroldx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1the enquirer, GREAT SOURCE!
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3It works "well enough" lots of pop idols have their music retuned (the same effect, only keeping the tempo, and changing the pitch)
The majority of the populace doesn't seem to notice, these are the same segment of the population who don't realise the iPod has one of the poorer audio outputs on the market, and buy it because it's pretty (Much like their pop idols) so chances are they're not going to notice some quality loss again.
If you listen to lots of top 40 music, you can pick the effect, they've even used it as an 'effect' from time to time, for example that Cher song 'beleive in love' or what ever it's called. Once you're aware of what it sounds like, it's easy to spot. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6While randomly watching an ipod commercial: "Wow, I really want an Ipod..."
While randomly listening to my Ipod: "Wow, I really feeling a refreshing classic coke..."
While drinking my refreshingly classic coke: "Wow, I really want a full loaded macbook pro..."
While using my low battery life macboo.... *yawn* I feel really tired all of the sudden. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I think people have already tried to do at least part of that (selecting music based on mood).
http://www.moodamp.com/ - saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -49/+12see you can say that but the fact is i bet you are stuck on a microsoft machine and have no choice but to use it the way the way they want...
