- MacPhill, on 01/03/2008, -2/+26Why do the diagrams look like they were drawn by a 5 year old?
- dkoon, on 01/03/2008, -6/+20Luckily on Digg.com, it's only stealing when Microsoft does it.
- newbill123, on 01/03/2008, -4/+12Apple's patent filings:
1. Build a portfolio other computer patent owners will fear & cross-license.
2. Show as few indicators about future products as possible.
3. Result from R&D which may not be profitable to produce or easy enough to use yet.
The dockable computer is probably about an iPhone (it's a computer, right?) but filed in patent drawings to look like old Powerbook Duo type technology. The modifiable display keyboard is probably just to keep Art Lebdev from laying exclusive claim to what will be a key technology on asian language keyboards. And the webcam interleaved with display pixels is probably an idea Steve Jobs had R&D work on after a demo made him look inattentive on iChat, but probably has 7 more years of miniaturization tech needed to make it into a profitable product. - HonoredMule, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6Too bad patent filings are usually the harbinger of marginalization (and ultimately, death or elitism) for emerging technologies.
- sint4x, on 01/03/2008, -1/+6I am excited about the OLED keyboards. If they do create the keyboards maybe they will drive some competition and I wont have to take out a loan to get one.
- MadOtaku, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5Buried for realistic and non-attention-getting description. This has no place on digg; if I wanted realistic Apple news, I'd go elsewhere.
- sint4x, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5I agree with your price point on the OLED keyboard. But its good to hear that more companies are exploring the technology. After all, it will only get cheaper as more and more people use it.
- ozziek, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4It's PARC all over again. Apple sees something cool like Maximus and patents something similar. Of course when Microsoft do something similar fanboys will be saying they copied Apple
Think thesameaseveryoneelse - HonoredMule, on 01/03/2008, -4/+8Why the hell is everyone praising Apple for patenting tech they didn't even invent or isn't even patent-worthy? This is the precise reason that 10 years from now, possibly Apple but definitely NO ONE ELSE will be selling oled keyboards to the masses at all, let alone at competitive pricing in a free and open market, and your non-Apple PDA will be REQUIRED to occupy space separately from a big screen to which it connects, or cost $10 more.
We the customers are the losers here. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -1/+5we use ad block you idiot.
- Rileyper, on 01/03/2008, -2/+6Spoiler alert
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Those screens they 'bought' - they don't actually have them in a warehouse somewhere you know...
- Orion682, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4Touch interfaces have no tactile feedback. some of us type without looking at the keyboard ;)
- republikdh, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Until LED tech becomes cheaper, why even bother with something along the lines of the Maximus keyboard or this supposed prototype from Apple. Something about paying more for the keyboard than the actual computer makes little, if any sense.
Thumbs up on the iMac dock, interesting solution. - brjndr, on 01/03/2008, -2/+5because they were drawn by patent lawyers or engineers, not designers.
- oldhick, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Eh? How is this different than a docking station?
- MacParrot, on 01/03/2008, -2/+4Well, you could, ya know, just stop reading and commenting about them. Or is that more mature than what you were going for?
- gquaglia, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2The Apple version will be cheaper and at least in reach of consumers. The Maximus keyboards are over a grand. Sorry, but that is outrageous for a keyboard.
- Codee, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1"Xynergi" Check it out. Just saw it at NAMM. http://www.fairlightau.com/
- freehunter, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2That's the point, to drive down the price of LED technology.
- crashingechelon, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1The Macbook iMac doc is a nice idea. As for the Maximus type keyboard, I would like them to mass produce it for cost to be down, but at the same time though I would expect it to be Multi-touch. I think it being Multi-Touch it would work a lot better then having each key an individual screen, but the downside is not having the feeling of a keyboard.
- setrusko, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1The dock looks pretty cool. Apple needs to come up with something for docking their notebooks.
- rimantas, on 01/04/2008, -1/+2exactly, so why do I care what my keyboard, oled or not says? http://www.daskeyboard.com/ ftw
- Codee, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Ah, even better here's a Xynergi direct video link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLj5rMREmxY
- cawpin, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1WTF? Does your docking station have a touchscreen? I can't believe people can't see that functionality.
- Codee, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1P.S. make sure to check out the movie section. This thing is sweet.
- Codee, on 01/05/2008, -0/+1Listen, that laptop display dock is freakin' is cool. I'd buy it!
The OLED idea has been hip from day one. Fairlight Systems uses one. - flarn2006, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2Did *anyone* but I notice the typo in the title?
- banmaster, on 01/03/2008, -7/+8You mean 'Bravo the company who Apple blatantly copied' right?
- MacParrot, on 01/03/2008, -2/+3This has been the first "prototype" pre-Macworld that actually has an Apple look to it. I was a big fan of the Pismo G3 laptops and the Duo Dock laptops that Apple had back in the 90s and other than a C2D tower (C'MON Apple, Mac people have only been asking for this since you went Intel), this is one I could get excited about.
Much of it would depend on the supporting gear inside the base station. Enhanced graphics capability would be a plus along with a decent DVD or BluRay disk burner. Probably not this Macworld, but it's something they could come out with without too much trouble. Less than two weeks to go! - bentrinh, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Hopefully Apple could mass produce an Optimus Maximus keyboard... Art Lebedev is selling these for about $1500.
- MacParrot, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Right, more mature than what you were going for. Got it.
- Dweller99, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1"and the thing they're ripping off has been talked about for a number of years"
FTFY - hayden.evans, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1maybe they will sell it for a humane price unlike art lebdev
- fkr3, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2No I think the point is to make a product and then sell it.... the price driving down is a side effect / bargain for the rest of us.
- codejutsu, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1This is eerily like the control consoles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and later. Wonder if they'll go completely dead also as a result of heavy impact from aliens.
- mannypdesign, on 01/03/2008, -3/+3Exaggerate much? They are patenting ideas specific to their design--not OLED keyboards in general.
- kris33, on 01/03/2008, -4/+4Fine. You are obviously not an Apple hateboy at all.
- CyberSally, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2Maybe we'll finally see a refreshed line of Apple Cinema Displays that also acts as docks for the new sub-notebook?
- tdous, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1I don't. Cos I'm not leeching scum expecting the world to entertain me for free. Have a nice day.
- banmaster, on 01/04/2008, -2/+2Except they DIDN'T!
The optimus was already in working stage by the time apple stole the idea and lodged this patent! - tdous, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1Maybe, hayden dot evans, maybe.
- prevajanje, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0interesting, thanks for posting, would certainly buy the maximus one
- patrickloggins, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2The slide-in dock looks ***** cool to be honest. OLED keyboard? It's better IMO to just go to a single, changeable touch interface (a la iPhone, but better) rather than try to improve the already maxed-out keyboard.
- Ademan, on 01/04/2008, -1/+1Not anymore...
- sirbeta, on 01/03/2008, -6/+5I can't believe people are praising Apple for patenting this... The keyboard is a blatant ripoff, and the thing they're ripping off has been talked about for over a year. I'm not anti-Apple by any light (except for its crazy fanatical end users) - but this is just stupid...
- kris33, on 01/03/2008, -3/+2Selling it for tolerable prices some years from now will be an innovation.
- aliwilliams, on 01/03/2008, -4/+3Sounds logical to me.
- cawpin, on 01/03/2008, -4/+2Actually, that computer inside monitor thing may be a clever way to add tablet functionality, and on the cheap. You make nothing but the screen and use the horsepower of the existing product to run it. THAT would be something an Apple designer would come up with. Make one for Macbooks and maybe one for the 15" Macbook Pros. Maybe that's why they bought all those 13" screen several months ago.
- banmaster, on 01/03/2008, -12/+10So, this is apple 'innovating' again is it??
