- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah an Apple store with 5 floors.
I bet the elevator has 1 button though. - kimastergeorge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, it's the "Big Apple" store!
Wow, that's an uncharictaristicly good pun for me. - capajc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Um...Apple doesn't have that many products. Why do they need 5 stories to display them?
- snugsoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So Apple have managed to get it opened then? I read about this new store months ago and it was a bit cut and dry to get it opened in time for the holiday season as there was so much work that needed to be done.
- nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Full text:
December 18, 2005 -- Apple Computers has found itself a third Manhattan pod with a new lease opposite the Empire State Building at 21 W. 34th St.
The computer giant net-leased the entire, 30,000-foot five-story building from Jeff Sutton of Wharton Realty and his partner, SL Green Realty Trust, sources said.
Karen Bellantoni and Robert K. Futterman of his eponymous company are representing Apple, which is already open in SoHo and has installed a glass entry cube at the GM Building where it will soon open its doors.
The company also runs a store in the Staten Island Mall.
Apple previously ditched a deal in the Flatiron District. - mdweezer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you've been to a decent Apple store such as the one in SoHo you'd notice that there are many Genius Bars (now Concierge) as well as a full theater for presentations and movie showings (including nice seats!). Spike Lee was debuting a movie in the theater the last time I went to the SoHo store. So with all the arguments about no products, they will have no problem filling the space.
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hahaha. You should make a Frappr! Map of New York peepshows.
Oh, whats that...Frappr! you say....
www.frappr.com/applecomputer - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They don't just sell Apple products, but third party software and items at Apple stores. The Apple stores I've been in have carried loads of things.
And yes, before some overly defensive Mac hater says it, there are tons of Mac products and software out there. - dBass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1capajc said: "Um...Apple doesn't have that many products. Why do they need 5 stories to display them?"
Not right now. But soon you'll all see why 2006 won't be like ah, 2006. - jimmyM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think apple stores are awesome. i brought my screwy nano to the soho one and they gave me a new one on the spot, no questions asked.
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Apple Stores are the height of inneficiency. Seriously, a small-business computer store typically packs a dozen times what Apple does in an Apple store - in an area half the size"
Quite true, but that's on purpose. They're attempting to differentiate themselves from the usual electronics retail market. They appear less packed, less busy, less complex (by the products at least), so in turn, they're viewed as upscale, different, and classier than your average "Joe's Computar Barn" - peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Five floors of ipods seems a little excessive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does Apple even have enough products to fill a 30,000 sq. foot building, or will there just be rows and rows of iPods?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Instead of opening multiple stores in close proximity of each other, why don't Apple concentrate on trying to get stores in more states. I'm still waiting for one here in Maine.
- donnie_dark0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you've ever seen a really busy Apple store you know why there's so much empty space. I was recently at the Apple Store on Regent Street in London on a busy Thursday night (that's generally the busiest night of the week). Two floors, completely PACKED. Every G5, iMac, Powerbook, iBook, and even iPod, completely swarming with customers. The theatre area full up with people watching tutorials and whatnot, benches in the upper iPod area all taken, the genius bars both backed up significantly... Yeah, the space is necessary.
- pompom246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"yet again, ndm007 gets another story on frontpage, without it being that important."
silentauthority, you obviously have never tried to make an appointment in manhattan for the genius bar. even though it opens at 6am, by 9pm, they're booked till midnight. this is a MUCH NEEDED addition to NYC, especially considering how badly my ipod battery is dying after 3 months. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ndm007, you're a fountain of useless knowledge. :D ;)
- krahzee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I had to get away from the shiny whiteness before it was too late, or else I might have started wearing bohemian shoes and a black turtleneck with rolled up sleeves."
LMFAO! You felt like that too!!? I went in one today to buy an itunes gift card. It felt like a hipster version of the DMV. I went to counter with ITUNES gift cards on it, only to be told to go to another one because they just sold fix denominations ones there (What was printed on the card ie. $50) What an odd layout. Counters for each product, but if you want more than one then you have to pay in different places or go to the main counter and wait with the other people who are as confused as you. Wierd. - Electric_Sheep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure this Apple store won't just sell products, it'll be doing tutorials and professional courses.
- Sandkat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's so cute to see all the haters come out of the woodwork ^-^
- renfield33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the elevator only having one button comment is hilarious
- rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh. I think you mean 30,000 SQUARE feet... unless that building obliterates all previous height records.
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Five floors of Apple products = a geek's dream!!
And don't you hate it when people get Apple's full name wrong? It's Apple Computer, Inc.; not Apple Computers, Inc. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap! They do this after I leave NY. Stupid Apple....
- astral16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Um...Apple doesn't have that many products. Why do they need 5 stories to display them?

...Good Point. I don't know either. - Nibi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just in time for my moving back to my home town for grad school! And the intel Macs. Next year is gonna kick ass.
- hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple doesnt have that many products... YET.
But MWSF can change that! ;-) - optimusfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the flagship of the flagship stores.
- dementedcrabs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool :). I Bet the store will look sexy :P.
- smablue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes! Not far from where I live.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0anyone else thinking of reporting this as lame? i mean, i believe something is lame if you have to register for it. to "un-lame" a story, one could copy and paste the article in his blog while linking to the original story, therfor giving credit to the original copyright. by the way i was hoping for a picture of the store; and by "picture" i don't mean frappr map shot. maybe one's in the article, but i haven't seen it yet.
- astral16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah an Apple store with 5 floors.
I bet the elevator has 1 button though.
No...That's what the mighty elevator is for - ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0foxhoundadmin,
Im sure you can take pictures of things that DONT EXIST YET!!
If you took the time to read the article instead of bitching, you would see Apple have leased the buliding, and not opened or even started construction yet. - mcsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""Does Apple even have enough products to fill a 30,000 sq. foot building, or will there just be rows and rows of iPods?"
My sentiments exactly. It's going to be a huge waste of space, just like every other Apple 'boutique' I've witnessed.""
To you both:
Who the hell are you to judge how a company uses space? Its not like they're clearing a rainforest. this is manhattan, already crawling with excess and crowed stores
the apple store will be kickin in all of its minimal wonder - elcoqui121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple sets up so many machines and displays and little courses and informational stuff about their products that they do need the space. The one in downtown NYC gets so packed. The lines are ridiculous, the aisles for products are cramped. It's retarded how full it gets.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How long till they go bankrupt?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I somehow doubt this incredibly successful company would buy up five floors without a damn good idea of what to put in it. Just a hunch. Hard to imagine an Apple meeting and suddenly Jobs says, "Oh.. *****. Wait.. Did I just sign off on five floors? Wow, whoops! Totally kidding, guys!"
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*therefor
- CAPSLOCK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple has forgone function in favor of fashion.
- dance2die, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg just because it's happening in where i live..
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The one in Tokyo has five floors, and they're put to good use (granted, they don't have as much total area.) One floor is a dedicated presentation hall, and it's awesome. The one in Osaka is only two floors and a bit disappointing in comparison.
Also, who's to say that all of those floors are going to be publicly accessible? One floor for stock, one floor for offices, and one floor for a theater - that leaves you two floors for product display and the Genius Bar. Sounds pretty reasonable to me. - tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Went to an Apple store in a mall in Southern California, and it was very open and there was a lot of wasted space. It felt very Apple, kinda preppy and trendy, but like everyone else is saying, what the heck are they gonna do with all that space? I really hope someone in NY takes some pics and posts them.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0theyre really tearing thru that ipod money. douchebags.
- BinaryJay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Does Apple even have enough products to fill a 30,000 sq. foot building, or will there just be rows and rows of iPods?"
My sentiments exactly. It's going to be a huge waste of space, just like every other Apple 'boutique' I've witnessed. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple stores are all about being trendy and artsy. I went into the Apple Store in SoHo once, and I was almost scared away by all the socialites and good looking "hip" people. But there I stayed, to purchase a laptop, with my Tux T-Shirt and messy hair.
It was so sad. The employees didn't even know what "pwd" did in UNIX. Hell, some of them haven't ever even used UNIX before. I had to get away from the shiny whiteness before it was too late, or else I might have started wearing bohemian shoes and a black turtleneck with rolled up sleeves. - dvdcr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what will they sell? ipods, Macs, and... ??? 5 floors? waste of space....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple stores by me are hard to walk around in. They do have a lot of products in there, and I'm sure this is gonna be one of the coolest stores in NYC.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CAPSLOCK: They have done that since Jobs returned.
- Bitgod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Salespeople didn't know UNIX? OH NOES. Sheesh, some people, they're not there to support unix or know it's commands. The number of Apple tech support people that know what "pwd" is would be a very small number. They don't need to know.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And Jimmym, the peepshows—the ones that are left—are on 8th ave near 42nd St and the bus depot. :D
