- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23wait wasn't that a kool-aid commercial?
- jonecat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I think they are jumping the gun a little with no Photoshop or other pro apps out yet. I think they could stand to keep them around a little longer.
- blobzorz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Rest in Piece G5. We loved your commercial (the one with the guy flying through the walls. You all remember). Intel looks promising for Apple though, not slow like I would have thought.
- vanlandw, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I love my iMac and it's without question the best comptuer I've ever owned. RIP G5
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I only wish that the 64bit extensions were fully enabled for use, but that's for another time....oh well. Still have some more work to do to the OSX and the Intel Core (Solo and Duo) to support it fully.
Thank you G5, you've served us (not me, i'm still on a G3) well. - srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You can still order it in the Apple website store......
I don't understand. - paulius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Here's a link to the commercial:
http://smartdelivery.watchmactv.com/mactv/mp4/031-PowerMacG5Ad.mp4
No, it's not my site. I'm not "plugging" someone in.
And yeah, that was a commercial for the PowerMac G5. Not the iMac. The PowerMac G5 still lives and still performs extremely well. But I'm very excited for the next PowerMacs... I meant MacBox Pro :-P - alfranquiz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4seriously, I hate to be a grammar nazi, but is that the actual note they sent? Seems like someone ran it through babelfish. Hey maybe this can be the new 'All your base...' catchphrase
- Marlon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2May the discounting begin
With G5 prices dropping, maybe I can finally get Mom a Mac? - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree, although maybe it is meant as an incentive for developers to release universal apps more quickly.
Also, although I have seen numerous comparisons of the Core Duo and the G4 (i.e. MacBook Pro versus Powerbook) I have yet to see one of the Core Duo and the G5 (Intel iMac versus iMac G5). Am I missing something? - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's good. I am glad they are doing their best to convert to the full Intel line as quickly as they can.
- ANorton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well they haven't manufactured new iMac G5's since the Intel iMacs came out. That is why it is not a big deal since you can still order them on the apple store website.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That was a PowerMac G5 commercial, not iMac G5. But it was cool.
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4In other news, the Ford Fairmont is no longer being produced.
- bdrez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's only misleading because you didn't read the last two characters.
- d38as3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who didnt know this was coming, cmon.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5rest in peace you mean
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1...it was just expected.
¿did anyone dislike having a built-in camera on a computer always opened (but not 'turned on')? a "hello, big brother" camera is not something I want on a computer.
With that said, I will still buy it because of everything but the camera. I'm not that paranoid. - xbmcrules, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4who would buy one of those in the last couple of weeks!?
maybe a person who needs adobe suite or some ppc native app? - xenon221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the new Intel Macs run great. And I must admit, I was a skeptic. I've a MacBook Pro for a couple of weeks ago and it's an absolute dream. Even Apple's Pro apps like FinalCut run great. The future is looking very, very bright.
- Drgn547, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Speculation is: end of 4th quarter 2006 or beginning of 1st quarter 2007 according to a previous digg: http://digg.com/software/Don_t_fret,_Think_Secret_says_Creative_Suite_May_be_in_06_
- liquidjill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So here's my question.
How long until the full Adobe and Macromedia support kicks in for the Intel chips? I have a dated 12" G4 and it's really starting to get frustrating for designing. I would like to invest in a new Mac but i feel like I have to wait ages to feel good about what I'm buying. What's the general consensus on the wait time for full integration of support? A year? More? - bi0metric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its about time!
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My G5 is now out of date. I love him though, Larry treats me good.
- cfsporn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Darn. I liked the G5.
- degree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1complete sentences are the pwn dude.
- bgiese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can still run Adobe CS on the intel iMac. The software runs under Rosetta in emulation mode.
It will work fine, but you won't get the benefit of the faster processor.
The intel macs can run most software written for the PPC iMacs. - redivider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably, but how many people are really gonna want to buy a new G5 iMac *and* Photoshop between now and the time Adobe releases the Intel version? Most people that pay for Photoshop already have a G5 and if they were gonna buy one would most likely go for the full G5 tower (not the iMac) anyway. Or they'll be waiting for the Intel G5 in which case they'll be waiting anyway.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh well. I'm a long time Mac user and I couldn't care less what processor is in the box. I think the switch to Intel was a great idea and finally gets Apple out of that perpetually defensive mode they had to exist in with the PowerPC.
- CryoNine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's very sad, but inevitable. The G5 (and the entire PowerPC line) had a great running, but it really is time to move on - it was simply holding Apple back. I have been a devout Apple fan, but have never purchased one for home use simply because the majority of what I do at home is based around PCs. With the Intel switch, and the potential to actually USE Windows (and not a clone), I will certainly be purchasing a MacMini.
Salutes to the PowerPC and G5, you had a great run!
Welcome to Duel Core and the future of Apple. - bdrez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1mfalkon
Just because it's EOL, doesn't mean they won't stock parts for it. There are lots of iMac G5's still out there, with and without warranties. Apple will have replacement parts for years to come. - FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What's this about intel macs being slow, btw?!
I went to an apple store a few weeks ago and the macs were about twice as fast as my iMac G5... :-
Very nice... and about the professionals using Photoshop, etc on G5 iMacs because of the performance...
I think it should be noted that most "professionals" have probably bought the expensive G5 PowerMacs. - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3A good computer, but the Core Duo iMac is even better. Surprising they are able to discontinue it so fast, but they really have very little reason to keep it around. Apple has pulled off the transition very well so far.
- unagiguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The G5's were great workhorses in their time, but it's now time to usher in a new era of computing. I think that the intel systems will do well for Apple - at least once they all make it to their second revision. Rev. A problems seem to be a little too abundant for all the new systems (i.e. Crappy airport signals).
- Drgn547, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The G5 isn't going away quite yet...not in America at least. The G5 End of Life was announced in the UK stores, and if you visit the UK Apple online store...its gone: http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore/
Yet, the G5 remains on the American site, because it is still available. - ANorton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The 17" has been EOL for a long time now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The iMac G5 is arguably the BEST POWERPC PRODUCT ever produced. We bought twelve of them last year and our users LOVE THEM. And they run everything.
- markie1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I noticed Costco is selling them cheap with a 3 year warranty. Would be good to see some laptops in the discount stores, it can only help.
- veeto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've gotta say I've only had my iMac G5 since November and seems so bizarre its now obsolete. Still, its a fantastic machine and I'm glad I bought it when I did, but its a worry how many years Power PCs are going to be supported for. That's the "end of life" to really be concerned about.
- aliensporebomb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3At least the G5 towers are still available for a little while longer until
Conroe is available in quantity. In the meantime we can enjoy their
beastly prodigious CPU horsepower, unbelievable heat generation
and power consumption requirements and remember what was. - cocoamix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Last week I saw iMacG5's at Costco. They were a couple hundred bucks cheaper than normal price.
If you're in the market for one of these things, you might find some at your local Costco at a great price, but of course as with almost everything at Costco, there's no guarantee that they will have many left. - ACoolie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Hmm, it makes sense that Apple removed the G5 from the numbering system, but I never really thought of it.
- glialisback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They still have some to sell, but won't build any more. Is this so difficult to understand? This is like the 5th time this has been stated. Come on, they aren't going to throw them all away. They just won't be ordering any more builds from the factory with the G5 configuration.
- mfalkon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You're probably right, fluffyarmada, about most pros buying the PowerMacs, but we didnt. My wife runs a Publication Design business from home, and we went with an iMac G5 for budget and space reasons. PowerMac is definitely the better machine, but the iMac serves our purposes well. However, if it crapped out for some reason, and we're still under warranty, what does Apple plan to do? An Intel Mac is technically superior, but it does us no good without Adobe CS. Guess they'd have to give us a PowerMac :)
- eMacizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0and....?
- veeto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've gotta say I've only had my iMac G5 since November and seems so bizarre its now obsolete. - mfalkon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Thanx, bdrez. Should've realized that before my rant. That's how it was for discontinued cell phones when I worked in that industry as well.
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1hmm.. missed that one. lol
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1What about the 17"?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1You could just post a story that said 'blee blah blee bloo Apple Computers' and people wouldn't care. You don't even need a story. Most losers here look for any reason whatsoever to start a flame fest about Apple.
