- marcushe, on 07/23/2008, -7/+51Um, they already are under $1000. MacBooks with the student discount start at $999.
- johnomaz, on 07/23/2008, -2/+37Lemme guess...$999
- sockpuppets, on 07/23/2008, -0/+32.99
- kipmartin, on 07/23/2008, -1/+17Well, whatever you get, make sure it has a spell checker.
- brkhobowriter, on 07/23/2008, -6/+20I would buy a Lenovo Thinkpad.
- howdareyou, on 07/23/2008, -3/+17I'd like to introduce you to my block list.
rayburn76, block list; block list, rayburn76. - ileftfark, on 07/23/2008, -2/+14Awesome. You can use that money to upgrade your RAM!
- wisedude, on 07/23/2008, -7/+19for back to school? Not likely unless they hurry it up FAST. This is really killing me. I've always been a PC user, and am about to start college. I'd love to give a Macbook Pro a try, but since it's using a several year old design, I'm only switching if they update it. Don't they realize that they could make me and MANY more college students customers if they get this out in the next month? If not, I'm just sticking with a PC. At least I'll get good value that way
- tnoy, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9RAM from another store, the Apple RAM will still cost you an extra kidney.
- SugarCoatedSalt, on 07/23/2008, -5/+14$1, boy you sure showed us wrong.
- wildsnake, on 07/23/2008, -7/+16What's up with people spamming always Apple news. Use the ***** filter!
- P373Y, on 07/23/2008, -0/+9everyone report this guy
- brkhobowriter, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10And you must be a Liberal Arts major.
- banmaster, on 07/23/2008, -3/+11And your first born child, one of them will have a pancreas Steve can use.
- quomen, on 07/23/2008, -2/+10I swear, I swear I saw this headline last night.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 07/23/2008, -0/+7To add to what Ozid said, don't write off a Mac design that is a little old. Last year, I had to spend a month away on a business trip. My laptop is a 2004 PowerBook (17", G4). It was fine.
Mac software developers seem to care more about supporting older machines that PC software developers do. New software can take advantage of newer machines, but the developers usually doing a good job of making it work well on older machines.
I'd love a new MacBook Pro, but I just can't justify it because my PowerBook still works so well. - Kajico, on 07/23/2008, -3/+10Ugh, I'm an Apple user, but I got to say enough is enough with all these speculation stories. Most Apple fans will already be reading this from Macrumors.
- ozid, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8The MBP, despite being quite old (design wise) is still a HOT computer. And now you get a free ipod touch with purchase if you are a student.
I'd say now is a great time to buy. And build quality is right there with Lenovo. - tacojohn48, on 07/23/2008, -1/+8Currently the white MacBook is $1199 for students; actually at UTK it is on sell for $1149. So this is only a $150 price drop unless specs go up. Also right now you can wait until the tax-free holiday and save a $100 in taxes. Also it comes with an ipod touch free after rebate. It isn't a bad deal.
- blcarmadillo, on 07/24/2008, -0/+4I just bought a Thinkpad X61 and am loving it. Everyone needs to quit winning about Vista. In my experience so far it has worked perfectly for me. Also, I'm not a business or liberal arts major... I'm going into engineering at U of Michigan.
- bluntwrap, on 07/23/2008, -4/+8dropping them to 999 would not be enough to get me to buy one it would have to be like 799-899 to find it a big deal...
- datdamonfoo, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5Yah...because people should base their computer-buying decision on the aesthetics of the computer rather than the functionality and cost. And if you're an intelligent computer user, you don't have to worry about viruses (or VIRUS'S, as you so eloquently put it).
- dthebear, on 07/23/2008, -3/+7you buy mac because it makes you look rich/cool? that's lame and pitiful.
people buy mac because its good design and function - rowlodge, on 07/23/2008, -1/+5would rather have any pro version under a thousand, (with screen)
- migshark, on 07/23/2008, -2/+6Nooooooooo! My Eee PC is becoming outmoded already!
- tiuk, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4I'd be in for one if they dropped the price.
- spitsnaugle, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3colleges, a tech school may work however.
- Qrange, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Thanks for providing us with that douchebag.
or so you can read it:
Th@nks for pr0v!d!ng us w!th th@t d0u(h3b@9. - Galaxylander, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5As will any OEM RAM, hell Dell's and Gateway's RAM is more expensive then Apple's.
- redwallhp, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3A Mac Pro is an $8000 computer...and you want it for under $1k with a monitor? Do you have any idea what's under the hood of that computer? The two quad-core processors are probably $1500 of the price tag...
- inactive, on 07/23/2008, -2/+5Thinkpad tablets are pretty cheap nowadays as well. I really could've used a tablet PC while in college. So, if you're buying a PC for college, give tablets a serious consideration.
- LeeSoong, on 07/24/2008, -0/+3The new Apple Mac Portfolio is coming...
The entry level 9" wide screen half sized Mac Portfolio with Apple's new Ultra low power custom designed chip set will be available
starting at $ 499.
Apple is responding to the overwhelming success of sub-notebooks such as the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC:
http://h40059.www4.hp.com/hp2133/
The new Apple Mac Portfolio will have the power needed for homework / web / email - in half the size of an existing Mac Book, 16 GB to 64 GB flash based hard drive, 1 GB or 2 GB of RAM and 8 hours of battery life, built in camera, WiFi, BlueTooth, and VGA/HDMI output, and SD flash drive slot.
It will be fully compatible with the external DVD drive currently offered for the MacBook Air.
The Mac Portfolio fills the existing product gap between a regular Mac Book and the Mac Book air...
The newest innovation will be a full multi-touch 2nd LCD virtual keyboard panel instead of a keyboard, using the same sensing technology found in the iphone and ipod touch.
The virtual keyboard can display the full range of languages and special characters available for the iPhone.
This Mac Portfolio is slated for Spring 2009, and will become a hot seller for education because of it's low price, small size, and ability to easily display multiple languages, such as Japanese and Chinese keyboards. - Kyrato, on 07/23/2008, -0/+3Go to Newegg.com, get 4 GB of DDR2 for 98$ its not that hard.
- tnoy, on 07/23/2008, -1/+4The base Macbook with a 1.8GHz C2D and a 80GB drive would knock at least $200 off the top.
Even more if Apple were willing to accept a lower profit margin on the thing. - dn11, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2or less.... around half that price in fact. i just got 4gb for $55 after rebate
- redwallhp, on 07/24/2008, -1/+3Your eee PC was an outdated paperweight before you bought it. Unless you have a really good desktop and only use a laptop for light stuff, get a real computer. :P
- JephirDromulus, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Gas surcharge extra.
- dn11, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2putting RAM in my MacBook "voids the warranty" huh? wow that's news to me considering there is a detailed digram inside the battery compartment showing the end user exactly how to do it.
- Colindean, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4It still doesn't have discrete graphics, so it's useless to me.
- deadbaby, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4Sure but then you have to use Windows. People pay more for Macs so they can run OSX.
- damnyooneek, on 07/23/2008, -2/+4you probably have a 2" penis and thinks it does everything an 8" does too.
- xoineg, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2get a PC then...At walmart :D
- zdiggler, on 07/23/2008, -7/+9Colleges are flooded with Mac and iPod now days.. get a PC and be different!
- P3NGUIN8, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2windows does everything i need it to... the only reason i'd wanna mac is for final cut, the no virus feature, and thats it, i kinda like the look of osx
- Gorgonzola44, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2This is already getting old.
- kipmartin, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2effluent? as in waste or sewage? thats nasty!
- mleh, on 07/24/2008, -0/+2I'll notify apple that bluntwrap @ digg refuses to buy one until they drastically lower their profit margin. I'm sure The Steev will get right on it.
- Kyrato, on 07/23/2008, -1/+3Malware makers love em because its easier to make a virus for an OS on non-proprietary hardware.
Mac Has the advantage of selecting the hardware they want and thus are able to make it as secure as they can, if OSX became multi-platform then they would have more problems with hardware and with Malware.
But they still would be more secure than the pre-Vista64bit windows platform since they are based on Darwin Unix.
Also, the design is spectacular on macs, but I for one would like to see a real gaming mac, one desktop and one laptop. The laptop could be bulky, at least it would be more durable.
And have you ever tried to take apart a mac laptop? like 80 screws!! - carve, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Hmmm...talking of chucking the optical drive, eh? I'm not sure I like that idea, but here is an idea I would LOVE to see. Instead of an optical drive, put in a universal bay. In the bay, you could swap out optical drives, hard drives, ipod docks, or even a second battery. Just tailor it for your needs of the day. If you want a cheap bare-bones machine, leave it empty. THAT, would be flexible.
- Dalrek, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2On top of the $100 in taxes, you might also be able to still get the student discount. I got $100 off my MacBook for attending a college, and that puts the lowest end MacBook at $999 before tax.
