- Kamujin, on 07/17/2009, -6/+23I am not sure what time frame you are using for your consideration, but APPL stock peaked at over $200 in December of 2007. It reach a low of roughly $80 in January 2009.
It's current price of roughly $150 tells me that long term share holders are still worse off for owning the stock than they were 1.5 years ago.
For that reason, I challenge your statement that "Apple stock has doubled in this economy" without further qualification. - TexMexRex, on 07/17/2009, -1/+18I'm starting to think PC users don't like Apple.
- serif69, on 07/17/2009, -3/+19That's nice that you have an opinion about the market share of a company, something that is a solid fact. Do you work on Wall Street, by any chance?
- MacParrot, on 07/17/2009, -5/+20Blah blah, neither has the real numbers and quite frankly it really doesn't mean much. Apple is doing just fine especially considering their higher price in this economy.
- xsecretfiles, on 07/17/2009, -8/+22Me
- cyberdork, on 07/17/2009, -0/+11Dude, you're so 1990s. Nobody except for gamers are assembling their own PCs anymore.
- bigthree, on 07/17/2009, -14/+22Apple stock has doubled in this economy -- i think they are ok
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -7/+14Please tell me where you can get a PC with similar specs as the MacBook Pro for the $1,199 it starts at.
Note: build quality IS a specification, although you can't assign a number to it. While you're at it, show me a laptop at ANY price built like the $1,199 MacBook Pro. - outofboxin, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6I have seen at many places they 're doing pretty fine but yes they 're not untouched by recession.
- MScrip, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7And the huge glass multi-touch trackpad. And the excellent software included with every Mac. And OSX.
I agree... a $1199 Macbook Pro is a great machine for the price.
Unfortunately... most people are drive by the bottom dollar... so Lauren's $699 17" AMD laptop is a big seller :( - judicar, on 07/17/2009, -4/+10me
- cmf2, on 07/17/2009, -6/+12Mac sales have proven to be more resilient than a lot of other computer manufacturers based on previous sales results. We will see if that is still true, but I do know the Apple Store near me is packed. If market share is down, it would be because of netbooks, a market that Apple doesn't even want to be in. I know your comment is just a troll, since macs don't cost $1000 more, but oh well.
- r00fus, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6Mscrip,
Dugg for the trackpad. It not only feels smooth, it is more accurate than any other trackpad I've ever had.
It's the first one where I've enabled touch-to-click, and have had zero problems. I can't even say that about previous apple laptops.
Don't get me started on the quality of my netbook trackpad. - judicar, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5I bought in in Dec '08 for roughly $85 and sold a few days ago for $143 ... that's pretty damn.
- TexMexRex, on 07/17/2009, -2/+7What do you expect Apple to say in their ads?
Give me an example of a MS ad where they say: "Jesus there's alot of viruses out there", or a Dell add where they say: "another black plastic depressing looking machine."
Apple is no more smug than any other company. - MacParrot, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6The part that cracks me up is that always claimed they bought them and then got rid of them. All usually within a 2 week period. Guess they weren't quite smart enough to know what they wanted when they shelled out those big bucks for a computer.
- zip22, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5I'm guessing by 'in this economy', bigthree means since the huge drop that put them at the low. since then, they have nearly doubled as your numbers pointed out. from a year and a half ago, aapl is down 13%, much better than the DOW(-30%), S&P 500(-33%), and Nasdaq(-23%)

Signed,
Real Grammar-Nazi - TheUngod, on 07/17/2009, -2/+6Or, you could look at it another way and say PCs last longer since you can upgrade and fix them on your own.
- zip22, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4they are included. if you read the article, that is why acer has jumped so significantly.
- WestEast, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5The you shouldn't be allowed computers period, Why is it, only on Digg, their are poeple who have owned a "couple" of Macs at some point and for a fact both have been rubbish and both have broken and that Apples usual decent customer service was "rubbish", the ***** on this place is really getting noticeable.
- skidooer, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5Where do you draw the line?
Your modern-day cell phone is just as much of a computer as any Netbook. The iPhone runs OS X, and the G1 and Pre both run Linux.
The point TheUngod was making is that there is not a single market. There are many different markets, with many different criteria. So, saying something like Windows has 80% market-share is a meaningless statement, without also stating the exact criteria used to come up with those numbers. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4Window and Linux are just a pain in the ass to use. I had a family reunion and every Mac connected to the wireless network faultlessly. The Dell's and HP machines had trouble everyday. You can talk price, but I want my computer to works. That does not happen regularly with PC or Linux. That's why corporations need huge IT staffs. It's not the case with Mac's.
Sorry,it's the facts - judicar, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4It was down in mid 80's in Dec and is now up to 150, that's pretty close to doubling in this economy, regardless it's doing better than everyone else no matter what timeframe you look at.

Apple +66%
HP +5%
Dell +16%
Toshiba -19%
MS +21%
Google +41% - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4Poor service and low value. That's what happens when you compete on price and not value. It maybe the best line up for Dell but the products can not compare to Apple
- MScrip, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3>> "Or, you could look at it another way and say PCs last longer since you can upgrade and fix them on your own."
Update: Most people can't do that. They would have to PAY someone to add more RAM and a bigger hard drive.
And last time I checked... you can add more RAM and a bigger hard drive to a Mac too.
Sure... you can add a better video card to a *desktop* PC... but desktops aren't really a top seller anymore... and most consumers don't need a better video card anyway.
So where are we now? - WestEast, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Shares are up, bottom line, they are making money and doing fine.
- cyberdork, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3The stock hasn't "doubled in this economy".
However, if he is referring to the recession which is considered to have started in October 2007, then Apple is doing very well compared to their competitors and the market in general:
http://tinyurl.com/l7g7mx
Damn, I'm glad I'm not a Dell shareholder. - zip22, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3obviously, this is time frame dependent, but i couldn't find a reference point where apple wasn't doing better now than google or microsoft percentage wise.
http://www.google.com/finance?chdnp=1&chdd=1&a ... - MScrip, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3But... Dell computers are like candy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpptFz8OwcQ - MacParrot, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4And who would know what *****/bi-sexuals would want more than you!
- MtheoryX, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2"Also, who's to say that the iPhone isn't being functionally used as a notebook?"
Anyone who's used an iPhone, maybe? - fahrvergnuugen, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Well, here's some reference:

Zing! - DanielPhermous, on 07/18/2009, -1/+3Apple rarely invents but they do perfect. Stepping back a few decades, remember that every computer now uses the UI that Apple refined for the Mac. That's how good it was and how much effort went into getting it right. Xerox did it first but you'd barely recognise any of the feature if you tried using it. An original Mac, though, you could pick up and know exactly how it all works.
They put the same care and effort into the iPhone UI, which is why Palm copied it and why the iPhone sells even without the features you tout. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1They are all clueless. Everything Apple makes, sells. It's about value not pricing. If so, GM, Ford and Chrysler would be doing better.
- MacParrot, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2The one component left untouched from any Mac I buy is Apple's terrible mice.
- jggube, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1Yep.
- MacParrot, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2I thought it was damn near impossible to make South Florida residents looks any dumber but you have lowered the bar to a new level. It's people like you that make me glad I left
- jggube, on 07/17/2009, -27/+28IMO it's down. In a recession, who can afford to spend an extra thousand dollars on a computer when they can use a Windows/Linux based PC?
- ulmanor, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Hear, hear!
- KnightWhoSaysNi, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2@TheUngod:
And you can sell a used iMac on eBay for a substantial % of its original value and buy a new one.
Try that with a PC. - MScrip, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Touch sensitive surfaces are NOT buttons.
Any mouse that you have to lift your finger off the "button" before you put it back down to click is a horrible mouse.
/Mighty Mouse sucks - ohreilly, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Speaking from a non-US perspective, the iPhone doesn't appear to be selling brilliantly at all. I know of precisely one iPhone owner, but he appears to have more money than sense and also has the latest Blackberry. Everyone else still appears to be buying cheaper phones with more features and are available on more networks (not just one network with abysmal 3G coverage)
It shows when I know a number of iPod Touch owners, who all own a Nokia/Blackberry/HTC device. Shame Apple haven't "perfected" bluetooth dialup so that they can use their phones to get onto the internet without having to use wi-fi. - MtheoryX, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1For one, that stereotype is completely incorrect.
For two, if it were correct, so ***** what? You got some kind of problem with homosexuals and bisexuals? - jwdav, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Almost all of the market share studies numbers are based on units sold. By that standard, at the fruit stand, cherries are kicking watermelon ass.
The only numbers that really matter are gross revenue and net profit. I'd be a lot more interested to see market share by revenue than by units. - mrBitch, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1RE: " ..
