That would get really annoying every time you wanted change the disk - Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -8/+75This sounds like a pain in the ass when installing things such as WoW with it's 5 CDs.
I don't see what's wrong with the current slot-loading drives. - cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -14/+70I've used cd or dvd no more than maybe 4 times since i've had my Notebook so i don't think it would be much of a hassle now in days where most media in your computer is downloaded from the internet or a local network
- AustinLucas, on 10/12/2007, -9/+59this is ridiculous
- jsreid, on 10/12/2007, -16/+57this just takes apples ease of use down a notch.
- Blizaine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42I like the iris door idea:
http://images.appleinsider.com/patent-odd-070125-5.jpg - rtini, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41Japanese notebooks have been doing this for quite a while, only on top instead of on the bottom:

http://www.dynamism.com/y5/main.shtml - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40I'm sorry, but if it means my Macbook being just a few millimetres thicker, I'll take the side slot-loading drive.
- csaribay, on 10/12/2007, -7/+43http://duggmirror.com
- mcfly1204, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Yeah, that's definately going to be the end of the world there.
- timyjl, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Putting it in and out of backpacks filled with text books seems like it would break the drive too easily.
- OandA, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28This is really stupid. I don't think steve jobs would ever allow this to happen. Its most likely an idea that everyone at first thought was a great solution and as they continued to work wiht it they realized how stupid it was.
Highly doubt this will ever see the light of day. Its contrary to the Mac user expierience. And like I said its just plain stupid. - pap3rw8, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29The only issue with this is that Apple laptops go to sleep when you shut the lid, but I'm sure they'll find a way to avoid that if they actually implement this.
- ClassicJBC, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I think this is the perfect litmus test to find out who are Apple fanboys. If you try to defend this gross error of usability, then yes, you are a bona fide fanboy. I may not change out disks all the time, but usually when I do, it's one right after the other (e.g., ripping new CDs, installing multi-volume software, burning CDs, etc.). I really don't think Apple would ever make this mistake.
- kilworth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Or just ***** replace the digg in your adressbar with duggmirror and hit enter..
- aptmunich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20That's the old Titanium Powerbook design in the schematics, I bet this is one of those patents they never actually used.
Besides - July 2005 is hardly a "recent" patent.
Besides, Apple would never give up the slot loading design for a PS-1 looking lid design... - KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Or you could have just put "duggmirror.com" in your comment and cicked your own link.
- KerrAvon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18"I like the iris door idea"
But to prevent unauthorized access to the drive you would need a GDO. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19It's for an ultra-portable, which they have about 6 different version of the design. My guess is if they ever did implement this the notebook would be so small that it would be the only possibility to have a built-in optical drive. And fool knows that design is very important to Apple, they wouldn't dare doing this if it wasn't a necessity.
- Dunadan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22"And it waists even more space"
Waists? I can't decide if that was a dumb mistake, or a clever reference to another thing most people wish they had smaller. - Youngster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17How about making the keyboard pop up and the putting the cd drive under there? Same idea, but no flipping it over
- 35chililights, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18i have to close the lid, or awkwardly hold the laptop upside down and open when searching through ill-labeled disks for that one file??
i will take my .02 inches back please.
or i will open up a furniture company, market and sell the iTable, with a hole in the top you place your laptop over so you can easily get your movies in and out. brilliant!! - FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I love how an article about a two year old patent application that nobody has ever seen evidence of the company actually doing something about becomes a present tense, 'this-is-happening' article title.
"Apple makes..." ????
how about
"Apple once sorta thought of the idea but never made..." - joe90210, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22this is the worst idea I have ever heard
- Michalson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16That's exactly what I thought of, though I was thinking of several North America sold "under keyboard"/"under wrist pad" top loading optical drives. Specially some of the *first* notebooks to have optical drives back in the 90s had the top loading design. Then again, never doubt Job's ability to take something that's been around forever and present it as some fantastic Apple exclusive innovation.
- xplodeme, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Well, taking 10-20 seconds to load a CD, including the hassle of turning the computer upside down isn't something I expected from apple.
Where's the usability on that thing? O_O - danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13This seams like it would work much better for a tablet for factor then a traditional laptop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I don't like it, Easy access is a big thing for me. If I want to put a cd in the drive I like to be able to stick it in there... I don't want to have to move my notebook from where it is...
- drewhenson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13why not put the drive under the keyboard? press a button, keyboard pops up, insert disc underneath, close keyboard. How often do you open the CD/DVD drive while typing?
- MScrip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Just go to duggmirror.com and find the link yourself... you don't have wait for someone to post the link.
I did, and it works! - mysticmcj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I'm sure they will look at this... Keep in mind one of the selling points of the mac laptop line in later years has been that there's nothing to break off, hence the slot load optical drive and the magnetic power cord.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Gotta love it, someone who isn't afraid to show their obvious biases in their "evaluation" :p
- HelloNavi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16Click the duggmirror jackass.
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7javascript:window.location.href=window.location.href.replace('digg', 'duggmirror');
Put it as a shortcut on your links toolbar (unless you have JS disabled). - chuckpenzone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is dumb and un-apple like. It's also from 2005 and they probably just patented it because they thought of it.
Let's put the USB ports on the bottom too. - cracker42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Could it be that Apple just thought this was something they could patent so they just applied for one? Am I wrong or don't companies do that sort of thing a lot nowadays. There's no proof that they're actually trying to implement this.
- daines88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ Youngster - Pop-up keyboard wouldn't work because the CD is bigger than the keyboard so you would need hinge room under the keyboard for the CD to go into in order to get the keyboard to "close", which would make the MacBook thicker.
http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/9454/dsc50476zc.jpg - nerditup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How would this save space? If you put it on the bottom, couldn't you just put it on the bottom, in the corner and then have it side loading the way it is? Just seems like a thinner optical drive.
- tfedullo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7it is just a patent... an idea they thought of, that could save room, but won't be easy to use, just because u get a patent doesn't mean you will use it, so just calm down people
- crysys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Or, just remove the optical drive entirely. Put it in it's own slim housing and include it with the laptop. Seeing as the average person uses the drive only occasionally, you could save a ton of room this way. I really wouldn't mind carrying a small slot loaded USB drive in the bag for the occasions when I need it, it'll share a pocket with the full size mouse I use because I can't stand touch pads for anything more than quick, intermittent use.
- Diganta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6For an ultra portable laptop. I think the way to go is flash based HDD and external DVD/CD-ROM for a 12" version.
Majority of the time people don't need the DVD/CD-ROM drive. Perhaps in the first week or two when one needs to
load all that software on your new system. Otherwise people use Jumpdrives to transfer data. I'd keep the external
USB 2 or FW optical drive in my office or my home. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you mean "Jump to conclusions" floor mat?
- LaughingMan11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm skeptical about how this patent will apply to new MacBooks. It looks like the diagrams for this are based off of a circa 2001 Titanium Powerbook G4.
I think eventually with technologies like UWB and wireless USB we'll move away from internal drives entirely. Spinning components... how last century. - knuckles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ ClassicJBC
I'll bite. I'm a fanboy, but not an extremist. I'm also a UI designer and think this is a fairly smart approach. After reading the article I sat back and thought about my own usage of the DVD player on my own laptop, and the result was surprising. I haven't used the CD/DVD drive in at least 3 days, and when I do use it it's to install something or burn a quick backup. In the grand scheme of things it probably gets 2% of my love and attention at any point during the week. Obviously Apple has done studies and likely found the same results. So for something that only gets 2% of anyones attention can easily be put in a location that isn't used so often that it *is* inconvenient.
And who's to say they'll actully do it, it's just a patent. - GodSend, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Under the keyboard would be better. But I am not sure it would be any thinner.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Considering how many apple fans visit digg, you all are not being very imaginative. Apple's a lot smarter than to use diagrams of the actual device on their patent filings. And they're definitely not stupid enough to expect people to close their notebook and flip it over to insert a cd.
It's for an ULTRA-PORTABLE computer, not a macbook. You've seen the iPhone. You've see Apple's touch screen technology. A back-loading cd makes perfect sense for a computer that you don't necessarily use lying flat on your desk. A computer that flips around easily.
You are witnessing the beginnings of the Tablet Mac. - Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I like that idea, split the keyboard into 2 sections, and allow one side to pop open on a spring, housing the cd drive underneath. it'd be kinda like the samsung and panasonic's linked above, but take up less weird space.
- GodofPoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This was done with the PS2 to PS2 slim.
same idea. truly. - qwickone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4if you want an ultra portable, then it's more likely that you move it frequently and this would not be an issue for you. if youre using a docked computer, being ultra-slim is probably not a priority for you and you wouldnt buy this one anyway.
