- LMN8R, on 11/12/2009, -5/+20I'm curious how many Apple fans are aware of what Windows 7 does in terms of handwriting input:
http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/04/23/ink-in ...
Apple has an extremely long way to go even if they want to equal the functionality in this space. - PlumCantaloupe, on 11/12/2009, -0/+9I, as much as I love Apple products, have to agree. I cannot say how great Windows 7 handwriting recognition is (though i should try it having a Cintiq and Win7 on bootcamp); but inkwell is pretty brutal. My printing doesn't even lend itself well to great accuracy. I really want to love it so I have to use the keyboard less when using the Cintiq; but at this point it is more novelty. Fortunately one day a software update should fix it! :D
- Shitokki, on 11/12/2009, -3/+12Improvements are always good.
- RentalCanoe, on 11/12/2009, -1/+10Kinda what the word means.
- L0NER, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8please, please, please be wacom based!
- kevinmoore, on 11/12/2009, -2/+9If this rumored tablet machine has pen functionality like Wacom's Cintiq, I will buy one the day it comes out.
- Kazbaeden, on 11/12/2009, -3/+10Um, have you used inkwell? It's barely usable. For starters, it handles printing marginally well, but if your handwriting is sloppy or cursive, or any combination of the two, you're out of luck. Further, there's no learning and no training, so it doesn't get any better than that.
Handwriting recognition in windows 7 is probably 90% accurate out of the box, with printing or cursive. You can train it, and it learns from corrections, so over time accuracy improves. You can then upload your corrections and Microsoft uses them to improve their recognition engine. It's very near 100% accurate on my tablet. - sandman979, on 11/12/2009, -1/+7I guess somebody got scared by MS Courier...
- pathy, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5I'm having similar feelings.
I'm really hoping that it doesn't end up as being something like a grown up iPhone with handwriting support.
I'd love it if Apple made a tablet with decent specs and a 'real' OS, as it were.
As much as I avoid Apple products, they do make beautiful machines and have a knack for inspiring other manufacturers to actually get off their ass and make decent stuff. Microsoft might even hash out the Courier more. - superkendall, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4If they do make a tablet (and I am still dubious) it would make sense to allow both touch and pen input - and even mouse too.
- M4rx15t, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4Uhh... pretty sure this has something to do with the Point of Sale devices they use in their stores, they currently use Windows CE and I am sure that is a sore point for them.
- drouk1556, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4Because they're quality and remarkably not crappy.
You get what you pay for. - ironcrotch, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4yes because Apple saw the videos of Courier a couple months ago and all of a sudden decided to start developing their own Tablet.
- BabySinister, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3of course they are looking into this. apple knows just as anybody else that fingers are fun for funny apps, but you need a stylus to work accurately for business. with that tablet coming up apple is obviously aiming at the graphic design market (which coincidentally is also a huge market for them) so they are well aware they need to come up with a stylus system.
good going apple improve it please, then please dont lock all your inventions down so the rest of the world benefits also. - bboyjkang, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2That "Math Input Panel" is impressive
It would be great if this program could be brought to teachers as soon as possible
I'd like to see a speed comparison between someone who handwrites, and someone who has mastered LaTeX - staticneuron, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2Well he did put an "and" in there.
- MacParrot, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3Once Apple's immediate future was no longer in jeopardy, most of us stopped saying the things we are thought to say all the time. What was the point? Neither Apple or Microsoft were going to go out of business. People who truly prefer one platform or the other aren't going to switch so why waste the time and energy trying to convince them?
- sdipaola, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2finally - some sanity - big fat fingers can only do so much.
- phogasmic, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3Did you say Gateway, your credibility on quality is nil.
- ducttape36, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2vista has top notch handwriting recognition, I've since upgraded to windows 7 but havent had time to really test it. though im sure it is just as good if not better.. I have chicken scratch handwriting and it has learned to read it better than I can. I will now use my pen input to show you my chicken scratch handwriting.

OK- apparently windows 7 converts it into nice handwriting in the input panel as I am writing it, so I had to write it again in OneNote so you get an idea of how bad my handwriting is, but you get the point. - jaschwan, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1not if i used my fingernail..
- Marlic, on 11/12/2009, -3/+4HOT! I am saving $$ for this tablet already!
- jshhmr, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1It's Apple, you're going to need $$$$
- NSResponder, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2This patent application is just for the existing "Ink" technology that's been in Mac OS X for several years.
-jcr - Fduch, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1Yes, I did. I have one. I think it's the best notebook for $1000 I could get the last year.
And I have Macbook. The trackpad broke after three months even though I never used it (it started to simulate mouse clicks. Even after I turned it off in system options.). The whole thing becomes damn hot. The screen is glossy and the colors are bad (you know what a calibrator is, don't you). The battery as slightly bloated now. I really worry this thing is going to blow up soon like many other macbooks and iPhones did. - The2DQuartet, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1It certainly seems to be true. US patent # 7564995: "Method and apparatus for acquiring and organizing ink information in pen-aware computer systems"

- jaschwan, on 11/12/2009, -1/+1Why don't they just develop the technology to allow me to use my pointer finger as a stylus?
- phogasmic, on 11/12/2009, -2/+2Innovation is improvement of existing ideas not necessarily something completely new.
- specialK16, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2>implying I'm virgin.
- matt.rubin, on 11/12/2009, -1/+1if your writing looks like your wrote like your finger... you must have the hand writing of a retard.
- sandman979, on 11/12/2009, -2/+2Haha... you fanbois are so easy to mess up with. Let me remind you we're not talking about a relative of yours that you have to defend. It's just a computer.
- Orbital101, on 11/12/2009, -6/+5Ever notice how anti-Apple guys spend more effort quoting stuff Mac users say than Mac users spend actually saying it?
- eriku16, on 11/17/2009, -0/+0Only if Job's own a controlling interest in Wacom will you be seeing it. NIH policies are enforce. ;)
- Fduch, on 11/12/2009, -3/+2Just buy a real tablet like Gateway C-143XL which comes with Wacom pen and software.
Why buy the overpriced and crappy Apple products if you want quality? - superkendall, on 11/12/2009, -6/+4Apple doesn't have as much catching up to do as you seem to think. OS X has had some built in handwriting recognition for quite some time, it's simply that there are few ways to make use of it currently...
- Fduch, on 11/12/2009, -3/+1Just buy a real tablet like Gateway C-143XL which comes Wacom pen and software.

YES, APPLE IS ALWAYS INNOVATING AND DOING THINGS NO ONE HAS EVER DONE BEFORE.
