- pudiggy, on 10/10/2007, -25/+109Only in the Mac-verse does 28% of people saying they MIGHT buy something make it the "standard".
- bigBadOwl, on 10/10/2007, -26/+96I was surprised to find several people I know have bought Macs in the last 2 weeks. The platform is becoming ever increasingly popular.
- gibsonic, on 10/10/2007, -33/+98I just bought an Acer laptop with Windows Vista for the wife from Office Max. Hrm. I must be in that "minority" of 72% that are NOT buying Mac's.
- Wildren, on 10/10/2007, -29/+91I just bought a MacBook Pro myself, and I can clearly see why these statistics are true ;)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -24/+59Yeah. This article isn't biased, or anything. Base your statements on sales numbers, not some percentage of people who haven't even bought anything yet. I could say 'Why yes, I'd like to buy a Maserati' but that doesn't mean I will.
- ontain, on 10/10/2007, -12/+43how is less than 30% a de facto standard?
it would be just a huge increase if it actually bares out. - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31That shows your ignorance; de facto is English through Latin, we borrowed it into the language and it will be a part of the language for a long time to come (thanks in part to the legal code, and our own language's heritage as being Latin-derived). Roughly speaking it means "default", but depending on context it can mean "in practice", and if literally translated, "in fact". Let's try it out: a de facto standard is one that is implemented because "everyone else is doing it", it's the default position (an example of a de facto standard would be using the left mouse button to "click", or putting the toolbar at the top of the window rather than the side or bottom).
- cjwl, on 10/10/2007, -12/+39What surprises me is people I know who buy them to run Windows exclusively.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -9/+33This just in: Sony says Sony products are on the rise (and good for ur health).
- knucklebusted, on 10/10/2007, -16/+40Great! Maybe the virus writers will finally make something for the Mac and leave the PC alone for a while.
- davidrools, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24I know LOTS of people. Almost ALL of them use computers.
- nicc, on 10/10/2007, -15/+36I work in IT. I know LOTS of people who are heavily into IT. about half of them have a Mac.
- cmer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24I think these numbers are driven by the huge disappointment in Vista. I personally switched to Mac when I realized that Vista was not the upgrade we were all expecting.
- commiecat, on 10/10/2007, -5/+25Pussy. MacBook = 5lbs, MacBook Pro = 5.5lbs, Dell XPS M1330 < 4lbs.
Like always, computers are configurable. I'm not an Apple guru but I'm sure you can get a lighter Mac if you want (can you?) -- and Dell and other manufacturers offer lightweight solutions as well. Don't imply that Macs are light and Dells are "behemoths" just because your laptop is old or you chose a heavier model. - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+22I work in multimedia product design and consulting. I know LOTS of people who are heavily into Multimedia design and consulting. I know three guys who use PCs and only one of them has Windows.
Depending on where you are in the world, you'll see all kinds of things. Creative types use Macs more often because their tools are there (FCP, Adobe *), home users almost exclusively use Windows because that's where their tools are (teeny-bopper's instant messenger, Internet Explorer, Word). IT workers use Windows because, you guessed it, that's where their tools are (Active Directory, Exchange). Web Servers are almost exclusively Linux-based, for example, because that's where Apache, MySQL and PHP runs best.
It's almost laughable when people post things like yours in attempt to discredit the fact that Macs market growth is astounding. You might not be seeing it, but the numbers do not lie. - georgetds, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17It has been my experience since I have bought my imac 2 years ago, my friends have shown a serious interest in buying a mac for their next computer. It would seem to me that as the amount of people who buy mac products increases, the amount of people looking over their shoulder and being impressed also will increase.
- WarPirate, on 10/10/2007, -25/+41Reputable news source? Macworld.co.Uk??? unbiased??? NOT!!!!
- Wilddigi, on 10/10/2007, -15/+31filter out Apple news if you don't like it
- Vtorch, on 10/10/2007, -11/+27The real reason people are buy Macs in not OS X by itself or the platform. It's the fact that by buying and Apple computer you also buy a Windows PC.
If Macs were still using IBM processors, not many people will be buying Macs.
Because of Macs, Microsoft Windows is perhaps even more dominant than ever. - S1L3NTC, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18It means "read a ***** book".
- alecks, on 10/10/2007, -7/+22Yeah, and those same people end up running OSX exclusively a month later when they realize they really CAN do everything on the mac side. I finally deleted my bootcamp partition after I realized i never used it beyond the initial install and showing it off to my windows friends
- insanewriters, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17The same thing was in Infoworld this morning. MacWorld didn't do the survey.
- alecks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14And by steer clear of it, he means take the time to post in an apple story
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Yeah. The Dell laptops we have are very very light.
- 16x9, on 10/10/2007, -7/+20It's true that MacWorld reported this story but they aren't the people who ran the numbers.
- wisedude, on 10/10/2007, -110/+120dream on fanboy
- lilzaphod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Tried to steer so clear that you not only clicked on the story, but had to comment on it.
I hope you don't steer clear of things so carefully when you drive you car.. - Flytrap, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14I bought my wife a 17 inch HP 9420 notebook a few months ago.... I was in a rush, we were going on holiday and she needed to take her work with her...
Then I had a horrendous bike accident (broke both legs and one arm), and found myself unable to go upstairs to the study where by desktop gear was
I used her notebook for 4 months from a the couch/wheelchair (remote desktop to my main PC) and spent every single day wishing I had bought her a mac instead. That thing is as inelegant as my underware... and it weighs a ton!
When I see what Parallels and VMWare are doing with virtualisation on the mac, I realise that all my fears about having access to my development from a mac were so unfounded... If I could go back in time I would definitely by a mac.
My next notebook is definitely going to be a mac... - JohnnyRad, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Dude, who cares?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+14Even if this were true, do ya think you guys could be a little less smug about it? Christ...
- JeffH, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Another twisted statement, brought to you by an Apple fan.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14I don't understand how people don't understand this. There are only so many people buying laptops. There are so many companies building laptops. When one manufacturer is getting 28% of that business, it is a de facto standard of the industry; Dell used to be the de facto standard with nearly that same percentage.
In other words, you're not looking at any of the other numbers of any of the other companies. If you've got a field of 100, 8 groups representing the "major" laptop manufacturers, and 30 of them are standing in one group, and the rest are evenly spaced amongst the other groups (roughly 10 per group), the group with 30 is the clear winner. - NinjaBoy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10When the other 2/3 are divided up into 50 different companies selling laptops.
- Kwinti, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Thanks geminitojanus for responding to his comment so calmly. I would have gone outright ranting at him about his stupidity.
Digg these days. . . - doggo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13"Dream on fanboy"
Heh. Look who's talking. I'm sitting here surrounded by computers, Vista, WinXP, Red Hat, OBSD, Ubuntu, and a MacBook Pro. Guess which one I'm posting with?
I'll bet you've never used OS X. And if you have, and you still claim you like name-your-os better, then you're a masochist. - moosetoga, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Several people I know have eaten pastrami in the last two weeks. Therefore, pastrami is becoming increasingly popular.
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -8/+16"A total of 3,665 ChangeWave Alliance members participated in the current survey, conducted August 1-8, 2007."
Yeah, great sample set you got there. - lharrod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Enjoy your sandwiches, you pastrami fanboys. All pastrami-lovers are douches.
That may sound absurd, but that's how the computer platforms wars sound, too. - Antialias, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10I've found that most of the people I know installing bootcamp/parallels get over the novelty in a few weeks and rarely use windows except to play the ocassional game. Most of the intel macs that have windows aren't using it as their primary OS, but merely in the sense that you might have the DOSbox emulator to play your old DOS games. All their new software will most likely be OSx native.
- Antialias, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8What kind of development? They are amazing for web development(php, perl, mysql, ajax work, etc), tons of amazing free apps. For windows application development perhaps not, but even there you can run paralells. Also you can run Linux via Parallels and have any advantage that provides as well.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Well that settles it. No one in line at a Dell kiosk in jerkwater USA has spelled DOOM for PC makers worldwide.
- oldhick, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10But this blog (http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/03/20/notebook/index.php?lsrc=mwrss) says Apple's share of the notebook industry fell by 7% and HP claimed #1??? What, conflicting blog reports on the Internet? Damn it. Can't I get the same fake numbers consistently?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+17HA
- gordonf238, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It's a beautiful machine, ain't it?
- meamog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8who, exactly, says they aren't getting the sales they want?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7By price, yes.
- TheKorn2, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12No wonder Dell is taking linux seriously now.
- Salzar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7I was looking for a new sandwich, know what i am getting pastrami!
Pastrami rules!! - jinxo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11My MBP 2.2GHz will be delivered in the next 10 days. It's my first Mac.
I've been a PC user for ~20yrs (deep in the "Power User" category, now software developer by profession), and there were specific reasons I went for the MBP :
- It was one of only a handful of laptops that offer the specs that it does, and the only one (that I know of) that did it at those dimensions and weight.
- I was supremely bored of XP, and Vista has been quite a hassle to work with (although there's quite a few things about it that I really like).
- OS X hits the sweet spot between geek-cred (Leopard will have full Unix cred. etc) and, from what I read/hear, just-works beauty.
(I used to have Aqua as a big plus, but I think that Aero will be more than a match once everything in it works as it should)
And, believe me, I labored HARD before I decided on the MBP, and it wasn't an easy decision. I -hate- its keyboard, and I looked at tens of other makes/models. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9No, it's not.
Mac viruses aren't hat hard to write, and there's been a few. The "Mac OS" is UNIX with a pretty face and a dock. There, I said it. -
