- bloomanchoo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1I was just about to buy a shiny new Macbook Pro until I found that thread on the Apple support site a couple days ago....
I've been an Apple user for 12 years and this is the first time I have hesitated in plunking down my cash for a Mac rig.
I hope they resolve it soon... and at least acknowledge the problem. - cbeach, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1My month-old Macbook Pro is affected - I'm rather hoping it's a software issue and will be resolved in the next firmware update. Not seen any problems when running Windows, which would suggest it's software rather than hardware. On the other hand I've read reports of the new Dell LED-backlit screens having similar issues
- thedevice, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1Me too, sparticus
- clompers, on 05/03/2008, -0/+0I got my macbook pro a week after the march 14 update, and in the last couple months the lines have appeared 10 times. Closing the lid and re-opening a few times seems to make it go away... for now. I had never heard about the CTRL SHIFT EJECT trick, thanks Mark.
- CypherUK, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0mines doing it as well.
- vinirusso, on 05/03/2008, -0/+0I am too. Apple?
- ikera, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0help in letting Apple know
- maconcerned, on 02/24/2009, -0/+0Wow! So i got a mac in july of 2008 because I was worried about the problems with Vista. Since that day, I have had nothing but problems. It started with multiple intermittent problems, followed by a trip to a mac store resulting in a replacement of the logic board, hard drive, optical drive, and the optical drive cable. well, i just got the computer back...
Enter the new problem, the screen. Now, i get vertical streaks (not lines) through the screen that oscillate from light to dim across the screen. Contrast adjustments do nothing.
WTF????
Is my mac a lemon or is "the apple?" - powersolar, on 05/27/2008, -0/+0Although, so many people have complained about this problem, Apple is very slow to either address this issue or adequately communicate this information to its techs/"apple genius"/employees so that this problem is not ignored or dismissed.
Sadly, they have mine for repairs but nothing is being done because it is not a reproducible problem. It's a random process that occurs only sometimes and so far no one has definitively found a way to reproduce it. - PostDoc062672, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0I am one of the affected Macbook Pro users. The vertical stripes are an annoyance and I expected better from a $2k laptop. Considering how many people are affected by this problem the least Apple can do is acknowledge the issue instead of merely ignoring the problem. I hope Apple does not play the same game with us as they did with owners of the G3 iBooks with the logic board problem (I was one as well) by burying their head in the sand until lawsuits appear on their radar. Please Apple do the right thing.
- vinirusso, on 10/13/2008, -0/+0Apple announced that it's a NVIDIA problem:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377?viewlocale=en_U ... - davelg526, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0Is this only occuring on teh 15 inch models? I assume all these models have the LED backlighting.
It looks like the LED strings are not turning on. - DigbyPro, on 05/28/2008, -0/+0Yup I got it too !
Had it for two or three months and it is now almost continuous.
Hopefully it won't "miraculously" disappear when I go the the Genius Bar tomorrow and in any case I have photographs of the problem (screen grabs do NOT show the problem) and the problem is so well documented on discussion forums.
Also disappointed by Apple's apparent lack of interest in the widespread reporting of this phenomenon.
Will come back with any helpful words of advice (if any are forthcoming) - eljoco, on 05/28/2008, -0/+0Another option (look ma, no keys) is to set 'Sleep Display' as an active screen corner in the Exposé and Spaces preferences. Should you see the stripes, push your mouse in that corner, pull the mouse back again and you're done.
- RichText, on 07/03/2008, -0/+0Also check out my blog post on this topic: http://www.ricroberts.com/articles/2008/06/09/macb ...
I'll keep it updated with any solutions if/when I find them! - lakshwadeep, on 07/30/2008, -0/+0I've had this problem on my 15" Macbook Pro for many months (the laptop itself is a little less than 1 year old). Like digbypro, it is continuous and most noticeable when the backlight brightness is a few "bars" close to zero. Full brightness seems to mask the problem. CTRL SHIFT EJECT doesn't seem to work for me.
- skrappy3, on 08/04/2008, -0/+0I'm having similar problems. My 18 month old macbook pro has intermittent vertical lines. Sometimes there are little black dots that jump around. Sometimes when I log on the whole display looks like an old tv set with the image wavering and rolling up and down. The problem is that it's intermittent. Some days the thing works just fine.
- markp99, on 05/01/2008, -1/+0My week-old macbook is having this disply. Nearly 100% reproduceable - close the cover for a few seconds, open = STRIPES. I am able to restore the display by hitting CTL_SHIFT_EJECT. Simple enough, but inexcusable. Apple needs to replace or patch!
