Yeah, getting raped twice would suck. ;) - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -6/+97Ah, blog comments.
"How can you possibly care about the iPhone when people are dying in Darfur?" - TheContinental0, on 10/12/2007, -5/+88Luckily, as someone who can both afford and wants an iPhone, my lifestyle permits me coating my hands in gold leaf on a daily basis as to minimize contact with humanity. I believe that this gold leaf will do double duty as both a safeguard against the world and the means of increasing traction for my iPhone.
- flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+85Wow, you might not even need lube.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+75"Saw off your hands.."
How do you saw off your second hand though? - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+67Even more people are dying in hospitals. We should do something about those hospitals..

- Wailord, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51Well, it's a slippery slope...

Saw off your hands and keep it in the air using ONLY YOUR MIND. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+46@Inkswamp
"Either a) you don't understand the concepts of form and function on the level of a designer or b) you have never used a Mac."
Hmmmmmm hockey puck mouse?????? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -21/+58Well, you never really know what mac fanboys will try to do with it, so probably best to keep the KY handy just in case!
- darny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37wow, this article was about as interesting as this comment.
- subwarm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+46Solution: buy an iPhone case.
- sandiegojoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34@nyheat:
you have to buy the "special" sandpaper directly from apple. It's 3 times the price, but it's designed specifically for it. - awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33I think those thoughts from time to time.
And then those thoughts pass, and I buy an iPod. - 4040, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31@ Ireland
USING YOUR MIND. - allaboutdatiki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29The aftermarket will jump to the rescue with product after product to fix this oh-so-fatal flaw.
- bud38, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30you have to buy the "special" sandpaper directly from apple. It's 3 times the price, but it's designed specifically for it.
and the packaging is fantastic. - jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24*comment from site*
"Well, I guess I won't send it to my friends in prison..." - Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -17/+38I'm not to concerned about it being slick and slippery. I find that I am able to handle a bar of soap just fine, even while my hands are wet and the soap is slippery!
I figure if I can do that, then the phone can't be any worse. - kingyubba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20it's part of the game... you can't just buy an iPhone or iPod... you have to buy an accessory to protect it.
it's the icing on the cake. $$$ - CraigJ, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22could be that we don't care?
- realdcurtis, on 06/03/2009, -7/+25Regarding Apple's form-over-function, it definitely has some truth to it.
While the Mac Pro and G5 enclosure, the iMac design, and the interfaces that Apple develops are beautiful both visually and functionally, some things that Apple has done at the sacrifice of functionality are just retarded.
The iPod's shiny metal surface. That is probably the most stupidly retarded decision Apple has ever made. After a few weeks, if you place the iPod on any surface, it gets all scratched up and looks like crap.
The G4 Titanium. The enclosure was made of Titanium that is painted silver, and the silver paint always cracked off nearly immediately after beginning use, making it look like crap.
The Hockey Puck mouse. I don't think I need to say anything else.
Lack of a refresh button/function anywhere in the Finder. This probably only affects a minor number of people, but it's functionality dropped completely at the expense of visual beauty. When I'm connected to my PC's samba share and it updates remotely, the Finder doesn't refresh until I eject the share and remount it. This is so goddamned annoying. Vista does network mounting/sharing so infinitely better than OS X.
The iPhone will be no exception. It is missing many important buttons, like a volume switch. And the case will be marked up and get ugly, of course, too. The fact that you have to buy a 20 dollar case and enlarge the dimensions of the device quite a bit just ot prevent it from slipping out of your hand or scratching up is ridiculous, and something Apple needs to learn that it cannot pass up in favor of form. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I wonder if that person could even find Darfur on a map?
- atomsforpeace, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22@Ireland: "I'll hold out for an iPod nano-type phone, whenever they decide to release that."
You mean a phone that holds about 8GB of music, like a Nano? Yep, guess you'll have to wait a while for that one... - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@d3c0yn4m31355: You do realize that "off" has two "f's", right?
Also, you apparently didn't get the joke... - u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12umm... so you could enjoy the aesthetics of it? Having such a cool phone encased in some cheesy case seems like an expensive bit of irony.
- u2wedge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13@inkswamp..
you can't deny that just about all portable Apple products are prone to excessive scratching under normal use moreso than other similar sized portables. Apple seems to use the softest plastics in the construction of all their products. - CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Greasy McSlipperyhands was devastated by the news.
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I'm just gonna super-glue the damn thing to my hand. It's not like i'm going to be putting it down anyway.
- ablez3, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14hold the saw in your teeth.
or
stick your hand into the motorized table saw. - modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9That seems like the simple solution, but I'm pretty sure I read that the iPhone screen won't work properly with a protector on it.
- apetrie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7When the solution to a products flaws is to spend more money, especially when it costs quite a lot to begin with, there is something wrong with that product.
I'm not an iPhone hater, I may even have one myself some day, but comfort and security in someones hand is a basic thing all cell phone designers should be thinking about, don't just give it a pass and shrug it off like its nothing or to be expected. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"If your screen breaks your phone is useless -- same with any other phone."
*****. At my office the other day we found a flip phone that had been run over and was literally in multiple pieces (the screen was severed from the body). We were still able to make a call from the phone to get the Caller ID information to notify the owner. My Windows Mobile phone recently developed a problem which makes the touch screen unreliable. Between the D-Pad, keyboard, and hotkeys my phone is still fully usable, and will hold me over until the new phone I want (Samsung SCH-i760) comes out next month. Phones are generally a hell of a lot tougher than their LCD screens. If you're in an accident and break your phone's screen having physical keys could very well mean the difference between being able to call for help or not. - SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I was kinda expecting it to ship with a case like the iPod video's did...
- dpfinearts, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Why in the world would you NOT buy something to protect a device you just shelled out $500 or $600 for.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12That is a negitive, there's no denying it. For those with slippery fingers, maybe a $20 case is the way to go. Personally though I owned a 5th Gen iPod and currently a Nokia phone, I haven't dropped one of them once - maybe that's just me though.
- ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They're ALREADY making iPhone cases.
- GhostFace2K, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Sounds like viral marketing to me... "Ummmm yeah the iPhone is pretty much perfect, and the only problem consumers could think of (the battery) is not a problem ("So go out and buy one!!!")... however, we do reccommend that you invest a substantial amount of extra money into buying one of our $40-$80 protective cases so that we can boost our revenues err ummm protect the slippery phone from breaking..." So hard to trust blogs on the internet ever since corporate America found out about it's potential power...
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is bad news for Greased Up Deaf Guy.
- beshte, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you care so much about darfur, why don't you use your current phone to call into the American Idol "gives back" crapalooza show and really do something positive?
- acesofspades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i could tell from day 1 once that phone drops.....its done man....$500 down the drain
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7If your screen breaks your phone is useless -- same with any other phone. As for audio playback, it takes very little battery to play music from flash memory. The PDA functions will of course drag your battery life down but that's just a fact of life for anyone who wants advanced features in their cell phone. If you don't care about pda/mp3 then just get a $50 Samsung/Motorola model.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I found the T-Mobile MDA unit especially slippery. That was one of the reasons I cited when I returned it.
- Fhionnlaoch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"The iPod's shiny metal surface. That is probably the most stupidly retarded decision Apple has ever made. After a few weeks, if you place the iPod on any surface, it gets all scratched up and looks like crap."
Amen, after my 4G iPod was irrevocably scratched on the first day I used it (after I wiped off some of the oil the human hand produces with the same special cloth I clean my glasses with). Zune here I come. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Yes comrade, I agree. Complaining and free speech is not allowed in Apple-land. Great Leader Job$ has so decreed. All praise to glorious leader. All money and praise to great leader. (repeat chant.......... over and over and over.........)
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8My SMB shares refresh automatically. I've never had any trouble seeing new files. Anyways you can add an applescript the bar at the top of the finder window that will make it refresh.
