- scrimaxinc, on 11/07/2007, -2/+34I remember going to Canada when I was about 10 years old (12-13 years ago) and I had a bowl of Lucky Charms for breakfast. I was shocked to learn that they only had the basic marshmallows, clovers, moons, etc. Do you know how confusing it is for a child when they're told a whole country won't have a single red balloon for years???? I was scarred for life.
- Tlemcani, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Q4 !!! Way too loong, they dont even have movies here yet on Itunes , how come their products all take so long to get here.
- smartssa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Data plans aren't cheap in Canada, that's for sure. Average prices are $50/month for 5 MB of data. And upwards to $100/mo for "Unlimited" which we all know is far from it.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17There are no unlimited plans.
$100 is for 200MB data. And that's a promotion. - smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Of course they will require a data plan, of course none will be reasonably priced.
Why oh why can we not have competition here. - ShadowVlican, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15no worries there, Rogers will take care of that
- defrex, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I HATE ***** Rogers!
Did you know they shape bittorrent traffic?

I don't agree with it, so I stopped being a Rogers customer. (That and their bogus claim of 98% of all Canada is covered).
This MacWorld was the most disappointing ever. Here's a phone, that you can only use on one carrier, and only in one country.
Here's a set top box, that will only play itunes purchased movies/tv/video (Sorry again rest of the world!), and also will not record for you, even though it has a hard drive.
Here's the touch screen interface the rumor sites have been drooling over for the last 2 or 3 years, but not for the ipod, just the phone that you can't have.
And one more thing, we're not even going to whisper about the new OS, or any new desktop/laptop tech specs. We know that's why some of you are here, but whatever.
I will still be buying some Mac laptops, but I don't think I'll be buying anything that was just announced this week.
the apple tv can be replaced by a much more capable MythTV or other PVR, and the iPhone is just not looking like it's worth it to me anymore. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's taking that long because, without a Canadian Cingular, they're still trying to figure out how to rape you guys in terms of price and freedom (contracts) in the name of "the precious."
- Avengelist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9
I was in a Rogers retail location last night, asking about the iPhone, and commented on the expensive data plans. I was very quickly ("OMG - I have to save my commission") informed that Rogers is coming out with a $40.00 per month unlimited plan (at which point i raised my eyebrow and said - "yeah, right.").
So take that piece of info and do what you like with it... - ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What a bargain...it would only cost me like $45 to download an MP3 to my phone.
- Wingnut233, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Since Rogers is going to be launching the phone, we can likely assume that the pricing will be similar to their current Blackberry plan. This plan runs from $25 for 0.5MB all the way up to $100 for 200MB. And that doesn't include the voice plan that you'd need to add on top of it.

- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Haven't heard about the new rates, but I'll believe it when I see it. Rogers/Fido has a monopoly on GSM phone service in Canada. Plus they spend millions trying to convince new customers to sign up, then treat their current customers like dirt.
Agreed. Contracts are evil. - whiteyonthemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Verizon offers 0.002cents/KB in Canada. Of course, by 1 Cent, they mean 1 Dollar.
- lowlevel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, data plans are ridiculous in Canada. I've been going without for years :/ I used to use 'dial up' on my cell phone with Bell, but all the gsm carriers have disabled the old analog modem functionality forcing any data users to buy these ridiculous data plans. My phone even has a built in modem.. which I could (if Fido or Rogers would allow me) use to dial up into any ISP, using only my airtime and granted.. only getting about 9600bps... but no. They won't allow that because they're scum sucking jerks.
- awilke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Couple of things:
-Rogers and Fido are redoing their data plans right now and should be out the same time they launch UTMS and HSDPA nation wide. I've heard their new rates are much more reasonable.
-Even if Rogers/Fido does carry it, I would never sign onto a contract with them, that's asking for trouble. Ebay Unlocked FTW. - Tatusmi, on 11/07/2007, -1/+8I will probably just end up ebaying one and using it with Rogers anyway. I'm currently using a T-Mobile MDA.
- Malovech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is sad, mostly because Rogers is terrible. In fact most of our large telecoms and ISPs are terrible. There is no competition here, and they're taking advantage of it.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's official...I am OVER the iPhone! Two days ago I couldn't have been more excited about the iPhone, and was ready to buy one that day...then Steve said it won't be out until 2008 for Asia, and who knows when here in Australia...I could be waiting almost two years. This phone is still a pipe dream for me.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Rogers. Now that should be a swear word. I would give my left nut for another GSM provider in Canada! I almost switched to Fido, then whoops Rogers bought them. I hear Fido hasn't changed since then, but still I would like a choice. Seriously I would love it if Cingular started operating up here. For all the complaining you do about them you still have a choice down south there. Lucky gits...
And using CDMA is not an option. When I travel I like to take my phone and just pop in a new SIM card. I can't even buy an unlocked GSM handset in Canada! WTF?! I thought we were the kings of capitalism in North America but when it comes to phone service we're hostages to a monarchy. - The_Ox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If only Cingular still had their North America rate plan available... Hopefully it will come back with the re-merging of AT&T.
- TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5North America generally gets screwed when it comes to wireless technology. There are some amazing cell phones, even from the likes of Motorola and other major players, that debut in places like Asia, Europe, and the Middle East *LONG* before they see the light of day here--if they ever do at all. So after taking all of that into account, Canada gets screwed even more. I'm guessing it must be a market share thing, regarding the delay from the US to Canada. In this case, it's probably best to launch where the biggest potential market is, and then work on regulatory compliance and launches in other areas.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Just FYI, the admin at my employer (Canada high tech company ~200 employees) says that for our 60 Blackberrys"
If that is the Unlimited Email and Web plan.. it is actually only 50mb.... Ya.. I don't get how the providers here get away with naming anything UNLIMITED.
We have large corporate plans as well. - woranl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7we need more "wireless" tubes in Canada
- scottybrooks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There should be a dramatic drop in rates in canada since number portability is coming in may 07.
cheers
scott - Snoz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Rogers is ridiculous it is $5(CDN) for 2MB and an additional 3¢ per KB! !@!@
http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wireless/services/voice/navigate-mobile-internet.asp? - boxlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just FYI, the admin at my employer (Canada high tech company ~200 employees) says that for our 60 Blackberrys we pay $50 a month each for unlimited access. I don't know if this is a corporate rate though, maybe the same price is not available for individual subscribers.
- smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yeah $15.00 for 1.5MB, that's a REAL DEAL
- number8888, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well considering that Rogers is the only GSM carrier, we don't really have a choice but to use them. We really need more competition. The Rogers data plans are ridiculous!!
- laurentlasalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple will probably do CDMA eventually... Just checked, and I have to wait until 2009 anyway!
- nutsackninja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I was complaining to rogers about there dataplans for over 3 years now.
How is it fair that in the states they pay $20 for unlimited data when $20 here would give you about 1 meg.
When i had my treo 650 I didn't use any Internet enabled applications and just the polling data was over 3 megs in 1 month which basically makes any plan below 5 megs useless (a 5 meg plan costs close to $40) (Paying $100 a month for a dataplan IS WAY too expensive)
Canada is still in the stone age when it comes to cellphones and there data rates. Rogers is just too greedy to catch up. - ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm a Fido user for quite some time. Although Fido was aquired by Rogers some time ago, and at the time i freaked out because I though they would ***** up the company, so far nothing has changed. Before going to Fido I was with Rogers and the thing that made me switch at the time was the unlimited incoming calls thing and Rogers fking random charging. Once with Fido all my bills became equal month after month and therefore I'm a happy costumer.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And how exactly would one go about buying an unlocked iPhone?? How many people are going to sign up for a 2 year iPhone contract, just so they can sell their phone on eBay for 5 times the amount?? Come to think of it, probably a lot...
- Fabulous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good god! I really hope Rogers doesnt get the iPhone and that other providers can like Telus or Bell. I hate ***** rogers. Bad service, horrible options and WAY TOO over priced. If I saw Ted Rogers walking down the street I'd punch him in the nose for stealing my money with overpaid garbage! I really hope that one day Canada will have more providers than Rogers and Bell for TV, Phone(home/mobile) and Internet.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Why is there such a difference in price?"
There are only three networks here... Rogers, Telus and Bell. They only only match each other because there is no need for heavy competition.. All other providers are just virtual providers. They all run off of the big three networks - polymorphist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If I saw Ted Rogers walking down the street I'd punch him in the nose for stealing my money with overpaid garbage!"
That's why you will never see him "walking down the street"...
Come to think of it, what's the last time you saw some multi-millionair "walking down the street"? - lowlevel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because Canadian companies are slow to move on anything. ;) I always have to buy my doodads from the US, and get slammed with duty/brokerage/$20 COD charge by UPS for collecting duty at my door/etc. The products simply are not available here when released.... ever. We have a much smaller market up here as well.. which may have something to do with it.
- GunbladeVIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're doing THREE year contracts now? Ugh, how long before that ends up in America? I practically had to pull the customer service rep's teeth out to get a one-year contract last time I re-upped with Sprint.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is no price difference between the providers.. At the end of a contract, If you have one you can do one of two things.
1. Call your current provider and say you are leaving for X providers better rate.
All of the providers have special MATCH plans that are unlisted, unless you are a really cheap client, they will simply offer you the exact same thing.
2. You are getting a good rate but want to switch to a provider with better service and support. Not as easy as option 1 but you can some time call in and say you would switch if you could get the same thing.. and sometimes they will offer you the MATCHing plan, but only if you go on a contract. - madogvelkor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Apple will have to get the Canadian Trademark for "iPhone" from Comwave first. They tried to register it, but failed already.
The only place I know of where they actually have the trademark is in Australia... - atommclain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I sincerly feel sorry for you guys, I had an unlimited data plan with my blackberry through T-mobile and its was "only" $20. Why is there such a difference in price?
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, RAV (random access voicemail) is one that comes to mind.
- minsight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2iPhones are dependent on the carrier doing a bunch of stuff to make them work. Apparently Cingular was the only American provider who was willing to be that flexible. So, if you could get an unlocked iPhone (HA!, NO!), if you tried to do anything useful with it on Rogers, it most likely wouldn't work.
- Geoffrois, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Funny, three year plans are pretty much the norm in my part of Canada (for most non-savvy customers anyway). I was surprised to see the iPhone deal was ONLY with a 2-year plan since I thought the US had similar practices.
- ross., on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"iPhones are dependent on the carrier doing a bunch of stuff to make them work."
What exactly does the iPhone do that makes it so carrier dependent?? Visual voice mail?? thats not exactly a biggie...here in Australia I am with hutchison's "Three" network, and they provide what is essentially is visual voice mail...and it's FREE! Voicemail messages are automatically emailed to my phone, with all the necessary info such as who they are from, time, date, length etc..just like the iPhone...it's not really anything new...and it's something EVERY carrier can EASILY implement. - rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2polymorphist
"Come to think of it, what's the last time you saw some multi-millionair "walking down the street"?"
Intro to TV show 'The Apprentice" features Trump walking down the street in slow motion - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I personally think Apple are SIGNIFICANTLY worse at managing product releases than Sony. Sony seems to cop a lot of flak in this department, I think Apple's time is due.
