- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -2/+34Yes, I'm sure not releasing an application for a phone is going to destroy Google's image.
/s - SickofSects, on 11/17/2008, -0/+27I am kind of surprised by Arrington's apocalyptic reaction hinting at some acute embarrassment for Google.. so an app comes on a couple of days later than originally speculated (and Friday was merely speculation by the NYT), but that's hardly a catastrophe. Seems to me like someone's trying to make a "OMG SCOOP" story out of a rather non-existent or mildly interesting one.
I liked a comment I read on one of the blogs linking to Arrington's piece : "Catastrophe nowadays is inconveniencing a blogger for 2-3 days. War, pestilence etc is just business as usual". - HookmasterCH47, on 11/16/2008, -4/+26Hmm voice activated searching? That'll be inconvenient when I'm looking for herpes outbreak information...
- DelMonte, on 11/17/2008, -2/+14There's absolutely no proof and nothing that shows that Apple refused Google's application, it's all speculation.
If Google said at the end of the week that they were gonna release the app this week-end, it's because they knew it was already approved, as it takes more than two days for an app to be approved.
Some show-stopper bug must have delayed the planned launch, and they removed the video because it was telling people to go search on the appstore for the app. - Cglass, on 11/17/2008, -0/+8There's a video in the article.. in the bottom.. it's the same video, maybe even the original, and working fine.
Reading the articles usually helps. =) - DigDugDigger, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Then how do apps like Shazam work? I imagine some file is being uploaded over EDGE/3G to their servers. Unless some processing is being done on the phone itself to lower bandwidth... I got no clue how it works.
But I'd imagine Google would also take a similar approach with their app. Compress the voiceprint down and upload it, or decode it directly on the phone... however the hell it works. All I know is that Shazam works pretty damn well on EDGE, my iPhone takes longer to load images than it does to find a song I just put its mic up to. - mark076h, on 11/17/2008, -1/+4No they will just say it is using too much bandwidth for the 3G network.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3It's not the video embedded in the article?
- EtherGnat, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Actually I find the voice search in Windows Live Search Mobile to be invaluable and I use it all the time. It finds what I'm looking for the first time better than 95% of the time, and normally when I have trouble with it it's because there's significant background noise.
It's only searching for addresses and business locations, so it has an easier job, but voice search is still a valuable feature. Microsoft Voice Command works great for me, too. - spookyttws, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2What, that you were using the phone for searching rather than carrying on a conversation? How are those any different?
- RyeBrye, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3Not to be an android fanboy or anything... but Android DOES have speech recognition in the platform... (right now, I think it's a private API - but that will change soon) - so writing this application on Android would be about 2 seconds of work - use voice recognition to get a search query - make sure user verifies what you recognized is correct - and then fire off an intent for a search with that information in it.
That speech recognition thing built into the platform is kind of not getting much play - but I can hit the button and say the name of any of my contacts and it will let me call them (without having pre-recorded any audio or anything like on most cheap cell phones) and I can even voice dial by saying numbers... which is a pretty cool feature. - nunofgs, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2Why was it speculation? Google had a dedicated page up with videos and documentation. It even told you to click a link to go to the itunes store and download the app.

This is going to work out about as well as talking to our computers. - wave789, on 11/17/2008, -7/+9These comments suck.
- crazzy88ss, on 11/17/2008, -2/+4Try explaining this one to the cops when they pull you over for talking on the phone without a hands free device...
- kkiran, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1One feature they did not demonstrate - If you can ask questions, you should be able to say - Dial 6345678900 and it should dial a number, no more expensive voice dialing software! Cydia and This App coupled with QuickGold should all be on the homescreen (QuickGold in the background under home button though!)!

- inactive, on 11/18/2008, -0/+1thank you
- blacklilyninja, on 11/17/2008, -2/+3Anti-trust law suit PLEASE!!!!
- reverland, on 11/17/2008, -2/+3I thought this embarrassed Apple more than Google. It just shows how unpredictable the whole app store approval process is. No one can predict when things will be up and Apple approves some apps quicker than others. If a big app contributor with some of best free apps for the iPhone can't get an app approved in a timely fashion then something needs to change . Would be nice if the app store process was more transparent.
- johnny81, on 02/17/2009, -0/+0damn apple
http://www.linkbuilderz.com/custom_link_building.h ... - cleverboy, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1How about this... Microsoft. Tell Me. Already developing for iPhone. Patent lawsuit.
- maximusdigg, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1Lame old story: voice recognition doesn't work. Period.
- gbhall, on 11/17/2008, -6/+6Apple better not be stingy and say that it "competes with one of Apple's own applications". Enough of this rubbish! How do things progress without competition! Especially if it benefits Apple!
Why don't Google try to release this on the G1? - jeepsterboy, on 11/19/2008, -0/+0yup just like a crappy launch of mobile me destroyed apple. I find it funny that when something fails with Microsoft people moan and groan but when something fails or flails with Apple people just say "oh, its ok, its apple, they are so cool we don't need to belly ache"
*written on my macbook* - ibeetle, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1So, this is turning into Opera for iPhone part 2.
- ibeetle, on 11/17/2008, -1/+1How does this embarrass Apple? Google either did not even have an application to submit to Apple, or they assumed that because they are Google they get preferential treatment.
- spookyttws, on 11/17/2008, -2/+1You're an idiot.
- MMaster23, on 11/17/2008, -3/+2Yarr I pirate Google
- Dr3w, on 11/17/2008, -2/+1Pics of unicorns?
- Dylson, on 11/17/2008, -3/+1Yes you do.
- hiro, on 11/17/2008, -5/+2Along with voice dialling, this is a gimmick I can't see me being interested in using
- atezun, on 11/17/2008, -8/+4So google made a voice search app for the iphone, and apple had refused to approve it, possibly because they are developing a competing product.
Someone should just sue their way onto the iphone already. - inactive, on 11/17/2008, -7/+3They should just release it for jailbroken iphones , what now apple!
- hoavu, on 11/17/2008, -5/+0:)
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -9/+3The reason your phone is scratched is because you bought an iPhone. This all could've been avoided.
- CrimsonBlur, on 11/17/2008, -8/+1Oops.
- DrLeePhD, on 11/17/2008, -11/+2they're really leading in their field. Lets sue them cause my phone scratched.
- osage, on 11/16/2008, -11/+1any1 got a copy of the youtube video?
Just to make a bash version of it... - inactive, on 11/17/2008, -16/+4Please Bury Me
