- reallydigginit, on 10/10/2007, -8/+44No 3G. Worried U.S. nerds would start crying all over again and want another $100.
- haackers, on 10/10/2007, -5/+35Hey Jobs,
We would like some iPhone loving up here in Canada Eh!!!! - rick2k, on 10/10/2007, -15/+32No iPhone for me then.
1. NO 3G? What the *****. Welcome to 2003
2. 02, Possibly one of the worst network in the UK. - sonycam, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22What are you talking about? Out of O2, Vodafone, Orange and Virgin, O2 is my favourite. I've been using them for years and never had a problem, it's not like we have a network in the UK like AT&T who people hate.
- terrorpin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17The problem they'll have is that the UK mobile phone market doesn't work like in the US.
If you're signing up on a monthly contract, you get a phone "free", or pay at most, say £50 for one for a very good phone if it's a very low monthly rate. The majority of British consumers just won't consider paying nearly three hundred quid for a phone and a contract. - TheSolomon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16You are seeing the effects of the opinion "if it isn't the one to which *I* belong, it must be horrible." It's a remnant of juvenile attitudes, such as "my school is the best, my town is the best, my country is the best." Education and maturity brings about a change in perspective that allows a person to recognize that sometimes you aren't part of the best. Sometimes other people have better things. And sometimes the other option isn't the enemy or the opponent; sometimes the other option is just as good as what you have now. It takes personal growth before some people can truly understand they are not a unique snowflake, and others can make different decisions based upon sound reasoning, and aren't automatically "wrong" or "stupid" just because they disagree with you.
Unless these anti-O2 people can back up their claims, with hopefully more than anecdotal "my calls dropped all the time in this canyon"-type info, I would say they're just being childish. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16That's the rule of phone networks, if you don't use O2, you HAVE GOT to say it's the worst, even though you've probably never used it before.
Had they chosen Vodafone or Orange, the reactions would have been exactly the same. - SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14No. The reason is that a 3G radio+larger battery would be too expensive, for a small return in the USA (3G coverage there is minimal); the phone would be $50-100 more expensive, thicker, heavier, and almost nobody (in the USA) would benefit from the faster speeds. That is the problem of a phone designed basically for the USA and not for the world.
- Johnnell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I was considering to buy one until i saw the cheapest plan was £35 a month, doh!
- calgone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I understand you're thoughts completely on the no 3G but welcome to 2007 in the USA. Our AT&T 3G coverage nationwide is minimal at best (better in major cities but leave those guys and your back on EDGE most of the time). In the US no 3G is a bummer but not a deal killer (I have an iPhone) where as in Europe no 3G = obsolete phone basically.
- 4ndr3w, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14Go talk to Rogers about unlimited data then.
- ketha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Why are people calling O2 the worst network? Coverage, customer service, prices??? explain people, before I spend £900 (35x188+270) on them.
- lukee, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I think the U.S. was an identifier, not a qualifier; i.e. nerds in the U.S., as opposed to the nerds in the U.K. who haven't experienced the price drop yet.
- linespin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8unlimited data is not unlimited for O2..
- iashraf, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Those price plans ***** suck! Why is ***** always so much more expensive over here. I'm moving to the states!
- dinkola, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I wonder if anyone that writes the whole 'this carrier is rubbish' remark, is going to back it up with some reason. Ive been on O2 since it started & have never had any complaints. Im not saying its the best or worst network to pick, it be interested to know why its the worst.
- Lockhart, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9A major factor in getting Dugg is luck.
- capecodcarl, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Their reasoning is that 3G consumes too much power and since you obviously can't swap out the battery when it is dead and you're on the go (another Apple innovation), they had to settle for a less power-hungry 2.5G phone. I don't believe Apple will be able to make a 3G phone until they bite the bullet and make an iPhone with a user-replaceable battery. How many other modern phones are out there without a swappable battery? Besides, they could make a killing on over-priced Apple replacement batteries for $75 a piece and people would buy them.
- nuttyphilt, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9IMHO, all networks in the UK have much the same coverage - they all claim to cover 99% of the population. However each of them will have pockets of very poor coverage and one of these pockets might be your house or your office. I'm sure this is what drives the 'worst network' comments...
- Thud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7For that price, it should be personally delivered by Paul Potts.
- Nicksname1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BURN!!!
Someone call the canadian burn center we got another victim. - hero2zero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Am going to get an import and unlock it myself, I have been with O2 previously and the phone I had went kaput! Sent it back and received nothing from them for 6 months, and they still continued to charge me. Orange in my opinion has a much better plan system - 600 minutes, unlimited SMS and unlimited data on my plan.
- 4fingers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6For the people that are saying that 02 suck may I ask them what network they think is better and why.
- NeoRicen, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8It's not about how good the network is or coverage etc. it's about how much money they can squeeze from them.
- zeqefazlija, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Good call. The unlocked phone from Apple you can get - but the cost of using it on Rogers will be like getting kicked in the nuts once a month.
- timusca, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Would you people stop saying 02 and start saying O2? There's a difference! That's like using a lowercase "L" as an uppercase "i"... for example, the people using 02 instead of O2 are IDIOTS, not lDIOTS.
- jamesburton1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Nothing can be worse than Vodafone.
- roodammy44, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wrong!
I got the latest Sony Ericsson phone (cos they don't crash like WM or Nokia N series) for free on a £20/month contract.
And it's 3G.
With O2's data charges you're gonna see a lot of people pissed off at £3 a meg. Lets hope they get taken to court and forced to change them. - jamiembrown, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Its live on Carphone Warehouse's website now too: http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?ARTICLE=MAIN.UK.INTERNET.STATIC.APPLE.IPHONE I actually thought the tariffs were ok - I was expecting something more like £50pm.
- neocr0n, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6O2 are a good network but I have no interest in the iphone. I'll stick with Nokia & Sony Ericsson.
- richardiscool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I've been on O2 right through Cellnet > BT Cellnet > O2. Never had a problem, and you sound like a ***** *****.
- potterboy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Your infRastructures are nowhere near Japans.
- wellyuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+422 month contract! How the ***** did you get suckered into that one?!
- GreenAlien, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"2. 02, Possibly one of the worst network in the UK."
That's a sweeping statement. There's not that many networks in the UK. T-Mobile in the UK (and those those virtual networks that use it too) are generally considered the worst in the UK for several years now. Orange and Vodafone have the best reputation. With O2 sitting in the middle somewhere. - ashwin100, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They promised him a free "Orange bumpersticker" and pen.
- roodammy44, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I like O2 because they're generally cheap. As long as you don't want to use the intertubes:
£3 per MEGABYTE - Johnnell, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5It's directly from Engadget
- stuartpetty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I have a contract with O2 but its cheaper for me to get one from the US and unlock it I guess?? anybody have any joy with that idea?
- thehurricaneuk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3gonna buy mine from the states and unlock. its the same phone, i rang o2, i have a better deal for 35 quid a month, check their online tariffs, 1000 texts and 800 minutes instead of the krap 200 they are offering, they wouldnt let me move over without getting a new deal and loosing my minutes.
edit: just noticed my o2 nokia n73 has flashed up with an edge icon... interesting... - jamesburton1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The star dash tricks work on all networks.
- springo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3People digg it from Engadget's website, not from upcoming stories, that's why.
- ketha, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Why is O2 the worst? Explain.. I've been with every network BUT O2 so it's a geniune question.
- Darrelc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Im on the £35 a month contract at the moment, o2 are fantastic except the data charges. hopefully I'll be able to upgrade to an iPhone. Never wanted one but the unlimited data plan on o2 is about 30 quid a month anyway. I just got my phone bill and got stung £6.38 for 2.753Mb. Bah.
- kiksy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5What an awful deal. £35 for 200mins/txt , plus £269 for the phone?!!? whats the phone got ? No 3G , no MMS , no video calls, a 2mp camera (with no settings or video, or flash), you cant use iTunes to even have your own ringtones! as someone said before , its a 4 year old spec phone. The UI/touch business really is all its got going for it.
- monkeymad2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3No you don't...
The unlocking software works without it being singed up to AT&T - padfoot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Learn to reply.

Magic. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4but in te us you pay for INCOMING calls as well remember.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3well my well off buddies, my gadget a holic buddies and even my apple fanboy buddies in the uk along with myself are all avoiding the iphone due to it being over priced, under featured and not really worth signing another 18 month contract for and especially not worth paying £269.
- ScottyDontKnow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Canada ?
- shamess, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I'm still getting one. But not when they release, I'll get one when my 22 month contract (ass-raped by Orange) has expired.
