- macmcraeart, on 10/04/2009, -18/+145screw thinner imacs. how about making them cheaper, not prone to overheating and easily upgradable instead?
- Rudegar, on 10/04/2009, -1/+74same thing could be said about tv's and yet they get thinner and thinner too
- cmallinson, on 10/04/2009, -3/+63Dropping the price of the Mac Mini could have a greater effect than you think. With the price of large monitors coming down, paired with a Mini, you can put computers all over your house, almost like kiosks. I have one running each TV, and a couple being used as collocated servers. These little machines are awesome, and are getting better with each revision.
- ricksite, on 10/04/2009, -3/+54It is funny how everyone offers suggestions of what Apple needs to do to make money or become successful (build a netbook, lower prices, etc...). This isn't 1997. Whatever Apple is doing now seems to be working pretty well for them.
- digitalpencil, on 10/04/2009, -10/+55if you want a cheap, upgradeable PC, buy a cheap, upgradeable, generic tower, not an all-in-one.
the iMac's actually a pretty well-priced aio pc compared to badged alternatives from the likes of Dell, HP etc. and i've not heard of overheat with any iMac post-G5. - MtheoryX, on 10/04/2009, -9/+42I don't think I really need a thinner iMac. It's not like I carry it around anywhere.
- swmbuk, on 10/04/2009, -6/+37Dude all you seem to do is go to Apple stories and troll, get a ***** life. I hate french cars, and lots of things in fact, but I don't bother wasting my time with them. You can't be enjoying whatever products you own instead of Apple products if all you do is use them to troll on about Apple.
- MacParrot, on 10/04/2009, -0/+20This obsession that Apple has for thin isn't making Macs any better. How about the machine being a little thicker and coming up with ways to change out the hard drive WITHOUT voiding the warranty or having to have it done by an authorized Apple dealer. How about coming up with ways to offer more USB or FireWire ports with Express Card slots?
I know everyone seems to be all butthurt over no BluRay option, but honestly does this really matter? Instead of worrying about optical hardware that will be irrelevant (probably faster than you might expect) soon, or how thin a DESKTOP Mac can be, give us some expansion options other than RAM. - swmbuk, on 10/04/2009, -4/+21but it is your responsibility not to act like a total ***** and not troll...
- seinman, on 10/04/2009, -0/+17They already include DVI ports, and DVI-HDMI cables are under $10 on Monoprice. Don't let lack of HDMI be the reason that stops you from buying one.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/04/2009, -1/+17The mini has optical audio out. That's not "full HD" audio, but you can do 5.1 over it no problem, using Dolby Digital. Just find and check the appropriate boxes in the DVD player app and VLC.
- 0260, on 10/04/2009, -5/+20Boring. Make things big and bulky with nuclear reactors inside!
- kfergthegreat, on 10/04/2009, -1/+15It won't. Apple is pushing displayport, which is actually pretty cool.
- TVarmy, on 10/04/2009, -0/+14Steve Jobs would make an awesome Darth Vader.
"I am pleased to present our latest invention, the new Death Star. The engineers have been working around the clock on this one, and I hear we're starting to run up against some hard limits of physics and even the Force. It's twice as big as the old one, but it only uses half as much fuel! Oh, and one more thing. Did you ever get frustrated about the placement of the exhaust port on the old model? Well, guess what..." - shauncullen, on 10/04/2009, -0/+13mini has had 9400 m for a while now.
- logicbus, on 10/04/2009, -5/+18Core i7 processors? A Mac Mini that can use more than 4GB of RAM? And has a good video card?
- hiroyukibatosai, on 10/04/2009, -1/+14Would you rather have something that takes up more space that does the same thing?
- digitalpencil, on 10/04/2009, -2/+13filter the topic dumbass.
- MacParrot, on 10/04/2009, -2/+12OK here's the part Wyodiver where you come back and whine about being dugg down by Apple fanboys or saying that Apple sucks (name of some animal here) balls. You're a one-joke troll and from the looks of it most people (not just whatever your definition of fanboys are) are tired of it and you.
- digitalpencil, on 10/04/2009, -0/+10it's polycarbonate according to their site.
- MtheoryX, on 10/04/2009, -0/+10MacBook Pros just had a big refresh a few months ago.
- bdorry, on 10/04/2009, -2/+12It's funny, Apple haters are even more annoying than the fanbois they are obsessed with.
- MtheoryX, on 10/04/2009, -0/+10The mini is not the mid-sized desktop you're looking for.
- digitalpencil, on 10/04/2009, -9/+18applehaters.. even more annoying than the fanboys they abhor.
- MacParrot, on 10/04/2009, -1/+9Move along...Move along
- AmusedToDeath, on 10/04/2009, -4/+12Hopefully this round will include an HDMI port...
- RaulMuadDib, on 10/05/2009, -0/+8Yeah, that's the answer. Don't make suggestions, just stop buying them.
- hiroyukibatosai, on 10/04/2009, -2/+10Can you build anything better? No.
- TheAbsintheHare, on 10/04/2009, -0/+8He was talking about the iMac, not the macbook.
- hiroyukibatosai, on 10/04/2009, -18/+25Don't buy one then?
- Urkel, on 10/04/2009, -1/+8Thin is good, but at some point doesn't a product become "too thin"? Like my Macbook Pro feels perfect in terms of balancing power and thin/weight. But an iMac? Does it really make a difference if it's 1/5" thinner?
Apple is great at this already but what i'd like to see is more efficient use of square-inch on the face of products. - digiguy, on 10/04/2009, -3/+10What Apple needs is better Quality Control. Every run of Macs seems to have issues, YES- even the 2nd and 3rd revisions. I ordered a MacPro 2 years ago and the videocard was installed wrong. Apple did exchange it for a replacement, but why did it go out like that?
- kfergthegreat, on 10/04/2009, -0/+7No not, macbook pros.
- KevenM, on 10/05/2009, -1/+7What absurd point are you trying to make?
- aserer511, on 10/04/2009, -9/+15ah, the polyurethane macbook-the Hyundai of macs
- fuxxx, on 10/04/2009, -1/+7And less processing power as well.
If they'd just settle on a fat iMac (everybody would still buy it), they could have an 8 core iMac - digiguy, on 10/04/2009, -0/+6I agree, Especially when we aren't getting any money from it
- MtheoryX, on 10/04/2009, -0/+6Unless for some reason they make the base thinner also, it's not taking up any more or less space than what I have now.
- getoffmybridge, on 10/04/2009, -0/+5Are you asking?
- sylvainp, on 10/05/2009, -0/+5The mac mini use a 9400m for some time now. I use it in 1080p and use an external high quality sound card for the audio.
Paired with a ipod touch (remote + rowmote pro) and using plex it make the perfect media server for the living room. It is also compatible with logitech harmony remotes.
It's small, silent, reliable and quite nice in the audio/video component rack. - firefox15, on 10/04/2009, -3/+8You clearly have never taken apart a laptop other than a Mac. I work at a computer repair shop, and Apple products are the worst to work on. Actually, most laptops have a socketed CPU that can be easily changed. Apple are the only people I can think of who choose to go with a soldered CPU.
Also, in regard to the MacBook being "easy" to work on, have you actually taken off the back plate on those things? If you did, you would see that Apple doesn't trust an "advanced user" at all. In fact, you need to purchase a special screwdriver to remove the battery, which is vital to remove in all repairs so you don't shock yourself.
Think you can just buy that screwdriver? Think again. The bit you need is a Torx Plus Tamper Resistant 6, and on the newer ones, a very small tri-lobe Torx. The only people who make them are Apple (who sell them for over $40 each), and the only way you can order from Apple is to get Apple Authorized Repair Center status (harder than it sounds). - brickbat, on 10/04/2009, -1/+6www.plexapp.com
- MacParrot, on 10/04/2009, -1/+5How about asking for more original material on Digg? Is that possible or are you going to now roll over into the single-button mouse/ no right-click jokes?
- digitalpencil, on 10/04/2009, -5/+9how about less trolling and more filtering topics you don't like?
- lostngone, on 10/04/2009, -0/+4Just think about it. A ultra thin computer with the form factor/look of the iMac that could be slid off its stand and be used as a tablet when you are away. Basically a docking station for a tablet PC.
Of course most people would want a smaller screen because even if it was ultra thin a 24 inch tablet would be kinda big. - mightycbu, on 10/05/2009, -0/+4it's a Dutch expression meaning 'far out' (if you live in the seventies) or 'cool'.
- digitalpencil, on 10/04/2009, -3/+7it's got dvi and optical out already meaning you can pass-out HD signals anyway and i wouldn't be surprised if it includes a 9400M in this rev instead of the old GMA chips.
i wouldn't expect anything fanciful though, it uses notebook components to keep the footprint so small and quiet. i doubt very much that they're about to sacrifice this to turn it into a power-house. - AngelBunny, on 10/05/2009, -0/+4Building your own computer will always be cheaper than any brand not just apple.
- digitalpencil, on 10/04/2009, -5/+9Macbooks are $999?
- TheAbsintheHare, on 10/04/2009, -0/+3Wouldn't it have been cooler if Han had been frozen in polycarbonate instead? All slick and Apple like.
