- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually it is higher... they left out ONLINE SALES! So it's probably closer to 8-10%
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, one would think that retail purchases would include mostly residential use computers. That's probably why they use that figure instead of online ordering, maybe that'd actually be lower
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Uhh... this is just for three months worth of sales. The user base is much larger than 6%
Sorry to disappoint you acemilo. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'Lemming Spam' Doesn't sound very tasty. I think I'll pass. Apple is back baby!
- tophfisher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One thing to keep in mind is that even at 6% I read some where thats still 1 in 5 home computers. If you take out the sales for corporations, and you accounts for already established customer base the figure turns out to be kind of surprising.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know the percent of the World market Apple has? This is only the U.S. PC market.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weareglass, it would be if it were possible to purchase a Mac from just about any place like you would a PC. Online is how many people still purchase Macs. Apple is opening more stores everyday.
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to all retailers the powerbooks are starting to drop in production. And the nano was so recently released that a video ipod would only hurt nano sales.
It will be a new powerbook. The real hype machines say it will be a Pentium M. I doubt that though. I guess it will be some upgrade to the G4 Powerbooks. But yeah... could be a Pentium M. Apple doesn't see the market or the content for a video ipod. - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's happening.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obvious? Well then, maybe you should consider becoming a tech analyst. Good luck with that and keep us updated. ;-)
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unix has been out for how long now Heavyness? Is it safe? Is it secure? Well then you have your answer.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy *****! Thank you for this news. YES!
"Through August, Apple's share of the U.S. retail market for computers, excluding online sales, grew to 6.6% from 4.3% in the same period last year, according to market researcher NPD Group." - ashanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good article. ;)
- weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, I forgot to type a line. Online sales would include bulk shipments to corporations, and as far as I know Apple's marketshare is still vastly higher in residential markets and education than in business. So brick and mortar sales, being almost all residential, will have a higher proportion of Apple sales. Does that sound right?
- heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you can almost hear all the hackers and virus writers booting up their apples...
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weareglass WTF? If these are recorded sales through brick and morter only then if you include online how can it be lower?
- Hexxagonal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Obviously there is going to be an increase over last year, I actually thought it would be higher.
- npacheco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dominiccarr, completely irrelevant.
- tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will these numbers ever grow to something substantial like 40-60%, without Apple selling a version of OSX for PC's?
- ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not knocking Apple, but why do Apple people feel its so important to post this kind of ***** on here every 3 months.....I swear this kind of post is on here at least once every quarter...
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No computer system is 100% secure. But yes a stock OSX install vs a stock XP install is a no brainer.
A heavily tweaked XP install is something totally diffrent. And no I'm not talking security updates and elabroate antivirus software. I'm talking about simply dumping IE and Outlook. Then close some ports. Done. - weareglass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That is a good point, I'm just saying don't assume the online stats would be better, they may in fact be worse or similar, when accounting for the many corps who buy a bunch of Dells online in bulk
- dj_houdini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Market-share really does not interest me. Most people shop at Wal-Mart. So what. Ok Microsoft has 85% of the market-share... So that just tells me that Win/Tel machines are more COMMON. In my studio I use Windows, Irix and OSX. For me it like this. The Apple machines just work. Irix just works. The windows machines are a constant struggle. All you apple nuts out there are never going to convert windows users to the mac. Let it go. People will make up their own minds.
- HackWithRamzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Intel macs tomorrow... just wait. Put your money on it. I would if I had any!
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jasqwerty, here's your mistake. I'm not defending Apple or Steve Jobs or anyone else. I'm simply suggesting that you look for professional help.
- Gl4di4tor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thats a pretty large figure if u think about it.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's funny to see insecurities coming out from WinTrolls. I love it. Give me more guys....more!
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't MS have 95% of the market-share? What happen? Yeah, give it more time and that number will decrease a bit more... and then a bit more and a bit more. lol Times up WinTrolls. Apple's coming for ya.
- seriypshick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"All you apple nuts out there are never going to convert windows users to the mac. Let it go. People will make up their own minds."
In 6 month period I converted my whole family(10 people) + 7 other people. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I read the description and thought that it proved that Stevie was releasing an iPod video, but it doesn't. I wouldn't be suprised -at all- if they release their first intel product tomorrow - powerbook.
- dominiccarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is good news, If anything Mor epeople moving to Mac will make Microsoft up their game.
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YAY Great News
- captainjy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You mean, the bigger you get the more like Microsoft you will become! Come on people!!! Stevie Jobs is an even bigger weenus than Billy Gates! You just aren't getting it, the PC is going nowhere. MS is going nowhere. Apple is growing, great, but they aren't replacing Windows any time soon.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"jasqwerty, here's your mistake. I'm not defending Apple or Steve Jobs or anyone else. I'm simply suggesting that you look for professional help."
I concur. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Will these numbers ever grow to something substantial like 40-60%, without Apple selling a version of OSX for PC's?"
"...So what. Ok Microsoft has 85% of the market-share..."
"Didn't MS have 95% of the market-share? What happen? Yeah, give it more time and that number will decrease a bit more..."
jeez. you guys just don't get it. please, read the title again. "apple grabs 6.6% market share of US PC retail market..." we're talking hardware here--not software. that's like comparing apple's to (not windows)...oranges. in this market, apple's competitors are hp, compaq, dell, etc. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i don't see Apple systems running Windows... so you could say that Mac OSX has a 6.6% market share.
- il0vemymac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yes! Lets hope Apple keeps taking a bite out of Bill Gates' empire! This is news I've been wanting to see for a long time. Apple understands people use the computer for leisure too, not just stuffy office work. Apple also understands that people dont deserve horrible OS's plagued with viruses and spyware. Lets hope Apple's market share gets up to 15% by next year, which is feasible.
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Go Apple! The bigger you get the more Microsoft has to get their ***** together to make better products, and the same for you too. Better products all around! YAY! :)
- bedouin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Not knocking Apple, but why do Apple people feel its so important to post this kind of ***** on here every 3 months...."
Any computer user should be happy when Apple's marketshare increases, or Linux's for that matter. It's a sign of an MS hegemony (hopefully) deteriorating. - npacheco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Sorry *****, Microsoft has 0% marketshare - THEY DON'T MAKE PCS. This is hardware, retards.
- catcardz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0We have Apples and PCs where I work. Guess which ones cause the most problems - Apples! That is why they only have 6.6% of the market. If they worked well and weren't disgustingly overpriced, they would have more market share.
I don't see why this even matters - no one is posting the market share for PCs or Windows like its a big deal. People will buy the computer that they want and all you Apple lemmings need to keep your little cult to yourselves - you are worse than reborn Christians! - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Just wait till virus writers start seeing Apple having more market share, then you'll get your aparently non-exisant viruses/hacks for OS X..
- Ben - firecrafter695, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Go Apple! That makes me smile on the inside :)
- Sireg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Digg.com is a collection of Apple circle jerkers and trolls. I'm sorry. That is what it reall is.
- outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow, 6.6%? thats almost 50%! and then apple will rule the world!! (along with google of course)
- 16x9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0jasqwerty wrote: "APPLE ROCKETS DOWN OVER TEN PERCENT IN AFTER HOURS TRADING!!!

I LOVE SHORT SELLING!!!!
LOL!!!!!!!"
Seriously, dude. Get some help. You are now resulting to making the SAME (word-for-word) anti-Apple comments in multiple DIGG stories. - jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@16x9
You need to get off my and Jobs respective dicks, we need some breather time. LOL - heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Your computer is not your religion.
