2. WTF took them so long to fix it? - fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -5/+211. Depends which Mikey it is. If it's the guy from Look Who's Talking then that's just mean.
2. They were busy making iTunes on PC's to use as much resources as possible, to encourage upgrading to MBP's. - colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15"When you buy a mac does it come with anything better than stereo sound? And then are there cards that maybe give you up to 7.1?"
Quicktime can do 7.1. Apple ships the Airport Express which does 5.1, and there are numerous cards a USB dongles for the Mac that do 7.1. You just need content that is actually in 7.1. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18@MikeyisaFag
Comment dugg down for inaccuracy: "when I'm at the gym." - pintomp3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10huh? microsoft patented the ability to play music files at the same level?
- FearlessFreep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Article summed up as "Apple changed something so the volumes are different, but I don't know what or where or how" Not very informative
- chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8The only file format iTunes will covert when adding to your library is WMA files. The rest of the file formats are left untouched (assuming that they are supported by iTunes), unless you specifically try to convert them yourself.

The current line of Macs all contain toslink digital output capabilities which provide 5.1 surround. On Mac Pros and on the previous gen PowerMacs, digital audio out is accessible using a typical toslink cable. To connect to the rest of the line, toslink is embedded deeper inside the stereo mini-jack out - the one you use for headphones. To access this, you need a stereo mini-jack adapter attachment for the end of your toslink cable.
You can also access 5.1 surround out any of the HDMI ports. - jdent08, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5dude it has been that way since they first introduced it. That is why I DON'T use soundcheck. It's stupid and doesn't work.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5FLAC is a free codec. No need to wait for a whole OS update for that. They just need to bundle the codec with iTunes and support that file extension.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Supposedly Leopard has FLAC support. http://www.losslessaudioblog.com/2006/08/30/built-in-flac-support-coming-to-leopard/
- gsnedders, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3iTunes has no codec support in itself, but rather within QuickTime. They haven't, ever, to my knowledge added codecs except in major releases of QT, which normally come with OS updates. It will likely be introduced in Tiger a few days after Leopard ships.
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5"You can also access 5.1 surround out any of the HDMI ports."
Um, what now? - ElectricSoup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"What about FLAC?"
It's a good format for archiving; it's perhaps overkill for listening purposes. But if you want to play it, try these --
Windows:
http://www.foobar2000.org/
Mac:
http://sbooth.org/Play/ - Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Oh I hope so. While transcoding between lossless formats isn't harmful to the data, it's still a pain in the ass, and there are surprisingly few apps that seem to handle it. Other than burning it to CD and re-ripping it, obviously, which is a waste of a CD.
- ricksite, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I think all current models will output 5.1 surround from the optical output. I think it is tricky getting it to work in Quicktime but the DVD player passes output in 5.1 to the optical port. From what I have read, Quicktime doesn't have a codec to pass the 5.1 to the optical port.
- FrederikNS, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1One way is to select everything you have in your library and press delete, choosing not to delete the actual files, just deleting them from iTunes' library. Then simply add your music folder again.

Yeah, it turns out some Diggers actually care about their personal appearance, go figure. Digg me down for not wanting diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, I don't care, I'll live longer than you. :p
I also like being able to walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded, makes my days that much easier. - TheClassic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Is there anyway to force iTunes re-run the soundcheck? Apparently from the comments in the article this won't happen automatically, and the fix will only apply to newly added songs.
- Charron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Maybe this would resolve the issue I had with ¡Forward, Russia! songs. They're fine in iTunes, but always played at max volume in the iPod no matter what. Went to Rockbox because of it. (Which is better in the long run, easier to manage the music the way I want...)
- FreydNot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Firehed
Use Foobar2000 to convert the FLAC to wav. Import the wav files into iTunes. Set all the tags to your liking (so the proper names get used in the next step). Use iTunes to convert the wav files into apple lossless.
Then delete the wavs and archive the FLACs to DVD/CD for safe keeping. I'm still trying to fill up my 80GB iPod. - Synchro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have a firewire box that allows me to do 7.1 from the Mac. I have a nice set of klipsch computer speakers to plug into them too. it is nice when you have content that does 5.1+
Best choice for 5.1 output on the mac is VLC. the mac DVD player doesn't do it right if what i read a while back is correct, unless they have updated it recently. I switched to watching DVDs with VLC last year and have had no issues. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Albeit with a catch, you can play FLAC encoded music through the XiphQT component ( http://xiph.org/quicktime/ ) even today in good ol' Tiger. That catch is you can play only FLAC streams in a Ogg container (i.e. you can *not* play native FLAC files).
Well, I guess it's better than nothing. - longbow486, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Firehed
you dont need to waste a CD you dont even need a CD bruner, all you need to do is make an image and mount that as if it where a real CD
no waste of a blank and no CD burner needed - asciilogic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Why can't Apple just normalize the music sold on the iTunes Music store?
Steve Jobs said that they (Apple Inc) are responsible for encoding the music from the record companies.
If the files were normalized, it would sound a hell of a lot better...and we would not need to use Sound Check to actively modify the volumes.
I think I'll stick to ripping, normalizing and encoding my CDs for now. - haggie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Sorry, but somebody has to mention that this little bug is exactly why Apple's DRM is so insidious. Yes, this minor bug isn't a big deal, but what if Apple fails to fix a big, fat, nasty bug in a future rev of iTunes? How useful is that DRM'ed music library then?
- longbow486, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1*undocumented features*
- nickdanforth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I'm gonna have to test this out, but this has annoyed my in the past, so I guess we'll see . . .
- riley34717, on 09/12/2008, -0/+0http://westsounds.com claims to have a simply enormous catalog - over 200,000 albums online. This seemingly extensive catalog contains not just the latest and greatest, but also older tracks too - which lots of people (like me) are shopping for. I have had a tendency to lose CD's over the years, so this is a good way for me to reclaim (cheaply) the music I've already bought in the past.
- silga, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1mp3Gain FTW!
- UbuntuX, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Those were not bugs, they were features
- Hideokuze, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Hell Apple does something right for its users
- gordonm, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2LOL
My stupid joke about Apple = Digg down.
Uncomprehending stupid response to stupid joke by pintomp3 = Digg up!
I should have known better. Next time I'll make sure to notify y'all of any unauthorized attempts at humor at Apple's expense. - pretendex, on 10/11/2007, -10/+7When you buy a mac does it come with anything better than stereo sound? And then are there cards that maybe give you up to 7.1?
- josegutz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3What about FLAC? these champs will never get it right...
- break99, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3You SOB, how can you insinuate the presence of a BUG in iTunes? and long-standing to make things worst?
We all know mac software is PERFECT!
/obvious sarcasm - littleman, on 10/11/2007, -14/+5And now why don't I have 5.1 sound in windows while any other app can do it but quicktime???
- LoooongCat, on 10/11/2007, -13/+0I thought iTunes converted mp3's into some other file anyhow, same for AAC files.
- gordonm, on 10/11/2007, -21/+3It wasn't a bug. It was a feature. They only changed it because of M$ patent FUD.
- MikeyisaFag, on 10/11/2007, -27/+9I always enjoy when you find a little flaw thinking, "well that's kinda miniscule and annoying, but no one will ever fix it," only to have it fixed a little later when you've forgotten all about it. At least now I wont have to adjust the volume every time a new song comes on when I'm at the gym. :D
- SirBotchness, on 10/11/2007, -23/+3qwert more like QUEERT
