- bigredgpk, on 08/21/2008, -5/+159not buy, but rent as long as you keep paying $129 a year. You'll never own the music without hacking or stealing the music. So you may as well just keep using Torrents
- Hosalabad, on 08/21/2008, -10/+149Amazon's MP3 store to the rescue. I want to own my music, thanks.
- metallikop, on 08/21/2008, -7/+144I just can't digg a MrBabyMan submission, I have this uncanny feeling that this is a dupe.

Yeah, thought so. - evilpig, on 08/21/2008, -7/+107Ah, I'm gonna stick with the free alternatives. I don't RENT music.
- picpak, on 08/21/2008, -14/+90Anyone heard of the much cheaper alternative? It's called The Pirate Bay.
- brendanryder, on 08/21/2008, -14/+85"Apple would offer unlimited access to half of its iTunes Store--as of an October launch--for $129 a year, or $179 for an iTunes/MobileMe combo deal, in the U.S. only."
1. why only half the store? i hope the half there referring to is music only.
2. US only!?, you have got to be ***** kidding me. I'm sick and tired of apple releasing all this good ***** and making it US only. there are people outside of the US who buy music ya know! - DreadPirate, on 08/21/2008, -1/+53@brendanryder
1. Because probably only a few record companies have agreed to this, and they only cover half the music in the itunes library
2. Those record companies have only agreed to do this licensing for US customers to start, as a test. With music companies, you have to negotiate on a per-country basis because of the variety of music copyright laws in each one.
Those are only my best guesses, but they make sense based on other articles I have read about itunes and other music companies licensing music. - NathanCH, on 08/21/2008, -8/+55So for $129 I'm allowed to buy every single song in the iTunes store?
- ThE0eNiGmA, on 08/21/2008, -0/+32Limewire? You are joking, right?
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -5/+35$129 a year isn't too bad.
I would pay $129 for Soulja Boy to kill himself, but I think that's out of line. :( - Dylson, on 08/21/2008, -2/+29Ewww. Limewire. Excuse me while I go put my dick in a blender.
- MtheoryX, on 08/21/2008, -4/+28I've been hearing this speculation for years.
How about fixing the MobileMe and iPhone issues, then, and only then, even consider launching a new service? - Floods, on 08/21/2008, -7/+30iTunes: $129 per year.
Torrents: Free forever. - stellarceltic, on 08/21/2008, -5/+27I am not you are guy buddy?
- haloplayer9672, on 08/21/2008, -2/+23It's cheaper than the Zune pass which is $14.99/month. At least with the Zune pass you get all the songs and not half the store. Maybe this will prompt Microsoft to drop the price of the Zune pass?
- einrobstein, on 08/21/2008, -0/+20Not out of line at all.
- digitalpencil, on 08/21/2008, -3/+22$129 to 'rent' music?! and wtf does 'half of its iTunes store' mean?!? is that half the alphabet, or only new crappy music? screw this, i'll carry on torrenting music and buying what i like!
- Giga, on 08/21/2008, -3/+21Reasonable alternative? If I pay $129 for, say, 3 years, thats $387 invested into music. If I stop paying, I can no longer use that music. If I instead spent that on CDs or a different music store that won't invalidate current "purchases" I will have something to show for it at the end.
This means that if I have "bought" all the music I want and am not interested in the remaining content, I have to keep paying for the same content over and over. It is ***** pathetic to expect that from a customer. While this subscription would be a reasonable proposition for some consumer's buying habits, it is not for everyone. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -4/+22Make it lossless, DRM-free, then we talk.
- mecharabbit, on 08/21/2008, -5/+23Could you tell me your IP address, please? You can trust me, guy.
- forceuser, on 08/21/2008, -0/+18192.1.1.0
- aschmack, on 08/21/2008, -6/+22I'm not you're guy, buddy!
- bsonline, on 08/21/2008, -2/+17I've gotten two infringement letters in the last month. I'm going to have to switch to free "neighborhood" internet just to maintain my current quality of infringement.
- colinjnk, on 02/25/2009, -4/+18I'm not you're buddy, friend!
- freehunter, on 08/21/2008, -1/+15The problem is not on Apple's end, same with other companies who do similar. The problem comes in different licensing for different countries. Apple has to renegotiate their licenses or acquire new ones to offer different services outside the US.
- sirmasterboy, on 08/21/2008, -1/+151. Subscribe to iTunes Store
2. Download every song you want.
3. Strip out the DRM (there are many ways)
4. ???
5. Profit!
Seems easy enough, its what I've been doing on ruckus but that's even better because its free for people with .edu email. - abhiroop, on 08/21/2008, -2/+16I'm not your friend, guy!
[Four posts and not ONE is grammatically correct] - bwoodruff, on 08/21/2008, -2/+15brendanryder, do you honestly believe it's apple's choice? yea, they just decide: "we don't really like anyone out side of the US, so we're not going to sell to them." Makes a lot of sence. Obviously there is some 3rd party restriction on them.
- Thepirateking, on 08/21/2008, -0/+13127.0.0.1
- michaelGregoire, on 08/21/2008, -0/+13Let's see... every single "subscription" music service has failed....and Apple wants to follow that model?? Um.... yeah right.
- cthellis, on 08/21/2008, -1/+14Lossless, DRM-free, unlimited downloads...? On what alternate dimension do you see the RIAA agreeing to THAT?
- PrometheusBorn, on 08/21/2008, -2/+15I am not you are buddy friend?
- speakafreaka, on 08/21/2008, -1/+14Yeah.. I'd hate to think that my whole music collection is hinging if im paying the subscription.
Its tempting, but i dont want to buy albums i pay for as part of the subscription service - BlueStarr, on 08/21/2008, -1/+13Yahoo Music is no more! And you lost all the music that you paid for! LOL
- inactive, on 08/21/2008, -0/+12Exactly. I've downloaded so much free music I think I might be able to actually compete with iTunes' library...
- maexus, on 08/21/2008, -2/+13iTunes uses Quicktime to output audio/video. In a way iTunes is just a frontend library for Quicktime.
- deadbaby, on 08/21/2008, -3/+14Do you really think the guys doing the iTunes Store are the same ones writing firmware updates for the iPhone?
- HammondOrgan, on 08/21/2008, -3/+14I was really hoping they would at least make 9/16 of the store available! damn
- Aerandir, on 08/21/2008, -3/+13Mine is. My neighbor and his fabulous WiFi FTW :)
- vdogg89, on 08/21/2008, -1/+11so...you want to pay for a song twice?
- jbuberel, on 08/21/2008, -1/+10Except that you do not own any of your music (unless you wrote or composed it yourself). The audio CDs you bought only grant to you the right to listen to that music for non-commercial purposes. You don't own that recording in any real sense. Owning your own collection is just a ruse music companies use to get you to spend more money. If you really enjoy and consume large amounts of new music, renting is vastly more economical. Consider that $129 is equivalent to purchasing 10 CDs a year.
I have been a subscriber to Rhapsody.com for a few years now. Had I purchased every track that I have listened to in that time it would have cost me several thousand dollars. - CardinalFang, on 08/21/2008, -1/+10Getting hit with spyware in 3... 2... 1...
- TheXeno, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9One of the core reasons I roll with a Zune, (iMac owner running Boot Camp for various things including the Zune Software) is the subscription service. As long as there's a Zune Pass option, me and the Zune'll be BFFs.
A few things I'd like to highlight for the RENTING?! WTF crowd:
I can share the Pass with up to three friends/members of the family. $15/3 = $5. Five bucks split for access to unlimited streaming/downloading across 4 million tracks aint half bad at all.
Have cable TV? Why are ya okay paying for a monthly cable subscription with a bunch of content you don't own + commercials? How is a music subscription any different? Renting the whole store has opened up my musical experience further than if I had kept going on my timid album buying days. I'm far more willing to try out new things, discover more artists, and I have. Basically I listen to far far more music, and that's the goal right? It's about the journey, not the destination. Once ya get that idea in your head, you're golden.
If my hard drive takes a dive, crashes and burns, I won't be out my music collection and thousands of dollars. Because I rent all my music, I can go into the Zune software and restore my collection with a click of a button.
Friends/family who also subscribe to a Pass can sync my most played, recently played, and a few chosen songs via my Zune Card with their Zune, and listen to what I'm up to. If they like something, they can choose to keep the song right on their Zune, otherwise every time they sync their Zune it'll refresh with my latest stuff. I've already discovered some good stuff doing that. To me, this right here is one of the more compelling features introduced in the PMP space in the last 5 years. - cthellis, on 08/21/2008, -0/+9The iTunes selection is usually bar none. I mean, they don't always have COMPLETELY obscure *****, but they still have the largest catalogue that I'm aware of (over 8 million songs; IIRC, Rhapsody's at around 5 million), as well as leading in other options as well (podcasts, audiobooks, educational resources, "free stuff" in general...)
Just download the software and peruse it, if you want to be sure. I wouldn't place too large a bet on this going through anytime soon or in any half-assed form, though. For them to backpedal on subscriptions, they're going to want to do something "The Apple Way(TM)" with it, which means tying it into other devices, services, etc., and adding something more than "download whatever music you want" to it. Hence, even if they're in the market for it, I think it will take a long while to get out what they'd like. - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -2/+11The compliant is against submitters like MrBabyMan exploiting the digging system. Using huge digger "friends" list to bump up any topic they submit before the public has a chance to even look at it.
metallikop shows us that this article has already been submitted three times (as far back as 9 hours before this submission), yet MrBabyMan's version is the only one to make frontpage. - mCanada, on 08/21/2008, -1/+9MATT DAMON
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+8Good thing about the Zune pass is that it works with up to 3 other Zune's, so your whole family can use it or you and a few mates can use it. That and what ruddy mentioned - keep the tracks for as long as you want, even if you don't have a subscription.
- iwod, on 08/21/2008, -1/+9The Only thing i hate is MobileMe. Not its services. But the Name... It is simply horrible.
Otherwise i would like an iPhone+Itunes+iCloud subscription. -
