I hate Apple because they tell me in their ads that if I don't choose their product, it's because I'm not cool. I'm not interested in my computer being a fashion statement. They insinuate PC users are doughy dull suits while Mac users are young hip and cool. Why does what brand of computer I use have to be a statement about how I feel about myself?
I hate Apple because they keep telling me that my preferred OS doesn't work, yet I never seem to have the problems they constantly harp on about. I can't remember the last time my PC had a virus, or crashed to a BSOD, but by listening to a Mac commercial, you would think it happens daily.
I hate Apple because they charge much more money for the same exact hardware. They think that they know better than I do, if I need a firewire port, or want to copy/paste with my phone.
I don't actually hate Apple, I was just countering your argument. Hate is a strong emotion I reserve for things of much greater importance than a silly computer manufacturer. - harrisbradley, on 10/31/2008, -3/+37I'm a PC and I smoke bowls.
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -10/+38so you hate every single tech company out there... how insightful
douche - inactive, on 10/31/2008, -4/+30This article is lame just on the premise that brand "devotees" deserve to be studied. If you can´t make an informed decision about what you purchase, then you deserve the incoming ***** storm.
- MattB123, on 10/31/2008, -0/+24I'm a TRS80 and I just sit in the closet. :(
- johanrocks, on 10/31/2008, -0/+20The problem with completely rewriting Windows and removing legacy support is that it completely trashes one of Windows' biggest selling points: the huge library of software. I mean, look at Vista. A small % of programs and hardware didn't work, and there was a huge *****. Imagine if that was 100% of it.
If MS ever did this, they'd have to drop the Windows name and start an entirely new OS, perhaps side-by-side with Windows for a generation or two while older machines get phased out and new software gets written. - OliveStreet, on 10/31/2008, -3/+20The motherboard on my $6500 G5 just went out. It's costing $1079 for the board, and they wanted to charge me another $1200 for the dual processor component. The computer is just four years old, and while I use it for work, I run it very lean and I don't place non-business -related programs on it.
I've done some research and found that this seems to be a fairly common issue with PowerPC G5s. Naturally, the warranty has expired. I think this is ridiculous. A motherboard shouldn't just fry after only four years.
I would have been better off going with a Windows machine and XP Pro. But in order to do that, I'd have to buy a whole slew of Window apps, e.g., a new Creative Suite.
I wish I could shove my piece-of-***** G5 up Steve Jobs ass. - AboveandBeyond, on 10/31/2008, -5/+22Microsoft is the best, just look at bill gates donating billions for healthcare..etc and steve jobs? he is one greedy mofo.
- Zippo, on 10/31/2008, -25/+41I used to be a big proponent of Microsoft and Windows. However, over the past decade, there's been a notable lack of energy and effort put into their products. Windows still has its issues... But Internet Explorer is just a ***** disaster; the years between the release of IE6 and IE7 (all five of them) are a shining example of that. I believe a lot of the problem lies in management. The system and higher-ups stifle development.
Up until 2004, I generally had a distaste for Apple and the Mac. I thought they were terrible. Admittedly, my main experience prior to that year was with a friend's iMac G3 running OS 9... and I think a lot of Apple users out there will agree with me that OS 9 was just plain awful (at least compared to OS X). After going to school (for graphic design) and becoming fluent with Mac OS X and the Mac itself, I became both a Mac and Windows user.
XP was aging, Vista's launch was lackluster, and MS is still kind of stuck in a rut (Hopefully Windows 7 is the way out). There's also a special appeal to the Mac. They're as much about design and attention to detail as they are tech. So, between becoming a professional graphic designer and coming to prefer OS X over Windows, I became a full Mac user.
So, for me, the whole MS/Apple fanboy science is moot. My choice is based on experience and logical comparison. I'd like to see Windows 7 come out as a much-needed refresh for the OS, but I'm skeptical. I'm of the personal opinion that Windows needs to take a completely different route... a complete overhaul - much like OS 9 to OS X. Sure, it'll mean that all your apps will need to be recompiled or rewritten, but there's far too much legacy crap in Windows these days. Windows also needs to reshape their development community, so that developers have more incentive to make better apps and keep updating them.
Man, that was long-winded. - kidjay, on 10/31/2008, -9/+22want an artist's verdict?

- Jhonka, on 10/31/2008, -1/+7This is stupid. Love and hate are emotions we feel towards humans. Not corporations. I don't hate or love either product. I love my mother. I hate my boss. I prefer windows over macs - I dont hate Apple. Apple didnt rape your children, or steal money from you. It made a product. And while that product may not be what I enjoy using, I don't give a *****. I'm just sick of these crusader-like fanboys trying to get me to "see the light." I'm happy, leave me be.
- topflight, on 10/31/2008, -1/+7I develop for both Windows and Mac. Two things I've observed, primarily using my Mac for work and Windows for home:
A) Windows doesn't suck as much people says it does. It does some pretty good things.
B) Mac isn't as stable/easy to use as people says it does.
Moral of the story, go with what works for you. Some things I miss at home on my Windows machine when not on my Mac, and some things I wish the Mac made use of more that Windows does. At the end of the day, if you can play your games, listen to your music and watch your movies, and type a few documents here and there, maybe do a little bit of photoshopping and video editing, have an anti-virus installed, what's the big deal with what OS you use? - imitokay, on 10/31/2008, -0/+6I hope you get banned from life. I hate facebook apps

- SPThom, on 10/31/2008, -3/+7I don't know if this author gets the concept of the study... That love and hate share the same channels in the brain does not mean that by hating something, you secretly love it. I would think it's more simply that, the more devoted you are to a particular subject--be it your wife, your car, your favorite computer brand, whatever... The more active that part of your brain is when focused on that subject, and the more prone you are to loving or hating things frequently associated with that subject. (I.e. you love your wife, so you're more likely to HATE your mother-in-law than, say, a random stranger.)

- duckley, on 10/31/2008, -2/+6What a truly information-free article.
Jeez, the headline makes it look interesting, but the actual content is wishy-washy "who knows" crap. - thefinger, on 10/31/2008, -0/+4Now that's funny! Thanks! :)
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -2/+6You can upgrade the Windows ME that you're apparently still running straight to XP. MS has gotten a lot better over the years. I don't think they're even killing people and stealing their code anymore.
Also, XBOX is really fun. It really turned the MS image around and helped make them likable again. I think its great that Bill Gates and MicroSoft beat Steve and Apple to the punch in the gaming market. Its hip. Its young. And Apple totally missed the bus.
MS did Zune. I wanna see the AppleStation or iBox or something! - thefinger, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3Plus, animals tend to be brighter than many digg users.
- imitokay, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3All's fair in love and war
especially ***** TV commercials from both companies that are beginning to grate on me - JoshuaGross, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4That would be the most epic fanboy battle... imaginable. I don't think we could survive it.
- inactive, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4If Macs are as cheap as PCs I would buy one.
- TheGuruStud, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3No kidding. Really big lies. I can build a quad-core system for 900 bucks that apple charges 2500-3k.
And I could load OSX right on it (no driver problems when you pick the right hardware, plus more drivers are being made all the time. I can use better components than what apple offers) :) - fabriciom, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4More like averge joe the consumer with lots of cash.
- sirbeta, on 10/31/2008, -1/+4And you think the same can't be said in reverse?
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3My Dad loves macs/OSX and got one of the new Macbook Pro's. The battery charger causes the computer to overheat when sleeping. Just saying, as someone who has set up half a dozen macs and probably two dozen Apple products for him, I can definitely testify that Apple's record on defective products is far far from perfect. If a company never comes out with a defective product, its only because they are being too careful, and that's not a road to success.
- Sambora, on 10/31/2008, -0/+3Uh oh, better call the wahhhhmbulance!
Just buy a new Mac Pro instead. Face it, you now own a broken piece of old technology. It's like putting a $10,000 engine in a $4,000 Honda Civic. -
