Tell that to the Energizer Bunny. He keeps going and....well you know... - ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -15/+126It is refreshing to hear that others felt the same way as I did about how those ads portrayed "Apple and its users". As the article states, "Smug little twit" is about right.
- dirtyhipster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+66You don't see the taco bell dog anymore, not because it stopped being effective, but because they got sued for it being racist/stereotypical
- bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57They have creams for that.....
- danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -16/+71This shouldn't necessarily reflect negatively on Justin Long himself. He's a wonderful actor, but his character in this case was a bit annoying. I think that set of ads reached its full potential, anyways. Ad campaigns do have a set length of time in which they are effective, and then move on to annoying from that point. There's a reason we don't see the Domino's Noid or Taco Bell Chihuahua anymore. They became stale and fulfilled their use. Same goes for the Mac Guy.
- mazerrackham, on 10/12/2007, -4/+50I always identified more closely with John Hodgeman than Justin Long.
- dilbertmouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+35So, let me get this straight.. Apple ditched the Mac guy and kept the PC guy. Someone define irony for me.
- sporb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40head on! apply directly to the forehead. head on! apply directly to the forehead. head on! apply directly to the forehead. head on! apply directly to the forehead. head on! apply directly to the forehead.
- npinski, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37*cough* nerd.
- MacKrazyinKC, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Agreed. They were funny initially - then over time - became chaffing.
- ronnsprocket, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28i read an interview with just where he was saying he was having a hard time delivering the lines and not sounding to smug. He made it seem like he didnt want to sound smug at all. I'm sure if Steve ***** jobs had anything to do with these commercials, they werent smug enough. steve jobs is a smug *****. i will credit apple with an incredible industrial designer...and i mean incredible- and thats about it.
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I miss the Noid...
- biochem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I dunno. Wouldnt u think his smugness came from his lines? He was doing what he does, acting.. acting the way the director wanted. I dont think its his fault as much as the campaigns premise. I did like those commercials though, i think they did a great job at promoting apple.
- kamilX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Step 1: Hire Ellen Feiss to do all Mac commercials.
Step 2: Profit. - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Britney even got rid of K-Fed! The revolution is on!
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I like Apple, but I think "passive-aggressive" best describes those commercials.
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Hodgman is hilarious. Check out his book, "The Areas of My Expertise". It's chock-full of fake trivia and 700 hobo names.
- rotarychainsaw, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Power Mac. Apply directly to wallet.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15The kicker would be if PC Guy now plays the Mac Guy because he "switched", and they get a new PC guy or girl. Then the new Mac Guy (old PC guy) can say, "I remember when I was like you, but you don't have to take it anymore. You can switch to Mac and still run Windows!"
- ArchieAndrews, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah, my comment wasn't so much about the man but the image he ended up becoming. It was the character I eventually found irritating, not necessarily the actor.
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14FTFA: Meanwhile, the campaign's other principals, director Phil Morrison and journo-humorist John Hodgman, are both returning for another round of spots, according to sources.
I wouldn't be too quick to say apple's dropping the ads all together... - hayden.evans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15huh?
- LFAB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12somebody set up us the mel
- mrneutron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Fenderline, Rumsfeld, and the Mac Guy. Tough week for losers.
- iAlex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Where is that ad with the Linux guy? Kinda fun.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Though I am a diehard unapologetic Apple nerd... Hodgeman was not a good choice for portraying a product you're trying to get people to dislike. He's just too likable.
Though I didn't find Long as annoying as most did, I think everyone came out of those commercials liking Hodgeman better. - vvvv, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Fanstastic. First Rumsfeld steps down, now this clown will be gone from our TV screens. All we need now is for Chevy to stop running those John Mellencamp commercials and it'll be the trifecta of wonderful delights.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -17/+26Stupid commercial. The Mac Guy just struck me as the kind of person for whom creating a photo-filled notebook is fun as opposed to playing actual, you know, games.
- waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12@zephc
Then you realize your Apple Mac PC can't play Oblivion so well with decent image settings and resolution. The problem: your videocard. You upgrade your videocard to latest Geforce 7 or 8 series to find it works perfectly on your Mac while in Windows. But once you boot back into OS X you realize...uh...crap...what happened?...its not compatible with OS X - level, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think they started to realize that the guy playing the PC character started becoming likeable because he was dorky, funny, and more animated. I think this made him much more interesting. Run it too much and you will start to like the PC guy and think the Apple guy is just a snobnose *****.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Good, he's f'n annoying. Isn't it ironic that the pc guy is more interesting and funny than the mac guy in an ad promoting Mac?
- Arkonnan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I guess "Hi, I'm an ass" .. "and I'm a PC" wasn't working out for them.
- dave9999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Dudes, maybe he just got a Dell.
Sorry. - biochem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Also, if u saw him in the TV show "Ed", he was definitely not smug, infact he was the complete opposite.
- DirtyBrowncoat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I have to say good riddens. He reminded me of someone who works on the floor at the Apple store: arrogant, snooty, and knows nothing about Apple products beyond the different models and prices. The Apple Geniuses, however, are quite the opposite...
- cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15" It's funny, memorable, and efficiently lays out the advantages of Macs over PCs."..
what are the advantages, turning into a mac snob.. thinking your better than everyone else because you have a overpriced box, when the PC guy with the right deals could build the same thing for half the price and is completely customizable.
-- fanboys digg me down now.. you know Im right - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well here is the thing, they made the Apple dude seem smart and intelligent and they insulted the PC at which point created a feeling of pitty. So people naturally took a liking to the "underdog".
Instead they should have made PC sound arrogant and foolish the Mac smart, intelligent but innocent. In other words potrary themselves as being the underdog... which also would be more true, instead of making it seem like PC is already the underdog loser. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7but john hodgman was the deranged millionare for the They Might Be Giants venue songs, now THAT is something I can relate to.
- aurifex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"There's a reason we don't see the Domino's Noid or Taco Bell Chihuahua anymore. They became stale and fulfilled their use."
No, we don't see the Taco Bell chihuahua anymore because the beaners got mad that we stole their national toy dog and exploited it. Teehee. :|
Countdown to negative diggs in 3... 2... 1... - duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@danielrh9: True.. except for Mastercard "priceless" campaign.. that concept has been running for how many years now?
- mrmatchgame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Seems like the PC Guy upgraded himself and kicked his ass.
- consonance, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15You amaze me. Never since Bill O'Reilly have I heard anyone irrationally insult so many things at the same time. You are seriously a genius retard.
- red40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4this is because his career is as an actor. they don't do just 1 gig. he's currently filming Die Hard 4 with Bruce Willis among other projects.
- elknino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9accepted - $36,300,285 - lead role (AKA the "movie star")
this actor is well on his way to big comedy blockbusters. and the "few movies" he's been in are normally top notch. - cazoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5i like apple computers (although i am a pc user) but have always found those commercials and that actor incredibly SMUG.
smug smug smug smug smug. i just want to punch him in the face. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5 Yeah, John Hodgman is the one I paid attention to...Definitely funny and entertaining.
- Subcide, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8People complain about apples overpriced hardware and then suggest buying top of the line graphics cards? Thats hilarious.
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you ever saw Justin Long on the talk show circuit he is nothing like his character in the commercials. He is just an actor playing a role. Don't you know they told him to act that way. In fact Justin is not very computer savvy. Its a shame he will always be remembered as the arrogant Mac user from the commercials.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The Mac response - "Oh, I have a 360 in the living room for games. Say, hows that video driver coming along?"
PC splits in two at the waist and grimaces. "Just fine once I spend another $400 for another card!". - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My two cents to Apple marketing:
Everyone likes him and you're always talking about switching... So "switch" Hodgman's character! -
