- DeathJux, on 08/25/2008, -0/+17You use a download accelerator? Verily, I scoff at thee!
- kevL0CK, on 08/23/2008, -3/+20looking forward to Safari 4. i use Firefox now, but that's only because Safari doesn't support plugins. plugins work with my download accelerator. it's an easy choice.
let's hope Safari 4 is great. - emdanan, on 08/25/2008, -1/+15excuse me for the offense, but are you brainless?
Apple doesn't "sneak" things into your computer. When you run Software Update, you receive a detail of all the updates that are available, and you can choose not to take the ones that annoy you. You can even shut them away for eternity by using the menu.
The reason you should stop using Apple software is that you should stop using a computer altogether... - polumrak, on 08/25/2008, -1/+14Nothing really matters. Love is all you need.
- kraetos, on 08/25/2008, -0/+11Yeah.
- alx1507, on 08/24/2008, -2/+12webkit.org
that should be what safari 4 is, correct? as far as the engine goes at least. - coldfusion1970, on 08/25/2008, -1/+11Its my browser of choice, so it matters to me.
- TheCoreh, on 08/24/2008, -1/+11Is this Safari version already coming with SquirrelFish? (The new JavaScript interpreter)
- drcreek, on 08/23/2008, -3/+12Using the old Safari 4 now. Looking forward to nabbing this update from the torrents soon.
- dragonzmajic, on 08/25/2008, -6/+14They need to be working on the iPhone!
- bdash, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Amazingly enough, the WebKit nightlies allow you to disable the start page. In fact, the start page itself links to instructions on how to do it! http://nightly.webkit.org/start/about
- GothAlice, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7They do, you know, uh, have MULTIPLE DEVELOPMENT TEAMS. And these teams, generally, have NO CLUE what the other is doing unless the components are heavily (and I mean heavily) inter-related.
- polumrak, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7It is great. It's way faster than Safari 3 and even Firefox 3.0.1.
Still doesn't support add-ons. Never will. - polumrak, on 08/25/2008, -0/+7Those are not the same guys.
- eggsovereasy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6I just hope they add an option to open all new links in tabs instead of new windows.
- MacParrot, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Why does Safari not matter? All your graph showed was that it has increased 1/2 a percentage point since the beginning of the year. Everything has to start somewhere and Safari will do just fine.
- rebotfc, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6write an alias then
- sudowrestler, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5It would be tiresome if you had to type it every time. If you do it frequently create an alias for it in .bash_profile, like, alias firefox="open -a /Applications/Firefox.app".
- polumrak, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5Oh. I'm shamed.
But in my defence, who has time to read this sort of messages! - sudowrestler, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5open -a /Applications/Firefox.app http:/www.google.com
- usingpond, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5You're hopeless.
- Zippo, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4You just grab a long-winded article about absolutely nothing and then copy/paste a name or company into each line, don't you.
If not... you need help. Seriously. - lostczech, on 08/25/2008, -1/+5In that case, neither does Opera
- HolyChimp, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4@lostczech: We know.
- MtheoryX, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Safari 3 supports ad block and inquisitor, and that's all I really need.
As long as that's not broken, I see no reason why this won't be a huge improvement.
That said, as a Mac user, Safari looks like ***** under Windows; so does iTunes. - polumrak, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Yes, but Safari 4 makes the engine work with the whole OS, like, say, Dashboard (hence post-installation reboot), and has some great new features (like that useful "Save as web application..." feature no-one needs and a wonderful "I don't have to look at webkit's nighties page at ever start" feature).
- wilhel1812, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3uhm, i downloaded from apple and i didn't pay a cent...
moron. - GothAlice, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4Uh… the developer menu ain't new, nor are several of the JavaScript options. WTH?
- joshualamgroup, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4that's stupid, it's for free anyways.. why go for torrents?
Yes, just sign up for a free developer account.. you'll get Safari4. - coldfusion1970, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3The only plug-in i need is Inquisitor, so lets hope it doesnt break support for it.
- joshualamgroup, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4It is better, I have the Developer Preview..
and Acid3 Score is 100! :)
Better than FF3, IE7, Opera 9.51 - ungamedplayer, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3All good points I'm sure, throw in a few enters in that first paragraph, along with a dash of less paranoia and you might be able to convince some people.
- NotaFanboy87, on 08/25/2008, -1/+4you can... look harder in preferences...
- coldfusion1970, on 08/25/2008, -4/+6Maybe you have a faulty phone, mine is working fine.
- Charlotte_Web, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2The big finale?
- gregburkman, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I'll drink to that. I have about a half-hour while my iPhone backs up.
- chrisbarr, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2Just middle click on your links to open them in new tabs. Works in every browser.
- utnow, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2@charlotte_Web: because how else are you going to run 300 programs in a single executable?
- HorseloverFat8, on 08/25/2008, -1/+3That's because it's unreleased. Later builds of those browsers do a lot better too.
- joshualamgroup, on 08/26/2008, -0/+2look who's the moron now..
- Smoozle, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2The developer panel is *significantly* improved. Also, unless you are running a recent WebKit nightly build all of the javascript "options" are very much new.
- Smoozle, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't say fine, because with every patch Apple seem to fix one (or a few) tiny annoyance and introduce at least one new. But by far I'm not seeing a tenth of what you people are whining about.
(e.g. in 2.0.0. and 2.0.1, at least for me, MobileSafari was very crashy when suspended (likely couldn't manage to flush cached pages to "permanent" storage within 5 sec. of losing focus and was killed by the watchdog timer). In 2.0.2 this is fixed, but the "doubleclick-the-home-button" iPod controls are randomly laggy and sensitive to the position of the touch. On the other hand, I've never had any issues with HSDPA or EDGE, never had a call dropped, and never had any problems with reception (even in a bombshelter basement, which really surprised me).) - MtheoryX, on 08/25/2008, -0/+2This is an update for a Developer's Preview.
If you are not a developer, then maybe you're correct and should stop using it.
The updates, by and large, are rolled together. It's how they do things, and if that disturbs you, there are other OS's to pick from, and no one here will be upset.
If you're referring to Safari 4 altogether, just turn off your automatic updates, or manually uncheck things you don't want installed in the updates. Not very difficult. - ChinezePanda, on 08/25/2008, -7/+8Fix the 3G/EDGE Bug
Fix the dropped calls.
Fix the ***** reception
Fix the laggy keyboard
Fix the broken apps.
Fix .ME
JUST FIX THE DAMN THING! This is getting absurd! - jonsterling, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Oops. My bad. You can download it without paying. Just register as an ADC member for free.
- Smoozle, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1drcreek, MtheoryX, pretty much the only thing you get from Safari 4 that you can't get with the WebKit nightlies is the "webapp" mode and it is by far nonessential (actually, in my opinion, it's a waste of developer resources). Torrenting something that is open source and free is borderline retarded.
- Charlotte_Web, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Not 300 programs... Add-Ons are enhancements. Here's some of the Add-Ons that I'm running:
Better GMail - because I'm so freakin' tired of moving my signature ABOVE the quoted emails.
Window Resizer - helps me see what my web pages look like at varying resolutions
Web Developer - invaluable for debugging the CSS of web templates
Flashblock - I only recently added this one; I now realize how great it is to selectively activate Flash content - Bend2, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1No need for /Applications with -a, it looks by default in this folder. So just open -a Firefox.app http://www.google.com
Note that with zsh you can have completion so that you don't have to type "Firefox.app" (see http://sage.ucsc.edu/%7Ewgscott/xtal/wiki/index.ph ... - rowlodge, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1how about a combo "safarifox"?
- Jabo4, on 08/25/2008, -0/+1Set 'Open Link from Applications' to 'in a new tab in current window'.
And then in terminal
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
That should treat links just like firefox. -
