- AFelsinger, on 01/14/2009, -1/+46This is not a dupe... it corrects previous submissions that report Apple suing Wired, which is not actually the case.
- Khast, on 01/15/2009, -6/+44If I were to buy a copy of OSX and I so happen to desire to install it on say non-Apple hardware....what really can they do to me?
Apple :WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH you can't do that, it's not Apple! - geoken, on 01/15/2009, -2/+34FTA
"A similar legal complaint was delivered last November to users of a wiki called Bluwiki who were seeking to modify the iTunesDB index file to enable iPod touch and iPhone syncing with Winamp and Songbird instead of iTunes." - hamobu, on 01/15/2009, -23/+51Apple is like an evil bastard child of Microsoft and RIAA.
- lngarrett, on 01/15/2009, -3/+31Reading this article on a MSI Wind... running OS X.
- erikerikerik, on 01/15/2009, -7/+30hehehe, dug, while using my mac book pro running windows7
oh the humanity. - mmittimm, on 01/15/2009, -6/+27Nope mostly because Apple is and always has been primarily a HARDWARE company whereas Microsoft is a software company. If anyone can buy any machine and throw OSX on it then Apple's bound to start losing tons of profits. You'd be flipping out about this too if you were Apple.
- bjornski, on 01/15/2009, -7/+23And yet the guys at Microsoft are the "dictators of the closed system".
LOL - zafayar, on 01/15/2009, -14/+30What really amazes me that anytime that is story that looks down on Apple, all the apple worshiping fan boys are no where to be found. But I can understand at some level, that the only way to keep "Apple" perfect and keeping on the worship is to close the eyes to things that one does not want to see.
PS: Apple Sucks, and they should stop telling me what to do with the Hardware I own and the software that I have a license to use (in any way I want - from running on a netbook to flushing my toilet). - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+14BREAKING: That move won't stop most people from installing OSX on their netbooks.
- cbabraham, on 01/15/2009, -3/+15mirror of the videos? anyone?
- BuckCynnie, on 01/15/2009, -8/+19I am running a Hackintosh and love it, but I installed it from a retail DVD that I purchased...and my PC now sports a lovely sticker from Apple...thus making my computer Apple branded and interpretedly legal!
Don't pirate the OS, go buy it! - sirbeta, on 01/15/2009, -1/+12From what I've seen, most people run Hackintosh machines just because they can. It's interesting, and it's basically a big "***** you!" to anyone telling you that you can't do it.
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -10/+20Why would you buy and support an OS that doesn't want to support you using it? Apple purposely tries to make OS X run exclusively on Apple hardware, therefore you are ***** to them, so why would you give them money?
- haikuFU, on 01/15/2009, -6/+15I love my MacBook Pro, but Apple is a 10 pound sack of dicks.
- briLo, on 01/15/2009, -2/+11Seems that with OSX, garageband, ilife, imovie, itunes, quicktime, iwork, aperature and mobileme they're a software company as well.
Seems to me if you could buy any machine and throw OSX on it they it would say that they truly stand behind their software. Seems to me that they're flipping out because the potential loss of profits....which would make any company flip out. - freefm, on 01/15/2009, -1/+10that why it's called a hackintosh, there's hacking involved.
- Mutiny32, on 01/15/2009, -3/+11So let me get this straight; Apple takes an OS partially based on a free license, closes it completely off, and then tries to threaten everyone who tries to use it on other computers not made by them?
*****. - ThinkBox, on 01/15/2009, -0/+8Because fanboys are *****, notmatter who they are for.
I love apple. I love a lot of what they do. They are a great company to have come so far and do so much with so much adversity.
Yes they are expensive, and yes they make wildly unpopular decisions sometime.
I love film, and i've loved film since i was a little kid. I hated macs. When my dad told me that i should get a mac because i was into the arts, i just turned around and left the room, how dare he mention that? Macs suck, they are for people who dont know how to manage a pc. Well I got a G5 dual 2.0 Ghz PPC, and I started learning Fincal Cut, working with videos I shot at a young age working thrugh the OS, and something amazing happened. I saw that what I thought was OSX and what i thought Apple was representing what the complete opposite.
You see, you know a LOT about windows in the 95-98-earlyXP days because you have to spend so much time fixing it and hacking it to just perform how you wanted. After all that work i had a sense of pride in it. And when i saw someone who didnt have virus protection or had pop-up issues, i just laughed. And when i moved to mac i felt like a newbie again.... until that day it clicked.
That's just my personal story. Ill get buried or ignored but that doesnt bother me. I'm just glad to talk about i. and while i type here on my 4th Mac since that first time, I'm happy, so very happy i made the switch. And when ever i have to see that start bar again, it just makes me feel worn out and tired. - jammyfred, on 01/15/2009, -4/+12Can you say 'Streisand effect'?
- hamobu, on 01/15/2009, -5/+12An arbitrary distinction.
BTW, there is no such thing as intangible property. - dandonia, on 01/15/2009, -1/+8You don't have a license to use OSX on anything buy a mac. The reason people aren't on here sticking up for it, is because it isn't something that benefits customers - that doesn't mean OSX is more preferential to Windows and it doesn't mean the MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, iPhone and iPod are disliked - just one of the companies policy's.
People can hate a company but love one of the products and vice versa.
Microsoft was one of the most hated companies in the world - XP and the 360 are two products the public love.
- ryanisnotsuper, on 01/15/2009, -5/+11Since Apple started being a bunch of *****.
- BuckCynnie, on 01/15/2009, -3/+9I don't care who they are or what they think of me, I like my Hackintosh and I will pay -because that is what we legal and responsible software users do- to use the OS. Just as I don't care who writes code for Linux or Ubuntu, I like the OS and that is all that matters.
- newbill123, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5Wired gets a lot of attention, web hits, and ad revenue from a popular video like this.
I'm glad the Hackintosh information is widely distributed on the web, but it does bug me that Wired is profiting from its dissemination. There are enough places to find it for free already. - DigitalisAkujin, on 01/15/2009, -3/+8+1 for /. terminology
- MScrip, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5> "The true problem with that is the Apple OS cannot support hardware worth a *****, it chokes a lot on anything that OSX wasn't specifically developed for."
That's kinds the whole point of OS X... it's designed to run on Apple hardware.
Obvious much? - bjornski, on 01/15/2009, -2/+7They tried to let people license their OS and run the hardware of their choice in the 80's.
It just about destroyed the company. They won't do it again.
You will use Apple hardware or you aren't allowed to run it. - mrBitch, on 01/16/2009, -1/+6Wow, dugg down for fact?
Where's the arguments and the discussion? - Elranzer, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5Locking hardware to software is Apple's wet dream. They can't have anything that disrupts that, even if it's legal! Even though you own it!
- drplump, on 01/15/2009, -2/+6Dont worry MacOSX is so powerful it wont even run on anything less than 2000 dollars.
- evilrobot, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5actually - i built mine for $273.00
http://onefallinghope.com/2009/01/11/my-new-triple ...
the simple fact is that a lot of people dont have the brains to do it themselves for $400 - or any price. :)
....Those folks are potential customers that Apple is missing.
...For me PERSONALLY to buy an official Apple Netbook; the magic number couldnt be more than $500.00 - but others are willing to pay more; i'm sure.
Surprised that i got dugg down - presumably by "my own kind" for stating a fact. - robbie32, on 01/15/2009, -6/+10If Apple just embraced this and started allowing for these things to happen in the first place and adopting the ideas instead of suing anyone that come up with anything useful and needed, they would be a much more popular company (among geeks at least), and the financial rewards would be nice too.
- mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5@ MacParrot RE: " If you want to install OS X on non-Apple hardware, I say go for it. But at least be smart enough NOT to include links to hacked software. I'm very tempted to try out EFI X's solution which allows you to install OS X on some basic hardware (though still somewhat limited) without a single hack. Software update works too."
Absolutely spot on.
Apple has not made any legal moves against the hackintosh community.
Apple doesn't care, unless you are making money doing it.
In this case, this guy gets PAID for writing an article on step-by-step instructions.
This goes for Psystar as well, Apple only prosecute if you are trying to make money off their IP.
Go ahead and install OSX on your netbook, since Apple does not give a ***** what you do with your hardware or software.
As soon as you try turning this into a business is when Apple gets interested in what you are doing. - bitterbug, on 01/15/2009, -3/+7I don't get the jewish reference. Did you eat a bad matzoh ball or something?
- Thorpe, on 01/15/2009, -2/+6Apple sure are going through those uploaded videos and requesting them to be removed. Where can one see the video?
- PacoBell, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4=O That's a lot of unhappy guys!
- hamobu, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4What does RIAA have to do with the reasonableness of my argument?
- aserer511, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5Apple: conform differently
- t3st3r, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4> Locking hardware to software is Apple's wet dream.
That's where Trusted Computing goes. If CPU is unwilling to run unsigned code, you have to live with their damn software without any rights to choose something else. Full implementation of Trusted Computing does exactly this. And the day will come Apple will use this crap to eliminate your freedom. Trust? No, it is not about YOU can trust to hardware. It is about vendor can trust to hardware that it restricts you. Freedom of choice is worst enemy of these corporate fiends. - mmittimm, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5Well I used the word primarily for a reason, they have software but i'd be willing to bet they make a hell of a lot more from hardware.
- JROXZ, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4***** that intangible bastard child!!!
- t3st3r, on 01/16/2009, -0/+3Let's give you +1 for sense of humor =)
- hamobu, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3Kind of like a mob, right?
- dandonia, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2CenterBlack: If they paid for the OS - they are paying their way. Seriously what if they want a better computer than apples best computer - but they want to run OSX. They bought a copy of it, didn't pirate it -how can you be against them using it.
If you don't think they make enough money from the OS to fun itself - you are an idiot. If 3 million people bought OSX at £83 - that would be £249million, if that isn't enough to finance 2 years worth of software development - they are doing something wrong at Apple. Considering it sold 2 million copies in it's first weekend on the market - I think 3 million is a tad concervative - don't you? - FredFredrickson, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2If you paid for Mac OS X, you should be able to install it on whatever system you want / can. End of story.
- t3st3r, on 01/16/2009, -0/+2Apple will be a M$ number 2 if they will ever have chance to grow bigger. The only difference in "think different" slogan is that you have to pay to Apple rather than to MS. That's where difference ends...
- gregcotten, on 01/17/2009, -0/+2Two words: Streisand Effect.
