- HookmasterCH47, on 02/10/2009, -2/+391. DVR with Apple-esque user interface (am I the only one tired of the ***** DVR user interfaces?)
2. iTunes support for TV / Movies / Music (basically current AppleTV)
3. Open up support for my codecs
4. Blu-Ray... hell we're making a damn shopping list right? - botanist, on 02/10/2009, -1/+25The survey is down already? That sucks...
Streaming video services (Hulu, etc)
Tags instead of, or in addition to, Genres
Stability (my ATV restarts randomly...)
Better sync intelligence, if I exit a movie before I can select a new movie iTunes and ATV are syncing even though nothing has changed
DVR would be nice, but that would mean the ability to jack tv/cable/sat into the unit which doesn't benefit me by much - AngelBunny, on 02/11/2009, -0/+13Apple is traditionally a hardware company that makes software to aid its hardware sales but to me when I see Apple TV I see a company selling TV shows and music on itunes and hardware to aid their software sales.
If apple wants apple tv to be successful they need to make it open like a computer were people can openly install any software they want on the device. It should also support 1080p decoding (if it doesn't already) and their software should support RSS feeds as well as plugins to anyone can add content for media they want to view. Why isn't hulu on apple tv? Why isn't revision3 RSS feeds on apple TV? boxee is the future. It isn't perfect but it is the right direction. Now if apple would only see this and open up the apple tv as more of a multimedia center PC they would sell more. I mean, $200 for a multimedia center PC is awesome! except it has to be hacked to run what the user wants like a PC. It is way to handicapped without modifications that should come standard. - jonlarge, on 02/11/2009, -4/+14I guess even Apple needs help figuring out why somebody would want one.
- dullnation, on 02/11/2009, -0/+9Anyone got a link to that story?!!
- spike1201, on 02/11/2009, -0/+7I use the AppleTV for all my movie rentals. It infuriates me that movie titles come and go in the iTunes store. I can't tell you how many times I've noted that a certain movie has been added to iTunes, only to find it missing when I finally want to sit down and consume it. I know there are studio deals all over the place and it makes licensing complicated as rights come and go to and from devices and networks and whatnot. Well that's dumb. That licensing is too complicated and it's hurting their business. This is the only device I rent from, and I'm not alone. If it gets removed, I ain't watching it here and I ain't seeking it out elsewhere. It's business lost.
- Kwinti, on 02/11/2009, -1/+7That will never happen. Give up. The whole point of Apple hardware is that Apple controls the whole ecosystem, resulting in a seemingly flawless user experience. If people can install whatever they want on the box, they're left with nothing more than an underpowered computer.
Think what you want of Apple, but at least understand that they have a plan. - snowdog, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Wouldn't make more sense to ask those who haven't bought the AppleTv what they would like?
- dmax801, on 02/11/2009, -1/+6Combine the ATV with the Mini.
Large Hard drive (1-2 TB) so I can store all my music and other media on it.
DVD/Blu Ray capability.
Output to my HDTV.
Boxee-like functionality but the more simple Apple-like interface (maybe like Front Row, maybe better).
Full (FULL) control through the iPhone for free.
Gaming controls so it can give Xbox a run for its money
Reasonable price, instead of the typical Apple extreme cost - utnow, on 02/11/2009, -2/+7He didn't explicitly mention it, but I feel pretty certain #5 was an unspoken "It shouldn't be a cluster-*****" which pretty much eliminates any windows-based solution. sorry bud.
- robdazomba, on 02/11/2009, -3/+8What part of "DVR with Apple-esque user interface" didn't you understand?
- AngelBunny, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5that is kind of the point. a $200 computer that tiny is worth the money.
- thcobbs, on 02/11/2009, -6/+11That doesn't
- Take up half of your tv hutch
- require Windows
- cost but a fraction
- have noisy ass fans that distract from viewing
- fubar it self on new-years day
- look like an (ugly)brick - j0hnc0ry, on 02/11/2009, -0/+5Boxee is the best thing that's happened to the appletv. I hacked mine before boxee, but between all the different apps none have compared to boxee. I am not a huge fan of the boxee interface, but the functionality more than makes up for it. Apple needs to create an app store that has programs that are similar to the functions that boxee offers. The ability to stream iptv makes it a fully functioning piece in the entertainment suite which has replaced digital cable for me. Beef up the hardware, keep it small form factor, add an app store and call it a day.
- rockstar1o9, on 02/11/2009, -3/+7I've been using XBMC for the past 5 yrs (back to the days of XBMP). I'd love to see an AppleTV that sort of XBMC / MythTV combo device that builds on the best of each platform with movie/TV on demand.
Other wants:
1. lots of input and output ports
2. IR blaster
3. a huge HD and/or eSATA port
4. gigabit ethernet port
5. iSight/iChat/Skype support
6. some sort of extended info integration. like access to IMDB/rottentomatoes so i can lookup things for movies i'm watching. or a link to the stats for the guys on my fantasy team while i'm watching a game.
7. cheaper digital purchases/rentals.
8. the ability to purchase a physical copy of a movie or tv show and have it shipped to me but i get to download and watch a digital copy of that same show/movie immediately.
9. the ability to play casual games - like xbox live arcade
10. feeds for RSS, stock quotes, sports scores, snow and weather reports, email notifications, news headlines, facebook news feed...etc
11. pandora
12. to take #9 one step further - apple tv apps/gadgets like iphone apps so new innovative uses can be developed. - t0ny, on 02/11/2009, -1/+5I thought they were going to drop the whole windows thing this time. Damn. Maybe next time.
- utnow, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4I think if the AppleTV could stream Hulu videos... and other networks got on the bandwagon and started packaging their content this way... then I could give a rats-ass if the thing had DVR on it or not.
Video on demand is the way of the future :) - microview2007, on 02/11/2009, -1/+5I've been down the DIY HTPC road and here is what I learned.
Spend $$$ on what is basically a high end gaming PC.
You have to spend hours finding and downloading content from bittorents.
Navigate crappy interfaces with half ass working remotes.
You have to constantly upgrade drivers and the interface, plus updates to Vista's Media Center.
Spend hours reading forums to keep up on the latest HTPC happenings.
Spend money on hard drive space to archive content you'll only watch once.
It's just not gf/wife/mother-in-law user friendly. - blur13, on 02/11/2009, -0/+4well apple tv may not be for everybody but it works for me. i haven't had cable for 3 years because i refuse to pay for bundle packages that give me access to hundreds of channels only of which a handful i watch. so apple is my source of entertainment. i torrent my shows, convert them to the proper format and stream them using my apple tv...all in hd.
- carlosos, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3There are only two things that it needs for me to buy it and recommend it to anyone.
1) Better codec and container format support
2) Internet TV support (hulu, netflix, or even something else that is better than those 2 sites)
If I think about it more. Even just hulu support alone would be enough to buy it. - jrm125, on 02/11/2009, -10/+13Dude...you just built a Media Center PC
- bigredgpk, on 02/11/2009, -1/+4I hope they got some good feedback before ppl ***** all over the answers. I love my Apple TV, it is great fun to hack around with and is perfect for watching XviD videos on the TV. But I would kill for native Hulu and other streaming services, pluggins would be great, and how about a little more horse power?
- FireSlash, on 02/11/2009, -7/+10Ok... seriously?
I love Apple as much as the next fanboy, but do we SERIOUSLY need "in-depth coverage" of a SURVEY? - spike1201, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3Because Apple never takes surveys seriously. They almost always boldly carry forward in secret and reveal to you what you want when the product is finished, right or wrong. Apple asking for feedback is indeed news!
- robdazomba, on 02/11/2009, -3/+6Yeah but unfortunately Windows also comes with Windows.
- KSUdesigner, on 02/11/2009, -2/+4I'd argue that they are a software company. Nobody would buy a Mac if it only ran Windows. The iPhone wouldn't be as successful without OSX. The iPod is not special because of the hardware, it is special because of the software. There are plenty of mp3 players with good, if not better, hardware, yet the iPod is number one. Movies and music are also software.
- ttamshadbolt, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Hey, reported
- klowngoblin, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2well it woul dbe best if it had....
2TB of storage (HDDs are cheap now a days)
a CPU powerful enough to encode tv shows on the fly to Xvid or another codec that has a small footprint but maintains good qualty
lots of ram for encoding
easy to use interface
plays any codec known to man kind (even the xbox 1 can do this with XBMC)
networkable so you can stream stuff over the network
internet radio
internet TV
under $800
small formfactor (shuttle size or standard recv size is ok with me)
video card at least as fast as a 9800GT 1024MB video ram so you can play games, and bluray isnt an issue at all
bluray writer to rip and burn
oh wait i just decribed my own HTPC - eroticpie, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2the only thing wrong with boxee is that it just uses the processor and no video acceleration, so it stumbles once you try to play any 720p stuff
- 955701, on 02/11/2009, -2/+4Hulu (boxee ui sucks big time), better heat dissipation (a stand? The big block legos are working for now), and let me plug crap into the usb port such as a USR fax modem to use with hylafax. Why build your os from unix if we can't use it?
- zbeast, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3These type of devices are always compromises, they only play a small selection of media types, they
go out of there way to prevent you from archiving your content and or they add or have some type of drm on your media.
I just found it easier to build a HTPC.. I can have as much hard drive space as I want, I can play video from any source
in any format and I can copy that content to any of my computers or anyone else's computer.
That type of device you'll never get from an major equipment manufacture. - eroticpie, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2hi-def MKV support, kthx
I hate having to convert to MP4 to play 720p movies - Neiby, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3Does anyone own one? I know lots of people into techy gadgets of all varieties including a few Apple lovers, but I don't know a single person with AppleTV. I've never even heard of any of my friends mention anyone that they know who has it.
- vuduchild, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2I hope alot of responses that are given go along the lines of "give the team at xbmc a gajillion dollars and let them create the new apple tv"
- goodfish, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3As far as installing other software, XBMC works.
http://www.xbmc.org/wiki/?title=XBMC_for_Mac_on_Ap ... - t0ny, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Mythtv has automatic commercial skipping. :)
I can't live without it now. - VyRuZ, on 02/11/2009, -1/+3How quick you ***** are to criticize, eh?
- mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Kind of like the Zune?
- mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2Wow, thank you!
The only thing that had been missing was a childish tantrum from an immature person with nothing better to do than make moronic postings... but then you came along and took care of that.
Thanks for stepping up to the plate and filling in where you're needed. - mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1+1 for a great post.
- BDJC, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1Don't forget the movies that are only available to buy, but not rent. The selection is sometimes lackluster at best, in drives me insane when I find a movie I'd like to rent, only to find out that I can't.
Otherwise, I love my ATV. Use it daily. - mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2XBMC is now PLEX :
http://www.plexapp.com/ - mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1That's actually pretty spot on. That's the HTPC experience in a nut shell.
- weirdscience07, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1No, it is not. Plex, like Boxee, is an off-shoot of XBMC.
- pamuckraker, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations regarding Skype on AT&T's wireless network. For more information on this issue, here is an article to read: http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/Iphone-S ...
- DanCallen, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1All Apple has to do is buy Boxee & they just became the iPod of set top boxes!
- mrBitch, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2@ KSUdesigner RE: "I'd argue that they are a software company. Nobody would buy a Mac [hardware] if it only ran Windows. The iPhone [hardware] wouldn't be as successful without OSX. The iPod [hardware] is not special because of the hardware ... "
Um, every Apple product you mentioned is HARDWARE. - tr909, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1I've had one for the past few years. When I first got it and all it did was play what you had in your iTunes, I put it in the closet. But after hooking it up 5 months ago with the new ability to rent movies. And Boxee support for internet "TV". I watch it daily. Equally as much as DirecTV. My only gripe is wanting the movies in 1080 instead of 720, but it's instant 5.1 HD movies to watch. Works well for me.
I also added a second one downstairs as a basic music server. - maxlightz, on 02/11/2009, -0/+1got to agree with your point their bro
- maxlightz, on 02/11/2009, -1/+2now if only they would do this with the iPhone and ***** COPY & PASTE!!!
