- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Does anyone else think the U2 ipods look like crap? I'd rather get a normal looking device but still get the charitable thing.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Even if U2's music hasn't become socially relevant anymore, I still have to respect someone who's willing to devote that time and effort to helping out the less fortunate, even if it's only lip service, photo-ops, and hanging with politicos. He could be using that time to snort coke off a dead hooker's ass or drinking himself blind.
Eddie Van Halen? Lookin' at you... - cptpike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I know this is off topic so, digg me down. Does anyone else think that Eddie Van Halen now looks like Gollum from lord of the rings?
http://static.flickr.com/34/111932308_d37eca25c6_m.jpg - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah, I forgot all about how U2's from ireland, and all irish are apparently associated with the IRA, thus making U2 a terrorist supported rock band.
Thanks for reminding us.
Everyone keep an eye on Liam Neeson.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U2 - Read the entry on WAR for people who believe the OP. - crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Or he could be a nothing on digg, copying the main idea of someone elses comment to try and soak up some of the comedy.
bdurkin? Lookin' at you... - Skullpop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You.. mean to say that by supporting people who happen to be Irish, Apple's supporting the IRA, and therefore terrorism?
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9You're free to donate money to the charity withouth buying a funny AIDS laptop.
- bdurkin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Eddie Van Halen? Lookin' at you..." that's too funny but you are right. But he could be even worse than not doing anything and be like a crazy scientologist telling people that AID's is a state of mind and not a disease.
Jenna Elfman? Lookin' at you... - OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Please clarify your statement.
- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What on earth are you talking about!? Supporting the fight against AIDS is supporting terrorism? You're comment doesn't make any sense at all.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sorry for the slightly off-topic but will the event today be streamed in any site?
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The flower iMac was the most awesome computer I've ever seen. Did I buy one? No, I have self respect. But if they would have made an iMac with skulls and bats and maybe some dead rats I would have totally bought that. (maybe I'm a sucker)
- rupansensei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That's a pretty dumb ass accusation.....what evidence to you have for such an outlandish claim?
- reverendcutterx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The IRA were so fond of U2 they tried to have them round for a private concert:
http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/story.jsp?story=629578
That aside, I'm surprised that a company so painfully hip hooks up with groups of this era. It's all a bit 'Dad' to me and I'm not exactly a young-un. - mouthster, on 10/12/2007, -16/+20Yes, and besides that, who listens to U2 anymore anyways?
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7There's only one brand that should be associated with a red iPod. And that's Ferrari.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Right, cause NO ONE rocks as hard as Bono. When I think edgy, hard-hitting, make-me-want-to-go-buy-an-ipod, I think BONO. Did I mention Bono's tears cure cancer? Praise be Bono, let us lift his name on high.
Bono bless you all. - OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Seems like it would be better to just buy a less expensive phone, like $150 phone and cut them a check for $100, if you really care so much. Really donating money shouldn't be about being recognized for it. You should do it out of the kindness of your own heart and fairly anonymously. Seems kind of cheesy to carry around a red phone/ipod/laptop so other people will recognize you as someone who donated to a famous cause. (Kind of like those livestrong wristbands).
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow apple, how innovative.
I hope there's something more to offer today besides this and downloadable movies - pimterry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The moto phone isnt just a straight donation, when you use it it sends 5 or 10% (cant remember) off to the charity as well - at least it does in the uk. Every major phone provider over here agreed to honour it without increasing charges, which is impressive enough to say the least.
According to the red website its only available on cingular and t mobile over the pond though...
And anyway, its a nice phone =) - Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Or... if you happen to be in the market for a laptop why not buy one that helps with charity also... rather than buy one that doesn't?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_Red
has some information on the initiative - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Gimme a red macbook BONO!!!!
I don't care if it's for the poor children!
(actually I do care, and think that it's a great cause, even though I don't think they're giving enough of the sale of these RED products to charity. $250 Moto-phone and only $9 to charity? bleh.) - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I donate $ anonymously to charity anyways. I'd want the red laptop, just for the red laptop. To get it and have some $ thrown to another charity? That's fine with me.
And I don't see any goofy social stigma to having a red laptop. People skin and case up their toys now anyways, there's tons of money made in the aftermarket doing case mods on everything. I'd rather just buy the genuine product is all. - goodcompany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Best thing I've ever read about the U2 iPod:
---
I don't know about you but I was looking forward to seeing what an Apple designed special U2 iPod would look like. The marriage of these two mega brands and creative power houses should have produced something leaving the masses drooling and wanting. An atomic explosion of design and substance.
Instead the U2 iPod looks like the A-Team van

Monotone?
Are you an idiot?
http://images.google.ca/images?q=iMac%20colors - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Buy a normal iPod. Donate extra cash to your own charity.
- ReallyChili, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or you could just go to http://www.colorwarepc.com and get an iPod/MacBook, etc in whatever friggin color you want.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or you could just deal with the color you have and base your purchase more on what's running underneath the keyboard than the color of the damn bezel.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No. If it were, it would be down.
However, you can always catch the Engadget text feed. http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/11/steve-jobs-dishes-tomorrow-at-10-00am-pst-1-00pm-est-be-there/ - jujubear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've always loved the idea of the RED scheme, the only problem I have with it is that not only do a lot of the RED products (IMO) look a little silly, but the red itself tends to make me think of blood. And while I understand the need to make people aware of the thousands who needlessly die every day, I'm really not sure that many are going to be queuing up to buy blood red products in an attempt to reduce said number.
- jsg7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Are we going back to the old Apple multi-color schemes or something?
Just so long as they don't bring back "flower power"... - UnknownBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ohh the Apple Online Store is closed... so were gotta see something other than an online movie store
- jujubear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just to be clear, I wasn't saying that the issue is that it's red period. Moreso that the red itself doesn't work so well for a lot of products as it tends to be hard to make it fit into a product casually, unlike a label, stripe, or something else that approximates a product 'note' could.
Although having said that, I think a (RED) Ferrari would be rather cool (providing it actually came with more than a $20 donation to the global fund). - cybersamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WOW, 3 colors!!!!!! that's freaking AMAZING!!!
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There are things that are red that aren't blood. Like Tomatoes and Apples. I think a vast majority of Ferraris are sold with red paint. I don't think it's because the owners like to think of the blood they will spill when they hit the streets with their new sports car.
- grouchyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@zoom1928
Using your logic:
James Bond supports terrorism because Pierce Brosnan is Irish.
Shakespeare supports terrorism because Kenneth Branagh is Irish.
Jedi are terrorists because Liam Neeson is Irish.
You are a complete idiot. - drjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder who Bono had to blow to get the copywrite for red. Still, good cause as opposed to the origonal U2 ipods which seemed mostly to be about fleecing the fashion conscious/old people.
- sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No one (with a brain) ever said that everything Apple does is innovative... But you are right, those would be some dull announcements. However, I could imagine a blood red iMac looking pretty good.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the $700 markup is a deal for a paint job.
- sv650touring, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zzzzbest
Thank you! Could you please explain this to my boss? He keeps insisting I wear a nice outfit to work DESPITE the fact that it doesn't change what I have underneath. - h3xley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It will be streamed live.
http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/sep_2006/event/index.html - crunkykd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, I like RED. And if Jobs decides to support an AIDS awareness charity - I'm all for it. If he wants to release limited-edition versions of his products, maybe with special colors or features, that's clever. I love seeing people use their positions of authority to make the world a better place. His nemesis, Bill Gates, is giving away billions to charity. I'd like to see Steve & his buddy Ellison do as much, versus just trash talking Bill. By the way, I'm a longtime WinPC user, but I'm considering a dualboot MAC for my next purchase. And if I can help a charity in the process, wonderful!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now Apple hardware comes in white, black and AIDS.
Can I get my iBook in Twin Towers Grey?
Because I need a constant reminder. - ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Gates is giving most of his time/cash to charity now. I don't see Jobs doing that.
- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Holy crap! Stop the presses! Apple's putting out something in a new color!!! Let's celebrate solely because a company that usual is monotone and boring, has decided to add one color to it's pallet! Yay!
- P155, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Well Bono is gay, so that would fit in perfectly with the whole MAC image and marketing...
- zoom1928, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Wow, lot's of kids here too young to remember the IRA.
- babakshirazi, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3***** Bono and his big glasses and those retarded looking iPods. The special edition models always suck and new red ones will suck even more.
If you want to help out w/ AIDS, wear a condom or don't have sex and donate to reputable AIDS charities instead.
