- FrostyFire, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Wow thank you for posting this. I started out with a 1.83GHz machine, I thought the whine was bad until I returned it for a 2.0GHz machine with the W8611 serial number range....the whine was twice as bad and the machine kept mooing a lot. If I wanted to pay $3k for a cow I'd move to Texas.
- ryan_merket, on 10/12/2007, -11/+29Actually, California is the leading dairy producer.
http://www.cdqa.org/facts/ - p3ngu1n, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26Wow, almost nothing is less significant than online petitions. Signing a worthless non-document (or wrose, creating one) just shows how hopelessly inept you are. Stop with the online petitions already.
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19At least Apple has accepted that there is a problem and is willing to fix it. That is also why I'll wait until a revision of a MacBook Pro is released.
- Goya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Maybe he wanted beef cattle...
- matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Because this is Digg.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12there are hibernate issues too, good to see that they are fixing the problems with replacements.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Now I feel really sorry for early adopters, I had to fight my internel geek self to not buy one of those, too bad people are paying $2K+ and getting a hardware-bugged laptop :(
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You paid 3k for your MacBook? You must have gotten every option possible.
Intersting enough, I have the 2.0 as well, 2GB of Ram, the 7200RPM drive and I have none of the issues listed. I guess I got lucky. - CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Perhaps the whine is located between keyboard and chair...
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10On Diggnation 38, he was saying he's trading his PB in for a MBP... strange
- muleking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just curious, has anyone out there recieved one of these that they were happy with and didn't have to return 2 times?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10It's funny. My uncle has a nice BMW and he had to send it into the shop.
The point is, Apples are, for the most part, expertly designed and engineered. They're fantastic products, sturdy, well-made, and well-designed.
Of course if something DOES go wrong (even NASA shuttles fail), I love knowing that Apple is pretty responsible. I just phoned in my problem. They're overnighting me a free postage support box and they'll have a new MBPro out to me by the end of the week or next Monday.
Stuff happens. At least I know I'm taken care of and when I get my revised MBPro, it'll still be the best computer I've ever owned. So keep your smarmy ***** to yourself and use a product because you knock it. - FrostyFire, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Canadian dollars, and welcome to 14% sales tax.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I have a replacement coming tomorrow, anyone want to predict if I'll have the same problems? I had the whine and a ***** speaker.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Perhaps the whine is located between keyboard and chair..."
That's a real fanboy comment to make. If there is a verifiable problem, and hundreds of users are reporting it, don't you think that it should be fixed by Apple?
You sir, are a complete *****. :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12So why is it a big deal that a company is fixing their mistakes? why should apple be praised for this? this should be a given.. not an opportunity for worship
- conshok26, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm on my 3rd MacBook Pro. The first one I returned because the light sensor did not work and the second one becasue there was a problem with the video RAM. So far everything looks good on this one and I hope it stays that way.
- fuckingstudent, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13....an interminable whine seems to be affecting Digg too....
- UprightJoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm happy with mine. It has the issues mentioned in the article but they don't bug me enough to return it.
1) Flicker at lowest LCD setting.
I just use the second lowest if I need to conserve juice. Sure, I'd probably get an extra 60 seconds worth of battery life at the absolute lowest setting but that doesn't bug me.
2) Hot above the F1 keys.
It sure is! It's a good thing I can't think of any reason at all to put my hands there.
3) Too hot to use in lap.
I'm typing on mine right now in my lap while wearing shorts and I have to admit, it's a tad uncomfortable. I will probably relocate or put something over my legs in the next few minutes.
Luckily, I haven't had any problems at all with whining. It's dead quiet when plugged in. When running on batteries, if I stick my ear up really close I can hear something but it's not audible during normal use. - freshcreation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Have you seen this ad for the MacBook Pro?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/martijnvanosch/121194378/ - ryogahibiki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Apple will definitely give Kevin the new revision MacBook that fixes all these problems, otherwise, Kevin will bitch about it to thousands of listeners on Digg and create serious bad press for Apple.
- Arkin710, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Mine definitely has a crappy right speaker, and a slight whine. The whine doesn't bother me as much as the speaker, though the computer would be really quiet without the whine. It gets pretty hot too.
It is my 3rd Macbook Pro. The first had a dead pixel in the center of the screen, the second had a bad VRAM problem. - ckoerner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My MacBook Pro has none of the noted problems. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Yes it gets a bit warm, but what do you expect? I have no disillusion that this "laptop" is meant to sit on my lap. Not unless I want to fry my guys. :-) My 12" Powerbook got just as hot. For the record my serial starts with W8612
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6What if you have the old revision? better not be stuck with those issues! thats unacceptable
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i tried getting mine fixed (same problems) but the geniuses told me there was nothing wrong. i think ill try again and threaten to return...
- drw2583, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Filtering news out of the front page defeats the purpose of digg. The point is to put news on the main page that the audience (as a whole) cares about.
If you are crying about Apple articles, you are clearly in the minority. - ScottBod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I hope they do the same to the iMac users who are having Airport problems too.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They never made a 1.25Ghz Titanium.
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dude, you're getting an MacBook Pro! (custom space heater installed for FREE!)
- UprightJoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh, another issue I don't have is the airport issue. I've had problems similar to what is described with my G4 iBook every once in a while but nothing yet with the MacBook.
- thebaconmonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I just called AppleCare. He told me the "whine" was normal (it's the same CPU whine that every one else has).
He also told me the heat issue would have to be looked at by a genious. He suggested taking it and leaving it at the apple store for a few hours and letting them play with it.
Now, if I go through all of this, will they replace it in store with a newer model, or are they going to make me send it away. It's really the only computer I have atm and I can't really go a few weeks without any sort of work getting done. - AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Care to share specs? time of buying? serial number prefix (I'm told they designate production dates)? no problems at all? whining or whatever people is reporting? I'm dying to buy one just don't want to be stuck with a lemon and don't want to get into fighting with tech. support
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Since when is burning your skin a small issue? There is a huge difference between laptops running hot (which is expected), and burning your skin. That is the sign of one of two things: poor engineering, or faulty components. What do you consider a normal user? I'd be pretty pissed if my CPU whined, burned my skin, and LCD flickered on a $2,000 laptop.
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Claymore: Mine is at apple, but its just sat there for a week "diagnosing" so far! :(
- Claymore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You can see your Serial Number from the "Repair Status" screen.
https://support.apple.com/repairstatus - jinexile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My iBook is just as bad
- linuxinternet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am on my second MBP now. Problems with the 1st:
Keyboard and Trackpad die altogether, at random intervals. Reboot required to fix.
The CPU whine when idle
Airport Drops Connections
Problems with my 2nd MBP:
Airport drops connections
Screen gets corrupted (images and text jumble up and blend together) when scrolling a long page in Safari or iTerm
Sometimes will not wake from sleep or hibernate at all. Reboot required.
Still, i have to say I do still LOVE this thing. I guess I'll be getting a newer rev too then. - leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8This doesn't suprise me all that much, and is pretty much par for the course on all first generation Apple products.
I remember Kevin Rose talking about being offered a new MacBook to replace the PowerBook G4 on TWIT, and he turned Apple down for this exact reason. - vinbot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have a 1.83 MBP, and it has the CPU whine (easily fixed with the mirror widget hack) and yes, it gets hotter than hell on the bottom - much hotter than my 1.67 PowerBook. The fans on my unit never seem to go on, either that or they are ultra silent. The hardware test indicates everything is fine, so I guess everything is within spec and functioning normally.
All in all, I wish I could have waited for the next revision so all the kinks could be worked out, but I needed a laptop, and this is the nicest one out there, IMHO. - bmelnick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In terms of the whine .... not happening on my Mac Mini Core Duo, but is on my MacBook.
- rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No wonder Apple is thinking about getting out of the computer business to focus on it's cash cow, iPod. Dell would have been out of business 15 years ago if they had the issues that I read here.
- Petronski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seriously, Koshak, I can't tell if you are for real or if your posts constitute some kind of bizarre performance art.
But I can't stop laughing at your bottomless, spittle-splashed anger. - underburn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ESPECIALLY as an early adopter, wouldnt it be wise to buy Applecare?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is a defect in my opinion. Apple rep alluded there may be a power management problem and the fans not running correctly. Your MBPro should NOT be getting this hot. Take it to an Apple store -- let them check it out. You can reserve an appointment by finding your nearest www.apple.com/retail store and using Concierge.
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I bought a refurbed Powerbook 1.25Ghz and saved $500. It has been excellent. It was undoubtedly one of those systems with the "white spots" in the LCD. I'm thinking there might be a lot of MBP refurbs soon... I might pick one up. I've had it back to Apple once because the backlit keyboard went flakey. It was a 3 day turnaround.
btw I ALWAYS get the extended warrantee for laptops. - lmlloyd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"The point is, Apples are, for the most part, expertly designed and engineered. They're fantastic products, sturdy, well-made, and well-designed."
Yeah, I can tell from the list of problems that they have only the best failures.
"Stuff happens. At least I know I'm taken care of and when I get my revised MBPro, it'll still be the best computer I've ever owned. So keep your smarmy ***** to yourself and use a product because you knock it."
Yeah, because no other computer company will replace a faulty unit. Everyone who buys anything but an Apple just has to throw it in the trash if it has a problem. Seriously, if a computer you are having to get replaced because it is having problems is the best computer you have ever owned, you might think about using some different vendors. I have bought quite a few computers that have never had to be returned because of problems, so I know there are companies out there capable of doing it.
As far as my "smarmy *****" goes, I might not be quite as tempted if I didn't have to wade through reams of talk about how amazingly perfect Mac hardware is on every single article, whether it has anything to do with Apple or not. If you want to run all over the net proselytizing the innate superiority of your chosen brand, you might want to make sure their current flagship product isn't riddled with problems before doing it. It doesn't work to well to look down your nose at everyone, when you are having problems just getting your perfect computer to log onto a network, or not burst into flames. That isn't particularly expert design.
Seriously, take it from someone who has been using Intel notebooks for a lot longer than a few weeks, whining fans and flickering LCDs are a sign of cheap components, and wireless network connection issues, and burning hot temperatures are a sign of bad design and engineering. So how again is this Intel notebook so much better designed than one of those awful Dells, crappy Sonys, or atrocious Alienwares? - Shaft0rz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The article makes it sound like there already are revisions - a couple of them. I'd assume ordering online would be more likely to net you a newer revision than buying from a store though.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3CPU Whine
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why are you so happy about a product that you're going to return 3 times in 3 months or less. I'm happy when I get a product that works right the first time. Support is also important, but it's worthless if the product is repeatedly breaking. The whole point of buying a computer is to USE it, not ship it to tech support over and over.
