- DavidChouinard, on 02/10/2009, -7/+144Like the word "ask", makes it seems as though Apple was polite.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -12/+91Apple is so lame.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -5/+76Multi Touch been around for ages. Unknown Japanese brands were already flaunting multi touch on phones ages ago. I duno woz apple's beef. Everyone gangs on Microsoft for being anti competitive, but I think the real anti competitive player is Apple.
- anthropodeus, on 02/10/2009, -1/+66google probably realized that the litigation wasn't worth the trouble. and besides, since android is open source, somebody is bound to write the code for multitouch anyway, and google won't be responsible.
- slifty, on 02/10/2009, -2/+58I guess it's a touchy subject for them :/
- Tyrghast, on 02/10/2009, -2/+46Asking with an army of lawyers isn't really asking... It's more like warning.
- AndySavage, on 02/10/2009, -7/+45Yeah, Apple, just keep a monopoly on the IO technology that we all DESERVE to be using in our everyday lives.
Good to know that anytime I want to use anything besides a mouse and keyboard I'll have to ask your ***** permission.
***** you, Apple. - Paulorific, on 02/10/2009, -2/+40I don't get how technology can be patented like that. Is there a patent on radio transmitters/receivers? Touch screen technology can be used by anyone, but for some reason two fingers can only be used by Apple? I truthfully do not understand at all.
- Scott2, on 02/10/2009, -5/+39I didn't see Google as being that respectful (or afraid) of Apple.
Even Palm (on the brink of destruction) has more guts. - slifty, on 02/10/2009, -2/+31That reminds me,
There was that pun competition on Digg a few weeks ago. At first I sent in 9 entries, but came up with a REAL zinger so I sent that in too. I was sure that at least one would win, but it turned out that no pun in ten did :( - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -8/+31Is it just me or is Steve Jobs a douchebag? I'm new here, but I see so many articles about how amazing and godlike he is. Why does his whole company sound so douchey?
- Otto, on 02/10/2009, -0/+22You fail at understanding "open source".
- drlha, on 02/10/2009, -2/+21Who says they were not? Apple and Google are buddies, after all the Google CEO Eric Schmidt is on the Apple board of directors.
- harrypl0tter, on 02/10/2009, -4/+22Patents..
- jumalauta, on 02/10/2009, -1/+18Software patents are B-A-D!
- DeathRay2K, on 02/10/2009, -1/+17They probably were. Apple and Google have a fairly good relationship. If Google had refused, Apple may have had to sue them, effectively destroying that relationship. It just makes more business sense to sit back while it gets sorted out in the Apple - Palm battle.
- skyshock1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+15Google's CEO sits on Apple's board of directors. They have a semi-close relationship I'd say.
- timusca, on 02/10/2009, -3/+17I don't like this at all... as much as I love the iPhone and find it difficult for anyone to match it, Google would have done nothing but provide healthy competition. Consumers lose in the end when the big guy won't let anyone else play along. I know they agreed to this on good terms, but I don't think Apple should have said anything in the first place. Competition forces more innovation!
- EdgarVerona, on 02/10/2009, -3/+16Same as any cease-and-desist order, just a bit more friendly. Apple said "I have the patents," Google said "Okay, I won't mess with that." I don't see where a scandal fits in, other than that Google wasn't willing to go to bat to try and prove that the multitouch patent isn't defensible.
- atm259, on 02/10/2009, -2/+15That's why I did not buy an iphone even though it was probably better than the G1. I bought the G1 because I want to see open source succeed and apple-douche-baggery stop.
- aklu, on 02/10/2009, -0/+12As the article stated, "recent hacks to the G1 have shown that the device is more than capable of handling multi-touch functionality". That being said, I think Google will build a framework that allows multi-touch, but will stop short of delivering. It's up to the user community to deliver on this one, as it will prevent any potential litigation against Google.
- skyshock1, on 02/10/2009, -1/+13Interesting Apple's worried about people stealing "their" idea for multi-touch UI devices when there was that movie Minority Report that came out long before Apple's patents making this method of UI pretty famous. Hm....
- digitalpencil, on 02/10/2009, -0/+12someone already has http://www.ryebrye.com/blog/2008/11/22/g1-multitou ...
looks quite impressive for such an early dev stage. - xcomputerman, on 02/10/2009, -1/+12People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
Palm has an arsenal of patents they can unleash on Apple if they choose to start playing dirty. Palm has been in this business much longer than any of these guys ... don't think they're the weak players in this game just because Apple has been successful with its iPhone. Palm practically invented the smartphone to begin with, and pioneered the use of touchscreens on mobile devices. - mwalker05, on 02/10/2009, -0/+11...do not apply? are you saying apple patented touching a screen with more than one finger? they can patent their specific gesture system and the specific technology they use to do it, but they cant stop some one from doing it in a different way, such as palm
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 02/10/2009, -4/+15because they are mac users duh..
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 02/10/2009, -2/+13For Apple's sake, If Google elects to only use one finger, hopefully it'll be the middle one.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 02/10/2009, -2/+12“[Luke:] I can’t believe it. [Yoda:] That is why you fail.”
- Devrdander, on 02/10/2009, -1/+11There are already home brew firmwares for android that give it Multi Touch. Its open source after all...
- brainflakes, on 02/10/2009, -2/+12Apple didn't even invent multi-touch, I remember this demo at least a year before the iphone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp-y3ZNaCqs - CrudOMatic, on 02/10/2009, -2/+11Reminds me of when Apple sued Microsoft back in the 80's because the windows in Windows 2.0 could overlap other windows... and they LOST. ***** Apple and their "IT'S MINE!!! STAY AWAY!!" attitude towards technology. Tried to patent overlapping - as if they even invented the GUI... I think Xerox has something to say about that.
...and people want to say that MS are a bunch of *****... - chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -0/+9@slifty Wow. . . just wow.
- Whackly, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8there's more than one way to make multitouch work. apple ownes the patent to one particular method of multitouch. they don't own "multitouch."
- sdellboy, on 02/10/2009, -3/+11It's like Karl Benz showing off his new automobile and then asking anyone else thinking about making one to not use wheels...
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8longest pun ever..
- clickmyface, on 02/10/2009, -5/+13Ask this - what has the cell phone industry been doing for the last 10 years. Not a damn thing. Until a week ago, I had a 6 year old Samsung flip phone complete with extendable antenna in my pocket. There has been no significant progress until now.
From what I understand about Apple, there is probably two reasons they are doing this - one is money, and one is the reason mentioned above. The industry has been working together to milk every penny out of us while producing the same piece of ***** over and over. I like knowing that that pisses Apple off even more than it does me. - HeyArnold, on 02/10/2009, -2/+10LOL just installed this today:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=4 ... - Diggnabbit, on 02/10/2009, -1/+9No, there is no patent on radio transmitters/receivers. But there used to be. It expired (as all patents do after 17 years).
Some touch screen technology is out of patent and can be used by anyone. Multi-touch touchscreen technology is patented by Apple and can only be used with their permission (or if the patentexpires or is proven invalid). - specialK16, on 02/10/2009, -2/+9And Apple fanboys still have the idea that Apple somehow drives innovation.
- Bryantho, on 02/10/2009, -2/+9They dictate what hardware you can run their software on, they restrict what carrier you can use with their phone, they restrict what software you develop, run, and make available on their phone, and now they try to prevent other companies (with more open platforms) from innovating on UI that uses more than one finger?
All companies actively protect their IP and patents, but at least Microsoft and Google will let you run their stuff on anything and you can develop and distribute whatever software you want.
- Jeddycakes, on 02/10/2009, -4/+11BASTARDS!!!
- clickmyface, on 02/10/2009, -2/+8But isn't that flawed logic?
How is duplicating Apple's implementation innovative? Apple's development and design teams kick everyone's ass. What the hell has the cell phone industry been doing for the last 10 years? Not a god damn thing.
And I must say, its pretty damn questionable when the only thing to save Palm is Jon Rubenstien - a guy who use to do the exact same thing for Apple and was in on the iPhone development. - RetepNamenots, on 02/10/2009, -2/+8Well I didn't see it on the front page yesterday, so I'm digging it now.
- Dested, on 02/10/2009, -2/+8I think you intended that pun...
- HyperJack, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6@slifty
Kudos for trying so hard man! - bigteebo, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5I still want a clickwheel game controller(makes a a great steering wheel or paddle) , without Apple involved whatsoever.
- Rudegar, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6they might as well start out polite and
then sue if google rejected more so now they took the patent - Diggnabbit, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5It's not that black&white (see what I did there?).
There's nothing to compete for if there's no protection for intellectual property except market share, and it's always cheaper to be a "me too" corporation that just copies what someone else did the research to develop, so without IP protection, it's not economically competitive to engage in research, and that means less innovation.
That's why patents expire. - mwalker05, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6it cant be patents. apple can only patent their touchscreen technology and their own gestures, not the entire concept of touching a screen with 2 fingers. if that were the case then microsoft surface is about to get a lot less useful, as is windows 7 on a tablet pc. google just doesnt want to piss off apple.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -2/+7I asked Apple to ***** off, doesn't mean they're going to do it..
