Ok, who told Apple about gaming? - stevealford, on 02/10/2008, -2/+57It's that goddamned new 2x as fast Safari browser... they're tapping into the internet and learning about our culture at an alarming speed.
- imcquill, on 02/10/2008, -8/+57Since the apple TV is literally running OS X exactly, there is no reason why all OS X games (I know, I know... all two of them) could not automatically run on the apple TV. Just bring a controller and you'd be done. It would definitely be cool to buy a game that worked on both mac and apple tv, and it would probably bring more game developers over to the mac.
- deadbaby, on 02/10/2008, -0/+40" there is no reason why all OS X games (I know, I know... all two of them) could not automatically run on the apple TV."
They would have to seriously upgrade the hardware. The current revision of the AppleTV is a 1ghz Pentium M. - monospaced, on 02/11/2008, -8/+30That's exactly what they said when Apple announced they were entering the phone industry.
- Kimberlyyan, on 02/11/2008, -2/+24Imagine the price if apple built a console.
- inertic, on 02/10/2008, -0/+21Considering apple wants to be the media center in every living room, i'm not surprised. the ps3 and xbox are acting as media centers for many people.
- Frazzlet, on 02/11/2008, -5/+26I don't think it'd work for them. They would make a console with minimal games and a high price. But, it will look nice and be thin.
- Uranium118, on 02/10/2008, -13/+34Apple is so going to fail if they plan to enter the gaming market. It cost Microsoft 2 billions to enter the industry. I don't think Apple could afford it in long term. Also, compatibly and affordability are not Apple's strong points and that's what you need.
- MrPresident13, on 02/10/2008, -19/+39iPwn?
- inactive, on 02/10/2008, -7/+20There are some good games for the Mac. I have about 12 installed right now. The problem is that many of the high end games are bad PC ports made using Carbon or Cider. Casual games do a little better on the Mac. If you're the type of person who enjoys Super Tux or Monopoly or The Sims, the Mac can be the platform for you.
- Jeffler, on 02/11/2008, -0/+13WTF is an iTouch? Stop using that name!
- TGMD, on 02/11/2008, -3/+14There will only be one game. It will rely completely on just one mouse click.
But it will look really really really good. - ThankTheCheese, on 02/11/2008, -0/+11I'm still waiting for the AppleTV to morph into the AppleTV, let alone a gaming box -- where's my Take 2 update!!!!
- BrandonMills, on 02/11/2008, -1/+11Photoshop is fun, right?
- YuriSakazaki, on 02/10/2008, -3/+13lol no
- Jeffler, on 02/11/2008, -1/+11Guys guys! Its so obvious!
APPLE IS RELEASING THE PHANTOM!
/sarcasm - inactive, on 02/11/2008, -1/+10I would think they would need to get decent mac games first, before they ever enter that market.
- mustang460, on 02/11/2008, -0/+9just like they did already, pippin 1.0 was $600 in 1996, only it wasn't small and thin, it was monstrous ad ugly
- Shadow503, on 02/11/2008, -1/+9"There are some good games for the Mac. . .If you're the type of person who enjoys Super Tux or Monopoly or The Sims, the Mac can be the platform for you."
So the Mac is good for gamers as long as they don't plan on playing anything more advanced than a flash game. - blackjack75, on 02/11/2008, -1/+9They are certainly glorious 3D javascript games.. I heard they have an iPhone "SDK" for that..
- Azentium, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8Apple's current system of selling hardware at a premium, along with their tendency to roll out new hardware every year, doesn't bode well with how the industry as a whole works. Selling a game system, whether it be a handheld or a console, for a premium ($500+ for system, $200+ for handheld) will ultimately lead to failure, as seen with the PS3, 3DO, Sega Nomad, and Atari Lynx. Also, yearly hardware revisions would **** over developers and consumers as developers would always have to develop for the lowest common denominator (weakest device). If they can somehow break away from their normal routine I'm sure they have a fair chance of succeeding in the market, otherwise, they are doomed to failure.
- monospaced, on 02/11/2008, -2/+9There is no such thing as an iTouch. Please refer to it as an iPod touch, which is the correct name.
- bunkka, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8I am sure they would incorporate a year old video card in their gaming systems.
- chrisldenton, on 02/11/2008, -6/+13You're so right Apple has no hardware connections, especially not with processor manufacturers. Oh yeah... except for the PowerPC architecture that they helped develop with IBM and Motorola (although they no longer use it), or their very close relationship with Intel (hence the custom Core2Duo developed at Apple's request for the MacBookAir). So what was your point about Apple not having special hardware relationships????
- archer75, on 02/11/2008, -2/+9It's all about the video card.
- Po0py, on 02/10/2008, -2/+9If they are gonna do this then they need to throw everything at it. They need to encourage third parties to develop in a big way. That is the only way that gaming on any apple machine will take off.
- KibibyteBrain, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8Most significant would be the lack of video card specs and overall RAM. You can actually run pretty decent games on a really slow CPU with decent video specs if they were custom coded. Look at the PS2. Sure those aren't next gen, but they "work".
However, the AppleTV could easily be upgraded with a faster CPU and a high end mobile graphics processor and RAM to make it a serious contender. While there are not many Mac games, anyone who knows about the Macintosh multimedia APIs and OpenGL extensions knows they'd make game development really easy compared to pretty much anything other than Microsoft's API right out of the get go, and MS's advantage namely comes from experience.
I think Apple have finally looked ahead to the future in a few years where these entertainment hubs will be central to the media center, and that no one will want one that can't play video games too, as Sony and Microsoft already have beta versions that can do that. - oojamaflip2006, on 02/11/2008, -4/+11A lot of the time it is wide-eyed zealots such as yourself that scare people away from the Macintosh. People don't want to feel as if they are part of some sort of elitist cult when they're buying a computer. I love Apple products. Its Apple people that I dislike.
- logandurand, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6In his defense, there is evidence to suggest that Intel wasn't making that processor *only* because of Apple.
- clintology, on 02/10/2008, -9/+15Good research on this article, like all Ars stuff. I don't know that I would specifically purchase an Apple gaming console... I really don't think they can compete in the current market (but who knows?). I think they're just covering their butt for the future and possibly for games on the AppleTV / iPhone et cetera.
- hassanchop13, on 02/10/2008, -1/+7you need some actual buttons for most games- even the DS has 6 buttons+ arrows almost all games use. sure, you could develop some games that are completely controlled by touch, but you'd be seriously limiting the potential.
- MacParrot, on 02/11/2008, -2/+8You've only said it at least three times. Maybe you should say it a few more times so everyone knows what you're all about...you know...unimaginative and all that.
- digitalarcanum, on 02/11/2008, -2/+8I hate Apple elitists. I really, really do. That's why I troll comments like this. I enjoy your tears. They taste sweet, and remind you that your hardware is the same as mine (intel) and your OS has security patches, just like mine.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6Yeah its not a special processor for Apple, its actually a new spec for ultra portable laptops in general. MacBook Air isnt even the first one to use it. Someone has been hideously mislead, NoKA chocolates anyone?
- digitalarcanum, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6No, you don't have a UI like mine, this is true. a gimmicky UI with a taskbar you can't move and some annoying ass jumping icons? no thanks. Also, Apple's OS is built on BSD, which is open source, of which they took a lion's share of code, and gave back the mouse's share.
MS doesn't steal their operating systems. the windows 2000 source code properly accredited UNIX for TCP/IP protocol stack code. windows from NT on up has been built from the ground up. and as far as it being a mountain of cruft? that cruft is a mound of backwards compatibility, which Apple seems to think is pointless. Apple elitist tears sure are sweet tasting. - bbardlbradd, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6Apple sucked in 1996.
- calgone, on 02/11/2008, -6/+11Apple has 15 billion in cash reserves. Not saying they're getting in to gaming consoles, but they could definitely do it if they were fully committed to it.
- Aggaman, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6This isn't for the Mac. This is about the iPod Touch/iPhone. If you've seen one of the jailbroken ones, you'd know that the platform has a lot of potential as a portable gaming device.
- UKsHaDoW, on 02/11/2008, -3/+8You mean like the ipod?
- positron, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5iDon't want anybody else
And when iThink about you
iTouch myself - ShrimpCrackers, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4A Mac is by definition a Personal Computer.... unless you're a marketing shill or fanboy that repeats whatever you see on ads. In fact Apple themselves made the term popular, and even promoted it, at a time when mostly businesses owned computers back in the 80's.
- bluefluke, on 02/11/2008, -3/+7The IPHONE was a ***** disaster , they failed, and they failed hard.
Just because you and your nerd freinds have an Iphone doesn't mean anyone else does.
Good luck sucking apples ***** though. - zapperdude60, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_KxN0Nepus
- TimesHero, on 02/11/2008, -3/+7The last thing the world needs is Apple anything...
- repick3, on 02/11/2008, -2/+6Video games need buttons, Steve Jobs hates buttons... One button gaming died with the Atari.
- OSJunky, on 02/10/2008, -4/+8they are hiring game developers too
http://9to5mac.com/apple-hiring-game-developers-45 ... - Azentium, on 02/11/2008, -1/+5As shown with the Atari Lynx, Sega Nomad, and Nintendo Virtual Boy, right?
- bluefluke, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Really, it will be the 3DO2 perhaps? It will be an a musing slaughter. This is one area where microsoft will gleefully stomp the ever loving ***** out of apple.
- bluefluke, on 02/11/2008, -4/+7Yes, except that M$ and sony have a HISTORY of making games, where as appple mostly just sucks at it.
