iPhone Hater talking point #1: poor battery life - DENIED
iPhone Hater talking point #2: easily-scratched screen - DENIED
iPhone Hater talking point #3: non-removable SIM - DENIED
Now if the touchscreen typing turns out to be better than expected, I expect Apple-hater heads to explode in epic numbers. Listen for the booms the first week of July... - j1a1g1, on 10/11/2007, -20/+177“We’ve also upgraded iPhone’s entire top surface from plastic to optical-quality glass for superior scratch resistance and clarity."
Oooh Optical quality! - TheCount, on 10/11/2007, -96/+245"iPhone Hater talking point #1: poor battery life - DENIED

First, those aren't even the complaints people had, and two, that has nothing to do with hating Apple and everything to do with people liking functional phones. You seem to think any of those points are ridiculous, meanwhile, people judge phones by such criteria all the time, not just the iPhone.
The REAL gripes:
1. No 3G - STILL VALID, with no remedy till at least version 2.
2. No 3rd Party Apps/Office Apps - STILL VALID, any hope for a cure was slaughtered at WWDC.
3. Pricy - STILL VALID, but may be remedied since no concrete info on price after contract has been released.
On top of this, now that they've moved to a glass screen (and I've had plenty of phones with plastic screens that weren't all scratched up, not to mention you can by screen protectors), the first time you drop that thing (like most people drop their phones at some point), you better pray it doesn't crack.
It's also ridiculous that anyone believe this thing will have 8 hours just because Apple says so, since when has anyone taken press releases from companies regarding battery time as gospel? - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -38/+153If Apple say that's the battery life then it must be true.
- Wagnel, on 10/11/2007, -17/+122I'm trying to resist the temptation to buy one...this isn't helping
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -12/+109boom!
- The_Ox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+72Now, all we need are rate plan details from AT&T...
Anytime, AT&T, would be great. Anytime. - rodrigo74, on 10/11/2007, -7/+69Easty, during the iPhone introduction keynote His Jobness said it would be possible to access the SIM card from a slot on top of the device...
- legislate, on 10/11/2007, -30/+89oh please, you know there will be problems as with any 1st release. Early adopters are kewl and all, but the smart people will wait until you guys are finished beta testing for us.
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -11/+61"If Apple say that's the battery life then it must be true."
Traditionally, with the iPod, it actually has been true. Apple has been known for underclaming battery life on the iPods.
Yeah, I was surprised too. - unloud, on 10/11/2007, -1/+47Lets hope Arstechnica throws one around until it breaks like they did the ipod nano :-D
- TheRealDeal, on 10/11/2007, -9/+54Buried as idiot.
- hotsoda, on 10/11/2007, -19/+60"If Apple say that's the battery life then it must be true."
Actually, Apple has under estimated their battery life numbers for iPods in the past. While it might get around 5 or 6 realistically, it really can't be a huge overstatement. - xoineg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+44a cheap all you can eat data plan should be offered. The iphone will eat sooooooooo much data that if you pay per mb you can easily pay 3 times your regular bill.
- KMartSheriff, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39Welcome to the club. Some of us hated Apple too, yet couldn't deny their awesome products. Now we're giddy like teen girls going to prom when Apple speaks.
Anyway, the point of this story is I guess I'll see you in line. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+44I hate Apple and I hate mindless Apple drones, but I want that phone. I can't think of any rational reason to justify it, but I want that phone and I will have it...dammit.
- winnch, on 10/11/2007, -7/+40"And I hope to hell the glass shatters easily. There's a reason, Apple, why phones have plastic."
This is one of the dumber comments I've read today. I love it. - snipes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33Probably because people think the iPhone will revolutionize pricing on the plans too.
- iPontus, on 10/11/2007, -22/+55Great!
- dcharti, on 10/11/2007, -2/+34FWIW, all the reports on the latest generation of iPods are typically surprised that they outperform their battery specs.
Of course, notebook battery lives are a different story entirely, since the factors that affect their lives are much more significant. - DonCarcharo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34I'm very curious as to how well the iPhone would handle a fall. With that much screen, now glass no less, I'd be terrified to drop it. Not that any other smartphone I've owned could be considered durable. But still the iPhone strikes me as even more fragile for some reason.
- betobeto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33"And I hope to hell the glass shatters easily. There's a reason, Apple, why phones have plastic."
Uh.... ever heard of tempered glass? Like, on your car's windshield and stuff? - ripple123, on 10/11/2007, -10/+40The IPhone looks like the kinda phone ninjas would use. You know I'm right.
- l33tsauce, on 10/11/2007, -14/+44This conversation is getting really really old. The iphone is really a great looking phone, stop talking ***** about it. If you've never spend more than $300 on a phone before and/or have no uses for a smart phone, you should stop posting right now because the iphone isn't for you. I mean honestly, i wonder how many people here bitching about the iphone EDGE connection actually have a data plan on their current phone? There is no such thing as an end all be all cellphone and the iphone form and function aren't for everybody, stop thinking that the iphone is suppose to be catering to just you. For smart phone users with blackberry or treo though why wouldn't you trade it in for an iphone? my Blackberry interface is as user friendly as DoS, the menu looks like a bunch of freaking command lines, i can't wait to toss it for an iphone.
- mastershane, on 10/11/2007, -1/+31The idea being that you will be forced into a rip-off price plan if you want to own an iphone. Haven't you been paying attention?
- Boondoggle, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32 by dcharti 36 minutes ago
"Well this technically has nothing to do with whether the SIM card is removable or accessible in any way to the user. AFAIK, the iPhone is still a 'sealed' device with a non-removable battery."
"If I had to bet though, I would wager Apple learned their lesson with the iPod and will have a battery replacement program available for at least a decent price"
--------------------------------------------------------------
Don't bet against the house. Apple has sold MILLIONS of iPods with non-replaceable batteries to happy customers across the globe. The continuation of that policy is de-facto proof that it is a working model for both Apple and their customers. - jtjdt, on 10/11/2007, -7/+33iPhone Battery Chart: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/18iphone.html#batterychart
iPhone Competitive Data chart: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/18iphone.html#competitivechart
Actual Press Release: http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/18iphone.html - chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -4/+29iPods reguarly outperform their specs for battery life. If Apple is to be judged by battery life on their consumer electronics, the iPhone should at least be able to do 8 hours of talk time...and if we are lucky, more.
Of course, it all depends on how you use the phone...playing a movie is going to put a crimp in that 8 hour life. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -28/+53"First, those aren't even the complaints people had"
Uh, sure they were. They may not be the only ones (Cingular only and removable battery were others) but battery life and scratchable screen were (and still are) major concerns for many people. Nice try though :p - mandrsn1, on 10/11/2007, -5/+30They haven't announced Euro pricing since no carriers are bowing to Apple's demands. Europe is strict that the phone follows the GSM protocol very strictly. The IPhone has features which require proprietary hardware -- visual voicemail, etc. -- that Euro carriers don't want on their network backend.
- chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -5/+29Name a smartphone that can last longer than 3 hours doing all of that stuff.
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -18/+41TAKE THAT MR. DVORAK!!! HA!
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21People complaining about the eight hour time being all marketing, are ignoring that the comparison chart includes times from other devices ALSO from marketing materials from those devices...
If you are saying Apple is inflating battery life, why would you not say the other numbers would be equally inflated? - Sandwiches_Time, on 10/11/2007, -9/+28Pretty sure they haven't announced European prices yet, chief. It costs $499.
- TomFrost, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Are you kidding? Verizon will never carry the iPhone -- not unless they change their business model. Verizon takes excellent phones and completely strips them of all their good features, making you pay to get them back. That's why Verizon phones run on BREW technology instead of Java. Anyone can write a Java app and put it on the phone. With BREW, you have to buy an expensive SDK and have you app licensed and approved by Verizon's distribution agency before you're actually allowed to run it.
The iPhone has more features than any phone Verizon's crippled so far, AND it requires that the carrier update their cellular protocol. No way will they pick it up. - chrisgeleven, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24ipods do.
- c5kirk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17btw... the N95 wifi error has already been corrected.
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -13/+28Then you don't hate Apple.
- unibomber999, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I have a Blackberry that was practically a cast member for the Jackass movies, and has survived well. Most touch screen devices that I've seen seem to break easily though.
- TheRealDeal, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Buried. Idiot.
- unloud, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16I think they don't even know what they want to do yet.
- BobABoui, on 10/11/2007, -6/+20>The Count posted:
>"It's also ridiculous that anyone believe this thing will have 8 hours just because Apple says so, since when has anyone taken press releases from companies regarding battery time as gospel?"
So you believe Nokia, Samsung, RIM and Palm but not Apple? LOL - daborg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16@NeoCortex: "But what happens to that time when I start using the other features of the iPhone, such as WiFi, music, and movies."
FTA:
iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.
In addition, iPhone will feature up to 250 hours—more than 10 days—of standby time. - TheRealDeal, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20There goes John C. Dvorak's idiotic estimate of 40 minutes of battery life for the iPhone. Where's the retraction Monsieur Dvorak?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Answer in one word NEVER. They had their chance and they passed on it.
- clclark33, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15@jawadde
Sure, US$499-599 is expensive, but the only other smart phone I've seen that I like is the Nokia N95 and it's US$750... They have priced it slightly high, but still competitively in the high end smart phone market, in my opinion. - KMartSheriff, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Verizon sucks anyway.
- TheRealDeal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13It's all about under promising and over delivering. Smart PR. Simple as that.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Funny, I could say the same thing about my 8525 being like a small Windows computer.
Welcome to the wonderful world of PDA devices, about time you noticed them. - jake8689, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12hell 6 hours that's more than what my razor gets i only get like 3-3:30 hours at best so 6 is like a dream come true plus all the free Internet apps that are going to be made, no matter what apple says.
once my sprint contract expires around September i going to get one -
