- easy4lif, on 12/27/2007, -3/+47$2.99 and I don't have to wait for the mail to come with my rental, and I don't have to waste any gas to rent DVD's at the local blockbuster.
let's hope ISP's don't throttle the traffic however. - kard32, on 12/27/2007, -1/+37Here's a better article from Financial Times:
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/91d21b3c-b3ee-11dc-a6df- ...
And people seem to be missing the most important part:
"Apart from letting people rent online, Apple will also for the first time extend its FairPlay digital rights management system beyond its own products.
A digital file protected by FairPlay will be included in new Fox DVD releases, enabling film content to be transferred or “ripped” from the disc to a computer and video iPod. DVD content can already be moved to an iPod but this requires special software and is considered piracy by some studios.
The launch of iPod-ready films on DVD would “help Apple sell a load more video iPods”, said one studio executive. Apple and News Corp declined to comment."
Game-changing if true. - timusca, on 12/27/2007, -2/+22This may make my decision as to buy an AppleTV or not... if this is true, I will buy one in a heartbeat. If not, I still might, but I won't be nearly as excited about it.
- Aggaman, on 12/27/2007, -0/+15This is the big news. I like ripping my own DVDs to watch on my Touch, and I don't give a damn if it is supposed to be illegal. But it would be so much easier if I didn't have to wait ages for handbrake to encode them.
- wonderchemist, on 12/27/2007, -4/+17"Fox and potentially other studios are coming around to the idea that there is nobody out there to challenge iTunes."
There could be, but the studios/labels (most of them anyway) are not willing to give up DRM to defeat iTunes. - turbodiesel, on 12/27/2007, -3/+15You can already rent movies and TV in HD from Xbox live.
An Xbox 360 costs about the same as an Apple TV, and does a lot more, plus its HD. - EvilAnimator, on 12/27/2007, -0/+11About damn time!
- timusca, on 12/27/2007, -1/+11Not for rentals...
- thrasher9898, on 12/27/2007, -0/+10This will be a great addition to the store, all that they need now is to add this to the itunes mobile store, then this can finally come full circle.
- Flowpoke, on 12/27/2007, -2/+11Eh, I don't know how to feel about this - Seems services like NetFlix are cheaper than this - and it's not supporting DRM. I have learned (over and over) that I must avoid DRM - I bought $90 of LOST via iTunes and it can ONLY be played on my apple x 4(?) more? thats *****. I wont by anything from iTunes unless it's free from these dumb restrictions.
- Fourbin, on 12/27/2007, -0/+6With Blockbuster struggling Netflix really needs a rival. If Apple can deliver lots of new releases directly to my televsion in HD through the AppleTV I see this as a huge success. One because they are making money off the rentals and two because people will start to actually buy the AppleTV.
Netflix sucks because you have to wait weeks at a time to get a new release. This way you'll never have to wait.
P.S. For god's sake its 'jailbroken' iPhone not 'jailbreaked'. That drives me insane. - mingistech, on 12/27/2007, -0/+6Apple really needs to add the ability to download movies directly to the AppleTV without having to transfer them from a computer.
That box is in desperate need of a firmware update.... oh yea... and add xvid @ divx support like the 360 and PS3 just got. Without that... why would anyone really wanna buy it.... seriously.
... and this is all coming from a huge apple fanboy. - kelly, on 12/27/2007, -1/+6And why wouldn't you want to go through iTunes?
- MacParrot, on 12/27/2007, -1/+6How many different ways do you need to watch a video? You can have it on up to 5 computers and this is a problem? You can output it to any TV using either an Apple TV or a dedicated Mac box connected to your media center, What is the problem? Sure, DRM sucks, but put the blame where it belongs...on the content copyright holders. I'm sure Apple and Microsoft would love to sell it without DRM, but it isn't up to them.
- freakin42, on 12/27/2007, -1/+6People wondered how iTunes would compete with Limewire/Napster/Kazaa too. 1 Billion plus song purchases later, and 100 million iPods, and people have realized that if you give the user a simple, painless, and inexpensive method to buy, the vast majority will choose to get the media legally.
- kelly, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5All I can say is, "we told you so"
- piratearggghhh, on 12/27/2007, -8/+13What I really want is a netflix style video-on-demand for $15-$20 month with all the movies I can download watch on my TV in high definition that doesn't go through iTunes.
- Jebral, on 12/27/2007, -1/+5And by the time they do(if they ever do), it'll be too late and it'll just be removed from iTunes and all of the studios will already be there.
- chkdg8, on 12/27/2007, -2/+6The ***** is starting to hit the fan. Say bye-bye to the dvd format.
- robfrye, on 12/27/2007, -0/+4Besides not liking Apple, why would you want to defeat iTunes? It's a good, easy to use system that is fairly inexpensive. Jobs has publicly come out against DRM on multiple occasions. All I'm saying is, keep in mind who the real enemy is here - the studios.
- digitalpencil, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3They won't, proprietary services like these, offered from a reputable supplier, will get through the pipes.. ISPs throttle P2P traffic & bittorrent because there's no financial advantage for them to not do & there's no big corporations with legal backing to complain when they do. Imagine if ISPs started throttling a pay-per-use service such as this! Apple would go mad! The entire system relies on flowing traffic, ISPs would be wrapped up in litigation for years, it is simply not in their interest.
- Ghostgum, on 12/27/2007, -3/+6Is this good news? Maybe. I'll know for sure when I have answers for these 2 questions:
1: How much will customers have to pay to rent/download a movie?
2: Will movie rental/downloads be available to any country's iTunes store, or does this deal only apply to the US market? - daizaru, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3Sounds great... too bad it will probably be US only.
- bgramer1, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3They already have that with iMac - just use Front Row which pulls content out of iTunes.
- yabos, on 12/27/2007, -2/+5That'd be nice but I doubt it'll be that cheap. This is the movie studios we're talking about. They'll probably be at least $5.99 to be comparable to PPV.
- digitalpencil, on 12/27/2007, -1/+4No offence, but what did you expect? Zune's have hardly had good rep so far.
- gklitt, on 12/27/2007, -3/+6Yay, now iTunes won't be restricted to Disney and a bunch of old movies.
- Chirp08, on 12/27/2007, -0/+3should be interesting, especially a week after release when a program is released that doesn't require us to "return" our rental..
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2To most people, yes, because it doesn't involve breaking any laws. I personally am all for BitTorrent, but I do like the massing of all the studios into one place (iTunes), because, as Jebral suggests, DRM would be removed from everything at once.
- kelly, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Well...
It has recently become clear that APPLE would love to sell it without DRM... but Microsoft? That's another story. - runeasgar, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Agreed. AppleTV is way too limited. Give it Perian (or some other set of codecs), desktop extension in the form of a second monitor and the ability to download files from iTunes directly -- then I'll buy one. While you're at it, make iTunes a less ***** video manager.
Been using Mac OS X for years now.. love Apple.. hate media producing companies. - Shorties, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Yeah that would be good, they could just make it, "keep 3 on your computer at any given moment" or something.
- windmillninja, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2Not only will I rush to get an AppleTV, but my relationship with Netflix will be that much thinner. If more studios jump on this, bye bye NF. I'm already getting screwed as a Mac user due to the "Watch Now" feature. Essentially, a Windows user is getting more for their money, and NF doesn't seem to be showing any interest in making this feature available for the Mac platform.
- postalblowfish7, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2ahhhh, sweet laziness.
- apb1991, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2When has apple ever commented on a product before Mr. Jobs announces it.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2God I hope not. I won't rent anything from iTunes over $3.00.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+2This would make my decision to buy one too, but I'm a bit more picky. I want to see a selection comparable to Netflix's before I switch.
- Wander2000, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Perian on the Apple TV? Xvid & Divx support on the Apple TV? RSS, weather, and torrents - on the Apple TV? It's all been done, and I've been enjoying streaming my ISOs and everything else from usenet on my Apple TV.
Just do a little searching before you claim that it's lacking those. Sure it requires a hack, but if you can install a hard drive on a PC, you can probably do the hack.
Those that already have a hacked Apple TV: when you see the prompt saying there is a new upgrade for the Apple TV and would you like to update it - JUST SAY NO! Don't come crying like those with the hacked iPhones when 1.1.1 first came out. - Appleologist, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1too bad theres not much to choose from on live...plus the videos can't be mobleized
- drcreek, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1not just DVD. Say goodbye to the physical medium. Good riddance.
- chrismcelligott, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1Not coming anywhere outside of American soon.
- drcreek, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1True, iTunes is good at music but the video sorting is kind of sucky. I think when Delcious Libbery 2 comes out it may be the dream combo app. iTunes + DL2 = Sex in media form.
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -1/+2iTunes, which is owned by Apple, have a partnership with the Zune, which is owned by Microsoft? Are you possessed? No way in hell it would ever happen, although it would be pretty sweet.
- platypibri, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1so go watch a movie already. bye.
- simplistics06, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1u must live a sad life
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1I think movie rentals would be a bad idea on the mobile platform. In fact, any video longer than three minutes in length probably shouldn't be purchased when you're using a mobile. I mean, there's the crappy wifi, which'll mean slow download speeds, so you'll probably have to leave the hot spot before it's downloaded completely, and finish it up when you get home, or maybe have to repurchase it entirely, if the system decides to be buggy.
- neferiousrich, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1did anyone else notice that this is published by valleywag, the bastion of truth?
- mdunn79, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1Then check out the VUDU box. It does exactly what you describe, in DVD quality for SD content and adding HD content every week -- and not just movies, but entire television series as well.
- Chewie67, on 12/27/2007, -0/+1That's my fear too. Unless Steve can somehow impose his will on the Studios, I doubt the price will be $2.99. $5.99 sounds about what they would come up with.
There are still two big questions, however:
1. What quality? Let's hope it's better than what is in iTunes now.
2. How long? Will rented movies start playing in seconds, like Movie Trailers do in Front Row? Or will it be "Wait 1 hour for the download". That would kill it. - zhulien, on 12/28/2007, -0/+1yes, but will I still have to download some crappy program just to browse their store?
