- jordn, on 11/22/2008, -9/+157Nice work Apple- you ban Podcastr from the App Store claiming it duplicated functionality, only for you then to add the feature to your device nearly 2 months after the fact.
Now you allow an Email client? I'm all for more choice for consumers, but this is just plain hipocritical.
Oh, and iTunes on Vista sucks ass, please get it sorted! - phoomp, on 11/22/2008, -3/+74iTunes on Vista sucks on purpose. That way Apple can say "see how great iTunes runs on MacOSX compared to Vista? Vista obviously sucks (please ignore how well Photoshop runs on Vista)".
- garbs, on 11/22/2008, -6/+63I still find it funny that a company that prides themselves on making a good user interface still does not have landscape support for the entire OS (or at the very least Mail and SMS).
- nickoberg, on 11/22/2008, -7/+40"uhh, teacher.. you forgot to give us homework"
- teh_techie, on 11/22/2008, -0/+30I wanna read my email in landscape god damn it!
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+29That's why it looks awful and still you see people using that program and defending it as if it is the best media player on windows. I'm gonna get dugg down for this (for all the ALL M$ DO IS BAD LOLZ!!111!) but the last few Windows media player versions have been very good.
I use rhythmbox myself on ubuntu because I like my apps to be light but I got stuck on Vista for a month and the media player was did just fine. - jakem1, on 11/22/2008, -1/+26Why bother buying a whole computer running Apple software when they can't even manage to write a media player. It's not just iTunes either. Quicktime turned me off Apple software about a decade ago - it's the original Windows virus.
- thecosmicpope, on 11/22/2008, -6/+31How legal is it to block out the competition? If Microsoft did it with IE and Outlook, there would be an uproar. The iPhone is running a stripped down OSX, and is pretty close to becoming a mini-computer rather than a phone. I'm surprised nobody has raised legal issues with it before.
Now that Apple has approved an email application, I'd love to see mobile Opera/Firefox. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -3/+27There are so many things wrong with the Apple ToS in the App Store, I don't know why you're willing to encourage this kind of behavior from a company. If Microsoft or any other company did that they would have a PR mess of apocalyptic measures in their hands.
- hardeep1singh, on 11/22/2008, -1/+23He's asking apple to fix the ***** Itunes app as it still stuck on XP like a changeophobic and fails to work on Vista.
- jordn, on 11/22/2008, -4/+24Personally I have always thought the same way, but i didn't want to put on my tinfoil hat about it. It's so rediculous, Microsoft doesn't write ***** apps for Apple, so why do they do it to Microsoft? That and those stupid ass Mac vs PC adverts.
A Mac is a PC Damnit! - phoomp, on 11/22/2008, -10/+29They don't pride themselves on good user interface ... they pride themselves on good *looking* user interface.
- zionKing, on 11/22/2008, -10/+27critical critical hippo
- CrudOMatic, on 11/22/2008, -0/+14Simple explaination:
Apple = HYPOCRITES.
Any informed PC user has known this for years... how much do you want to bet that there is some kickback for Apple here.
Steve Jobs is a hypocrite. - HolyChimp, on 11/22/2008, -0/+13If I could sync my iPhone with WMP then I would replace iTunes in a heartbeat. It runs better, has better integration with other parts of Vista (Media Center and such) and would allow me to stream my iTunes Library to my 360 (Why don't they have a wndows version of Connect360, one of the few apps I miss from my MacBook)
- nebkiwi, on 11/22/2008, -6/+19The problem with iTunes on windows is that Apple tries to make it all "Mac'ey"... in my opinion anyway...
- jordn, on 11/22/2008, -5/+18Great, now here come the Apple bury brigade to try and hush this all up while simutaneously making sure they are facing Cupertino, before performing a sacred dance to Lord Jobs, in the hope that he will increase the CPU speed of the macbook by 50Mhz next year so they can justify an upgrade e.g, buy a new one
- jrm125, on 11/22/2008, -5/+18Except 90% of the world's work.
- RiverBelow, on 11/22/2008, -0/+12Safari looks terrible on Windows, its hardly even a usable browser. Certainly not over Firefox and hardly over an updated IE7.
That said, iTunes runs terribly on Windows Vista. I have a whole whack of iPods and I use iTunes for all my music, and its a shame the thing is such a piece of crap, because I loved it so much using it on my Macbook. - intellimouse, on 11/22/2008, -2/+13But Windows is Microsoft's platform and they're not allowed to do whatever they want with it. For instance, when they said Internet Explorer couldn't be replaced as the default browser, everyone went ***** and took them to court.
- roadtripper, on 11/22/2008, -1/+12Secutiry Note? (Did anyone else notice the typo in the screenshot? I wonder how legit it is.)
- HolyChimp, on 11/22/2008, -0/+10What about the GMail app that someone made that let you work with threaded conversations and such from Gmail? That got blocked for being too similar to Mail.app, even though Mail.app does none of these things.
- jakem1, on 11/22/2008, -0/+10That's the problem with all Apple's software for Windows. They push their ugly themes and window layout on Windows users so their software sticks out like a sore thumb. If they spent half as much time making sure their software worked as they do trying to make it look pretty it might be worth installing.
- Trilogy, on 11/22/2008, -0/+10I thought "Cancel or allow" was their nag on Windows...
- onux16, on 11/22/2008, -11/+20It's willing to violate it's own rules and include Podcastr, but it still won't break them for Flash?
Granted, Podcastr and Flash are on two completely different issues, but every now and then we all just need a good venting. - ohplease, on 11/22/2008, -3/+12
Why would anyone buy a smartphone that allows the vendor to dictate what apps you can run? Why not get a Symbian, Android or even WM6.1 phone?
And 320x480? Come on, what is this 2003? - KibibyteBrain, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9And its not just that the interface doesn't match. There is something funky about the libraries they use to use much of the same interface code and compile it over. Sometimes on Vista when iTunes is in the background, the colors go all weird on the UI until the window has focus. And there is just something _wrong_ about the way some UI rendering works like fonts on Windows.
- intellimouse, on 11/22/2008, -4/+12"MS writes the worst OSX software bar none. human interface guidelines be damned. OfficeMac is evil in every sense of the word."
You mean kinda like how Apple follows all of Microsoft's interface guidelines when it builds Windows software?
Also, Microsoft is a software company and Apple is a hardware company, so Apple has more motivation to write crappy Windows software. - intellimouse, on 11/22/2008, -2/+10"In reality, apps are vetted to ensure that they don't cause bad crashes"
The reason they want to control the apps is so they can protect their revenue stream you ***** moron. Do you really believe that crap that they fed you?
It's the same reason why Verizon locks down all of their phones and you can't remove menu items like "buy music from Verizon's ***** online store". - jordn, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7It's a fair point! I would also like to point out that the majority of iTunes users are running Vista/XP!
So stop raping us Apple! Microsoft didn't give you a slap-dash version of Office 2008, so why the hate with iTunes? - Banshie, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8Lol confuse users with duplicate functionality! there are two brans of milk! Kernel Panic!
- inkswamp, on 11/22/2008, -5/+12So humor me. Explain why you are willing to put so much blind faith in Android. I don't get it. Here's what I see.
It's an OS by a company with no track record in producing operating systems much less making decent software, for that matter.
It's got hardware by companies so lacking in creativity and inspiration that they continue to be upstaged and gained on by a company that had 0% market share a year-and-a-half ago--a company whose product they are now rushing to copy.
The G1 comes out to mixed reviews at best and yet the iPhone is here and making good on its promises now. So why are you so down on the iPhone and cheerleading the other? Is it just because it's not Apple? - Izacus, on 11/22/2008, -1/+8So, can we get a decent navigation app now? Like TomTom, Garmin software or some such? Ya know, the one that doesn't need 3G connection? Since being lost in most cases means being in an arrea with little or no network coverage.
- intellimouse, on 11/22/2008, -1/+7"Maybe they're still bitter of the crap Microsoft pulled over the previous 30 years."
What kinda crap? Like having a better business model and generally owning the entire market? - yuanzhoulu, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6it's more about boycotting apple so that they learn to make things more flexible for people. if you suck up to them telling you how to use your phone, the whole damn place will be forced to them like communists.
- CrudOMatic, on 11/23/2008, -3/+9"""At the end of the day, it's Apple's platform and they don't have a monopoly so they can do what they want. The law has nothing to do with this."""
Are you ***** RETARDED? Apple doesn't have a monopoly?
* OSX can't run on a non Apple machine
* There can only be ONE app store for the iPhone
* You have to send your pretty like Apple machine BACK TO THEM for repairs - effectivly saying ***** YOU to computer repair technicians
* THEY approve of what a valid iPhone app is, nevermind that it is stable, conforms to their standards and offers functionality over what THEY offer
and so on....
Saying that this ISN'T a monopoly is like saying everyone has the chance to get ahead in a socialist society. - gnoffa, on 11/23/2008, -1/+7Why haven't any of you mentioned Office for Mac, got damnit, THAT is the worst "piece of *****-software" written for any OS... And if any of you tell me to go get OpenOffice, please, that package is #2 on my list so don't get me started.
Ooh, and yes, Apple, please allow all apps that is not malware, I'm fully capable of choosing on my own. Yes that's correct, my taste may differ from yours. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -2/+8Hey, bingo! You can't install ***** on an iPhone that Apple hasn't blessed from on high and sold to you (Where are the COMPETING application storefronts, hmmm).
Well, you can HACK it to install things for a bit, until Apple turns your phone into a $300 doorstop in a few weeks, but no, Apple has enforced a service monopoly on iPhone users, and they're willing to support it and (even more ridiculously) fight to the wall to defend it.
Apple: We're safer letting you think it's the OTHER guy who's an oppressive monopolist. - inactive, on 11/22/2008, -2/+7Same here. Nokia all the way for me. I don't know who is digging you down, not because you own an iPhone you should put up to this kind of policy.
- kronix2, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6iTunes and QuickTime are garbage on Windows.
They look like crap, as well. - CrudOMatic, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5because this move PROVES that they are hypocrites
- valkyries, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5throws a book at ya,
- TheSpook, on 11/22/2008, -3/+8I know Apple stuff is "sexy", but why do you put up with Apple's *****? It's not worth the hassle for me.
- PilotHead, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4iPhone released on 2007, we get landscape email near the end of 2008....we should have copy and paste by 2011!
- Taiyoryu, on 11/22/2008, -4/+8Couldn't Apple just change the TOS to say: "We reserve the right to arbitrarily accept or refuse distribution of any software made for the iPhone." and be done with it? That way their behavior will match the TOS.
- AboveandBeyond, on 11/22/2008, -1/+5" up until this point we've been led to believe that this duplication of functionality is wrong."
lol, you telling me apple invented email now? - CrudOMatic, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4and I guess that all the basic tools of ANY computing platform - iPhone is included here - is enough for you.
you know what, with an outlook like that, I believe MS should sue Adobe over photoshop - cuz' after all Windows has PaintBrush...
It's all about taking choice away from your customers, even though their basic apps are lacking - god-forbid some make a better app... that's WRONG...
Apple = Communism - Archon810, on 11/22/2008, -15/+19This ***** policy is the main reason I don't have an iPhone and never will. Android, in a few years, will trump the competition, and until then I'll do just fine with a plain phone. Shame on you, Apple.
- tech42er, on 11/22/2008, -3/+7You make a great point, but using Opera Mini instead of Mobile Safari is ridiculous. Opera Mini is nowhere near the quality of Mobile Safari.
