engadget.com — "...when not only one, but multiple trusted sources get in touch to let us know Steve Jobs & Co. are supposedly finally about completed with the wireless / video iPod, we have to take note..."

- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -10/+60It must a day ending in Y - there's a wireless video iPod rumor.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36Wireless? Cue the iTV wireless TV integration. If it's wireless, you'll not only be able to control your iTV with the Video iPod, but you'll be able to select videos that are on your Video iPod within the on screen iTV user interface using the video iPod itself. Now THAT would be cool.
- BrianPower, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Wow that would Rock!! And you might be able to do the same thing on your computer with Front Row 2.0, for those who don't own an iTV.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -46/+9Um, I thought wireless was a stupid idea that ate up battery life and was nothing more than a gimmick?
Apple's copying it? That explains it. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20"Apple's copying it?" So the Zune is copying the Gremlin is it? Apple wasn't ready to add features that would take away from the product, i.e. battery life, but they may have ovecome those. The Zunes battery life is said to not be great, and it's chunkyness alone was enough to lose my interest completely straight away.
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30"Um, I thought wireless was a stupid idea that ate up battery life and was nothing more than a gimmick?"
No flag, Microsoft's LAME IMPLEMENTATION of wireless is a stupid idea that's nothing more than a gimmick. Beaming songs back and forth with imaginary other Zune owners but nothing more? Yeah, that's a winner.
Somebody get flag564 a tissue to wipe away his tears - he'll need it when the true video iPod is finally unveiled. - arwcheek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9it's interesting that the wireless ipod and iTV pairing has come up. When I saw the iTV introduced i thought, "where's the built in ipod dock?" but if it's all wireless, who needs it?
by the way, where's the bury story option called "yet another rumor"? - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9If there is a product in the wings even 75% as cool as that rumor it will make the Zune look like ass.
- SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21Is flag564 Steve Balmer in disguise??
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -28/+5
No flag, Microsoft's LAME IMPLEMENTATION of wireless is a stupid idea blah blah blah...."
like I said Quixie McTroll. It was a "lame gimmick" when someone else did it. Now that a new RUMOR of the IMAGINARY video ipod comes up with (surprise!!!) the same feature copied from the Zune, then it becomes a good idea.
"he'll need it when the true video iPod is finally unveiled."
Like in Jan 06, April 1st-06, July 06, August and Septemper 06, and I guess the new date is late October of 06?
The fact that you people keep making up dates for the release of a player that does not exist shows that many of you need to seek some help instead of moding down people and pretending that this thing is a real device, ready for sale. - 23r17i05o42n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I hope it comes in BROWN!
- Quix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7"Is flag564 Steve Balmer in disguise??"
Naw, Ballmer is better looking. And less sweaty.
Though both tend to mutter incoherently about competitors' products... - MakinBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13flag564: "...like I said Quixie McTroll."
Mr. Pot, I'd like to introduce you to Mr. Kettle... - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@flag564:
I agree with your statement about the upcoming iPod video being nothing but rumor and how the rumors so far have been off.
But accusing Apple of "copying the same feature from the Zune", is doing EXACTLY what you are harping on others for, making speculation about something you know nothing about. You might have something if the 7G iPod comes without wireless -- then if they add it to the 8G, you could say that. But a few week difference between the release of two different players does not copying make.
If Apple has a wifi/bt feature coming in the 7G iPod, it's something that they would have been planning on and working on for quite a while now. One does not just slip in wireless functionality on merely a whim especially if they have to keep it in a similar formfactor and power level usage of the existing Video iPod.
And besides, Apple has always been the pioneer in regards to wireless device support for it's products. Wireless takes power supply and physical space for the hardware. Fitting in that hardware requires an entire redesign of the internals. A redesign of the internals means that a new fab facility must be created, but they can't create that fab unil they have the design for the product. And software must be written to control the power consumation and usage of the wireless hardware and an interface developed to give the user the ability to use that feature. And for the iPod to be near release, the fab must have been built, product developed and tested, corrected and tested again and again.
But you just ignore all that and think that since Zune just released and the new Video iPod hasn't, that Apple is clearly copying from Zune. - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"
The fact that you people keep making up dates for the release of a player that does not exist shows that many of you need to seek some help instead of moding down people and pretending that this thing is a real device, ready for sale."
And after the crap you read from these fanboys, you have to see what I'm saying is DEAD ON ACCURATE. - xxrazor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@sydigg:
no its really bill gates in disguise - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Again, here you have people who has taken a rumor of an imaginary device published by a blog that is well known for posting these fairy tales, and have all but proclaimed it to be real!
They have even made up a date for release. They dont seem to remember all the other release dates that have come and gone over the past year. They just made up new ones, not because they think it's true, but because it keeps the fairy tale alive.
What is disturbing is that people who point out that their has never been any evidence that this thing is real are modded down and mocked as being the crazy ones! this is one of the hallmarks of Apple Fanboys. Do they wonder why people call them a cult?
- FIRTEEN888, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4Even if they do announce this thing, I bet it wont look anything like all the awesome mockups we've seen
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18probably better, because it wont have evidence of crapy photoshoping. ;)
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23People, how many times do we have to see this?
They'll change the iPod eventually, but these rumors are just getting ***** annoying
I think that Digg should include a "Rumor/Speculation/Hype" selection when we're digging down stories. Then again, that would probably apply to 75% of the stories on Digg- Jimmathy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Is that not digg already?
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"I think that Digg should include a "Rumor/Speculation/Hype" selection "
I call that section "Digg"
- IanBell330, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Buried... I could use some iPod truth for a change.
- duodave, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Total yawners. I mean, come on, how hard would it be to add bluetooth to the thing? Hell, I could probably devise a blue-tooth add-on that would attach externally to an existing iPod. This is supposed to be innovation?
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20When has this been marked an inaccurate?
I've got more respect for engadget then digg users.- ryanblock, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Thanks! :)
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1now make good on the photos. ;)
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1looks like ryanblock is looking to up his page views with yet another made up Apple story.
Which part of your arse did you pull this one out of? - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You can't logically mark a rumor as innacurate, because that implies that someone KNOWS the rumor to be false.
Rumors are by definition "unconfirmed". - escheppa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why are people marking this as inaccurate if your read the article it is simply an educated guess nothing more. I understand you don't like rumors, yet you click on an article in digg which has a question mark after it, therefore its not a statement of fact but rather a question. And Flag564 what do you have against apple? Seriously do you like being modded down, does that get you off is some perverse way?
- theprez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Yeah, why is this being marked inacurate? Don't you know you can say ANYTHING if you just ask? (Put a question mark at the end.)
Here's the vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki2GWdOIYxw - easy4lif, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2thinksecret, appleinsider, & macrumors have a better track record and I'll believe them sooner then engadget
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2oh yea because you won't find any rumors on THOSE sites...oh wait...
- mikelikespie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The interesting application for wireless would be keeping an ipod in your pocket and having it automatically connecting to your car or whatnot. Probably by blue-tooth.
I my 5th gen iPods for listening to music, not watching 20 minutes of proprietary video format before the battery dies.
Maybe if video was more easily available (i.e. easily encoding my DVD I _own_ into a format my iPod can read), and a much longer battery life.- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1"The interesting application for wireless would be keeping an ipod in your pocket and having it automatically connecting to your car or whatnot. Probably by blue-tooth."
UM, WASTE OF BATTERY LIFE!!!!
DO YOU PEOPLE NOT REMEMBER SAYING THIS ABOUT THE ZUNE ABOUT A MILLION TIMES!
Now you cant wait for it to be added to the ipod, even if it's one that does not exist!
the double standards from you people is just amazing! - Nathan07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Check out Handbrake. Works great for converting to iPod.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1"The interesting application for wireless would be keeping an ipod in your pocket and having it automatically connecting to your car or whatnot. Probably by blue-tooth."
- justhim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't really care anymore.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, I just bought a new iPod, so I expect an upgrade to be announced exactly one day after my 14-day return/exchange period has expired.
- Coletrickle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, they did it last year, first release a nano, wich everybody bought, and just a month later release the 5g, so everybody thought; Doh, i should've waited :+
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I stand by what I said in the Engadget comments. I don't think it's even an iPod at all. I predict that it will basically be a wireless slingbox like device that can interface with a Mac's/PC's/iTV's and have iPod connectivity for mass storage content on the go. I'm also predicting if it has any iPod connectivity it will have sharing capabilities much like iTunes has over a wireless network. If anything I think it will be a dumb terminal UMPC that shares the iPod's capabilities and works like a slingbox with notebook/iTunes like sharing capabilities.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iTV seems to me to be a device that is mainly for bridging the gap between the PC and the TV by bringing PC content to the TV. I think it would be redundant of Apple to try and bridge the gap by trying to go the other way (TV content to the PC). I mean that's what the ITMS is for right? No need to reinvent the wheel with the type of device you are talking about.
- Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Vypergts, I think you missed my point. Yes it is true that iTV bridges the gap between the PC to the TV. However the device I think the Engadget article is speculating on would bridge your content from your PC/Mac/iTV to wherever you are at in the world much like how Slingbox and Orb allows you to get at your media. Sony also does this with the PSP using Locationfree. However what would make this different unlike the PSP is that this device could possibly interface with the existing video iPod for content when wireless hotspots are not available. Basically I think it's a slingbox add on with a bigger screen for the video iPod, not a replacement. However this might go a few steps further like web surfing, and sharing content with other devices.
- fenixx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think we are all digging at of hope for the product, rather than accountability of the resource.
Though I do trust Engadget. - pevensen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They JUST released new iPods. The better not release new ones already, or a lot of people will be pissed. I could see in maybe 6 months.
- venom25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This would probably be a whole different price segment so as not to compete with 5.5s. If there is any truth to this I would expect a $499 to $599 price. Then you would not piss off most of the people that bought 5.5s because they would not have bought the new one even if it was availiable right now. There would still be some moaning and complaining but not as much if it came out at the Ipod's current price point.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Summary: Apple about to announce a product sometime in the future.
Gee where have I heard this before? GET A FREAKIN LIFE. Buried. - lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of all, let me say none of this is probably true, but do not discount the advantages of built in wireless for the iPod.
While you are in range of some one else's WiPod, you could share your library with them. If you are at some one's house, you could play the music from their library. You could also have the option to save identifying information from a track so you can buy it later on the iTS.
Your WiPod could store RSS feeds and the weather forecast and keep it updated whenever it hits an open wireless network.
I think it is only a matter of time before the iPod goes wireless. The thing that interests me is whether they will go blue tooth or wifi. Each has their own advantage, but with blue tooth in pretty much every mac sold (I haven't checked, but I think it is all of them) they will probably go with blue tooth. - zeejay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They tried a high price point with the 60gb iPod photo, and I don't think it did too well at all, considering how long it lasted up there.
Wi-fi is cool *if* I can shop the iTunes store using it, can sync using it, and/or could use it as a remote desktop thingie in some cool way. I couldn't care less about swapping corporate pre-approved singles for limited playback. - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know.. if they DID do this and I just bought an iPod last month or wheneverte last one was released, I would be pissed.
I would join the ipod ranks if they went wide screen. then i would never want to hear about the 'next big thing' again. - COYOT3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dude I really am not caring about widescreen iPods; just makes it sounds like it'll be easier to break when I stick in my pocket with my keys, change, pocketkinfe, etc.
A wireless headphone iPod would be worth a lot to me though.. Not many things as startling as having your headphone cord catch in the bike's handlebars as you shoot through traffic at 20+ mph.. =(- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would think shooting through traffic on your bike while blocking out your ability to hear the outside world would be startling in and of itself.
- stasis88, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0ANOTHER BULL ***** FAKE RUMOR ABOUT APPLE. IF APPLE DOES DO THIS THEY WILL JUST BE COPYING MICROSOFT ON THAT ONE...
- EndrWiggin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Really? Where's Microsoft's touchscreen widescreen media player? It might be worth a look.
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"ANOTHER BULL ***** FAKE RUMOR ABOUT APPLE. IF APPLE DOES DO THIS THEY WILL JUST BE COPYING MICROSOFT ON THAT ONE..."
But remember, when Apple copies it's for "the good of us all". Even when the product isnt even real.
Notice how Apple ripping off the Zune's so-called "gimmick" features is excused and those gimmicks are not seen as desired features?
These fankids are just two-faced liars.
- PradaPete, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0good move for those people who got their 80 gig ipodz LIKE 2 FRIGGIN WEEKS AGO..
THERE WILL BE 1 RAMPAGE IF THIS HAPPENZ - mattash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some have mentioned this already, but given that engadget is the only media source reporting this, is it safe enough to say that this would be a bad time to consider purchasing an 80gb iPod? Because I was... until now.
- rogermugs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks an aweful lot like a Palm LifeDrive with an "artists' conception" if you will....
- crlake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0True or false, I KNEW Jobs would find a way to under mind the launch of the ZUNE. People weren’t really that blown way by the Zune to begin with. Now this? With even the tiniest rumor about a BIGGER, BADDER, IPOD and iPhone – coming out in a month, people will just hold on to their money to see how things play out.
