You can delete the "Made on a Mac" thingies at the bottom. - skoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Dear Apple, is there a reason my iWeb index page is named: "E39154F9-81C5-4AB9-B516-DBF23A990993.html" ?
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23miles,
iWeb (obviously) isn't made for web pros who can hand code everything. What would be the point? It's for those of us (ok lazy or don't have the time) that don't want to learn html and css and so on. Also, you don't have to use their templates. Make it on a blank page and just move it and add it.
I doubt the next version will be iWeb Pro. Some new or better working features in the next revision (#1, NOT having to use .mac) will do nicely - actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@ macparrot
Congrats on having the techinical skills to defeat the iWeb templates meant to ensure attractive pages. - AppleLuva, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I use iWeb to build and manage my youth soccer clubs website and I love it! THere are obviously drawbacks including lack of table support, inability to easily edit a pages code or it's CSS, etc. But the WYSIWYG presentation method and on the fly design makes it a winner. If they can add on to this product with more features and standards then I'm in.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You fell asleep on your keyboard while typing "Welcome"?
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Err, right now, iWeb can be used with any Web server, you just 'Export' to a folder and then FTP the folder. It's quite a nifty tool, but very very limited, currently. I would hope that this rumoured Pro version just turns out to be a more fully-featured version of the main product.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Think of iWeb as like a PowerPoint (or Keynote) creator for webpages. Whatever you want to add just works. Built-in RSS support, blogging and podcast support, easy to use and manage comments, iLife integration, and other features makes this the easiest webpage creator.
Before this comes off as another Apple fanboy rant, let me add that this comes with a price. iWeb being part of iLife means that there is no additional cost beyond this suite to use it. HOWEVER, if you want to actually USE all the advanced features I mentioned, you must have a Mac (naturally) AND a .mac account which starts at $99 a year. Suddenly it's not so inexpensive. Now add in that the urls created for iWeb in .mac run about 6 miles long, how do you get people to visit your page? Unless you send them the url, they aren't going to remember http://web.mac.com/gserle1/iWeb/MacParrot/Welcome.html..for example.
Now another "feature" I take exception to is that some of the other advanced features requires QuickTime to use. As an Apple user, I of course have it (QT Pro as well), but many Windows and Linux users do not and is it really fair to force them to download yet another program just to view your content?
Also, the pages created using iWeb tend to be VERY big as compared to other sites showing similar content.
If this story is true, I would like to see Apple do a few things different. Allow users to inject web-friendly media besides that which is QuickTime compatible. Allow users to post iWeb files with either another host or create a way to have an easy to remember url within .mac. I'd also like some choices in the way the navigation menu is generated. - node3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@macparrot
You don't have to use .Mac with iWeb. You can publish your site anywhere you wish via ftp. - sonofalink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Coda?
- zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's called 'no way in hell can Apple top Adobe software'.
Umm.. they already have. Look at Final Cut Studio. It ***** on Premiere - miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5macparrot- but if they are making "iWeb Pro", who is it aimed at? If it doesn't, then the entry level consumer won't know how to make their own because it's too difficult. That's why I made my comment above- it wasn't a general stab at iWeb (although the program is already slow and unwieldy, that's a different story). iWeb Pro = Dreamweaver.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6"THere are obviously drawbacks including lack of table support"
This is a drawback??.. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4crap. Digg added some extra characters at the end. take out the "..for" and it works
- WiBu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@kevin45
There's nothing wrong with tables when used correctly. The problem was people were using them for laying out everything. - Codee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The funny thing is Apple is capable of putting out ANY kinda of app they want. Period.
Pro Apps like, Final Cut, Motion, Shake, Logic Pro and Aperture say more than enough.
So why is it so far fetched for anyone to believe they can make a pro web authoring app?
They have a new market and a new product in mind. I expect them to hit that mark. As usual. - yesno, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that would be awesome
- chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It weaves your dreams!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Lets hope they set the standard in operating system applications that belong with the base package.
- kdbarto, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I publish my web site to my own web server, using iWeb to build the site and apache to serve it. In fact I do it for 2 sites.
- redrabbit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Right now, iWeb can easily publish sites to non .mac accounts through third-party plugins.
- stalefries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@macparrot: the mirror effect makes you look sort of creepy.
- dvgraphics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dragon
Unless you count VLC, DiVX, the old WMP9, RealPlayer or a handful of other apps and Quicktime Plugins. - jballer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uuid ftw - yay for simplicity
oh, and i think iWeb Pro is actually called "WebObjects"... - warnergt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I use iWeb to build and manage my youth soccer clubs website and I love it!"
Ditto.
http://www.lititzsummershowcase.org/ - nfxmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is from an anonymous source. Page 2 rumors rarely pan out. Regardless, if it does happen, I would be excited to see Apple's approach to pro web development.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actorboy,
My skillz are legendary! I just didn't want to have another iWeb page that looked like every other. I'm actually writing an article on easy to use Mac web site makers and that was the first. Note it hasn't been upgraded in awhile. I making the same site (as close as possible) with other software. Next up is Fishbeam's Goldfish, Sandvox, and Freeway Express. - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1also adobe premier (which I used to be an avid user of before Final Cut) uses a lot of Quicktime plug-ins
- meepzork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i like iweb and i look forward to ANY update, pro or otherwise.
- ultrahombre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I would like a Windows Version.
- claughery, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good. iweb was cool until I started to see a ton of sites that looked exactly like mine.
note to apple - i will buy it as soon as the store is back online (on whatever future tuesday at 9am pacific). - shanmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iWeb Pro? I think it will probably be a stretch to call it that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's what I was getting at.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comparing to iWeb to Dreamweaver makes no sense, but iWeb Pro might be a decent challenger. Since Adobe merged with Macromedia, there's room for some competition in this end of the market. I look forward to trying out a possible alternative, even if it doesn't measure up right away.
- OdinEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Adobe make Premier with home grown team, Apple bought a company to make Final Cut."
And?
If the end product is good and useful, am I supposed to care terribly whether Apple did it with a "home grown team" or if they did it by buying someone else's home grown team? - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its probably a way to earn coin it outside of the iLife suite. Although seeing what these guys have just brought out with Final Cut, when they set their sites on a pro app they definitely deliver. I use iWeb for my basic publishing needs and it's great, so a pro version would be cool.
- chewy5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It really needs a better name. Imagine if they'd callled final cut iMovie Pro. My ears would burn!
- serpicolugnut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't doubt this too much, because 1) Professional web authoring has been a hole in Apple's product offeringsfor sometime now, 2) Web publishing (along with traditional desktop publishing) is an important market for Apple, and 3) Much of the heavy lifting for an app of this type has already been done with Dashcode.
However, if Apple is truly trying to make a pro web authoring app, it has to quickly realize that pros won't be looking for any .Mac integration. Unless Apple is going to revamp .Mac and add some pro level features (server side lanauges like PHP, MySQL and Ruby, statistics, user level access, etc), Pros have no use for .Mac. - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3bye bye dreamweaver...
- gnomex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The long URL is created when you use characters like öåü-/%&... or put spaces between words on the page title. If you use a simple word like "Welcome" or "Services", the URL will stay short.
- dragon76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Uh, I dunno about you, but if a piece of media won't play in QuickTime, as a Mac user you are screwed. Even WIndows Media on the Mac comes as a QuickTime plugin.
- arapro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1iWeb rocks dude, cant wait to see the pro version so I can upload stuff with youtube content ! without using iwebmore or something like that
- caliform, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3So this is basically just something someone just pulled out of their ass. I'm sorry, but we all know that iLife will get upgrades. Do we know anything? No. Did you make a mock-up of said 'iWeb pro'? No. Does this article offer anything but three lines saying it's just baseless speculation? Yes. Buried.
- tyrione, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iWeb Pro would not remotely be analogous to WebObjects. Anyone who believes this crap hasn't developed Enterprise 4-tier systems.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is like Geocities on your desktop.
At least use Dreamweaver if you're not going code by hand. Sheesh. - stockjones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I still want my irack.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGHty_S0TU0 - BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They do, its the most powerful programe in the world, its called... Note Pad. But seriously just use Dream Weaver.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OK, lots of people have made the point that you can export to a folder and then upload it. But does that also keep the RSS support for blogs and podcasts and the comments?
- christ0fer, on 06/21/2008, -0/+0iweb is myweb
- llemirtrauts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Do we really need more web authoring software?
